FULL LIST: Anglican Church Elects 15 New Bishops Across Nigeria

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has elected 15 new bishops to oversee one vacant and 14 newly created dioceses, marking a significant step in its ongoing mission expansion across the country.

The announcement was made following the Episcopal Synod of the House of Bishops, which took place on Thursday at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Okesha, Ado-Ekiti, within the Ekiti Diocese.

The election was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by Korede Akintunde, the Church’s Communication Officer.

Presiding over the Synod, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, explained that the creation of the new dioceses aligns with the church’s broader mission strategy to deepen its presence nationwide.

“These elections are part of our vision to strengthen evangelism and church growth,” the Primate said.

He noted that while the Synod elected bishops for most of the new dioceses, the election for the Missionary Diocese of Eket was postponed due to the recent death of the Bishop of Uyo Diocese, as the new diocese is to be carved out of that jurisdiction.

Primate Ndukuba called on members of the Church to pray for the bishops-elect, their families, and the dioceses they are set to lead, emphasizing the spiritual responsibility they are undertaking.

He also announced that the consecration ceremony for the new bishops will be held on November 9, 2025, in Abuja, with the formal inauguration of the dioceses to follow.

Full-Fledged Dioceses:

1. Diocese of Irele/Ese-Odo – Venerable Samuel Ogunmiluyi

2. Diocese of Ekiti South – Venerable Francis Bankole

3. Diocese of Kalabari – Venerable Boma Briggs

4. Diocese of Lagos South West – Venerable Dr. Adewole Ajayi

5. Diocese of Omoku – Venerable Richard N. Okpara

6. Diocese of Ozoro – Venerable Dr. Benjamin Idume

Missionary Dioceses:

1. Missionary Diocese of Idanre – Venerable Bode Otenaike

2. Missionary Diocese of Ikom – Venerable David Michson

3. Missionary Diocese of Keffi – Venerable Dr. Paul Dajur

4. Missionary Diocese of Nasarawa – Venerable Dr. Luka B. Allu

5. Missionary Diocese of Ogoja – Venerable Ifeanyi Akunna

6. Missionary Diocese of Oyo South – Venerable Dr. Ebenezer Familoni

7. Missionary Diocese of Oyun – Venerable Solomon Adewumi

8. Missionary Diocese of Takum – Rev’d Canon Rika G. Ibrahim

9. Missionary Diocese of Zuru – Venerable Dr. Ayuba Kanta

Earlier this week, the Church officially approved the creation of 15 new dioceses during its Standing Committee Meeting held between September 15–19, 2025, also in Ekiti State.

This followed the lifting of a moratorium on the creation of new dioceses in September 2024, after a series of rigorous inspections, validations and administrative assessments.

2027: Plot To Return Jonathan A Dangerous Gamble, Will Spark Crisis – Wike Warns

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly criticised ongoing calls for former President Goodluck Jonathan to return to contest the 2027 presidential election, warning that such moves could plunge the nation into political instability.

Wike made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired Thursday night on Channels Television.

Wike described the push for Jonathan’s return as hypocritical and politically reckless, recalling how many of those now backing him were the same individuals who deserted him during his failed re-election campaign in 2015.

“Anyone saying Jonathan should come back just to do one term is inviting crisis. These are the same people who undermined him in 2015,” Wike said.

“Now that he’s earned global respect, they want to drag him back into political controversy.”

He dismissed the “one-term presidency” argument as a deceptive tactic, warning that such a move could disrupt Nigeria’s fragile political balance, particularly between northern and southern interests.

While acknowledging that Nigerians are experiencing economic hardship, Wike defended President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the current reforms, though tough, are necessary for long-term stability.

“There’s hardship, no doubt. But efforts are being made. In Abuja, I see the projects happening every day. That shows the government is serious about development.”

Wike also took a swipe at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who recently warned of a looming revolution due to poverty and hunger. Wike dismissed Atiku’s remarks as insincere and opportunistic.

“Atiku was Vice President for eight years. What did he do then to reduce hunger? Now he talks about revolution, it’s laughable. I don’t even read what he says anymore.”

The minister accused opposition figures of trying to weaponize the current economic climate for political gains, urging Nigerians to remain patient while reforms take root.

