Osun 2026: Governor Adeleke Dismisses Defection Rumours To ADC

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has firmly denied recent reports suggesting he plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke described the claims as false and misleading, attributing them to political opponents seeking to create confusion and undermine his growing popularity in the state.

“Governor Adeleke remains a committed member of the PDP and has no intention of joining ADC or any other party,” the statement read.

According to Rasheed, the Governor’s current priority is not politics, but delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Osun, who entrusted him with their mandate three years ago.

“This rumour is a calculated attempt by those intimidated by the Governor’s rising public acceptance to distract the people and derail ongoing efforts,” Rasheed added.

The Governor and PDP leadership in Osun, the statement noted, are focused on strengthening party structures and mobilizing voters for the ongoing voter registration exercise, ahead of the 2026 polls.

“Governor Adeleke is fully focused on preparing the PDP for victory. His re-election bid will be under the PDP, with the strong support of the people of Osun,” Rasheed emphasized.

The statement also addressed the wave of unsolicited endorsements Adeleke has received in recent weeks, which it said has unsettled his critics.

“Those spreading fake reports are trying to capitalize on the Governor’s goodwill among Osun people. But the public should ignore these distractions.”

Governor Adeleke urged his supporters to disregard the defection rumours and stay focused on the task ahead.

“As a leader of the people, Governor Adeleke acknowledges the confidence Osun citizens have in both his leadership and the PDP. He will never act against their will,” the statement concluded.

Three Nigerian Pilgrims Freed in Saudi Arabia After Alleged Drug Trafficking Detention

Three Nigerian pilgrims who were detained in Saudi Arabia on allegations of drug trafficking have been released, following intervention by the Nigerian government and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the development during a press briefing on Wednesday, stating that the release followed high-level engagements between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

“The three Nigerians who were freed from detention after four weeks in custody include Mrs Maryam Hussain Abdullahi, Mrs Abdullahi Bahijja Aminu, and Mr Abdulhamid Saddieq,” Babafemi said.

He added that the pilgrims were victims of a drug trafficking syndicate that tampered with their luggage without their knowledge during departure from Nigeria.

The three pilgrims had travelled through Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on an Ethiopian Airlines flight headed to Jeddah via Addis Ababa on August 6, 2025.

Upon arrival, they were arrested by Saudi authorities after drugs were found in luggage tagged in their names.

Investigations later revealed that each pilgrim had only checked in one personal bag.

However, members of a criminal syndicate, in collaboration with staff of Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCOL), allegedly tagged an additional six bags, three of which contained narcotics, under the unsuspecting pilgrims’ names.

In response, the NDLEA arrested a suspected drug kingpin, Mohammed Abubakar, also known as Bello Karama, along with five alleged accomplices: Abdulbasit Adamu, Murtala Olalekan, Celestina Yayock, and Jazuli Kabir.

NDLEA said Karama travelled on a different flight (Egypt Air), while the drug-laden bags were checked in by his syndicate on Ethiopian Airlines.

Evidence, including financial transactions, linked the suspects to the smuggling operation.

NDLEA filed charges against the group and submitted its findings to Saudi authorities to prove the pilgrims’ innocence.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), held a series of meetings with officials of Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC), both in Nigeria and in Saudi Arabia, to advocate for the pilgrims’ release.

“Armed with the outcome of our investigation and evidence proving the pilgrims’ innocence, I personally engaged with my Saudi counterpart at different levels and locations,” Marwa said.

According to NDLEA, one of the detainees was released on September 14, while the other two were freed on September 15.

Marwa credited the success of the negotiations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he said prioritized the fair treatment of Nigerians abroad.

He also acknowledged support from Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN) and National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

NDLEA advised air passengers to personally verify all luggage tags before boarding, as a precaution against falling victim to similar schemes.

The incident has triggered renewed concerns about airport security, prompting authorities to tighten surveillance and baggage handling procedures at Kano Airport and other key departure points.

Iran Executes Man Convicted Of Spying For Israeli Intelligence

The Iranian government has executed a man identified as Babak Shahbazi after convicting him of spying for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, according to the country’s judiciary.

The execution was carried out by hanging on Wednesday morning following what officials described as due legal process and confirmation of the sentence by Iran’s Supreme Court, state-affiliated Mizan Online reported.

While the exact date of Shahbazi’s arrest remains unclear, authorities said he was found guilty of the capital offences of “corruption on earth” and “waging war against God”, charges frequently used in Iran for serious crimes, including espionage.

