South Africa’s Defence Minister Named Acting President

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Angie Motshekga, the country’s Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, as Acting President.

The announcement was made on Wednesday via a statement posted by the South African Presidency on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

The decision comes as both President Ramaphosa and Deputy President Paul Mashatile are currently out of the country on official engagements.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, to serve as Acting President of the Republic of South Africa during the concurrent absence from the country of both the President and the Deputy President,” the Presidency stated.

The move was made in line with Section 90(1) of South Africa’s 1996 Constitution, which provides a legal framework for assigning presidential responsibilities when both the President and Deputy President are unavailable.

President Ramaphosa is on an official visit to Ireland and is expected to participate in the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, Belgium on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

During his absence, Motshekga will handle presidential duties in an acting capacity.

This orderly transition stands in contrast to a similar situation in Nigeria last October, when public concern arose after both President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were simultaneously outside the country.

Tinubu was on vacation in the UK, while Shettima was attending official meetings in Sweden.

Despite criticism about a potential power vacuum, the Nigerian Presidency at the time assured citizens that constitutional provisions did not mandate either leader to be physically present in Nigeria to carry out their duties.

I’m The Most Influential Politician In the South-East, Not Peter Obi – Orji Kalu

Senate Majority Whip and former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has boldly declared himself as the most significant political figure from Nigeria’s South-East region, downplaying the influence of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Kalu dismissed suggestions that Obi had become the region’s foremost political leader.

When pressed on whether Igbos should align with Obi ahead of future national elections, Kalu avoided a deep dive, insisting he wouldn’t engage in a serious discussion about Obi unless both were in a live debate setting.

“I’m a member of the APC and I don’t want to discuss Peter Obi. Every time you mention him, I get uncomfortable. I’ve said it before, any time you want to talk about Obi with me, bring him here. Give us two hours, him on one side, me on the other, and we’ll settle it,” Kalu said.

Rejecting the notion that Obi now leads the South-East politically, Kalu asserted that his own record surpasses Obi’s in both impact and reach.

“He’s not my leader. I am the most important politician from that zone,” Kalu said.

He went on to cite his past political accomplishments, including leading the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) to victory in two states and securing 4.9 million votes in the 2007 presidential election.

“We did well with PPA. We had ministers, ambassadors, and other key appointments under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua,” he added.

When asked about his future political plans, particularly regarding another presidential run, the senator said age would not be a limiting factor.

“If I’m healthy and God grants me life, I can still contest. Age is not the issue, it’s about competence. It’s about what’s in my brain and what I can deliver,” he said, referencing Donald Trump as an example of older politicians still pursuing leadership.

Court Orders Arrest Of Former INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu

A Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State, has issued a warrant for the arrest and imprisonment of former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for defying a court order.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi on Monday, September 29, 2025, came shortly before Yakubu formally stepped down from his role as INEC Chairman.

His successor, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, has since assumed the position in an acting capacity.

The contempt proceedings stem from Yakubu’s and INEC’s failure to comply with a court order directing the restoration of the Rufai Omoaje-led National Executive of the Action Alliance (AA) party to the INEC website.

The party had previously filed a suit, FHC/OS/194/2024, contesting what it described as the unlawful removal of its officials from INEC’s portal.

According to a certified copy of the court order obtained by Vanguard, the plaintiffs, Action Alliance and several of its state chairmen, requested that the court enforce its February 17, 2025 judgement, which mandated INEC to reinstate the names of the executive members.

The court order reads in part:

“The Inspector General of Police is hereby directed to effect the arrest of the Defendants, INEC and Professor Mahmood Yakubu, and initiate committal proceedings for contempt within seven days of this ruling.”

The plaintiffs are also seeking Imprisonment of Yakubu and INEC for contempt, Compliance with the prior judgement, including full recognition of the Omoaje-led NEC and Compensation for financial and reputational harm caused by INEC’s non-compliance.

