Enugu Police Commissioner Visits Scene Of Umuchigbo-Nike Clashes, Orders Investigation Into Gruesome Murder Of Two Brothers

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the violent clashes that erupted in Umuchigbo-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, leading to the gruesome killing of two brothers and the destruction of several properties.

According to a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Friday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner visited the affected community to assess the level of damage and assured residents of the police’s commitment to restoring peace.

During the visit, CP Giwa expressed deep concern over what he described as “senseless and avoidable” violence that had claimed innocent lives and left a trail of destruction.

He directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to launch a thorough and discreet probe into the incident and ordered a sustained manhunt for fleeing suspects, promising that all perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“The Command will not tolerate any act of violence under any guise,” the Commissioner warned.

“Those responsible for these criminal acts will face the full weight of the law.”

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the crisis stemmed from a protracted leadership tussle that had divided the community for years.

The report further indicated that the killing of two brothers on October 29, 2025, allegedly by one faction, triggered retaliatory attacks the following day by the opposing group, leading to the burning of five residential buildings and the destruction of several vehicles.

So far, twenty-seven (27) suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are ongoing to track down others who are still at large.

CP Giwa called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and youth groups in Umuchigbo-Nike to embrace dialogue and work closely with security agencies to restore lasting peace.

He urged the warring factions to sheathe their swords and allow justice to take its course.

“We must work together to end this cycle of violence,” he said, assuring that normalcy has been restored to the community following the deployment of police operatives to maintain law and order.

The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and warned that those instigating violence or taking the law into their own hands would be dealt with decisively.

PDP Defies Court Order, Directs Members To Prepare For National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked its members nationwide to continue preparations for its upcoming national convention, despite a Federal High Court order restraining the party from holding the event.

In a statement on Friday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the court’s decision as “a direct assault on internal party democracy.”

He added that the party would immediately challenge the ruling at the Court of Appeal.

The PDP had scheduled its National Elective Convention to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, but growing internal disputes have continued to plague the opposition party.

Supporters of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, remain at odds with the leadership of the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, over control of party structures in several states, including Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Plateau.

The crisis culminated in a lawsuit filed by three aggrieved party officials — Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (South-South PDP Secretary) — who asked the court to halt the convention, alleging procedural violations.

Delivering judgment in the case FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ruled that the PDP failed to comply with both the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and its own internal rules before announcing the convention.

The judge held that the party did not conduct valid state congresses in at least 14 states, nor did it issue the mandatory 21-day notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as required by law.

Consequently, the court ordered the immediate suspension of the planned convention until the party rectifies the identified irregularities and complies with all legal provisions.

Reacting to the judgment, Ologunagba insisted that the decision does not invalidate the party’s preparations for its convention.

“The judgment amounts to an assault on Nigeria’s democratic process,” he said.

“However, it does not vitiate our ability to continue the necessary processes towards the National Convention to elect new national officers.”

He added that the PDP has directed its legal team to file an appeal, citing a recent Supreme Court ruling that reaffirmed the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

Ologunagba urged members and state chapters to remain calm and focused, assuring them that the party remains committed to the rule of law and the defense of multi-party democracy.

“The PDP, as the leading opposition party in Nigeria, remains steadfast in upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and internal democracy,” he stated.

BREAKING: Trump Officially Designates Nigeria As Country Of Concern Over Killings Of Christians

The United States has officially designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern following President Donald Trump’s statement expressing alarm over what he described as widespread persecution and killings of Christians in the West African nation.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Trump said that Christianity in Nigeria is facing “an existential threat,” accusing radical Islamist groups of orchestrating large-scale attacks against Christian communities.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘COUNTRY OF PARTICULAR CONCERN’ , but that is the least of it,” Trump wrote.

The U.S President added that the international community must not ignore the crisis, citing statistics that suggest thousands of Christians have been murdered in Nigeria compared to global figures.

“When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered as they are in Nigeria, 3,100 versus 4,476 worldwide, something must be done,” he said.

Trump said he had directed Congressman Riley Moore, along with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to “immediately look into this matter,” stressing that the United States would not remain silent in the face of such atrocities.

“We cannot stand by while these killings continue in Nigeria and elsewhere. We stand ready, willing, and able to protect our great Christian population around the world,” he declared.

Councilors Suspend LG Chairman Over Alleged Misconduct

The Legislative Council of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area in Ogun State has suspended the council chairman, Wasiu Lawal, over allegations of gross misconduct, financial impropriety, and insubordination.

The development was announced on Thursday by the Leader of the Legislative Council, Mutairu Gbadamosi, in a video that has since gone viral.

Gbadamosi said the motion for Lawal’s suspension was moved by the councillor representing Ota Ward 2, Hon. Musediq Asalu, who accused the chairman of repeatedly flouting the council’s directives and failing to present financial records as required by law.

