Trump Files $15 Billion Suit Against New York Times

US President, Donald Trump, has declared plans to sue the New York Times for $15 billion (£11 billion), accusing the newspaper of defamation and libel.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!”

He criticized the Times for endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, describing the paper as a “mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.”

Trump revealed that the lawsuit would be filed in Florida, a Republican-leaning state. The BBC has contacted the New York Times for comment.

Trump has frequently voiced frustration with media outlets he perceives as left-leaning and hostile toward his presidency.

In another post, he highlighted the Times’ endorsement of Harris, pointing out that it was featured prominently on the front page, a move he called “heretofore UNHEARD OF!”

Trump also accused other media organizations, including ABC News and CBS News, of using “a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration” to smear him.

Notably, both ABC and CBS recently settled lawsuits with Trump for multimillion-dollar sums.

In addition, Trump is pursuing legal action against the Wall Street Journal over its coverage of the Epstein scandal.

This is not Trump’s first legal confrontation with the New York Times. In 2023, a federal judge dismissed a $100 million lawsuit Trump filed against the paper and his estranged niece Mary Trump.

That case, originating in 2021, alleged a conspiracy to obtain his tax records and was linked to a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into his finances.

Trump also lost a separate $475 million defamation suit against CNN in 2023, which accused the network of unfairly comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

2027: Obi, Rhodes-Vivour Begin Consultations, Meet Afenifere Faction In Lagos

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday paid a visit to a faction of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, at their office in Lagos.

Obi was joined by the Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.

They were received by factional leaders, including Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Supo Shonibare, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, and Chief Sola Ebiseni, among others.

In a statement co-signed by Oba Olaitan and Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, the group confirmed that the meeting involved extensive discussions on the state of the nation and Obi’s political plans for 2027.

Obi thanked Afenifere for their support during the 2023 election and reaffirmed his commitment to key issues such as restructuring, education, healthcare, rural development, and full employment.

“There were wide discussions ranging from Peter Obi’s candidacy in the 2027 presidential elections to the state of the nation, including harassment of opposition voices, threats to democracy, the economic crisis, and governance costs,” the statement said.

Afenifere’s leaders restated their support for equity, justice, and national prosperity.

They expressed appreciation for Obi’s alignment with their values and voiced concern over the shrinking democratic space in Nigeria.

The meeting wrapped up with both parties pledging further collaboration and continued engagement.

Afenifere, originally founded in the 1950s under the leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has long been a key voice in Yoruba and national politics, known for its progressive ideals and advocacy for federalism.

However, deep divisions have plagued the group in recent years. One faction, led by the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, backed Peter Obi during the 2023 elections.

The other, under Pa Reuben Fasoranti, supported President Bola Tinubu.

Tensions heightened after the election, with Adebanjo’s group insisting that Obi won, a claim Fasoranti dismissed as illegitimate.

By 2025, the rift had solidified, with both factions ruling out reconciliation.

President Tinubu Returns To Abuja After Vacation In France

President Bola Tinubu returned to Abuja on Tuesday evening following a portion of his annual leave spent in France.

His presidential jet landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 6:45 pm, where he was warmly welcomed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, and other top government officials.

Tinubu departed Nigeria on September 4, 2025, initially planning to divide his vacation between France and the United Kingdom.

However, he ultimately completed the leave solely in France.

While in Paris, the President held a private luncheon with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, reviewing key areas for strategic cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties for mutual prosperity and global stability.

This marks Tinubu’s seventh visit to Paris since taking office in May 2023, and his first since attending the BRICS summit in Brazil in July, and the TICAD9 conference in Japan in August.

Within the first nine months of 2025, President Tinubu has made 15 international trips to 11 different countries.

These visits have included a mix of high-profile summits, bilateral meetings, inaugurations, and official holidays.

His year began with a January 6 trip to Accra, Ghana, to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7.

Shortly after, from January 12 to 16, Tinubu was in the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit, where he engaged Gulf investors and officials on trade and energy partnerships.

In late January, he traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to participate in the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit.

February saw a visit to France before attending the 37th African Union Summit in Ethiopia, where he joined fellow African leaders in discussing regional security, climate resilience, and continental trade integration under the AfCFTA.

From April 2 to 21, Tinubu undertook a two-week working visit to France and the United Kingdom.

In mid-May, he traveled to Vatican City to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.

