Ondo On Alert: Govt Responds To Leaked DSS Memo Warning Of Planned ISWAP Attacks

The government of Ondo State has requested that citizens maintain calm following reports of a leaked security memo from the Department of State Services (DSS) warning of coordinated attacks by ISWAP in certain communities within the state.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, described the memo as routine intelligence shared among security agencies, emphasising that it is being acted upon.

The document, addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure, pinpointed locations such as Oyin‑Akoko, Eriti‑Akoko (Akoko North‑West LGA) and Owo (Owo LGA) as potential targets.

State authorities confirmed that security measures have been ramped up.

The police, under Commissioner Adebowale Lawal, held a high‑powered meeting with stakeholders from the Akoko region to fortify intelligence sharing and community policing.

Government spokespersons reaffirmed that public safety remains the priority and urged residents to go about their daily activities while staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious behavior to security agencies.

JUST IN: UK Adds Nigeria To Warning List Over Poisonous Alcoholic Drinks

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has expanded its travel advisory to include Nigeria along with seven other countries, Ecuador, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Uganda and Kenya, over the risks of methanol poisoning through counterfeit or tainted alcoholic beverages.

Travellers from the UK are being advised to steer clear of homemade or unsealed alcoholic drinks and instead consume beverages only from licensed establishments.

Warning signs such as blurred vision and confusion may signal methanol poisoning, which can lead to serious illness or death.

Methanol is a toxic industrial chemical found in antifreeze and paint thinners, not meant for human consumption.

Authorities say unscrupulous producers sometimes add it to spirits or cocktails to increase volume or reduce costs.

The move follows previous high‑profile international incidents, including the death of six tourists in Laos linked to tainted alcohol.

The warning builds on existing guidance issued for countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, Costa Rica and Fiji.

The FCDO emphasises the importance of checking seals and labels, avoiding drinks served in “buckets” or jugs, and seeking urgent medical care if symptoms of poisoning appear.

Again, Court Refuses Bail For Ex‑Terrorist Negotiator Tukur Mamu

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday once more rejected bail for alleged terrorist negotiator Tukur Mamu, who remains detained at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility.

Presiding Judge Mohammed Umar said that the prosecution has shown consistent diligence in the handling of the case, weakening Mamu’s plea for bail.

He also noted that Mamu’s defence did not present sufficient new material facts to justify bail.

Mamu, arrested on 7 September 2022 in Egypt and repatriated to Nigeria, is facing a 10‑count charge of terrorism financing and related offences in connection with the 2022 Abuja‑Kaduna train attack.

While denying bail, the court granted a medical directive: “Mamu is to be taken to an appropriate hospital for treatment of his health complaints.”

The judge emphasised that in bail considerations, factors include the nature of the charge, the evidence, and whether the defendant may interfere with the trial if released.

The decision marks the third time Mamu’s bail application has been refused since his arraignment on 21 March 2023.

The trial continues before Justice Umar.

147 Stranded Nigerians Return From Libya, NEMA Receives Them In Lagos

A flight carrying 147 Nigerians stranded in Libya touched down at the Cargo Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Tuesday evening, marking the latest phase of the Assisted Voluntary Return programme.

The operation, coordinated by NEMA’s Lagos Operations Office alongside the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, is aimed at ensuring safe and dignified repatriation of Nigerians stranded abroad.

Of the returnees, 100 were adults (32 males and 68 females), 34 were children (18 males and 16 females), and 13 were infants (5 males and 8 females).

Upon arrival, officials from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) conducted biometric registration and documentation to streamline their reintegration process.

NEMA emphasised that the returnees were provided with food, safe drinking water, medical care, ambulance services and counselling, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians abroad who seek to return home.

This arrival is part of the broader “AVRR” (Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration) mechanism supported by IOM.

For instance, in 2024 alone, approximately 4,760 stranded Nigerians returned under this scheme, many of whom had initially travelled irregularly and were exposed to exploitation during their journeys.

