World Will Laugh At Us If Dangote Refinery Shuts Down, Gov Sule Warns PENGASSAN

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has cautioned that Nigeria would be ridiculed on the world stage if disagreements disrupt operations at the Dangote Refinery.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Sule called for urgent dialogue among the refinery management, unions, and the federal government to stem rising tensions.

“There’s been a breakdown in communication,” Sule remarked.

“PENGASSAN and Dangote must sit at the same table, we cannot allow such a critical institution to run down. The world will laugh at us.”

Sule emphasized that the refinery is far more than a private enterprise, it is a national asset.

He noted that the facility has spared Nigeria exorbitant costs tied to maintenance and petroleum importation.

“This refinery belongs to Nigeria, not just Dangote,” he said.

“It has rescued us from many challenges. We should no longer fear issues with fertilizer and petrochemicals.”

The governor appealed for peace among the involved parties, urging PENGASSAN, Dangote management, and the federal government to collaboratively resolve the conflict.

“The Dangote Refinery is here to stay, it already exports products abroad. We cannot afford disruption,” he added.

Addressing allegations of mass dismissals, Sule defended the refinery’s operations.

“Dangote didn’t wake up one day and sack workers en masse. He needs workforce to run the operations,” he stated, adding that the company employs thousands and that union actions should not misinterpret management’s decisions.

The standoff is largely rooted in a dispute over gas supply cuts. Governor Sule warned that such disruptions could cripple refinery activity.

“It’s devastating. In the sugar sector, pipes rusted due to inactivity. We must avoid the same for Dangote,” he cautioned.

Meanwhile, PENGASSAN has mobilized protests over the alleged dismissal of over 800 Nigerian staff at Dangote.

Union members even barricaded several petroleum regulatory offices in Abuja, demanding redress.

In its response, Dangote denied violations, claiming the restructuring was for safety and efficiency. It affirmed that only a limited number of its 3,000 Nigerian staff were affected and pointed to the injunction obtained restraining PENGASSAN from engaging in strikes against the refinery.

On Monday, the National Industrial Court, led by Justice Emmanuel Subilim, placed an interim injunction preventing PENGASSAN from blockading or striking at Dangote.

The judge reasoned that preserving industrial peace outweighed potential union actions. A follow‑up hearing is slated for 13 October 2025.

At the same time, the Federal Government stepped in, calling on all parties to pause hostilities and convene in Abuja for emergency talks.

Labour Minister Muhammad Dingyadi appealed for calm and urged the union to retract its strike notice.

FG Cancels Independence Day Parade, Celebrations To Continue

The Federal Government has officially cancelled the parade scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

While no specific reason was provided for the cancellation, the government emphasized that the move does not reduce the importance of the Independence Day celebration.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary,” the statement read.

“The government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

Other events planned for the celebration tagged “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” will proceed as scheduled.

The statement also acknowledged any inconvenience the cancellation might cause and appealed for understanding.

“The government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation,” it added.

Furthermore, the statement called on Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests to continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, which it described as essential for building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Earlier, the Federal Government had declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to mark the 65th Independence anniversary.

FCT Council Polls: Wike Backs APC’s Maikalangu For AMAC Chairmanship

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has formally announced his support for Christopher Maikalangu, the APC candidate vying for the Abuja Municipal Area Council Chairmanship in the upcoming February 2026 elections.

Last week, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) authorized political campaigns for the area council elections.

In a statement, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed campaign activities will span from 24 September 2025 to midnight 19 February 2026.

Maikalangu, who secured the APC nomination at the party primaries on 26 June 2025, obtained 51 votes to win his ticket.

At the flag‑off ceremony for roadworks connecting Tunga Madaki and several neighboring communities to the airport, Wike said Maikalangu had asked him to remind the President of the need to compensate the affected residents for the second runway project at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Wike urged locals to back Maikalangu in the February polls and anticipated that after the election, the candidate would play a role in commissioning the infrastructure in June 2026.

“Now that INEC has said area councils can campaign openly  you all know where we are heading,” he said.

Wike further asserted that President Bola Tinubu has ordered full compensation for communities whose lands were acquired for the runway and that connecting their settlements by roads had long been their demand.

The Minister described the inauguration as a fulfillment of a promise made by the President and called the day’s project a sign of a “listening government.”

He concluded by urging residents to imagine the development that will follow by June, when roads are completed and “Mr. Maikalangu will do the needful.”

Court Declares Pat Utomi’s Shadow Govt Unconstitutional

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled against Professor Pat Utomi and his associates, ordering them to cease plans to establish a shadow government in Nigeria.