“Over the past months, this Honourable Council has requested, on at least four occasions, the Income and Expenditure Account of the local government in line with Section 52 of Part V of the Ogun State Local Government Law 2000 (as amended),” Asalu said.

“Despite these repeated requests, the chairman has willfully refused to submit the documents, offering excuses or no response at all.”

Asalu alleged that the chairman’s actions amounted to negligence, insubordination, and a breach of the law, adding that the refusal to render account raised “serious suspicions of financial impropriety and abuse of office.”

He further claimed that Lawal had disregarded resolutions, invitations, and correspondence from councillors, showing “gross disrespect for the legislative arm” and violating the principle of separation of powers at the local government level.

Quoting provisions of the Ogun State Local Government Law, Asalu moved that Lawal be suspended for three months pending the outcome of an investigation into the council’s financial and administrative management.

“During this period, the chairman shall not access any local government accounts or official documents, issue instructions, or act in any official capacity,” the motion read.

The motion was seconded by the councillor representing Agbara Ward and reportedly passed unanimously, as no member supported a counter-motion.

The lawmakers also directed Lawal to return all government property in his possession, including vehicles, documents, and communication devices, to the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA).

The council’s vice chairman, Abosede Balogun, was immediately appointed acting chairman, tasked with performing all duties of the office in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, Gbadamosi urged Governor Dapo Abiodun and state authorities to provide security for the councillors, alleging that thugs loyal to the suspended chairman had attempted to attack members at the council secretariat in Ota.

When contacted by DAILY GAZETTE, Chairman Wasiu Lawal dismissed the suspension as fake.

“It’s just fake, completely fake,” he said in a phone interview. “There’s nothing like that. It’s all rumours.”

Lawal maintained his position even after being informed of the viral video showing his suspension, insisting, “It’s fake. That’s all I can say.”

Taraba Governor Announces Plans To Dump PDP For APC

The Special Adviser to the Taraba State Governor on Political Matters and Special Duties, Josiah Kente, has confirmed growing momentum behind calls for Governor Agbu Kefas to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move he described as strategic for the state’s development.

In a statement released in Jalingo on Tuesday, Kente said the governor’s potential defection to the ruling party at the national level would not be for personal or partisan gain, but to ensure Taraba’s “full participation in national growth and access to federal opportunities.”

“This call is not rooted in political ambition but in the collective desire of Tarabans for inclusive progress, infrastructural renewal, and national integration,” Kente stated.

He explained that Governor Kefas’s record in education, healthcare, and infrastructure had positioned the state for greater collaboration with the Federal Government.

Aligning with the APC, he said, would unlock new opportunities for federal projects, security partnerships, and international development interventions.

“With the Governor’s alignment with the ruling party, Taraba can expect an increased federal presence, in areas such as roads, bridges, hospitals, and power projects, which are often concentrated in states with stronger ties to the centre,” Kente added.

The adviser lauded Kefas’s leadership since assuming office, describing him as a visionary whose “Moving Forward” agenda could deliver even greater results through synergy with Abuja.

He called on political stakeholders, youth organisations, and community leaders across Taraba to support what he termed “a realignment for growth and prosperity.”

Governor Agbu Kefas, who was elected on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2023, has so far led a government focused on education reforms, healthcare expansion, and infrastructure renewal.

His possible defection to the APC would mark a historic political shift in Taraba, long regarded as a PDP stronghold since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

Several individuals and groups have in recent months urged the governor to switch allegiance to the APC to attract more federal attention and investment to the state.

Trump Orders Pentagon To Resume Nuclear Weapons Testing

Us President, Donald Trump, announced on Thursday that he has instructed the Pentagon to resume nuclear weapons testing to match the programs of China and Russia, just minutes before opening a critical summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The announcement followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declaration on Wednesday that Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, despite repeated warnings from Washington.

“Because of other countries’ testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis,” Trump said in a social media post referencing both Russia and China.

Trump, who claimed credit for a “complete update and renovation” of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, added that the United States still possesses more nuclear weapons than any other nation.

“Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years,” he wrote.

According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), nine nations currently possess nuclear arms: the United States, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea. ICAN estimates there are about 12,331 warheads worldwide, with Russia holding around 5,500 and the U.S. about 5,044.

Trump provided no specific details on when or where the new tests would take place but said the process would “begin immediately.”

Putin’s announcement of a successful Poseidon drone test marked Russia’s second nuclear-capable weapons test in less than a week.

Speaking at a military hospital treating wounded Russian soldiers, Putin said the Poseidon drone torpedo could travel faster than submarines, dive deeper, and reach “any continent in the world.”

Trump had earlier criticized Putin for prioritizing weapons testing amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, saying he should “end the war instead of testing missiles.”

