Enugu Moves To Digitize Land Survey Records As Surveyor Prof. Nnam Backs Statewide Survey Digitization Drive

The Enugu State Government has launched a comprehensive land survey digitization project aimed at geo-referencing and updating all registered layouts surveys across the state, a major leap toward modern governance and land reform.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that the initiative, being spearheaded by the office of the Surveyor General, is part of the administration’s Survey Records Modernization Programme.

Professor Victor Chukwuemeka Nnam, a respected fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors and former Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development in the state, is backing the move.

Prof. Nnam, speaking with journalists in Enugu on Saturday, described the initiative as “a transformative step that will revolutionize land administration in the state and protect the integrity of land ownership for generations to come.”

A public notice obtained by DAILY GAZETTE, which was signed by the state’s Surveyor General, Surv. Justus Chime, states that the project will involve the revalidation and digitization of all layouts registered with the state.

The goal, according to the notice, is to build a robust, verifiable digital land database that ensures accurate ownership records, streamlines documentation, and boosts internally generated revenue.

The Governor Peter Mbah administration has set a compliance deadline of December 31, 2025, after which any layout that has not been revalidated will be stripped of official recognition.

This means affected layouts could lose access to critical public infrastructure, title confirmations and future government engagement.

Prof. Nnam said, “this is not just an administrative formality. It is a legal and strategic necessity for all landowners, developers and professionals in the field. Any plot or layout not captured by this deadline risks falling into administrative limbo.”

He called on all registered land surveyors, traditional leaders, host communities and property developers to immediately engage with the process through the office of the Surveyor General or designated local government survey desks.

“This is a one-time opportunity to safeguard your titles, regularize ownership and align with global best practices in land administration. Enugu is setting a new standard and no one should be left behind,” he added.

BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer, Brother Arrested During Abuja Protest

Operatives of the Nigeria Police have arrested Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, alongside Kanu’s brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, during a protest in Abuja on Monday.

The arrests occurred as demonstrators gathered near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in the Federal Capital Territory to demand the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.

Ejimakor confirmed the arrest via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that he and others were being held at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the FCT Police Command in Garki.

“We’ve just been arrested. Myself, Prince Emmanuel and others. We are at FCT COMMAND CID. Myself, Fine Boy and others. No. 1 Zaria Street, Garki 2, Abuja,” he wrote.

The arrest came shortly after Ejimakor posted that police had fired tear gas at protesters who had assembled to begin the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march.

The protest, led by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, had earlier defied a court order restricting demonstrations around key government areas in Abuja, including the Presidential Villa and National Assembly Complex.

No Amount Of Defections Can Rescue APC In 2027 – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected recent overtures from the All Progressives Congress (APC) suggesting that “key ADC figures” will defect to the ruling party, stating emphatically that defections alone will not save the APC in the 2027 general election.

Responding to comments from APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, the ADC said the influx of new members reflects the ruling party’s deepening unpopularity among ordinary Nigerians.

The party also called for urgent amendments to the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act, pointing to concerns over the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the process for appointing justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani declared at a weekend rally that APC now controls roughly 95 percent of the state after the defection of four state assembly lawmakers and five members of the House of Representatives.

This figure was raised as part of efforts to portray the APC as the dominant force in the state.

But the ADC said in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, that the wave of defections only underscores how much the APC fears defeat.

“The truth remains that the APC realizes that it has become the most hated party in Nigeria, and no amount of defections can save the party from Nigerians whose lives and livelihoods the ruling party has destroyed since it came to power,” the statement read.

At a briefing in Lagos, led by Lagos State ADC Chairman Ugochukwu Anaere, the party further alleged that its members have faced threats and attacks, particularly during the 2023 elections, and expressed fear these could be repeated ahead of 2027.

They specifically condemned comments by Mustapha Adekunle (Sego), Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos Chapter, describing his threats as “careless, barbaric, uncivilised, provocative and dreadful.”