Additionally, the court awarded ₦100,000 in costs against the defendants in favour of the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs in the suit include Professor Julius Adebowale, Engr. Olowookere Alabi, Barr. Chinwuba Zulyke, Oladele Sunday, Simon Itokwe and Araoye Oyewole, representing themselves and 30 other state chairmen of the Action Alliance.

Abuja Lawyer, Co‑Defendant Arraigned, Granted N30 Million Bail Over Alleged Forgery

Abuja lawyers Victor Giwa and Ibitade Bukola have been arraigned at the High Court, FCT (Apo Division) on charges of alleged document forgery, false personation, and fraudulent execution of documents.

The two pleaded not guilty to all three counts brought against them.

According to the charge sheet, on June 28, 2024, the defendants purportedly forged a letter on the letterhead of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Awa Kalu, addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.

The forgery allegedly aimed to divert the AGF’s attention and prevent the arraignment of Giwa before Justice Samira Bature at the High Court, Maitama.

Earlier, the case had been stalled on September 15, 2025, leading the court to issue a bench warrant for Giwa’s arrest, which was eventually carried out.

At the arraignment hearing, Prosecution Counsel Asaph Eristo informed the court that the matter was set for arraignment, and the charges were read in open court.

The prosecution asked the court to remand Giwa, citing possible interference with the ongoing investigation.

Defence Counsel Edwin Anikpenu (SAN) applied for bail, arguing that both accused are legal practitioners, and that Bukola is nursing a child.

He sought to amend the bail application verbally to include Bukola, but the court criticized this approach given the strong legal representation.

The court denied bail to Bukola, ordering that she be remanded at the correctional facility in Suleja, Niger State.

On Giwa’s behalf, Anikpenu asked the court to grant bail on self‑recognition or place him in the custody of a reputable NBA (Garki branch) executive, with assurances he would not tamper with the case.

The prosecution opposed, presenting evidence and a counter‑affidavit asserting that Giwa is a flight risk, especially with public funds allegedly used in his arrest.

After arguments, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie granted Giwa bail in the amount of ₦30 million, with two sureties of equal sum.

Sureties must be civil servants not below Grade Level 16, be residents of Abuja with verifiable addresses and valid IDs, and must present their international passports.

Giwa was to remain in police custody until he perfects the bail terms.

The case has been adjourned to October 15, 2025 for continuation.

Nigerians Advised To Rethink UK Migration Amid Badenoch’s Tougher Immigration Agenda

Nigerians have been cautioned against hastily relocating to the United Kingdom, as the country gears up for stricter immigration rules under new proposals from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

UK‑based public affairs specialist, Dipo Awojide took to X to warn would‑be migrants not to rush into selling properties or quitting stable jobs in Nigeria. He stressed that the ease of transitioning from study visas to permanent residence in the UK is fading.

“If you must study abroad, explore other destinations. Don’t sell your home or resign your job prematurely, the UK system is becoming more restrictive,” Awojide wrote.

His warning follows the unveiling of Badenoch’s “Radical Borders Plan” at the Conservative conference in Manchester, which lays out sweeping changes including: A new enforcement body, dubbed Removals Force, modeled after the U.S. ICE, targeting deportation of 150,000 undocumented migrants annually, Doubling the residency requirement for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from 5 to 10 years, Stricter English language tests and tougher rules for immigrants who have accessed public benefits and Stripping or limiting access to permanent status for beneficiaries of social housing or state support

In response to the sentiment, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) urged caution, advising prospective migrants to “exercise due diligence,” warning that visa overstays or irregular employment could lead to deportation.

The proposed regulations have stoked concerns over labour gaps in sectors such as healthcare, education and hospitality, which rely heavily on immigrant workers. Critics argue that while the government wants tighter controls, it must not stifle vital services.

Awojide clarified his advice was not anti‑migration but a call for better planning.

