NELFUND Opens Student Loan Portal For 2025/2026 Academic Year
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has officially launched its online student loan application portal for the 2025/2026 academic session, offering financial aid to eligible students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, the application window will open on Thursday, October 23, 2025, and close on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Fresh applicants are encouraged to apply using either their JAMB Registration Number or Admission Number, especially if they have not yet been issued a matriculation number.
In the statement, NELFUND called on higher institutions to show flexibility with registration deadlines and fee payment timelines for students whose loan applications are still being processed.
“Institutions are encouraged to exercise leniency regarding registration and tuition payment for applicants awaiting loan approval,” the agency stated.
It also urged schools that have yet to begin their 2025/2026 academic calendar to formally notify NELFUND with their approved academic schedules, so that appropriate adjustments can be made for their students.
To prevent students from being locked out of the education system due to financial hardship, NELFUND is advocating for temporary registration measures in all institutions.
“We appeal to schools to ensure that no student is denied access to education while their loan is being processed,” the agency emphasized.
CAN Fires Back At Presidency, Insists Christian Genocide Is Real
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accused the Presidency of misrepresenting its position on the ongoing killings of Christians across the country, asserting that what is happening in parts of northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amounts to a “Christian genocide.”
The controversy erupted after the office of Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media & Policy Communication, reportedly described CAN’s remarks as referring to a “so‑called Christian genocide.” CAN said that attribution was false and unfair.
According to a statement signed by Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, “Across many parts of northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, Christian communities have suffered repeated, organised and brutal attacks which have left thousands dead, villages destroyed and families displaced.”
“These are not isolated crimes but a continuing pattern of violence that has persisted for years without justice or closure.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, appealed to the global community not to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged religious persecution.
He warned that such a designation could harm ongoing inter‑faith dialogue and peace efforts.
CAN also urged the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency, fairness and transparency, between faiths and regions, to halt the violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
The association further called on media professionals and government officials to speak responsibly, emphasizing that “careless words can deepen wounds and undermine peace.”
Wabara Demands Release Of Kanu’s Brother, Lawyer, Says Crackdown On Protesters A Serious Dent On Nigeria’s Global Image
Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has demanded the immediate release of all individuals arrested during Monday’s peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
The call came as normalcy slowly returned to the Federal Capital Territory following the confrontation between security forces and demonstrators calling for the liberation of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a court sitting at Kuje, Abuja, a magistrate remanded Emmanuel Kanu (brother to IPOB’s leader) and their lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, along with others.
Wabara sharply condemned the actions of security operatives who fired teargas canisters and allegedly mistreated a journalist covering the protest.
He described the crackdown as “a serious dent on Nigeria’s global image.”
He further warned that such arrests could escalate tensions in the South‑East, emphasising that the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental citizen right.
Comparing the situation to the US “No King” protest involving millions, Wabara challenged Nigerian security agencies to learn from international standards in handling demonstrations.
He also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)‑led federal government, accusing it of resorting to intimidation and brute force against dissenting voices.
Court Order Forcing Marriage Between TikTok Creators Violates Human Rights – NBA
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned an alleged court order in Kano State that reportedly mandates two popular TikTok content creators to marry each other within 60 days.
The creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, became the subject of controversy after a video they posted online, which featured affectionate scenes, was deemed “indecent” by state authorities.
The Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board claimed the content violated public morality and religious norms.
Following their arraignment, Magistrate Halima Wali allegedly issued an order requiring the two to marry as part of a ruling tied to charges of producing and distributing obscene material.
In a swift response, NBA President Afam Osigwe described the reported court directive as an outrageous misuse of judicial power.
“No court in Nigeria has the constitutional authority to compel two people to marry,” Osigwe said.
“Such an order is unlawful, unconstitutional, and a violation of the fundamental rights of the individuals involved.”
Osigwe emphasized that marriage is a voluntary union between consenting adults, and cannot be imposed by any institution, especially as a form of punishment or social correction.
“This alleged ruling tramples on the rights to personal liberty, dignity, and privacy as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” he added.
The NBA president further stated that forcing marriage through a court order represents a serious case of judicial overreach and could erode public trust in Nigeria’s legal system.
“Courts must serve as defenders of justice and constitutional freedoms, not as tools for enforcing morality or cultural norms.”
He called for an urgent review of the case by the appropriate judicial authorities and urged the judiciary to prevent similar unconstitutional decisions in the future.
The NBA also directed its Citizens’ Liberties Committee and Women’s Forum to closely follow the situation and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
This incident follows increased scrutiny over the role of social media in Nigerian society and the response of state authorities, particularly in conservative regions like Kano.
