JUST IN: Tension In Benue As Governor’s Aide, Activist Goes Missing

Concerns are mounting in Benue State following the disappearance of two individuals, including a top aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia.

One of the missing persons is Atu Terver, the Principal Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Media Mobilisation.

He was last seen on Tuesday, reportedly travelling from Makurdi to Abuja but never arrived at his destination.

The second individual, Asom Jerry, a well-known social media activist, has also been declared missing.

His disappearance has sparked intense speculation online, with some alleging he was arrested by security operatives, though no official confirmation has been given.

Speaking with Punch on Thursday, Terver’s wife, Mrs. Civir Terver, confirmed her husband had set out for Abuja to visit his family but lost contact along the way.

“He left Makurdi on Tuesday and was coming to see us in Abuja but didn’t show up. The case was reported to the police here, and they said they are investigating. As of today, there’s still no information on his whereabouts,” she said.

When asked if she had been contacted by the state government, she responded that there had been no communication from her husband’s employer.

The Benue State Police Command stated it had no information on the alleged arrest of Jerry.

Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, explained that Terver’s case was under the jurisdiction of the FCT Command, as the incident reportedly occurred outside Benue.

“I’m just hearing about the activist’s arrest from you. As for the governor’s aide, the matter happened in Abuja, not in Benue State,” Edet said.

Attempts to reach the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kula Terso, were unsuccessful, as calls went unanswered.

Meanwhile, the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Austin Agada, expressed alarm over the disappearances. In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, the party criticised Governor Alia’s administration for remaining silent.

“The sudden disappearance of prominent Benue citizens, activist and critic Asom Jerry, and the governor’s aide Atu Terver (popularly known as Krazy T) has sparked fear and uncertainty.”

“These events undermine public trust in government and security agencies,” the statement read.

The APC faction condemned what it described as the governor’s “insensitivity and inaction,” urging security agencies to intensify efforts to locate the missing men and ensure those behind the incidents are held accountable.

The party also called on the state government to break its silence, reassure the public and show commitment to protecting the lives and rights of citizens.

Police Uncover Human Flesh, Abandoned Car During Stop-and-Search, Suspect In Custody

The Oyo State Police Command has reaffirmed the importance of its ongoing “Stop-and-Search” operations along highways, intersections and adjoining roads, saying they are essential in curbing crime and protecting lives.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Command said one such routine search yielded shocking discoveries at the Toll Gate axis of the Ibadan‑Expressway at around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

A white bus with registration number XA 551 IRG was intercepted by a Federal Highway Patrol team.

Inside, one occupant, identified as Alfa Basiru, was found with a substance suspected to be human flesh.

The suspect told police he bought the flesh in Lagos.

He is now in custody at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, where the item is undergoing forensic analysis to determine its authenticity and source.

In a separate incident, officers flagged down a Toyota Camry (registration LSD 957 JX).

The driver fled on sight, abandoning the vehicle. The car has since been impounded.

The police are asking anyone with legitimate claim to produce verified documents and contact the Command via +234 808 176 8614.

The Command stressed that these searches are not mere public relations gestures, but serious efforts to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents and travelers across Oyo State.

While expressing gratitude to the public for its cooperation, the police vowed that such operations will continue to ensure enhanced security in the state.

Amaewhule-Led Rivers Assembly Resumes Plenary After Six-Month Suspension

The Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened on Thursday following the expiration of the six-month state of emergency earlier imposed on the state by President Bola Tinubu.

The emergency rule, declared in March 2025 at the peak of a political crisis, led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state legislature.

However, President Tinubu on Wednesday lifted the emergency measures, directing the governor, his deputy, and lawmakers to resume official duties immediately.

Thursday’s plenary session was held at the Assembly Residential Complex along the Aba–Port Harcourt Expressway and presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule.

This marks the first legislative sitting since March 12, 2025, just days before the emergency rule was enforced.

While the assembly resumed legislative business, Governor Fubara was yet to return to the Government House as of press time.

Nonetheless, a large crowd of supporters gathered outside the seat of power in anticipation of his arrival.