“If you’re already in the UK, stay calm but stay vigilant. Those still in Nigeria should make informed decisions before taking irreversible steps,” he said.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians are reexamining alternative destinations, including Canada, Australia, and countries within Africa, viewed as having more stable and transparent migration pathways.

Engr. Enyivigbo, who contested to represent Igbo Etiti East Constituency in the 2023 general elections, stated that the governor’s defection aligns with the broader interests of the state, especially in attracting federal presence and fostering developmental partnerships.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Wednesday, the former candidate lauded Governor Mbah’s leadership style and vision, noting that his decision to join the ruling party at the federal level was a necessary step to unlock greater opportunities for the people of Enugu.

“The move to the APC is not about politics as usual, it is about positioning Enugu State for greater relevance and benefit within the Nigerian federation,” Enyivigbo said.

“As a young leader committed to the progress of my constituency and the state at large, I stand solidly behind Governor Mbah.”

$4.5B Fraud: EFCC Submits WhatsApp Evidence Of $400,000 Payment Against Emefiele

A Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday heard new digital evidence in the trial of former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, who faces charges of alleged fraud amounting to ₦233 billion.

Presiding over the resumed hearing, Justice Rahman Oshodi listened as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) presented WhatsApp messages retrieved from the phone of John Adetola, a former executive assistant to Emefiele.

The messages purportedly instructed him to deliver $400,000 “for Oga” and Adetola confirmed having done so.

During his testimony, EFCC operative Alvan Gurumnaan explained how forensic analysts deciphered a conversation code, “PCS,” to mean ₦1,000 in encrypted communications.

He also described how digital records from Adetola’s phone revealed coordinated large transfers and communications with Mr. Eric Eboh.

However, defence lawyers led by Olalekan Ojo (SAN) and Kazeem Gbadamosi (SAN) objected to the admissibility of certain documents, arguing they lacked proper certification under the Evidence Act.

The court reserved ruling on these objections and adjourned until October 9, 2025, when it will decide whether to admit the digital records into evidence.

Emefiele and co‑defendant Henry Omoile deny all charges, which include corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering tied to alleged illicit transactions involving both foreign and domestic currencies.

Certificate Forgery Scandal: PREMIUM TIMES Drags Uche Nnaji’s Spokesman To Court Over Alleged Bribery Claim

PREMIUM TIMES has vowed to take legal action against Robert Ngwu, spokesperson for former Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, over what it calls a false and defamatory bribery allegation.

Ngwu, during an appearance on Channels Television on Tuesday, accused the newspaper of receiving a ₦100 million bribe from the Enugu State Government to run an investigative report exposing the former minister’s alleged certificate forgery.

However, Musikilu Mojeed, Editor-in-Chief and Chief Operating Officer of PREMIUM TIMES, has strongly denied the claim, describing it as a desperate attempt to discredit credible journalism.

“We are not a newspaper that anyone can malign. We have built our integrity for close to 15 years,” Mojeed said on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

“Our work is grounded in truth and accountability. Neither Robert Ngwu nor Uche Nnaji can destroy that.”

Mojeed said the newspaper’s legal team had begun reviewing Ngwu’s comments and would demand he prove the allegation in court.

“He will have to present evidence of how the money was given, who received it, and when. We won’t let this slide,” he said.

During the Channels TV segment, Ngwu admitted he had no concrete evidence to support his claim.

When pressed repeatedly by anchors Kayode Okikiolu and Bukola Coker, Ngwu resorted to vague claims and phrases like “allegedly paid” and “we have our sources.”

Asked directly who paid the alleged bribe, Ngwu named the Enugu State Government but failed to provide documentation, saying only that he received verbal confirmation.

The Enugu State Government has since denied any involvement in PREMIUM TIMES’ investigation.

The bribery allegation surfaced just days after PREMIUM TIMES published a two-year investigation revealing that Mr. Nnaji forged both his university degree and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, credentials he used to gain ministerial appointment in 2023.