A planned meeting between the two leaders in Budapest last week was canceled.

The United States last conducted a nuclear test in September 1992 at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site, producing a 20-kiloton underground explosion.

The following month, then-President George H.W. Bush imposed a moratorium on nuclear testing, a policy maintained by every administration since.

In the decades since, Washington has relied on computer simulations and subcritical experiments, non-nuclear tests designed to ensure the reliability of its arsenal without violating test bans.

Trump’s new directive marks the first official reversal of that policy in more than three decades, signaling a potential escalation in the global nuclear arms race.

The U.S president is currently in South Korea, where he is set to meet with Xi Jinping for their first in-person talks since the start of his second term.

The high-stakes summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension between Washington, Beijing, and Moscow.

Cross River Assembly Clears Lawmaker Of N1.6bn Allegation

The Cross River State House of Assembly has exonerated Hon. Cyril James Omini, member representing Yakurr I State Constituency, of allegations that he collected ₦1.6 billion from a construction firm executing state road projects.

The decision came after lawmakers adopted the report of the Special Committee on Public Complaints, chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Sylvester Agabi (Obudu), which investigated the petition.

Presenting the committee’s findings at plenary, Agabi said the panel invited key stakeholders, including the Managing Director of Eketeson Resources International Limited, Engr. Donald Ekete; the Commissioners for Works and Finance; the Special Adviser on Projects Monitoring and Evaluation; and the Accountant General of the state to testify.

He disclosed that Omini also appeared before the committee and “vehemently denied” ever receiving any payment from the company.

Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved that the allegations were unsubstantiated, describing them as “untrue, unfounded, and baseless.”

“Having not been found wanting, Hon. Cyril Omini is hereby absolved of any ₦1.6 billion financial involvement with Eketeson Resources International Limited as alleged,” the resolution read.

Lawmakers commended the committee for conducting what they described as a thorough and impartial investigation, adding that the outcome reaffirmed the Assembly’s dedication to transparency, justice, and due process.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, praised the committee’s professionalism, noting that the probe was not intended to witch-hunt anyone but to ensure fair hearing and accountability.

Reacting after the resolution, Hon. Omini expressed gratitude to the House leadership and his colleagues for giving him the opportunity to clear his name.

“I thank the Speaker and members of the committee. I am not angry with anyone. The report has cleared my name, and I remain focused on serving my people,” he said.

The Assembly had, on May 13, 2025, constituted the investigative committee to probe a public petition alleging that the lawmaker received ₦1.6 billion from Eketeson Resources International Limited, the contractor handling road projects in Ugep and Ikom.

In a related development, the Assembly has called on the state government to provide outboard engines to riverine communities in Etung Local Government Area to improve water transportation.

The lawmakers urged the Ministry of Transportation and Marine Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, to procure and distribute the engines to ease movement, boost economic activities, and enhance access to healthcare and education.

They also appealed to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other development partners to support the initiative, describing it as vital to improving the quality of life of residents.

The call followed a motion sponsored by Hon. Kingsley Ntui, representing Etung State Constituency.

#JusticeForChanya: Brother Urges First Lady, IGP To Arrest Sister’s Alleged Rapists

The family of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in 2018 following complications from alleged prolonged sexual abuse, has renewed calls for justice, urging First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to intervene.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, John Ameh, Ochanya’s brother, appealed to authorities to ensure that the suspects, particularly the son of one of the accused, are brought to justice.

“If the Inspector General of Police, the First Lady, and the President are really in charge of this country, they must find these people and bring them to justice, no matter how long it takes,” Ameh said.

He expressed frustration that seven years after Ochanya’s death, one of the prime suspects, Victor Ogbuja, remains at large.

Ameh, a journalist, said that he and other family members had received death threats for continuing their campaign for justice.

“The Ogbujas are not acting alone. They have the backing of influential people. Since the renewed calls for justice, I no longer stay at home because I know they’re against the advocacy,” he revealed.

“Our parents are in the village without protection. We’ve written petitions several times, but nothing has been done. My life and that of my family members are in danger.”

He also recalled being attacked in 2018 during a court hearing in Makurdi when Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, the wife of one of the suspects, was arraigned by NAPTIP.

“I was assaulted in court by Mrs. Ogbuja’s younger brother, who threatened to deal with me. I reported to the Benue State Police Command and later to the IGP, requesting protection for witnesses, but no action was taken,” Ameh said.

Ochanya was allegedly sexually assaulted for years by Andrew Ogbuja, a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, and his son, Victor.

In April 2022, the Benue State High Court acquitted Andrew Ogbuja over what it described as insufficient evidence.

His wife, Felicia Ochiga-Ogbuja, was earlier convicted by the Federal High Court in Makurdi and sentenced to five months in prison for negligence after failing to protect the teenager.