In a judgment delivered on Monday, Justice James Omotosho declared the concept of a shadow cabinet, often modeled after parliamentary systems, as unconstitutional and inconsistent with Nigeria’s presidential system of governance.

The case was filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), which raised concerns over the legality and implications of forming an alternative government structure outside the one recognized by the constitution.

“Section 14(2)(c) of the Constitution makes no allowance for a shadow government,” the judge stated.

“The defendant cannot use foreign constitutional models to mislead the Nigerian public. Such a concept is alien to our system and is hereby declared void.”

The court emphasized that Nigeria’s constitutional framework does not provide room for any form of parallel governance, regardless of its intended symbolic or advisory nature.

Utomi, a professor of political economy and former presidential hopeful, has recently stirred public debate by proposing a shadow cabinet, a group of policy experts intended to mirror and critique the official federal administration.

He argued the initiative would promote accountability and policy alternatives, similar to systems practiced in countries like the United Kingdom.

In response to the ruling, Utomi has claimed that Nigerians are mobilizing 500 lawyers in his defense, asserting that the court’s decision infringes on freedom of association and political expression.

The court’s verdict comes amid heightened political discourse around governance reforms, with critics warning that parallel political structures could confuse citizens or undermine national institutions.

Trump Threatens 100% Tariff On Foreign-Made Films, Says U.S Industry Has Been “Stolen”

U.S President Donald Trump has once again set his sights on international trade, this time targeting the global film industry.

In a post shared Monday on his Truth Social platform, Trump proposed a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside the United States, arguing that the American film industry has been unfairly “stripped” by foreign competition.

“It’s like stealing candy from a baby,” Trump wrote, accusing other countries of siphoning off revenue and opportunities from Hollywood.

The announcement follows closely on the heels of a broader tariff agenda, which includes planned duties on branded pharmaceuticals, heavy trucks, and furniture, some as high as 100%.

Trump has said these measures are aimed at reversing what he views as decades of economic loss for American industries.

Trump singled out California Governor Gavin Newsom, describing him as “weak and incompetent,” and blamed the state’s leadership for contributing to the decline of the U.S film industry.

California, long the heart of global film production, has struggled in recent years with economic setbacks and labor unrest.

“To solve this long-time, never-ending problem,” Trump wrote, “I will be imposing a 100% tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.”

So far, no specific implementation timeline or detailed policy plan has been released.

It’s also unclear whether television content, which has become a dominant force in the entertainment economy, would fall under this proposed tariff.

This isn’t the first time Trump has floated such a move. In May 2025, he warned that the U.S film industry was “dying a very fast death” and directed the Department of Commerce and U.S Trade Representative to explore a 100% duty on foreign-produced movies.

The impact of such a tariff remains uncertain. While Hollywood still generates significant revenue, more than $279 billion in sales and 2.3 million jobs as of 2022, according to the Motion Picture Association, the sector has faced serious challenges.

The COVID-19 pandemic, changing viewer habits, and a series of labor strikes have slowed recovery efforts.

Trump’s film industry tariff threat is part of a wider economic strategy targeting multiple industries he says have been “hollowed out” by offshoring and unfair trade practices.

Just last Thursday, he announced plans to implement tariffs ranging from 25% to 100% on branded pharmaceuticals, kitchen cabinetry, upholstered furniture and heavy-duty trucks.

He said 100% tariffs would be placed on pharmaceutical companies that fail to manufacture their products within the U.S.

“North Carolina has completely lost its furniture business to China and other countries,” he declared, defending the proposed measures.

2027: Jonathan Will return To Aso Rock As President, Gana Declares

Former Minister of Information and veteran politician Prof. Jerry Gana has announced that Goodluck Jonathan will contest and reclaim the presidency in the 2027 election under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform. Gana made the declaration during the PDP state congress in Minna, Niger State.

Speaking to journalists, Gana asserted that Nigeria has had two presidents since Jonathan’s exit and now people are yearning for his comeback.

“In 2015, Jonathan said his ambition was not worth the blood of Nigerians. Since then, two different presidents have served. Nigerians are now demanding the return of our friend Jonathan,” he said.

At the same event, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State echoed the sentiment that the PDP is mobilizing and preparing for the 2027 contest.

“We’re reshaping the PDP to restore public trust and confidence ahead of 2027,” the governor said.

During the congress, Aliyu Halidu was elected as the new state chairman, while Khadi Kuta retained the position of Secretary and Salome Ndakosu emerged as the Woman Leader.

In his acceptance speech, Halidu called on party members to unite in the mission to bring back a government that serves the people.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the state level criticized Atiku Abubakar for what it described as his exploitation of the recent terror attack in Madagali, Adamawa State. The APC labeled his comments “insensitive and politically motivated.”