According to the report, Shahbazi worked in the design and installation of industrial cooling systems for companies connected to Iran’s military, security, and telecommunications sectors.

His position allegedly granted him access to sensitive sites, which he then used to gather and share intelligence with Mossad in return for money and foreign residency.

The execution comes in the wake of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, especially following a June 2025 conflict between the two nations.

In response, Iranian authorities have vowed to act swiftly against anyone suspected of aiding Israel, which Tehran considers a hostile state.

Just last month, Roozbeh Vadi, an employee of a firm linked to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, was also executed after being convicted of leaking information about nuclear scientists and facilities to Israeli intelligence.

In late July, Iran’s intelligence ministry announced the arrest of 20 individuals allegedly working as operational or support agents for Mossad.

These arrests reportedly spanned Tehran and multiple provinces.

Iran remains one of the world’s most prolific users of the death penalty.

According to human rights groups, including Amnesty International, Iran ranks second only to China in the number of annual executions, many of which are linked to political or security-related charges.

Police Clear Pastor Paul Adefarasin Over Viral Video Featuring Gun-Like Object

The Lagos State Police Command has cleared Pastor Paul Adefarasin of any wrongdoing following an investigation into a viral video in which he was seen holding what appeared to be a firearm from his vehicle.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the object in question was not a gun, but rather a stun gun—a non-lethal, self-defense device. As such, authorities said there are no legal grounds to pursue the matter further.

“After a thorough investigation, including questioning and a cautionary statement from Pastor Adefarasin, it was confirmed that the object was a stun gun and not a lethal weapon,” the statement read.

The incident occurred on June 6, 2025, when a short video clip surfaced online showing Pastor Adefarasin rolling down his tinted car window, appearing to hold a gun-like object.

In the footage, the person recording can be heard nervously saying, “Boss, boss, sorry sir, sorry sir,” as the vehicle drove away.

The video quickly sparked debate on social media, with many speculating whether the object was a firearm and questioning the legality of its possession.

In response to the public uproar, Pastor Adefarasin promptly turned himself in to the Lagos Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, cooperating fully with investigators.

He also released a public statement addressing the situation:

“You might be aware of a video circulating on social media showing me in what some have misunderstood as brandishing a firearm. I want to assure you that it was certainly not a firearm, and at no point did I point such at anyone,” he clarified.

Following the investigation, the police confirmed that the device did not qualify as a deadly weapon and therefore does not constitute a criminal offense under current law.

“Consequent on our findings, the Lagos State Police Command has determined that there are no sufficient grounds to proceed with the matter. The case is hereby discontinued,” the statement concluded.

Supreme Court Dismisses Appeals As PDP, SDP Candidates Withdraw Cases Against Gov. Aiyedatiwa

The Supreme Court has dismissed multiple appeals challenging the election of Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, following the withdrawal of suits by opposition candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The PDP governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, officially withdrew his appeal against Aiyedatiwa’s election.

His legal counsel informed the court that the decision followed consultations with key members of the party.

Ajayi also issued a statement extending his best wishes to Governor Aiyedatiwa and reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Ondo State.

Similarly, the Supreme Court panel, led by Justice Inyang Okoro, dismissed appeals filed by Bamidele Akingboye of the SDP and Ogunfeyimi Kolawole of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The SDP’s counsel explained that their appeal was being withdrawn due to the death of the appellant, Akingboye. Lawyers representing the respondents did not object to the withdrawals.

These developments effectively end legal challenges by major opposition parties seeking to overturn Aiyedatiwa’s electoral victory.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared the winner of the November 16, 2024 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He secured 366,781 votes and won in all 18 local government areas of the state, defeating his closest rival, Ajayi of the PDP.

Aiyedatiwa’s victory had already been upheld by both the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

On June 4, 2025, the Ondo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, chaired by Justice Benson Ogubu, dismissed several petitions, including one from Ajayi, alleging electoral irregularities.

Petitions from the SDP, African Democratic Congress (ADC), APM, and African Alliance (AA) were also struck out, affirming Aiyedatiwa’s win.

Prior to that, on March 11, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a separate suit filed by Ajayi challenging the validity of Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy.

The court ruled that Ajayi lacked the legal standing to intervene in APC’s internal affairs, noting that he was not a member of the party and had filed the case out of time.

Over 1 Million Candidates Score Five Credits As NECO Releases 2025 Results

Over 1.14 million candidates who sat for the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO), secured five credits and above, according to the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Danteni Ibrahim Wushishi.