June and July featured a historic state visit to Saint Lucia, where Tinubu addressed CARICOM leaders, followed by his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In August, he attended the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan, where he promoted Nigeria’s investment opportunities and discussed maritime security and digital infrastructure with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

During this period, Tinubu made two visits to the UAE, stopping over in Dubai in August.

His September itinerary included working vacations to the UK and France, marking his third trip to Paris and second to London this year.

Akwa-Ibom Govt Declares Two Doctors Wanted For Abdicating Duty After 8 Years Of State-Funded Training

The Akwa Ibom State Government has officially declared two medical doctors wanted for abandoning their posts after benefiting from state-funded training for eight years.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Health, Ekem John, during a press briefing in Uyo.

The doctors in question, Uduakabasi Ita, a Consultant Radiologist, and Mfonobong Bassey, a Consultant Haematologist, were employed by the state Ministry of Health but reportedly left their duties without completing the mandatory service period required to repay the cost of their training.

Commissioner John emphasized that “Medical personnel trained by the state are required to serve a stipulated period to offset the cost of their education before seeking employment elsewhere. Failure to comply will result in sanctions.”

He further revealed that their salaries have been suspended and that the government will pursue them wherever they relocate, coordinating with the Medical and Dental Councils of those countries to ensure their licenses are halted.

John urged the doctors to report immediately to the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health, warning that once the Medical and Dental Council initiates action, the government will not be held responsible.

He also called on their families to encourage them to return to service without delay.

Looking ahead, the commissioner reaffirmed that all medical officers trained by the state must complete their obligated years of service before resigning.

He warned that those who refuse must refund the full cost of their training to the government.

John praised Governor Umo Eno for declaring a health sector emergency, stating that Akwa Ibom is committed to developing a top-tier healthcare system under the ARISE Agenda.

Chinese Language Now Part Of Nigeria’s Senior Secondary School Curriculum

Mandarin, the official Chinese language, has officially been added to the list of foreign languages taught in senior secondary schools across Nigeria.

This development follows the recent overhaul of the national curriculum by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).

The announcement was made by Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Secretary of Education for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during the inauguration of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja.

These Chinese Corners, educational and cultural centre, are sponsored by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation as part of their corporate social responsibility initiatives.

“Mandarin has the highest number of speakers globally and is becoming a major language in commerce, education, and tourism. Our decision to embrace Chinese education and culture is forward-thinking,” Dr. Hayyo said.

He emphasized that the FCT has taken the lead by introducing Chinese Corners in schools ahead of the national rollout.

With 14 now established, these centres aim to strengthen educational and cultural ties between Nigeria and China. Hayyo also noted that FCT teachers have benefited from training programs in China.

Speaking on behalf of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Hayyo thanked the Chinese government for its ongoing support and ended his remarks with a Chinese proverb:
“Hai nei cun zhiji, tianya ruo bi lin” – “A bosom friend brings distant lands near.”

Chinese Embassy Counsellor Yang Jianxing described the initiative as a symbol of growing China-Nigeria friendship.

He said the first Chinese Corner was established in 2013, and it has since become a “bridge” connecting the youth of both countries.

“This is not the end but a new beginning in cultural exchange,” Yang added.

Dr. Muhammed Ladan, Director of the FCT Secondary Education Board, noted that the Chinese Corners are more than cultural space, they offer resources for learning Mandarin and pathways to scholarships in China.

Additional centres are planned, supported by other Chinese firms operating in Nigeria. Just last week, the Chinese Embassy donated 15 sets of Mandarin language materials and cultural books to support the curriculum’s rollout.

The new curriculum, confirmed by NERDC in a circular dated September 8, 2025, will take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session. Alongside Mandarin, other international languages like French and Arabic remain optional.

People Leap From Building To Escape Fire In Lagos

Panic erupted on Broad Street, Lagos Island, Tuesday afternoon when smoke from a fire in the basement of a six-storey building forced a hurried evacuation.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reported that the blaze started in the inverter room located in the basement of Afriland Tower.

Deputy Controller General Ogabi Olajide said the emergency call came in at 1:38 PM, prompting fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations to quickly respond.

Thanks to their swift action, the fire was contained before it could spread beyond the smoke-filled floors.

“Evacuation is ongoing, and the situation is now under control,” Olajide confirmed in an official statement.