Defection Won’t Break Us, Enugu PDP Still Strong, Says Oruruo
The Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Barrister Steve Oruruo, has affirmed that the party remains strong, united and focused, despite the recent defection of Governor Peter Mbah to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during a media briefing in Enugu, Oruruo stated that the PDP is undergoing a period of reawakening, and remains deeply rooted in its values and legacy.
“Our mission is to energise our supporters and ensure the PDP stays united and motivated,” he said.
“We are creating a sense of rebirth and renaissance. The departure of a few does not equate to the collapse of the party.”
Oruruo dismissed fears that the governor’s exit would cripple the PDP, asserting that the party’s foundation is resilient.
“The values and legacy of the PDP are fundamentally entrenched. This is not the first time a sitting governor has left. Yet, the PDP has always stood firm,” he added.
Oruruo emphasised that under his leadership, the party will uphold principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness.
“We are committed to fairness, equity, and solidarity. Our goal is to ensure that the PDP retains its relevance, value, and substance in the political landscape,” he said.
While acknowledging that losing a sitting governor may present financial and structural challenges, Oruruo remained confident in the strength of the people’s will.
“There may be temporary discomfort, but the will of the masses will always triumph over political turbulence,” he asserted.
The acting chairman highlighted the importance of the South-East in the national structure of the PDP, warning against marginalisation.
“We have consistently championed inclusivity and credible leadership. The South-East must be fully represented in national party calculations. Any attempt to sideline a region will naturally erode people’s trust in the party,” he said.
On the recent defection of Governor Mbah and speculation about potential legislative seat recalls, Oruruo stressed that defections are a constitutional right, and not a cause for panic.
“Defection is allowed by the constitution. What we must do now is rebuild, strengthen our base, and renew our focus on credible leadership,” he stated.
He added that removing defectors is beyond his jurisdiction and not a priority at this time.
“It is not within my power to stop anyone from defecting. My duty is to ensure the PDP remains solid, even in the face of political realignments,” Oruruo said.
While acknowledging internal challenges, Oruruo said the PDP has strong conflict resolution mechanisms.
“Yes, the PDP has internal issues, but we have established systems to address them. The road to our next convention may be bumpy, but we are confident that light lies at the end of the tunnel.”
He called on party members and supporters to remain steadfast, describing the current phase as a test of resilience and a chance for renewal.
“Our commitment is unshaken. The PDP in Enugu remains firm, focused, and ready to rebuild stronger than ever. We are unalloyed in our loyalty and prepared for the future.”
‘Our Identity Isn’t for Sale’, Obidient Movement Disowns Soludo Endorsement, Backs Moghalu For Anambra Poll
The Obidient Movement, a citizens-led political movement inspired by former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, has firmly denied claims circulating online that it has endorsed Governor Chukwuma Soludo for a second term in office.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the Movement described the rumour as false, misleading, and an intentional attempt to exploit the credibility of the Obidient brand for political gain.
“The Obidient Movement has not endorsed, supported, or authorised Governor Soludo or any other candidate outside our declared position,” the statement said.
The Movement reiterated its official backing of George Moghalu as its preferred candidate for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, a choice aligned with Peter Obi’s public endorsement.
Dr. Tanko emphasized that the Movement is not affiliated with any political party, nor does it operate as a political wing of any group.
“We supported Peter Obi in 2023 because of his competence and integrity, not because of a party label. Our values remain unchanged, truth, accountability and good governance.”
The Obidient Movement condemned the unauthorised use of its name and identity, warning that individuals or groups trying to hijack its platform for political advantage would be exposed.
“The Obidient identity is not for sale, not for rent, and not available for political laundering,” the statement declared.
The Movement also urged the media, political actors, and the general public to verify information before sharing, warning against the dangers of disinformation in the political space.
“False claims such as these are intended to deceive the public. We urge Nigerians to stay alert and only trust verified information from our official platforms.”
The group restated its mission to foster a new generation of ethical, accountable leaders, adding that all decisions, including those related to the 2027 presidential election, would be reached collectively and communicated through verified channels.
“The Obidient Movement stands for truth, justice, and a better Nigeria. No amount of propaganda will derail our mission,” Dr. Tanko concluded.
The Obidient Movement emerged during Nigeria’s 2023 presidential elections as a grassroots campaign championing Peter Obi’s candidacy.
Since then, it has evolved into a nationwide citizens’ platform focused on promoting transparency, youth inclusion, and accountable governance.
VIDEO: Enugu Council Boss, Hon. Ogbodo, Leads Demolition Of Kidnap Hideout In Umueze, Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance On Crime
The Enugu State Government has demolished another building linked to kidnapping operations, reinforcing Governor Peter Mbah’s unwavering commitment to fighting crime and insecurity across the state.