Speaking at a press briefing at NECO headquarters in Minna on Wednesday, Prof. Wushishi disclosed that 1,144,496 candidates, representing 84.26% of the total examinees, obtained five credits and above, with or without English and Mathematics.

Of this number, 818,492 candidates (or 60.26%) earned five credits including Mathematics and English, meeting the minimum requirement for tertiary education in Nigeria.

Wushishi also raised concerns about examination malpractice, revealing that 38 schools across 30 states were implicated in widespread cheating.

He said these schools would be summoned for discussions, after which appropriate sanctions would be applied.

In addition, nine supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to various offenses including aiding and abetting malpractice, lateness, poor supervision, assault, insubordination, and unruly behavior.

The indicted supervisors include:

  • 3 from Rivers State
  • 1 from Niger State
  • 3 from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
  • 1 from Kano State
  • 1 from Osun State

Wushishi further noted that a communal clash in Adamawa State disrupted the SSCE in eight schools between July 7 and July 25, 2025, affecting 599 students, 13 subjects and 29 papers.

“NECO is currently in discussions with the Adamawa State Government to reconduct the affected exams. Until that is done, the results for these eight schools will not be released,” he said.

Highlighting NECO’s commitment to efficiency and credibility, Wushishi stated that the 2025 SSCE results were released just 54 days after the final paper in August.

He commended the Council’s staff for their discipline, professionalism, and intellectual rigor, which he said ensured the integrity of the examination process.

Sowore Files Counter‑Suit As DSS Drags Him, X, Meta To Court Over Post Calling Tinubu A Criminal

Omoyele Sowore, the pro‑democracy activist and former presidential candidate, has filed two fundamental rights actions at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suits are aimed at preventing Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) from removing his posts referring to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a criminal.

His attorney, Tope Temokun, initiated the cases yesterday in response to legal action taken by the Department of State Services (DSS) on the same day.

The DSS lawsuit, filed on 16 September 2025, charges Sowore and the social media platforms (Meta and X) in a five‑count complaint for refusing to delete certain posts about the President.

The charges were brought by the Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, M.B. Abubakar, together with four other DSS legal counsels.

In the fundamental rights actions, Sowore argues that the DSS is enforcing unconstitutional censorship through demands for deletion of his posts.

He claims this threatens free speech in Nigeria and endangers the rights of all citizens.

The DSS complaint alleges the following:

  • In Count one, that Sowore, via his X account (@YeleSowore), posted on 25 August a message accusing President Tinubu of corruption (“…this criminal @officialPBAT…”) — an allegation the DSS says violates Section 24(2)(b) of the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2024.
  • In Count Two, that on 26 August, Sowore shared a similar message on his Facebook page, purportedly aimed at inciting lawlessness among those with dissenting views.
  • In Count Three, the charge asserts that Sowore used his X handle to publish “defamatory material” online, contrary to Section 375 of the Criminal Code.

Sowore has publicly decried the charges, posting:

“The State Security Service filed a five‑count charge against X Facebook and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have committed a set of ‘novel’ offences they invented”

He has vowed to appear when his case is called for trial, framing the dispute as a fundamental test of free speech and constitutional rights.

Atiku Meets U.S Envoy In Abuja

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar led a delegation to meet the United States Ambassador, Richard Mills Jr., in Abuja yesterday.

In a social media post, Atiku said their discussion centered on strengthening democracy, security, and shared prosperity between Nigeria and the U.S.

Speaking further, Atiku who is contesting for the presidency in 2027 under the ADC called tribalism “a malignant disease” that undermines progress.

He placed blame on the elite for exploiting ethnic divisions, encouraging people to reject candidates based on their tribe rather than competence.

“Your exclusive point of focus must necessarily bother on the competence of the person based on his antecedents, among his numerous qualities, rather than what ethnic group he hails from. Vote according to your conscience and never allow anyone to subject you to the perverted delusion that you must not vote for a particular candidate just because he is Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba.”

In response, the APC criticized Atiku’s remarks as irresponsible and said his comments were a disguised attempt to provoke unrest.

APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka accused Atiku of using hunger and insecurity as political ammunition, arguing that he and his party had failed to tackle those issues during their time in power.

APC also warned that Atiku, who often resides abroad, would not bear the consequences if his calls for “revolution” led to chaos, urging Nigerians to support President Tinubu’s administration for stability and continued reforms.