Another Rep Member Dumps PDP For APC

Hon. Ojema Ojotu, the House of Representatives member for Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection was announced on the floor of the House during Tuesday’s plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who read Ojotu’s letter of resignation from PDP.

With this move, the APC now holds all federal House seats from Benue State.

Ojotu, who chairs the House Committee on Inland Waterways, cited persistent internal crises, unresolved leadership tussles and deep divisions within the PDP as his reasons for crossing to the ruling party.

During the announcement, a point of order was raised by Hon. Aliyu Madaki (New Nigeria Peoples Party), calling for approval to declare Ojotu’s seat vacant under Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution, which addresses party defection.

However, House Majority Leader Ibrahim Halims countered the motion by relying on Order 7, arguing that a lawmaker may cross over in cases of unresolved party crisis.

Deputy Speaker Kalu then welcomed Ojotu to the APC and assured him of support in his new political alignment.

2027: Why Defection Wave Won’t Save Tinubu – Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned that the recent spate of governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not strengthen the party or enhance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 election.

In a Facebook post, Melaye argued that the so‑called “governor factor” has lost its power to determine electoral outcomes, pointing to the 2023 presidential election as proof that Nigerians are voting beyond the influence of state governors and party machines.

He noted that despite the APC controlling 22 states, it faltered in key regions in 2023, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) performed strongly in states governed by the APC.

“The ruling APC, despite controlling 22 state governments, struggled to maintain coherence and voter confidence,” Melaye said.

He stressed that Nigerians have become more politically aware and independent‑minded, and that 2023 was only a “warning shot”,  the real reckoning is coming in 2027.

“The governors can all decamp to the ruling party and hold hands on the way down; the electorate will ensure it is a spectacular collective defeat,” he warned.

Melaye also described both the APC and PDP as parties “sitting on powder‑kegs” due to internal contradictions, corruption and loss of public trust, while portraying the ADC as a fresh, people‑driven alternative.

“The age of imposed loyalty is giving way to one of independent conviction,” he declared, adding that 2027 will be an “election of the governed, not of governors”.

Tears Of Joy As Anambra Police Rescue Two Children After Nine‑Month Search

After nine long months of uncertainty and heartbreak, two missing children, Sunday Aliya (14) and Ebenezer Emmanuel (12) have been rescued by the Anambra State Police Command, bringing a sombre ordeal to an emotional close.

The case first came to light on January 18, 2025, when the boys’ guardian reported them missing after they went to fetch water at a local borehole and never returned.

The matter was referred to the Command’s State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Gender Section for further investigation.

Acting on intelligence, officers tracked a key suspect, Yusuf, to Katsina State; he provided leads that directed the team to Umunede in Delta State, where Sunday Aliya was found.

Subsequent leads led to the rescue of Ebenezer Emmanuel in Benin City, Edo State.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu commended the persistence and professionalism of the operatives, emphasising the Command’s commitment to pursuing every case “no matter how long it takes.”

The rescued children’s parents, based in Ilorin, Kwara State, have been contacted and arrangements are being made for their formal reunification.

Court Nullifies Ebonyi LG Election, Sacks All Council Chairmen, Councilors

A Federal High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has invalidated the July 2024 local government and councillorship elections, declaring that the polls failed to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Justice H.I.O. Oshomah, who delivered the judgment, ordered the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) and the state government to refrain from organising further council elections until the process fully aligns with the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act.

The ruling stems from a suit brought by Mr. Samuel Udeogu and Mr. Isu Amaechi, with representation by Hamilton Ogbodo and Chief Mudi Erhenede respectively.

After the judgment, lawyer Hamilton Ogbodo stated:

“The local government election conducted in July 2024 in Ebonyi State is no more; it has been cancelled by this court.”

He urged the state government to comply with the court order or face contempt proceedings once the appeal window closes.

Chief Mudi Erhenede pointed out that the judgement reaffirmed a previous ruling by the late Justice Riman, which had nullified the 2022 local government polls in the state, a judgment the state government allegedly ignored by swearing‑in council officials.
