2026 World Cup: Nigeria’s Case Against DR Congo Watertight, Says NSC Chairman

Nigeria’s petition to FIFA challenging the eligibility of several Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) players in the 2026 World Cup playoffs has been described as “very tight” by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko.

He emphasized that the case is grounded in law, not sentiment.

The Super Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo on penalties in Morocco last month, handing the Leopards a place in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for Mexico in March 2026.

Nigeria has since filed a formal complaint with FIFA, alleging that nine Congolese players were ineligible under DRC’s domestic law, which does not permit dual citizenship.

“Our case is solid. We’re not sore losers; this is about enforcing the law,” Dikko told Arise TV.

“There are suspicions that some procedures were not correctly followed in accordance with the laws of the game. Some players may have misrepresented their status to FIFA to obtain clearance.”

“Just two days ago, FIFA ruled against Malaysia for the same issue, overturning matches where players had procured passports illegally.”

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) maintains that players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Axel Tuanzebe, who featured in the playoff, should not have been cleared to represent DRC.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi explained, “The petition concerns nine DRC players. FIFA was misled into clearing these players because it is not responsible for enforcing domestic citizenship laws.

“Congolese law prohibits dual nationality, yet some players reportedly hold European or French passports. The process was therefore fraudulent.”

In response, DR Congo dismissed Nigeria’s petition, accusing the Super Eagles of trying to qualify “from the back door.”

In a statement on its official Instagram page, the Congolese team said: “If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door. The World Cup must be played with dignity, not with lawyers’ tricks. Bad losers.”

The dispute has reignited debate among Nigerian supporters, many hopeful that FIFA’s review could alter the playoff outcome.

Nigeria last appeared at the World Cup in 2018 and missed the 2022 edition in Qatar, raising fears that another absence in 2026 would deepen disappointment.

FIFA statutes allow a player to change national association only once, subject to approval by its Players’ Status Committee.

While FIFA requires a player to hold a passport from the new nation, Congolese law prohibits dual nationality, creating potential legal conflict.

Past cases indicate FIFA could overturn results, deduct points, or impose fines when ineligible players are fielded.

The matter now rests with FIFA, which will determine whether DR Congo violated eligibility rules.

Should Nigeria’s petition succeed, the Super Eagles could be reinstated into contention for the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico, provided fixtures have not yet been played.

“This is not about emotions. It is about the law. If rules have been broken, justice must be served,” Dikko concluded.

Angry Constituents Attack Lawmaker Over Alleged Neglect, Poor Representation

Residents of Dansadau town in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Wednesday reportedly attacked a member of the State House of Assembly over allegations of poor representation and neglect.

The lawmaker, Kabiru Mikailu, who represents Maru South Constituency, was said to have been assaulted by angry youths when he accompanied Governor Dauda Lawal on a visit to the community.

Residents accused the legislator of abandoning the constituency since his election, alleging that he rarely visited the area or engaged with constituents on matters affecting their lives and security.

Some community members claimed that Mikailu neither attended Sallah celebrations in Dansadau nor visited families who lost relatives to repeated bandit attacks, a development they described as deeply disappointing.

Security operatives were reportedly deployed to the scene and succeeded in restoring calm, preventing the situation from escalating further.

Governor Lawal was in Dansadau to flag off the reconstruction of the over 90-kilometre Dansadau–Gusau road.

He also ordered the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the town’s General Hospital and approved the provision of solar-powered electricity to improve living conditions in the area.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring security, rebuilding critical infrastructure, and improving the welfare of communities affected by insecurity across Zamfara State.

During the visit, Governor Lawal was also conferred with the chieftaincy title of Garkuwan Dansadau and turbaned by the Emir of Dansadau, Alhaji Garba Muhammad.

Chelsea Stage Dramatic Fightback To Rescue 2-2 Draw Against Newcastle

Chelsea staged a dramatic fightback to rescue a 2-2 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday, after falling two goals behind in the first half.

Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade put the home side in control with a quick double in the opening 20 minutes.