The latest demolition occurred on Tuesday at Umueze Awkunanaw in Nkanu West Local Government Area, where a bungalow used by suspected kidnappers was leveled after being identified as a criminal hideout.
The property had previously been the site of a rescue operation, during which security agents freed a kidnapped victim and recovered arms, ammunition, and the victim’s vehicle.
According to security sources, the prime suspect, Igwenagu Ogbodo and his accomplices sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to flee the scene during the rescue mission.
At the demolition site, Nkanu West LGA Chairman, Hon. John Ogbodo, praised Governor Mbah for backing up his security promises with concrete action.
“This operation is a direct result of Governor Mbah’s clear policy, that any property used for criminal activities will be brought down,” Ogbodo said.
“This is not the first demolition under his administration and it certainly won’t be the last.”
He emphasized that the exercise serves as a strong warning to both criminals and property owners who turn a blind eye to illegal activities on their premises.
“I urge all landlords to carefully screen their tenants. If your property is used for crime, it will be demolished, that’s the law,” Ogbodo warned.
Local residents and leaders welcomed the demolition, describing it as long overdue.
Elder Ikechukwu Amos, a resident of Umueze Awkunanaw, confirmed the suspect’s criminal history:
“We’ve known him as a troublemaker. He was recently released from prison and went back to his old ways. We warned him, but he refused to change.”
Another community member, Edeh Chidera Kingsley, added:
“This should serve as a lesson to others. He chose crime over honest work and now faces the consequences.”
Hon. Uchenna Jideofor, the Councillor representing the ward, echoed these sentiments, noting that previous efforts to address the suspect’s behavior had failed due to lack of community cooperation.
“Some of the residents refused to speak up. This demolition should serve as a wake-up call, silence enables crime.”
While the main suspect remains at large, local authorities expressed confidence in their ability to track him down.
“Enugu has the tools, technology, and willpower to capture this fugitive,” said Ogbodo.
“There’s no safe haven for criminals in Enugu anymore.”

Court Reschedules Senator Natasha’s Cybercrime Trial
The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged cybercrime offences to November 24, 2025.
Justice Mohammed Umar, who had originally slated the trial to begin on Monday, was absent from court due to disruptions caused by a protest in Abuja, organized by activist Omoyele Sowore demanding the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Court proceedings resumed on Tuesday, with the judge setting a new date for the trial.
The case, FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025, was initially scheduled for hearing on September 22, following an earlier postponement caused by an objection raised by the defence.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was arraigned on June 30 on a six-count charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Mohammed Abubakar, under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
She was granted bail after her arraignment.
On the September 22 sitting, just as the prosecution, led by David Kaswe, was preparing to open its case and call the first witness, the defence objected.
A television screen had already been installed in the courtroom to facilitate the presentation of evidence when Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, representing Akpoti-Uduaghan, raised a preliminary objection, challenging the court’s jurisdiction to entertain the matter.
West-Idahosa clarified that the objection did not question the content of the charges but was aimed at alleged misuse of the prosecutorial powers by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
He also complained about the non-service of prosecution witness statements to the defence team.
Although Kaswe argued that the defence’s objection should not delay proceedings, Justice Umar ruled that the court must first resolve the jurisdictional challenge before proceeding with the trial.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of transmitting false and injurious information electronically with the intent to malign reputations, incite violence, endanger lives, and disturb public order.
Specifically, she allegedly made statements on April 4, during a public address in Ihima, Kogi State, claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to have her assassinated.
She reportedly repeated these claims during a television interview
Tanker Explosion In Niger State Kills 30, Injures 40
At least 30 people were killed and 40 others severely injured following a tanker explosion on Tuesday morning along the Bida–Agaie Road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred at around 11am between Essa and Badeggi communities, where a petrol-laden tanker had earlier crashed.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were scooping fuel from the fallen tanker when it suddenly exploded, engulfing the area in flames.
Sources revealed that many victims were burnt beyond recognition, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Confirming the incident, Comrade Farouk Mohammed Kawo, Chairman of the Niger State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and a National Ex-Officio of the Tanker Drivers Association, stated that the tanker had been en route from Lagos to the northern region of Nigeria carrying petroleum products.
“This is a tragic and recurring incident,” Kawo said.
“Many of these accidents happen in the same area. Just this month alone, over 30 tanker-related accidents have occurred along this route.”
He lamented the persistent issue of fuel scooping by locals whenever tankers are involved in accidents, highlighting a similar case that occurred the previous Sunday involving a groundnut oil tanker.
Kawo called on the Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago, to take urgent action:
“We’re appealing to the state government to grade and rehabilitate this section of the road. It has become a death trap for both motorists and residents. These losses of lives and property are avoidable.”