They called on relevant authorities to ensure the safety of their members and the security of ballots in upcoming elections.

Cameroon Decides: Tchiroma Cries Foul, Vows To Publish ‘Real Results’ As 92-Year-Old Biya Maintains Lead

Opposition presidential candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary has announced his intention to publish “original” polling station returns to validate his claim of victory in Cameroon’s October 12 election.

His move comes amid preliminary results that favor long‑time incumbent President Paul Biya.

In a statement on Sunday, Tchiroma said his campaign would release electoral trends drawn from official polling station reports (PVs) signed by scrutineers.

He argued the data would help ensure transparency and prevent manipulation.

This challenge follows early projections showing Biya in the lead.

The result remains unconfirmed, as Cameroon’s Constitutional Council is the only body constitutionally authorized to announce the winner.

Tchiroma, 76 and a former minister and government spokesperson, broke ranks with Biya earlier this year to run under a coalition called Union for Change, a unification of opposition parties and civil society groups.

He reiterated that the “people have chosen,” calling on the regime to accept the outcome or risk political unrest.

Tchiroma threatened to share detailed regional breakdowns of vote tallies in the coming hours.

But Biya’s administration and ruling party have dismissed the declarations, citing legal warnings that only the Constitutional Council can announce official results.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has warned that any on‑the‑fly publication of full results could be treated as “high treason.”

In recent days, civic groups and the opposition coalition have affirmed that evidence from polling stations supports Tchiroma’s claims, estimating his lead in key provinces between 60% and 80%, and calling for public vigilance in protecting the people’s will.

Gunmen Invade Lagos Military Barracks Market, Kill Butcher

An attack by unidentified gunmen on Saturday morning claimed the life of a butcher at a bustling market inside a military barracks in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Eyewitnesses say the assailants, about four in number, entered the “Mammy Market” section of the barracks around 8 am and fired shots into the air, sending traders and customers scrambling for safety.

They then made a direct beeline for the stall of the victim, identified simply as Ridwan, and opened fire multiple times.

One trader, known only as “Mummy Blessing”, recalled:

“We were just opening for business when we heard gunshots. Everyone left what they were doing and ran away. Before we knew it, the masked men went straight to where Ridwan was selling meat, shot him, and fled.”

The butcher’s stall was situated near a corner of the market, making any escape route difficult, according to another witness, Musa:

“The men were very close to Ridwan’s stall when they started firing gunshots. So while everyone ran away, Ridwan could not find an escape route. That was how they successfully killed him.”

After being carried to a tricycle and rushed to the barracks’ clinic, Ridwan was reportedly rejected and later confirmed dead.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said she had no record of the incident at the nearest station.

She added that the Commissioner of Police had tasked tactical squads with increased patrols and a crackdown on cult‑related crime across the state.

Coup Plot: Former Governor, Influential Families Linked As Military Probes Alleged Move To Overthrow Tinubu

Amid rising concerns over national stability, fresh details have emerged about a suspected coup plot allegedly targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Investigations have revealed that a former governor from a southern state is under scrutiny for allegedly funding the plot, scheduled for October 25, sources told Daily Trust.

According to insiders, the ex-governor, said to have past ties to the oil and gas sector, is suspected of collaborating with a group of detained military officers, including a Brigadier-General, a Colonel, and several others.

While the extent of his involvement is still being probed, authorities are reportedly reviewing his recent interactions with the officers and may summon him for questioning if credible links are found.

The 16 officers currently in custody, some of whom were attached to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), are being investigated by a panel under the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The panel, composed of senior officers led by a Major General, is said to be operating under strict confidentiality.

Sources revealed that the Brigadier-General involved hails from Niger State.

That the Colonel under investigation is from Nasarawa State, and is a member of the influential Al-Makura family, connected to the former governor of the state.

That the arrest has deeply unsettled the Al-Makura family, with one relative saying: “The entire family is in distress… We pray they are found innocent.”

