Putin Has ‘Let Me Down’, Says Trump As UK Visit Ends

U.S President Donald Trump wrapped up his historic second UK state visit on Thursday with a sharp rebuke of Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring that the Russian leader had “really let me down” over the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Trump made the remarks during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the Chequers country residence, following wide-ranging talks that covered international security, trade, and migration.

“I thought Ukraine would be the easiest conflict to end because of my relationship with President Putin,” Trump said.

“But he’s let me down. He’s really let me down.”

The U.S. president, who had previously claimed he could swiftly end the Ukraine war, now appears to be aligning more closely with European leaders like Starmer, who continue to push for stronger international pressure on Moscow.

During their meeting, Starmer positioned himself as a bridge between Washington and European allies, particularly on Ukraine.

The two leaders also signed a major tech deal focused on artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and nuclear energy.

Starmer described the partnership as an example of “leaders who genuinely like each other,” while Trump praised the UK’s “unbreakable bond” with the United States.

Their shared chemistry has reportedly eased trade tensions, with Trump stating that the May trade deal between the two countries was “the best” ever signed by the U.S.

However, policy differences were still evident. Trump disagreed with Starmer’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state, calling it “one of our few disagreements.”

He also claimed he could solve the UK’s illegal migration issue “even if it meant using the military,” a remark that drew raised eyebrows from some UK observers.

The visit combined diplomatic talks with royal ceremony.

On Wednesday, Trump was honored with a full state banquet at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles III, who called the visit “a chance to reaffirm peace efforts and support for Ukraine.”

Calling it “one of the highest honours of my life,” Trump responded warmly to the king’s tribute, referring to Charles as “a great gentleman and a great king.”

Trump’s wife, Melania, remained at Windsor on Thursday, where she joined Princess Catherine and Queen Camilla for cultural engagements, including a viewing of Queen Mary’s Doll’s House.

The British government rolled out traditional royal pageantry, including gun salutes, horseback soldiers and bagpipes, elements reportedly chosen to appeal to Trump’s admiration for monarchy and history.

Starmer also led Trump on a private tour of Winston Churchill memorabilia at Chequers, invoking the legacy of the wartime leader whom Trump has frequently cited as a personal hero.

While Trump kept a tight schedule away from the British public, protests against his visit filled the streets of London.

Around 5,000 demonstrators marched in central London on Wednesday, criticizing both his foreign policy and domestic record.

Meanwhile, Starmer faced his own political headache: he recently dismissed UK Ambassador to Washington Peter Mandelson over connections to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump has also faced renewed scrutiny over his ties to Epstein, with new revelations surfacing about their past relationship in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Despite the protests and lingering controversies, the visit delivered tangible outcomes. The UK secured an estimated £150 billion ($205 billion) in investment pledges from major U.S. companies including Microsoft, Google, and Blackstone.

The deepening of tech and defense ties, along with Trump’s increasingly critical stance on Putin, could mark a new phase in transatlantic relations.

For Starmer, whose political gamble in inviting Trump for a second state visit raised eyebrows, the results may offer vindication.

The U.S. president departed for Washington later Thursday, closing a visit that was equal parts diplomacy, drama, and royal spectacle.

Onitsha South LGA Drags Anambra Assembly To Court Over Land Dispute

The Onitsha South Local Government Council has taken legal action against the Anambra State House of Assembly, accusing it of overstepping its constitutional authority in a controversial land ownership matter.

In a lawsuit filed at the Onitsha High Court (Suit No. O/150/25), the Chairman of the Council, Chief Emeka Joseph Orji, is challenging the Assembly’s intervention in what he insists is a judicial matter.

The council is seeking the court’s determination on whether the Assembly, under Sections 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), has any legal basis to adjudicate on land ownership disputes.

“Let the defendants, Mr. Uchenna S. Uzoeto of No. 2D Sokoto Road, Onitsha, and Obi Nweke Eleglede, within 42 days of receiving this summons, enter appearance in this suit,” the court document states.