Despite Wike’s warnings, there have been renewed efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to lure Jonathan back into the political arena.

In August, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State confirmed that the party was considering Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as possible presidential candidates for 2027.

“Certainly, former President Jonathan is one of the candidates we’re looking at, if he’s willing to return,” Mohammed had said, describing Jonathan as “one of the most celebrated politicians in Nigeria today.”

EFCC Re-arraigns Ex-Minister Agunloye Over Alleged $6bn Mambilla Project Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned Dr. Olu Agunloye, a former Minister of Power and Steel, on fresh charges related to the controversial $6 billion Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project.

The re-arraignment took place on Thursday before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal High Court, Apo, Abuja.

Agunloye, who served in the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is now facing a seven-count amended charge brought against him by the EFCC.

According to the EFCC, Agunloye is accused of Corruption, Abuse of office and Fraudulent award of contract to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited.

The prosecution claims that Agunloye knowingly ignored a Presidential directive issued during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on May 21, 2003 and just two days later, on May 23, wrote a letter to Sunrise Power, falsely purporting to grant government approval for the construction of the 3,960-megawatt Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station.

One of the charges also links Agunloye to Leno Adesanya, who is described as “at large” and allegedly connected to Sunrise Power.

The EFCC claims both men used a falsified document titled: “Construction of 3,960MW Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Station on a Build, Operate and Transfer Basis” to deceive the Federal Government into committing to the multi-billion-dollar energy project.

The EFCC maintains that the offences violate sections of the Penal Code involving fraud, false documentation, and abuse of public office, and are punishable under Nigerian law.

When the amended charges were read in court, Agunloye pleaded not guilty to all counts.

EFCC counsel M.K. Hussein requested a new date to continue the testimony of the third prosecution witness, who had previously taken the stand.

Justice Onwuegbuzie subsequently adjourned the case until October 9, 2025, for continuation of trial.

You’re Lucky Tinubu Respects Rule Of Law – Wike To Sowore

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has slammed activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” on social media.

In an August 25 tweet, Sowore criticized Tinubu for claiming during a visit to Brazil that corruption no longer exists under his administration. Sowore called the statement a blatant lie, tweeting:

“This criminal @officialpbat actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

Following the tweet, Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) filed defamation charges against Sowore, accusing him of spreading false information in violation of the Cybercrimes and Terrorism Prevention laws.

The DSS also asked social media platforms Meta and X (formerly Twitter) to take down the post, labeling it a national security threat.

Sowore refused, calling the DSS actions an attempt to silence critics.

Speaking at the flag-off of the Arterial Road N1 project in Wuye, Abuja, on Thursday, Wike said Sowore was fortunate to have a President like Tinubu who believes in the rule of law.

“In this country, people go on social media and say the President is a criminal and nothing happens,” Wike said.

“No matter how people criticize leaders like Trump in the U.S, have you ever heard an American call their President a criminal publicly? Here, people say anything and walk free. You’re lucky to have a President who respects the rule of law. Others might not be so tolerant.”

Wike also addressed the ongoing strike by the FCT branch of the Association of Resident Doctors.

He stated that the 2025 budget, approved in July by the National Assembly, includes ₦25 billion for the health sector.

He acknowledged that the doctors are demanding payment of allowances and recruitment of more staff, but insisted that due process must be followed.

“People say we focus on roads and neglect health. That’s not true. We’ve allocated ₦25 billion to health in the 2025 capital budget,” Wike explained.

“They say allowances are unpaid and doctors haven’t been employed. I told the Civil Service Commission to go ahead, I’m not a doctor. Let them do their job. But everything must follow procedure.”

He said while demonstrations are permitted in a democracy, they won’t stop government activities.

“I told the SSS to let them protest. But no one can stop me from doing my job. Nobody will blackmail me.”

Wike also warned civil servants against using government platforms for political agendas.

“If you want to join a political party, go ahead. But don’t use the civil service to play politics. When the time comes, face me politically, not bureaucratically.”

US Judge Orders Deportation Of Palestinian Activist Mahmoud Khalil

A U.S immigration judge has ordered the deportation of Palestinian-American activist Mahmoud Khalil to either Algeria or Syria, citing omissions on his green card application.