Additional reports indicate that more military officers and politicians from both northern and southern Nigeria are being monitored in relation to the alleged plot.

Reacting to online reports, notably by Sahara Reporters and Premium Times, linking the arrests to a coup attempt, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) denied the allegations outright.

In a statement released Saturday, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the reports were misleading and dangerous, emphasizing that:

“The cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities was for logistical reasons, not due to any attempted coup.”

He stated that the detained officers were undergoing a routine disciplinary process, and the probe panel’s findings would be made public in due time.

The military reiterated its loyalty to the Constitution and urged the public to ignore “rumours being peddled by enemies of the state.”

On October 4, the military had issued a press release announcing that 16 officers were arrested during a “routine exercise” for indiscipline and breach of service regulations.

The officers reportedly faced career stagnation and had failed multiple promotion exams, according to the statement.

However, sources within military circles suggest that the public statement was deliberately softened, following advice from the Attorney General and other stakeholders, to avoid causing panic among citizens, investors, and the international community.

One insider said the Chief of Army Staff met with President Tinubu in Lagos, reviewed the preliminary report with him, and received presidential approval before releasing the toned-down statement.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media are calling for more transparency. Many are asking the military to disclose the identities of the detained officers and specify the exact offences they committed.

One Facebook user, Adelabi Gbenga, wrote:

“Dear military, kindly avail Nigerians specific offences these people committed before you kpai them. There is no smoke without fire.”

Another user on X (formerly Twitter), Edidiong Jackson, added:

“Don’t put us in darkness. After all, na our taxes they are using to pay you guys.”

2027: I’m Not Afraid Of Losing ADC Ticket To Atiku – Obi

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has dismissed concerns over former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s alleged interest in clinching the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking to newsmen during a visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, Obi said he had no fears about Atiku’s political ambitions, describing him as a “respected elder brother.”

Obi’s response comes amid growing speculation that Atiku may seek to run under the ADC umbrella, especially as some of his loyalists from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reportedly defected to join the emerging ADC coalition, a development that has unsettled some members of Obi’s support base.

Tensions escalated after Atiku recently told BBC Hausa that he would not step aside for any aspirant unless defeated at the ADC primaries, a statement widely interpreted as a declaration of intent for 2027.

Former senator, Shehu Sani, also weighed in via a post on X (formerly Twitter), warning that any candidate would face a tough challenge beating Atiku in a primary race.

But Obi played down the perceived rivalry, insisting the coalition forming around the ADC is focused on rescuing Nigeria, not political turf wars.

“Let me tell you, Atiku is a very dear elder brother and leader that I have a lot of respect for. I’m a member of the Labour Party and part of the coalition forming the ADC for the 2027 presidential election,” Obi said.

“Other parties and people are going to be part of it. All of us are coming together for a common purpose. That’s my belief.”

He emphasized that for the country to move forward, credible individuals across party lines must unite.

“For us to do the right thing for the country, all well-meaning people will have to come together to rescue the country.”

On whether he would contest in 2027, Obi was direct:

“I’m contesting, and I’m sure I will be. People will have to look at who is competent, who has the capacity. And I think I’m qualified. I have the capacity to do the job. I’m saying it over and over again in four years, I can change the trajectory of Nigeria in a positive way.”

He also urged a shift in national discourse from politics to real issues affecting Nigerians.

“We’ve talked too much politics in this country. I was in some villages in Anambra State and could see poverty everywhere. We’re talking about party chairmen, primaries, and things like that.

I want the new Nigeria to be focused on what will benefit the people.” he added.

FG Terminates Port Harcourt–Aba Road Contract With CCECC Over Poor Performance

The Federal Government has terminated the 43‑kilometre Port Harcourt–Aba road contract awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced after inspecting the project on Sunday.

Umahi said the decision was taken because the contractor repeatedly failed to rectify construction defects despite numerous warnings, leaving large sections of the road at risk of collapse even after substantial public funds had been spent.