The council argues that the Assembly’s Committee on Public Petitions is attempting to act as a court in a matter that is already before multiple courts of competent jurisdiction and also under active police investigation.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Paul Onuachala, Secretary of Onitsha South Local Government Area, clarified that the land in question is currently the subject of several pending lawsuits, involving multiple parties, notably one Chief Sabest Uzoeto, and is also being probed by law enforcement at Zone 13, Ukpo.

“Despite this, the House of Assembly and its Committee on Public Petitions have inserted themselves into the dispute, which raises serious legal and constitutional concerns,” Onuachala said.

He added, “The Council believes that any further intervention by the Assembly could be considered sub judice, as the matter is actively before the courts.”

The Onitsha South Council firmly maintains that the disputed land rightfully belongs to the local government and notes that it has already begun utilizing the space for public good.

“We’ve reclaimed the property and have constructed the first-ever fire service station in the ancient city of Onitsha, a critical infrastructure project long overdue,” Onuachala stated.

He also blamed years of neglect of the local government system in Anambra State for allowing individuals to illegally encroach upon council-owned properties.

Calling for restraint, he urged all involved parties to allow the courts to resolve the matter.

“The Onitsha South Local Government calls on everyone to respect the rule of law and await the judicial determination of rightful ownership,” he concluded.

Anambra Gov’ship: LP Candidate Moghalu Denies Claims Of Obi Backing ADC’s John Nwosu

The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the upcoming Anambra State election, Chief George Moghalu, has firmly denied reports suggesting that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential flagbearer in 2023, is supporting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, John Nwosu, ahead of the November 8 gubernatorial poll.

Rumors of Obi’s alleged preference for Nwosu had sparked concerns within the Obidient Movement, especially after the former governor of Anambra State was seen at ADC campaign rallies for the State Assembly and Anambra South Senatorial District by-elections.

During those rallies, Obi endorsed the ADC candidates, justifying his support by explaining that INEC had disqualified all Labour Party candidates from participating in the said by-elections.

He urged the electorate to vote for the ADC, noting that the alliance was part of a broader coalition plan for the 2027 general elections.

Obi, however, also clarified that he remains a committed member of the Labour Party and would support its candidate in the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

In response to the growing speculation, Chief George Moghalu described the reports as completely false and misleading.

“There is no confusion about where our leader, Mr Peter Obi stands in this election. He has said it many times that he is fully involved in the November 8 governorship election as a member of Labour Party and has also said he will work for me.

“Mr Peter Obi has publicly stated that he has confidence in my capability as a candidate, and that he is sure I will perform. He is working for me and there is no doubt about that.

“Also, the entire Obidient family worldwide has made a press release, asking all members to support me and those who cannot come to Anambra to support with their votes should pray for me.”

On a different note, Moghalu weighed in on the recent controversy involving Governor Chukwuma Soludo, his wife, APC candidate Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and Senator Uche Ekwunife, who is Ukachukwu’s running mate. The altercation reportedly included personal insults and accusations that have raised eyebrows across the state.

Moghalu criticized the tone of the exchanges, saying it undermines the dignity expected in public service and political leadership.

“Some people have been wanting me to speak about the vituperations that are coming out of Anambra State. I believe there are many things to be talked about and we should not belittle ourselves, or involve in many things and cast aspersions on people. At our level, we should be civil.

“We should be able to see things that are not working well in government and speak about them, or we should rather market ourselves.

“You are dealing with people, so tell them what you can do to make the society a better place instead of discussing things that are very embarrassing.

“Talking about sex and educational qualifications brings down the bar of governance. If you think the government has not done enough, then you should say how you will do it.”

Wife, Children Of Late Ondo SDP Gov’ship Candidate Akingboye Detained Over Suspicion Of Murder

In a shocking twist to the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, the Nigerian Police have arrested his wife and children over suspicions of their involvement in his alleged murder.

Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, passed away recently at his residence in Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos, at the age of 60.

His death was initially reported as a sudden, tragic loss, with tributes pouring in from across the country.