Judge Jamee Comans, presiding from Louisiana, ruled that Khalil “wilfully misrepresented material fact(s) for the sole purpose of circumventing the immigration process.”

In response to the ruling, Khalil issued a statement through the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), saying:

“It is no surprise that the Trump administration continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of free speech.”

Khalil, 30, is a permanent U.S. resident of Palestinian descent and a key figure in the 2024 Gaza war protests at Columbia University, where he was a student.

His lawyers confirmed they will appeal the decision, noting that federal court orders still prohibit his detention or deportation.

Khalil was arrested in March 2025 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under a sweeping policy by the Trump administration, which accused universities of failing to address antisemitism on campus.

Khalil, born in Syria and a citizen of Algeria, spent three months in ICE detention in Louisiana before a federal judge ruled in June that he did not pose a flight risk or danger to the community, ordering his release.

During his detention, Khalil’s wife, a U.S. citizen, gave birth to their son.

The U.S government accused Khalil of leaving out key information on his immigration documents, including former affiliations with UNRWA (the UN agency for Palestinian refugees) and employment at the British Embassy in Beirut.

Khalil described the allegations as politically motivated:

“When their first effort to deport me was set to fail, they resorted to fabricating baseless and ridiculous allegations in a bid to silence me for speaking out and standing firmly with Palestine, demanding an end to the ongoing genocide.”

Former President Donald Trump, who is running for re-election, has been vocal in his criticism of pro-Palestinian activists.

He has repeatedly accused them, including Khalil, of supporting Hamas, which the U.S. designates as a terrorist group.

Trump previously described Khalil’s arrest as “the first of many to come.”

In June, Khalil’s legal team filed a $20 million lawsuit against the U.S. government, alleging false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, and damage to his reputation through claims that he is antisemitic.

Khalil’s high-profile involvement in the 2024 Columbia University Gaza protests brought national attention.

He acted as a mediator between students and university administration but denied being a leader of the student group Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), which led calls for the university to divest from Israel and support a ceasefire.

“I only served as a spokesperson for protesters and as a mediator with the university,” Khalil told the Associated Press.

Supporters of Israel have accused him of organizing the protests and influencing the university’s political climate.

Nigeria Ends Multi-Centre Passport Production After 62 Years

In a major overhaul of Nigeria’s passport processing system, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has officially stopped producing passports at multiple centres across the country.

For the first time since the NIS was founded in 1963, the country has now adopted a centralised passport production system.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the development on Thursday during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.

“This marks a historic milestone. For the first time in 62 years, passport production in Nigeria is now fully centralised,” the Minister said.

According to him, the transition is a part of broader reforms aimed at boosting efficiency and cutting down on delays in passport issuance.

While older machines were limited to producing around 250 to 300 passports daily, the new system is capable of handling 4,500 to 5,000 passports per day.

“With this technology, we can now meet daily demand in just four to five hours of operation,” Tunji-Ojo added.

The minister emphasized that the goal is to deliver passports within two weeks, and eventually reduce it to one week, citing automation and system optimization as key to achieving that promise.

He also explained that the centralised system aligns with global best practices, improves document security, and ensures consistent quality across all passports issued.

“This reform is not just about centralisation; it’s about setting a new standard for productivity and integrity in passport services,” he said.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated that the move fits into President Bola Tinubu’s broader agenda for reforming public services and restoring trust in government institutions.

He added that the new system will bring services closer to Nigerians through improved delivery, not just in terms of speed but also reliability.

“This is a total reform of the passport system in Nigeria, and a bold step toward a culture of service excellence,” the minister concluded.

I’ve Made Peace With Fubara, Second Term Not A Priority Right Now – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, says he has reconciled with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, putting to rest months of speculation about a prolonged rift between the two.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Wike emphasized that the political tension in Rivers State has been resolved, and he is no longer in conflict with the governor.

He, however, downplayed talk about Fubara’s potential re-election, saying, “second term is not an issue yet.”

Wike confirmed that he remains in contact with Governor Fubara and stressed that their relationship has been mended.

“I spoke with the governor yesterday,” Wike said. “He told me he was returning this morning. I don’t know whether he has resumed or not, that’s not for me to say. I am not his CSO. But yes, we’ve been speaking. We have made peace.”