The report showed that, at the time Nnaji claimed to have graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), he was still corresponding with the school about a failed terminal course.

This investigative work ultimately led to Nnaji’s resignation from office on Tuesday evening.

“We were tipped off by a whistleblower in 2023,” Mojeed said.

“Our team in Enugu and Abuja followed up, filing FOI requests and digging through records. It was slow, and at one point, UNN ignored our FOI request. But we persisted.”

A breakthrough came when UNN’s new leadership in August 2025 officially confirmed the institution had never issued Nnaji a degree.

“Just today, the university registrar affirmed it again,” Mojeed said during the TV interview.

Following the report, PREMIUM TIMES published further evidence, including letters from Nnaji himself contradicting his graduation claims.

The scandal has sparked national outrage, with many Nigerians demanding tighter scrutiny of public office appointments.

Nnaji’s camp, however, chose to deflect with unsubstantiated counterclaims.

At a press conference called by the ministry (which the ex-minister did not attend), aides, including Ngwu, repeated the bribery allegation without proof.

PREMIUM TIMES says it will not only pursue legal redress against Ngwu, but will also continue to report on matters of public interest without fear or favour.

“This kind of attack is designed to silence watchdog journalism,” Mojeed said.

“But it won’t work. We will continue to hold the powerful accountable.”

Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval For New $2.3bn Loan

During Wednesday’s plenary session, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally requested Senate approval for a new $2.3 billion external loan to support key fiscal and debt management initiatives.

The request was conveyed in a letter read aloud by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the Senate floor.

According to the president’s letter, the loan is intended to fund part of the 2025 Appropriation Act, refinance maturing Eurobonds, and diversify Nigeria’s borrowing options by including Islamic finance products among others.

He stated that the approved 2025 fiscal strategy anticipates $9.27 billion in total new borrowings to bridge the budget deficit, with $1.84 billion to be sourced externally.

The assumptions include an exchange rate of ₦1,500 to the US dollar.

“The external borrowing will be raised through Eurobonds, syndicated loans, bridge financing, or direct funding from multilateral institutions,” Tinubu explained, emphasizing that the approach is aimed at cost optimization and risk management.

A major component of the loan plan is the refinancing of a $1.118 billion Eurobond, originally issued in 2018 at an interest rate of 7.625%, which matures in November 2025.

The president noted that refinancing maturing debts through capital markets or loan syndicates is a standard international practice.

“This ensures continued access to capital, enhances investor confidence, and supports sustainable debt management,” he wrote.

Tinubu stressed that managing upcoming obligations efficiently is crucial to maintaining Nigeria’s fiscal reputation and creditworthiness.

Join March For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release, Sowore Tells Obi, Soludo, Others

Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has issued a bold challenge to prominent figures from the South-East, urging them to physically join a peaceful march to Aso Rock in demand for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Sowore called on Labour Party leader Peter Obi, Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and others to go beyond rhetoric and take direct action.

“I challenge every politician or person of conscience from the Southeast who says they want Nnamdi Kanu released to stop the rhetoric. Time for action is now. Let’s march to Aso Rock Villa,” Sowore posted.

He further declared his readiness to set aside political differences for the cause, saying he would personally lead the peaceful, lawful demonstration to the seat of power.

“Every governor, senator, member of the House, traditional ruler, priest, eze, Igbo person, and every Nigerian who believes in Kanu’s freedom, come out and do more than talk,” he added.

“We go together peacefully, legally, and visibly to demand justice and an end to MNK’s persecution.”

Sowore’s call comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Kanu.

Late last month, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a no-case submission filed by Kanu’s legal team.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that the Federal Government had presented enough evidence, through witness testimonies and exhibits, to establish a prima facie case, requiring Kanu to enter his defence in the terrorism-related trial.

The court scheduled October 8, 2025, to receive a medical report from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which would guide the setting of a new trial date.

Kanu filed the no-case submission after the prosecution concluded its presentation, which included five witnesses and several exhibits.