However, police sources have now confirmed that the case is being treated as a possible homicide.

Speaking to reporters, a senior police official revealed disturbing developments.

“The latest information suggests that he may have been murdered by his wife and children. CCTV footage from the residence showed him being dragged out of the building at 2 am,” the source disclosed.

All immediate family members living in the home, including his wife and children, were taken into custody on Wednesday and are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos.

However, one of Akingboye’s daughters is reportedly still at large.

Sources close to the investigation claim that domestic staff in the residence were aware of the incident, further fueling suspicions of a premeditated act.

Earlier, one account alleged that Akingboye was pushed off a balcony during a domestic dispute, though the police are yet to confirm this detail officially.

Images of his lifeless body, which have circulated online, reportedly show deep bruises and lacerations on his head and neck, sparking outrage and increasing calls for justice.

Akingboye was widely respected as a philanthropist, business magnate, and political figure.

He was the CEO of Benshore Maritime, CEO of Clog Oil Systems, President of WeAfrica Group, and held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland.

He also ran as the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the 2024 Ondo State gubernatorial election, where he contested against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa (APC) and Agboola Ajayi (PDP), among others.

In an earlier statement, his personal assistant and media adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, described him as:

“A man of unwavering integrity, an accomplished businessman, philanthropist, visionary leader, and community builder who lived a fulfilled and purposeful life.”

Following these developments, the police have assured the public of a thorough and discreet investigation, emphasizing that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth behind the prominent figure’s death.

Swedish Embassy Endorses Enugu Tech Festival 2026, Pledges Support For Cross-Border Innovation

The Swedish Embassy in Nigeria has formally thrown its weight behind the upcoming Enugu Tech Festival (ETF) 2026, an event set to become one of the largest technology and innovation gatherings in Africa.

The endorsement was made during a strategic meeting in Abuja between officials of the Swedish Embassy and the Enugu State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Lawrence Eze, alongside the ETF 2026 team.

Speaking to journalists in Enugu following the development, Dr. Eze described the meeting as “crucial and forward-thinking,” emphasizing that it focused on building cross-border partnerships, enhancing capacity for young innovators and positioning Enugu as a digital hub in Africa.

“Next year’s Enugu Tech Festival is expected to welcome over 50,000 participants. It’s going to be a major event, and we’re thrilled to have the Swedish Embassy’s involvement at this level,” said Dr. Eze.

He commended the leadership of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, attributing Enugu’s rapid rise in the tech space to the Governor’s visionary reforms and commitment to digital transformation.

“Governor Mbah’s administration has laid a solid foundation for innovation through smart governance, youth empowerment, and forward-thinking policies. It is this environment that has made initiatives like ETF possible,” Eze added.

Also speaking, ETF Team Lead, Mr. Eliezer Ajah, highlighted the significance of Sweden’s endorsement, particularly in relation to global partnerships and development funding.

“Enugu has one of the highest concentrations of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. That translates to a large, educated youth population, ideal for tech-driven capacity building. This is a strategic advantage we’re leveraging,” Ajah said.

He noted that there are opportunities to align with Swedish development finance institutions such as Swedfund to explore collaborative projects within the South-East tech ecosystem.

“ETF 2026 can serve as a launchpad for identifying and unlocking low-hanging fruits in tech innovation, especially when international stakeholders are part of the conversation. This is a value-for-value relationship we’re keen to build,” he added.

The Swedish Embassy is also expected to facilitate the participation of foreign experts and speakers, who will share global insights and experiences during the festival.

ETF 2026, also referred to as ETF 2.0, will run from February 24 to 27, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu. Themed “Coal to Code: Energy in New Form,” the event aims to bridge the gap between traditional industries and digital innovation.

The festival will feature Keynote addresses by global tech leaders, Innovation exhibitions and product showcases, High-level policy and partnership forums as well as Startup pitching and investment matchmaking.

ETF 2026 is envisioned as more than a regional event, it’s a continental platform for ideas, investment, and collaboration that will shape Africa’s digital future.