“Today is the 19th of October, the Controller reported to me that the Aba‑bound of Port Harcourt‑Aba Road being constructed by CCECC is at the verge of total collapse,” the minister said.

He described the project as an inherited one and said his team had been trying to complete one carriageway while monitoring CCECC’s work on the other.

Umahi criticised the firm’s construction methods, saying binder layers had been laid for long stretches without the protective wearing course or properly finished shoulders.

“Their method of construction has been a very serious source of concern, where you will do binder for over a stretch of 30 kilometres and you are not putting wearing. We have issued warnings to CCECC more than 20 times,” he said.

The minister said he had visited the site multiple times.

“I have been here more than seven times. If you get to Port Harcourt end, which they did about two years or thereabouts, the entire road has almost totally failed,” Umahi added, urging the press to document the project’s failure after taxpayers’ money had been expended.

Umahi said the Ministry of Works will seek qualified indigenous contractors to take over and complete the Port Harcourt‑bound section immediately.

He warned, however, that CCECC must still remove the existing binder, work the company had been paid for, and properly reinstate the road where necessary.

“The site handled by CCECC should issue them a 14‑day notice of termination of this job,” the minister declared, adding that if CCECC failed to mill out and replace the binder at its own cost within that period, the government would move to close down all its projects in Nigeria. “If they don’t do that, I will shut down all their projects in Nigeria. I will do that.”

Umahi said he would publish the warnings previously issued to CCECC so the public could see the correspondence, stressing that persistent noncompliance could have legal consequences for personnel on the project.

“When we manage to pay, and then they cannot do the right construction, then they have to pay for it. If from tomorrow they don’t get to start amending this, I will come back and arrest the Chinese people who are on this project because they have taken the money, and they have to maintain these places,” he said.

He expressed disappointment that a contractor handling more than 25 government jobs would deliver such poor workmanship and reiterated that the termination decision had been taken to protect public safety.

“Now it is developing, and very soon vehicles will start falling, and then people will start dying, and nobody will call them. So if they don’t do it, I will get them arrested,” Umahi warned.

How I Went From ‘Waka Pass’ Roles To My First N1m – Funke Akindele

Award-winning Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele has shared an inspiring reflection on her rise in the Nigerian film industry, revealing how she went from playing minor “waka pass” roles to earning her first ₦1 million.

In a video posted on her Instagram page on Saturday, Akindele detailed her humble beginnings, noting that her acting journey began in 1996, during which she struggled to get meaningful roles despite attending countless auditions.

“I started acting in 1996, doing waka pass roles and going from one audition to another. I kept hearing ‘no’ until I finally got a big ‘yes’ with I Need to Know. That was when I earned my first one million naira,” she said.

Her breakthrough came in 1999 when she was cast as Bisi, a lead role in the popular educational TV series I Need to Know.

The role, she said, not only changed her fortunes but marked a major turning point in her career.

However, getting the part wasn’t without challenges. Akindele recalled that she almost lost the role due to her performance during the pilot episode.

“I performed so well during the pilot and was waiting for a call that didn’t come on time. When they eventually called me in, they said I was overacting and asked me to go back and study the character again,” she explained.

It was her younger sister who eventually helped her perfect the role.

After observing Akindele’s performance, she offered some honest feedback and acted out the part of a teenager to help her adjust.

“She told me I didn’t sound like a teenager. Then she read the script and acted it out for me. I picked it up from there, and that was how I truly became Bisi,” Akindele added.

Her portrayal of Bisi resonated with audiences, boosting her visibility and launching her path to becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognisable and successful figures.

On what she did with her first ₦1 million, Akindele shared that the first person she showed the money to was her mother, who advised her to give her tithe before spending it.

“I didn’t have good shoes or decent clothes. I paid my tithe and went to Yaba to buy new ones. The girl who once had nothing finally had something,” she said with pride.