Victor Ogbuja remains on the run, while Ochanya reportedly died on October 17, 2018, at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, from vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a complication linked to repeated sexual assault.

Following renewed public attention on the case, several Nigerians have joined the online campaign #JusticeForChanya, demanding accountability from law enforcement.

Among them is Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, who expressed outrage that the alleged perpetrators remain free.

“Seven years ago, the heart-wrenching story of little Ochanya devastated me. I thought the perpetrators were in jail, alas, they were discharged and acquitted,” the senator wrote on Facebook.

She urged the victim’s family to submit a formal petition to her office at the National Assembly, vowing to pursue justice “for the sake of all Nigerian children.”

Naval Chief Rejects Coast Guard Proposal, Pledges Drones, AI To Fight Oil Theft, Piracy

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has rejected calls to establish a separate coast guard, describing the move as unnecessary and counterproductive.

Speaking during his Senate screening, Abbas said the Nigerian Navy already performs the functions typically assigned to a coast guard.

“Creating another agency would only duplicate efforts. It’s better to channel those funds toward boosting naval operations,” he told lawmakers.

He revealed that the Navy recently set up a Special Operations Command in Makurdi, Benue State, to strengthen security along inland waterways connecting Benue and Lokoja.

Abbas also highlighted plans to integrate drones and artificial intelligence (AI) into naval operations to combat oil theft, piracy, and other maritime crimes.

According to him, using advanced technology will modernize surveillance, cut fuel costs, and enhance efficiency in difficult-to-access areas, especially in the Niger Delta and coastal regions.

“We will incorporate more technology, including drones, to tackle maritime crime. A lot of resources are currently wasted fueling boats to reach remote areas. Technology will help us respond faster and more effectively,” he said.

The naval chief explained that traditional fuel-heavy patrols will be complemented by digital and remote surveillance systems, creating a smarter and more cost-effective security framework.

He added that AI and drone monitoring would help detect illegal bunkering and other economic crimes, plugging financial leakages in the petroleum sector.

Responding to questions from Senator Olamilekan Solomon, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Abbas noted that most oil theft occurs in remote creeks and coastal areas.

While individual thefts may seem minor, their cumulative effect is significant. He also shared that the Navy has made progress curbing the use of offshore tankers for transporting stolen crude and is implementing digital vessel tracking systems.

On the military’s deradicalisation programme for repentant criminals, Abbas described it as commendable but emphasized that families of victims should be consulted before granting amnesty.

He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to the Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy, a framework addressing all maritime security challenges, including piracy, oil theft, smuggling, and kidnapping.

“The challenges we face cannot be solved by the military alone. It requires a whole-of-society approach. We must synergise across the armed forces and with civil institutions to make Nigeria safer,” Abbas concluded.

Naira Redesign: Emefiele’s Policy Caused Hardship For Nigerians, Witness Tells Court

The seventh prosecution witness in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) trial, Chinelo Eneanya, has told a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court that the naira redesign policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under former governor Godwin Emefiele caused severe hardship for Nigerians.

Eneanya, an EFCC investigator involved in probing the alleged unlawful redesign exercise, told the court that video evidence presented in court highlighted widespread public frustration, as many Nigerians struggled to meet daily needs and sustain their businesses during the cash crunch.

Led by prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), Eneanya said his team examined a range of evidence, including documents, electronic records, and audiovisual materials, to assess the policy’s impact.

“We looked at the documentary, electronic, and audiovisual evidence of the effect of the naira redesign on the public,” Eneanya stated.

The court admitted multiple exhibits tendered by the prosecution, including documents, video recordings, certificates of identification, certified copies of delivery notes, and notices of meetings.

Six video clips from four national television stations were played, alongside bills of settlement relating to redesigned naira notes for 2022 and 2023.

Defence counsel Olalekan Ojo (SAN) did not object to their admission.

Eneanya added that the investigation revealed that members of the CBN Board and Committee of Governors only became aware of the president’s approval after the redesign exercise had already been implemented.

“In the course of the investigation, we sought to determine how the laws on changes to naira policy were applied or possibly abused,” the witness said.

When Eneanya attempted to comment on the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the redesign, Ojo objected, arguing that a witness cannot testify on a public document he did not author. Justice Maryanne Anenih overruled the objection, noting that the testimony concerned giving evidence on a document, not merely submitting it.

Eneanya confirmed that Emefiele was interviewed during the investigation and that his extra-judicial statements to EFCC investigators were admitted as evidence.

The witness also said the former CBN governor was questioned on whether the Board of Governors approved the naira redesign.

Justice Anenih adjourned the proceedings to November 26, following a request from the defence for additional time to cross-examine the witness.