The Enugu State Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a world-class digital ecosystem that empowers young people, attracts global investors and redefines Africa’s technology and innovation landscape.

‘We’ve Had Enough’, Mass Protests Sweep France Over Macron’s Austerity Policies

Demonstrators march with flares in Lyon, central-eastern France, on September 18, 2025, during a day of nationwide strikes and protests called by unions over France's national budget. France is bracing for a day of nationwide protests on September 18, 2025, with a source close to the authorities saying some 800,000 people are expected to take to the streets. Thousands of protesters across France took to the streets on Thursday in a massive show of resistance against President Emmanuel Macron’s austerity measures, triggering nationwide strikes and disrupting transport, schools, and essential services.

Public transport was brought to a standstill in many areas, schools were shuttered, and tens of thousands demonstrated in major cities including Paris, Lyon and Marseille.

Sporadic clashes broke out between protesters and police, with tear gas deployed in several cities to disperse crowds.

This wave of unrest follows public outrage over the government’s proposed €44 billion cost-cutting budget, introduced by former Prime Minister François Bayrou.

Although the new Prime Minister, Sébastien Lecornu, Macron’s seventh in office, has promised a new direction, his appointment has done little to ease tensions.

“We’re tired of watching the rich get richer while we struggle to survive,” said Bruno Cavalier, 64, protesting in Lyon with a sign reading “Smile, you are being taxed.”

The demonstrations were sparked by budget proposals that include eliminating two public holidays and curbing perks for former prime ministers.

Despite promises to abandon some of these plans, discontent remains high.

More than 80,000 security personnel, including police and gendarmes, were deployed across the country.

Armoured vehicles, drones, and water cannons were also on standby.

The Interior Ministry estimated that between 600,000 and 900,000 people would join the protests nationwide.

By midday Thursday, over 76,000 people had already taken part.

The strikes saw major turnout from various sectors. Around one in six teachers walked off the job, and nine out of ten pharmacies closed their doors.

Paris commuters faced major disruptions, with only three automated metro lines running as usual.

Unions hailed the turnout as a success. “We’ve recorded 260 demonstrations nationwide and thousands of strikes across sectors,” said Sophie Binet, head of the CGT union.

Violent incidents were reported in cities like Lyon and Marseille.

A journalist and a police officer were injured during clashes in Lyon, while in Marseille, video footage showed a police officer kicking a protester on the ground.

Protesters also blocked bus depots in Lille and several secondary schools in Paris. About 300 students gathered at Maurice Ravel Secondary School in the capital’s east, waving signs that read, “Block your school against austerity.”

The protests come at a time when President Macron’s popularity is at an all-time low, with just 18 months left in his term. Critics blame him for fuelling unrest.

“The president is the source of this chaos,” said left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon at a rally in Marseille.

Authorities fear further violence. Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez warned that radical groups might infiltrate peaceful protests and advised central Paris shops to stay closed during the demonstrations.

While a smaller day of protest held earlier this month had limited impact, Thursday’s action marks the largest mobilisation since last year’s uproar over Macron’s controversial pension reforms, which were passed without a parliamentary vote.

Disappointment In Rivers As Fubara Fails To Appear At Government House

Thousands of eager supporters gathered at the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday morning, hoping to welcome Governor Siminalayi Fubara back to office after a six-month emergency rule.

But after hours of waiting, they left disappointed.

Supporters had arrived as early as 6 a.m. from across the statestate, including rural areas, in anticipation of Fubara’s return following President Bola Tinubu’s formal declaration ending the state of emergency in Rivers.

By midday, between 12 pm and 1 pm, the crowd began to disperse as there was still no sign of the governor.

Some visibly frustrated supporters, including former local government chairmen loyal to Fubara, were seen making frantic phone calls trying to locate the governor.

Among those present were former Obio/Akpor chairman, Chijioke Ihunwo, and Port Harcourt City’s former chairman, Ezebunwo Itche-Mati.