According to the APC’s state publicity secretary, Atiku “rushes to issue hollow statements” rather than standing with victims, particularly in crises.

They also accused him of being silent during earlier Boko Haram incursions yet politically opportunistic now.

Tinubu Not Qualified To Seek UN Security Council Seat, Failed To Secure Nigeria – ADC Fires Back

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the country’s deepening security crisis, arguing that Nigeria is in no position to seek a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

In a statement on Saturday, ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said the Federal Government has failed to fulfil its primary responsibility of safeguarding citizens’ lives and property, and therefore lacks the credibility to campaign for a global security leadership role.

The party described the ongoing spate of killings, kidnappings, and extortion by armed groups across the country, particularly in the northern region, as evidence of the government’s inability or unwillingness to protect its people.

“How can a government that cannot ensure peace or security at home demand a seat at the table where global security is discussed and expect to be taken seriously?” Abdullahi questioned.

He referenced the recent attack on a mosque in Yandoto village, Zamfara State, where gunmen killed worshippers and abducted several others, as well as similar tragedies in Katsina and Zamfara over the past two months that have claimed over 140 lives.

According to the party, Amnesty International reported in May 2025 that over 10,000 Nigerians have died in violent attacks by armed groups since Tinubu took office.

“These are not just statistics, they were human beings, Nigerians, who were promised ‘renewed hope’ by this administration,” the ADC stated.

The ADC also criticised the President for failing to attend the commissioning of 874 new military officers at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna on Saturday, marking the second consecutive year he missed the significant national event.

The party noted that President Tinubu instead travelled to Lagos to commission the renovation of the National Arts Theatre, a decision they called “misplaced and tone-deaf,” especially amid the current security crisis.

“At a time when the morale of the armed forces needs boosting, the Commander-in-Chief chose to celebrate infrastructure instead of standing with our military,” the party said.

ADC further alleged that bandits in Zamfara State have begun operating like a parallel government, extorting over ₦56 million from farmers to access their lands.

“When non-state actors collect taxes, control movement, and kill with impunity, it’s no longer just insecurity, it’s a breakdown of the state. The territorial integrity of Nigeria is under threat,” the party said.

They accused the Tinubu administration of ignoring this collapse, noting that while political conflicts in Rivers State received swift federal intervention, mass killings in the North are often met with silence or ‘routine condolence tweets’.

The ADC condemned what it called the “tragic indifference” of the Tinubu-led administration, asserting that leadership on the international stage begins with responsibility at home.

“The world sees through the speeches delivered in New York. They see villages turned into killing fields. They see a government losing control of its territory,” Abdullahi said.

The party demanded an immediate state of emergency in Zamfara State and a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security strategy.

Build Your Own Refinery, Stop Attacking Dangote – CSOs To PENGASSAN

A coalition of 45 civil society organizations (CSOs) has criticised the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) for its ongoing confrontation with the Dangote Refinery, urging the union to focus on solutions rather than disruption.

In a statement released on Sunday, the CSOs, which include the Unemployed Youth Initiative (EUYI) and Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative (GoDDI), declared their full support for Dangote Refinery amid the labour dispute.

Speaking jointly through Comrade Danesi Momoh Prince and Igwe Ude-Umanta, the coalition leaders said PENGASSAN’s actions were unjustified and harmful to Nigeria’s progress.

“If PENGASSAN is truly interested in the welfare of its members and the development of the country, it should consider building its own refinery rather than interfering in the operations of a privately-owned one,” the statement said.

The group challenged PENGASSAN’s legitimacy to meddle in Dangote Group’s internal affairs, especially given its lack of effort in reviving the long-dormant NNPCL-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna.

The coalition emphasized that the Dangote Refinery, a $20 billion private sector investment, has helped reposition Nigeria as a potential exporter of refined petroleum products, after decades of reliance on imports.

“How can the same people who stood by while national refineries crumbled now turn around to sabotage a private investment that’s bringing pride and hope to the nation?” they asked.

They alleged that PENGASSAN, in the past, contributed to fuel scarcity and industrial unrest for selfish gains and now seeks to derail progress simply because the system is no longer playing to their advantage.

“PENGASSAN has, time and again, acted against the interest of ordinary Nigerians. When there were endless fuel queues, they profited. Now that those queues have vanished due to Dangote’s efforts, they are upset and want to drag us backwards,” the statement read.

The coalition labelled PENGASSAN’s current campaign as “malicious”, describing it as an attempt to destabilize a transformative project that has elevated Nigeria’s global profile.

They called on Nigerians to see through what they termed a “self-serving agenda” and urged relevant authorities to ensure that private investments critical to the country’s economic future are not undermined by union politics.