“I wouldn’t have spoken to Fubara if I hadn’t forgiven him. I don’t speak to a man I’ve not forgiven. I am at peace with Governor Fubara,” he added.

Wike accused some political actors of fueling the crisis by spreading misinformation and creating unnecessary panic.

“Some people just love crisis. They go on TV, shout and pontificate, misrepresent facts, and try to confuse the public. We’ve had enough. Enough is enough,” he said.

He praised President Bola Tinubu for stepping in to broker peace among stakeholders, including the State Assembly, federal lawmakers, and both himself and the governor.

“If we didn’t want peace, we could have done many things to ensure the emergency rule stayed. But we didn’t,” Wike noted.

Amid criticisms that the Rivers State local government elections were rushed and manipulated, Wike defended the process, saying it was neither unilateral nor illegal.

“RSIEC had already announced the election timeline. It was not a one-man affair,” he explained.

“Under emergency rule, Mr. President had the constitutional power to suspend parts of the law and make regulations for governance. Everything was done within the law.”

He also dismissed claims that the elections were conducted to favor his political interest.

“How did it go my way? The governor and I met, we discussed. In fact, I went to his house at 1 a.m. to speak with him. Who does that if they want to destroy peace?” he asked rhetorically.

When asked about backing Fubara for a second term, Wike refused to be drawn into the conversation.

“Let’s not bring up what can cause unnecessary crisis. We still have two years. Let us focus on helping the governor to deliver governance. Rivers people want development, not second term debates.”

Responding to allegations that he influences appointments in the Rivers State government, Wike flatly denied the claim.

“I have no candidate. Even if the governor comes to me for advice, I’ll only tell him not to destroy what we’ve built. Move the state forward.”

Addressing speculations over a power tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, Wike dismissed the claims of internal strife.

“There was never a disagreement. Those who want to cause crisis are the ones bringing up who is leader or not. Leadership is not by shouting,” he said.

“The governor handles administration. But political leadership is a different matter,” he concluded.

Enugu Police Nab Four Armed Robbery Suspects, Recover Weapons, Stolen Items

The Enugu State Police Command has scored a major win in its ongoing crackdown on violent crime, arresting four armed robbery suspects in a string of successful operations that also led to the recovery of locally made firearms and other stolen items.

According to a statement released on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrests were carried out in separate incidents between March and September 2025, showcasing the sustained efforts of law enforcement to curb criminal activities across the state.

The first arrest took place on March 17th, around 11:40 pm when operatives from the Ikirike Division and the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad responded swiftly to a distress call along Agbani Road.

There, they apprehended 25-year-old Okechukwu Anthony in the act of attempting to rob a man of his smart wristwatch.

A locally fabricated pistol, designed to resemble a Beretta but lacking a magazine and ammunition, was found on the suspect.

Authorities say his prompt arrest averted what could have been a more serious attack.

Just hours later, at about 3:15 p.m. on the same day, officers from the 9th Mile Division responded to a reported robbery in progress at Uzo-Nwa Money, Ngwo, in Udi Local Government Area.

Upon arriving at the scene, police disrupted the suspects mid-robbery. Although one of the attackers managed to flee, the operatives, supported by vigilant community members, arrested Chukwudi Stephen Ngwu (36) and Chibuike Ohaekelem (23).

Recovered from the scene were another locally made pistol, similar in appearance to a Beretta, and a small bag of rice believed to have been used as bait in the heist.

Initial investigations reveal the suspects, along with their still-at-large accomplice, had posed as passengers in a tricycle (keke) from New Market, Enugu, carrying the rice to mislead the unsuspecting driver before launching their attack.

In a separate incident on September 15th, at approximately 4:10 am, officers from the Ogui Division, with help from residents, apprehended 29-year-old Oluchukwu Stanley while he was attempting to rob a home in Ogui-Nike.

Police say Stanley had scaled the fence of a residential compound and tried to snatch a victim’s phone.

His plans were thwarted when the victim raised an alarm, alerting neighbors and the police. The suspect was overpowered and another locally made pistol was recovered at the scene.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the swift action and professionalism of the officers involved in all three operations.

He reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for criminality and its commitment to protecting life and property in Enugu State.

“These arrests reflect our determination to take the fight to the doorsteps of criminals,” CP Giwa said.

“We will not relent in our efforts to make Enugu a safe place for all residents.”

He urged citizens to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, stressing the importance of community cooperation in sustaining the progress made so far.

The suspects, according to police, will be charged to court following the conclusion of investigations.

Soldier Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Murdering Keke Rider

A General Court Martial sitting at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, has sentenced Private Lukman Musa, a soldier serving with the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, to death by hanging for the brutal killing of a tricycle (keke) rider, Abdulrahman Isa, in Azere town, Bauchi State.

The court, presided over by Brigadier General Liafis Bello, found Musa guilty on multiple counts, including murder, culpable homicide, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

The verdict was delivered on Thursday, September 18, 2025.

According to details presented during the trial, Private Musa conspired with an accomplice known only as Oba to lure the unsuspecting victim, Isa, into his home under the pretense of needing help moving personal items.

Once inside, Musa struck Isa on the head with a wooden object and then strangled him to death.

In a bid to hide his crime, the soldier stuffed Isa’s body into a sack and dumped it in a remote area between Shira and Yala villages. Musa later sold the victim’s tricycle.

Investigators also discovered that the soldier was in unlawful possession of 34 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, further compounding his charges.

While delivering the judgment, Brigadier General Bello condemned Musa’s actions in the strongest terms, calling them a disgrace to the military and a betrayal of the Army’s values.

“You mercilessly metamorphosed from a defender of citizens to a killer. Your action is an embarrassment and disgrace to the Nigerian Army,” Gen. Bello declared.

He added that Musa’s conduct was a “grave violation of military values” and completely contrary to the Army’s constitutional duty to protect citizens.

For the charge of culpable homicide, Musa was sentenced to death by hanging, as provided under Section 221 of the Penal Code, which punishes violations of Section 220.

On the second charge, involving the unlawful possession of firearms, contrary to Section 8(1) of the Firearms Act, Musa received an additional two-year prison sentence and was dismissed from the Nigerian Army with ignominy.

Major Aminu Mairuwa, Acting Deputy Director of Legal Services for the 3 Division, spoke to journalists after the ruling.

He emphasized that the judgment reaffirms the Army’s firm stance on discipline and legal accountability.

“This judgment signifies the Nigerian Army’s resolve to ensure that no personnel operates outside the law or laid down standard operating procedures,” Major Mairuwa stated.

He added that the ruling serves as a clear message that the Army will not tolerate lawlessness within its ranks.

Rivers: Gov. Fubara’s Whereabouts Unknown As Crowd Disperses In Disappointment

Thousands of Rivers State residents who had gathered around the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday left disappointed after Governor Siminalayi Fubara failed to appear, hours after the official end of emergency rule in the state.

The crowd, made up of supporters, party loyalists, and well-wishers, had converged early in the day in anticipation of the governor’s return to office, hoping to see him resume duty and address the public following six months of federal control.

But by 5:00 p.m., there was still no sign of Fubara, and the once-energetic atmosphere had faded into silence. Many in the crowd began to disperse, expressing uncertainty and concern over the governor’s absence.

No official statement has been issued by the state government to explain why Governor Fubara did not make a public appearance.

The expectation for Fubara’s appearance followed President Bola Tinubu’s announcement on Wednesday that the state of emergency, imposed in March 2025, had been lifted.

The president cited improved political stability and a renewed commitment to democratic governance by stakeholders across Rivers State.

“There is a new spirit of understanding, a robust readiness, and potent enthusiasm among all stakeholders in Rivers State for an immediate return to democratic governance,” Tinubu said in a televised statement.

The transitional military administrator, retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, formally handed over power to the elected leadership in a quiet ceremony late Wednesday.

In his farewell address, Ibas urged political actors in the state to embrace mutual respect, reconciliation, and dialogue going forward.

While Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu is also expected to resume alongside Fubara, neither has made any public statement since the handover.

Supporters who gathered at the Government House carried banners and chanted songs of solidarity, hoping for a brief appearance or speech from the governor.

As hours passed without any communication from the state leadership, many began to leave, visibly disheartened.