These sacked LG bosses had brought along their followers in a show of support.

Notably absent were supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and political rival of Fubara.

Newly elected LG chairmen allied with Wike were also nowhere to be seen at the Government House.

Some disappointed attendees voiced their frustration.

“We are going because we are hungry. Maybe when the governor comes, we will return,” one supporter said.

The gathering came on the heels of the official end of the emergency rule imposed earlier this year.

The emergency was declared by President Tinubu in March due to the escalating political conflict between Governor Fubara and the state House of Assembly, which is dominated by loyalists of Minister Wike.

During the emergency period, political structures were suspended and a caretaker administrator, Ibas, was appointed to stabilize the state.

With the emergency rule lifted, the expectation was high for a symbolic return of Governor Fubara.

Ohanaeze Urges FG To Release Nnamdi Kanu For Medical Treatment

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to enable him to access proper medical care.

In a video message sent to The PUNCH on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata also encouraged Igbos across the country to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise and ensure they obtain their permanent voter cards.

Nnamdi Kanu, one of Nigeria’s most controversial separatist figures, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his rearrest in June 2021.

His detention followed a covert operation by Nigerian authorities in Kenya.

He had earlier fled the country in 2017 while on bail after being arrested in 2015 on charges related to treason.

Azuta-Mbata emphasized the need for a political approach to Kanu’s case rather than prolonged detention, which, according to him, benefits the government in no meaningful way.

“I urge every Igbo person across Nigeria to immediately take part in the ongoing voter registration and get their PVCs,” the Ohanaeze leader said.

“Secondly, I call on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu without delay. The continued detention of Kanu offers no real advantage to the government. His safety, welfare, and access to medical treatment must be guaranteed.”

“This issue requires a political solution. The government must act in a way that promotes healing and national unity, rather than deepening divisions,” he added.

You Lack Power To Sack Or Reinstate Governors, ADC Carpets Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stern rebuke to President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of overstepping his constitutional authority by suspending and reinstating elected officials in Rivers State.

In a statement on Thursday, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, criticized the President’s recent move, declaring that the Nigerian Constitution does not grant the President the power to hire or fire state governors or lawmakers.

The backlash follows Tinubu’s announcement on Wednesday lifting the six-month state of emergency declared in Rivers State in March 2025.

With the declaration, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, were directed to resume duties immediately.

“It gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State shall end with effect from midnight today,” Tinubu said.

But the ADC condemned the development, describing it as a violation of democratic principles and a dangerous precedent.

“The President’s decision to suspend and then recall elected officials is whimsically autocratic. It undermines the Constitution and democratic order,” the ADC said.

The party argued that the events in Rivers State over the past six months amounted to political manipulation, not genuine governance, adding that Tinubu’s actions masked personal or political interests behind a façade of national leadership.

The ADC accused the President of behaving as though governors were federal appointees, rather than officials elected by their people.

“Governors and lawmakers do not draw legitimacy from Aso Rock. Only a competent court can remove or restrain them, not a presidential proclamation or press release,” the party added.

The statement further called attention to what it described as the erosion of state autonomy and the emergence of an overcentralized power structure, warning that the Rivers situation could be used to intimidate other governors into submission.

“What happened in Rivers is not just about one state. It’s a message to all states that their loyalty must lie with Abuja, not with their constituents.”

The ADC also challenged Tinubu’s supposed concern for national security, mocking reports that he had ended his vacation due to rising insecurity.

“He didn’t return because Nigerians are being killed or suffering. He came back to personally oversee the return of Fubara and assert his authority,” the party alleged.

Calling on the Supreme Court and the broader judiciary to intervene, the ADC urged the courts to clearly define constitutional limits and stop executive overreach.

“Section 305 of the Constitution was not meant for settling political scores. It was created for true emergencies, disasters, insurrections, not political expediency,” it said.

“Unless the judiciary speaks up, future presidents may feel emboldened to interfere directly in state governance, eroding Nigeria’s federal structure and democratic stability.”