Chelsea’s defence struggled to cope, allowing Woltemade to slot home twice, first following a mishandled cross from Jacob Murphy, and then from Anthony Gordon’s pinpoint delivery.

After the break, Chelsea turned the game around thanks to Reece James’s stunning free-kick in the 49th minute and Joao Pedro’s brilliant solo effort in the 66th, which saw him convert a long clearance past Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The draw keeps Chelsea in fourth place in the Premier League, but questions linger over head coach Enzo Maresca’s future after a turbulent week that saw speculation linking him to Manchester City.

Maresca denied the reports, calling them “100 percent speculation,” and insisted he remains focused on Chelsea.

Chelsea’s slow start was attributed to defensive lapses and poor organisation, issues that Maresca had hinted at after last weekend’s win over Everton.

Newcastle, despite injuries to key defenders like Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, and Tino Livramento, threatened to extend their lead but were controversially denied a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah barged into Gordon.

Maresca, visibly relieved after the equaliser, celebrated with a jubilant jig on the touchline as his side secured a hard-fought point.

The comeback underlined Chelsea’s resilience but also highlighted ongoing concerns over squad rotation and defensive cohesion this season.

Nigerian Man Convicted Of $7.5 Million Charity Fraud In US

A 32-year-old Nigerian, Olusegun Adejorin, has been convicted in the United States for defrauding two charitable organizations of over $7.5 million and faces up to 20 years in prison, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed.

According to a DOJ press release cited by DAILY GAZETTE on Saturday, Adejorin was extradited from Ghana and found guilty of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and unauthorized access to a protected computer following a six-day trial in Maryland federal court.

The DOJ stated that between June and August 2020, Adejorin targeted a charity in Maryland and another in New York, using sophisticated tactics to divert funds.

He allegedly accessed employee email accounts, impersonated staff, and manipulated financial transactions to misappropriate money.

“A federal jury convicted Olusegun Samson Adejorin, 32, a Nigerian national, of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information,” the DOJ statement said.

The defendant reportedly registered spoofed domain names to impersonate employees of one charity while requesting withdrawals from the other.

He also intercepted and manipulated emails to falsely authorize the transfers, ultimately diverting more than $7.5 million to accounts not linked to the charities.

U.S Attorney Kelly O. Hayes, alongside FBI Baltimore Field Office Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul, praised the investigative work of the FBI and acknowledged Assistant U.S Attorneys Joshua Rosenthal and Darren S. Gardner, who prosecuted the case.

Adejorin faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison for each of the five counts of wire fraud, five years for unauthorized access to a protected computer, and a mandatory two years, to run consecutively, for aggravated identity theft. U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang has scheduled sentencing for Friday, April 10, 2026.

The DOJ noted that federal sentences often fall below the maximum penalties, as judges consider U.S Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case forms part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide DOJ initiative targeting organized crime, immigration violations, and violent criminal activity.

Iran Executes Man Convicted Of Spying For Israel

Iran has executed Aghil Keshavarz, a man convicted of spying for Israel, in what authorities described as the latest death sentence linked to espionage following last June’s brief but intense conflict between the two nations.

The judiciary’s press agency, Mizan, announced on Saturday that Keshavarz’s death sentence was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court and following legal procedures.

According to Mizan, he was found guilty of collaborating with Israel’s Mossad, photographing military and security sites, and conducting operations on their behalf.

Keshavarz was arrested between April and May in Urmia, a city in northwestern Iran, and authorities said he admitted to his role during interrogations.

The judiciary detailed that his assignments included photographing sensitive locations, planting tracking devices, conducting opinion polls, and analyzing traffic patterns, all under Mossad direction.

The execution follows a 12-day war that began on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military and nuclear facilities.

The conflict later escalated when the United States joined Israel in targeting Iranian nuclear sites, before a ceasefire was reached on June 24.

This marked the first open confrontation between the two countries after years of covert operations and sporadic clashes.

Since the ceasefire, Iranian authorities have promised swift trials for individuals accused of collaborating with Israel.

Officials have confirmed multiple arrests and executions of people convicted of working for Mossad.