Three Students Arraigned For Alleged Murder, Mutilation Of School Teacher

Three students of an Islamic school in Kano State have been arraigned before a Magistrate Court for the alleged murder of their teacher, whom they reportedly killed and mutilated.

The accused, Inuwa Muhammad, Abba Rabi’u, and Yahaya Rabi’u, were brought before the court on charges of criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of a weapon, and culpable homicide.

During the court proceedings, the prosecuting counsel, Barrister Maryam Halilu Dantiye, told the court that the students conspired to falsely accuse their teacher, identified as Malam Isyaku, of being a kidnapper.

The prosecution further alleged that the suspects lured the teacher into a nearby bush, where they attacked him with a locally-made gun.

After killing him, they reportedly removed one of his eyes and his genital organs.

The magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded in a correctional facility until October 14, when the case will continue.

Nigeria A “Typical Example Of Dying Democracy”, Says Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described Nigeria as a clear case of a democracy in decline, citing rising unaccountability and elite domination of the political space.

Obi made the statement on Wednesday while speaking at the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue held in Accra, Ghana.

The event, themed “What Makes Democracy Die?”, attracted leaders, scholars, and advocates of democratic governance from across Africa.

According to the former Anambra State governor, democracy begins to erode when it fails to serve the interests of the people.

“Democracy is fundamentally about accountability, about putting the people first, ensuring security, quality education, healthcare, and lifting citizens out of poverty,” Obi said.

“It begins to die when leaders stop being accountable and when the system no longer prioritises the needs of the people.”

Obi expressed concern that in Nigeria, the democratic process has been hijacked by elites who use public office primarily to access resources for personal or familial benefit, rather than for the public good.

He urged Nigerian citizens to be more deliberate in choosing leaders, stressing the importance of electing individuals who possess competence, character, capacity, compassion and a strong commitment to public service.

The former presidential candidate also took aim at the recently ended emergency rule in Rivers State, which was lifted on Wednesday by President Bola Tinubu.

He described the six-month intervention as a “constitutional misstep” and a setback to democratic practice.

“The disruption of democratic governance in Rivers State for six months was entirely avoidable. Its restoration, while welcome, remains a troubling chapter in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” Obi noted. “I hope key lessons were learned by all the actors involved.”

He emphasized that true leadership demands the courage to admit errors, learn from them and make necessary corrections to protect the integrity of the democratic system.

In a heartfelt statement released on Thursday, United Capital described the deceased as “integral members of the company’s family,” noting that their loss has left “an immeasurable void.”

“It is with profound grief that the Management and Staff of United Capital Plc announce the passing of six of our dear colleagues following the tragic fire incident at Afriland Towers on Tuesday, September 16, 2025,” the company said.

Shoprite Stores Shut In Ibadan, Ilorin; Shelves Nearly Empty In Lagos, Abuja

Shoprite Nigeria is facing severe operational challenges.

Outlets in Ibadan and Ilorin have been shut down, while many of its remaining stores in Lagos, Abuja and other cities show empty or near‑empty aisles.

Supply chain disruptions, inflation, foreign exchange volatility and high operating costs are key pressures pushing the retailer toward decline.

Officials say Shoprite moved from being wholly owned by a South African company to a franchise/management model under local investors several years ago.

At the Ikeja City Mall branch in Lagos, a staff administrator, Oluwatosin, explained:

“Actually, there is a new management, so they are trying to have a kind of meeting with all the stakeholders, the suppliers and vendors so that they can renegotiate their prices. Hopefully when that is completed, then they will start stocking the store again.”

On fears about expired goods during the supply shortages, she said:

“We would rather not sell at all than leave expired products on the shelves.”

Employees, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration and uncertainty:

“We don’t know what they are planning. Our chest is beating because we can’t afford to lose our jobs,” one said.

Some have said the issues have been dragging on for “two months” without sufficient resolution.
Management confirmed they’re auditing financials and aiming to restock by the end of September.

Shoprite entered Nigeria in 2005, soon expanding to multiple states and employing thousands of people.

Earlier store closures include the Kano branch in 2024. Ilorin and Ibadan are now closed, while Lagos and Abuja outlets are dealing with low stock.