Iran, which does not recognize Israel, has long accused the country of sabotage, including attacks on its nuclear program and assassinations of Iranian scientists.

In October 2025, Tehran revised its espionage laws, imposing stricter punishments on individuals accused of spying for Israel or the United States, including asset confiscation and the death penalty, measures that were not automatically applied under previous legislation.

Nothing Positive From Fuel Subsidy Removal, Says Former Sports Minister Dalung

Former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has criticized the removal of the fuel subsidy, asserting that the policy has failed to deliver relief to Nigerians and has instead worsened poverty, hunger, inflation, and insecurity.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Dalung said the subsidy removal, announced by President Bola Tinubu in May 2023 with the famous declaration that “subsidy is gone,” has not benefited ordinary citizens as promised.

“Granted the subsidy has been removed, but it was done in a way that showed the President did not fully understand the workings of government or the complexities of Nigeria,” Dalung said.

“There was no proper consultation. At that time, there was no functioning government, only the President and Vice President were in office. A decision of this magnitude required input from a cabinet, advisers, and policymakers, but that did not happen.”

“One person decided, and Nigerians were expected to accept it, hoping for good outcomes. Many years later, nothing positive has come of it, only poverty, hunger, inflation, and insecurity.”

Dalung further accused the Tinubu administration of failing to account for the billions of naira generated from subsidy removal, insisting that Nigerians should have seen a higher standard of living.

“Since the entire subsidy was withdrawn, citizens should be living better than people in Dubai, given the enormous revenues that flowed into government coffers,” he said.

He also raised concerns about government borrowing, claiming that since 2023, the Tinubu administration’s debt has already doubled the amount borrowed during President Muhammadu Buhari’s entire eight-year tenure.

Dalung’s remarks come amid growing public criticism over rising living costs and insecurity in the country, as citizens continue to feel the effects of the subsidy removal.

Woman Arrested For Selling Two-Month Old Baby For N1.5m

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a woman for allegedly selling her two-month-old baby for N1.5 million in the state.

The arrest was confirmed on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Bright Edafe, in a statement made available to journalists in Asaba.

Edafe said the suspect, identified as Ughale, had initially reported at the Ekpan Police Division on December 15 that her infant was snatched during a robbery attack while she was travelling in a commercial tricycle.

According to him, the Divisional Police Officer of Ekpan Division, CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilised operatives and launched a search-and-rescue operation following the report.

However, during the course of investigation, the police noticed contradictions in the woman’s account, coupled with suspicious behaviour, which led to further interrogation.

Edafe disclosed that the suspect later confessed to fabricating the robbery story and admitted that she had sold her baby to two individuals for N1.5 million.

He added that the suspects involved in the transaction were arrested, while the baby was successfully recovered and is currently safe.

“All suspects are presently in custody as investigations continue, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices connected to the crime for prosecution,” the police spokesperson stated.

Benin Detains Former Defence Minister Over Foiled Coup Attempt

The Republic of Benin has placed former defence minister and opposition figure Candide Azannai in pre-trial detention as part of the ongoing investigation into the country’s failed coup earlier this month.

Azannai, a prominent opposition politician, was arrested last week at his party headquarters in Cotonou following the attempted takeover.

Authorities have accused him of plotting against the state and incitement to rebellion, despite Azannai publicly condemning the coup attempt.

The detention follows the arrest of around 30 individuals, mostly soldiers, who were jailed on treason charges after the foiled coup.

On December 7, soldiers briefly announced on national television that they had ousted President Patrice Talon, but loyalist forces quickly regained control with support from the Nigerian air force.

Several people were killed during the uprising, while some mutineers, including alleged coup leader Lieutenant-Colonel Pascal Tigri, remain at large.

An AFP reporter witnessed Azannai being escorted from Benin’s anti-terrorism court at dawn after several hours of questioning before being taken into custody.

While President Talon has been credited with driving economic growth in Benin, critics accuse him of authoritarian tendencies in a country historically lauded for its democratic governance.

The nation has also faced jihadist attacks in the northern regions in recent years.

Talon is constitutionally required to hand over power in April 2026 after completing his two-term limit.