Videos from the scene showed terrified occupants jumping from the building, while onlookers rushed with ladders and foam to assist.

Some trapped workers broke windows to breathe fresh air, while people below extended their hands, trying to catch those fleeing.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes with screams ringing out as thick smoke rapidly filled the upper floors of the building.

Photos revealed large plumes of smoke billowing from windows, some of which had been forced open to let in air.

Many occupants were seen clinging to window ledges to escape the spreading smoke.

Though the fire was eventually brought under control, the smoke had already engulfed multiple floors of the tower.

Abia’s Only APC Lawmaker Dumps Party

The lone All Progressives Congress (APC) member in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Akaliro Kelechi Anderson, has officially dumped the party and declared his allegiance to the Labour Party (LP).

The lawmaker, who represents Umuahia North State Constituency, submitted his resignation letter to the APC Chairman of Umuahia North Local Government Area, citing persistent internal crises, factionalism, and a breakdown of leadership structures within the APC in Abia State.

“Since my inauguration, the APC in Abia has never extended an invitation to me, formal or informal, for any meeting or activity, thereby undermining my relevance and mandate,” he wrote in his letter.

Hon. Akaliro, who also chairs the Assembly’s Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary, was the only APC candidate to win a seat in the House during the 2023 general elections.

The lawmaker criticized the APC’s continued internal wrangling, especially the frequent suspensions and counter-suspensions among party members across wards and local councils, calling it “a sign of irreversible disunity.”

Following what he described as consultations with his constituents and political stakeholders, Hon. Akaliro announced his decision to join the Labour Party, aligning with the administration of Governor Alex Otti, whom he praised for visionary leadership and development-focused governance.

“Today, I’ve seen the light. His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, has shown that he came prepared. From education to infrastructure and social services, he’s delivering on all fronts,” Akaliro said while addressing the press.

He added that being in opposition had become difficult under Governor Otti’s administration because there was little left to criticise.

“Even when I think of something to oppose, I find that he’s already doing it. He has made my job as an opposition lawmaker incredibly hard, in a good way.”

With enthusiasm, Akaliro declared his new political identity:

“I’m officially declaring as Honourable Barrister Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, the man with excess grace, representing the good people of Umuahia North State Constituency as a proud member of the Labour Party.”

He also expressed optimism that his defection would strengthen the Labour Party’s influence in Abia State while further isolating the APC.

“My constituents are excited about this move. I believe Governor Otti is taking Abia to its rightful place, and I want to be part of that journey.”

Akaliro’s exit leaves the APC with no representation in the Abia State House of Assembly, marking a significant setback for the party’s political relevance in the state.

His defection is seen as another boost for Governor Otti’s growing political influence and the Labour Party’s increasing dominance in the region.

Enugu Council Chairman Debunks Arrest Rumours, Flags Off NYSC Lodge, Inspects Market Projects

Social media was flooded Tuesday with unverified claims that the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engr. Jude Asogwa, had been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

However, contrary to the speculation, Asogwa was actively on the ground, carrying out his official duties in Nsukka.

In a clear show of leadership and focus, the council chairman led the groundbreaking ceremony for a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Lodge, located at the LGA headquarters.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of Corps members serving in the area.

Engr. Asogwa also conducted inspection tours of major infrastructure projects currently underway, including the Nsukka International Market and the Aku Road Market, both initiated by the Enugu State Government in collaboration with the local council.

Speaking during the events, Asogwa reiterated that the projects align with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision to transform Enugu into a hub for commerce, investment, tourism, and high-quality living.

“The governor is committed to repositioning Enugu as a cosmopolitan state. These projects reflect that commitment and will bring long-term benefits to our people,” Asogwa stated.

He highlighted that the NYSC Lodge will help solve accommodation challenges for Corps members posted to Nsukka, thereby improving their safety and overall experience.

Governor Mbah had earlier, in August, flagged off the construction of the 5,000-shop Nsukka International Market, which aims to relocate traders displaced by the demolition of the Ogige Market and make way for the new Nsukka Transport Terminal.

The market forms a critical part of the administration’s plan to expand Enugu State’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.

Expressing satisfaction with the quality of work on-site, Asogwa encouraged the contractors to speed up construction efforts while maintaining the highest standards.

“Once completed, these markets will not only serve Nsukka but will catalyze economic growth across the entire Enugu North zone,” he said.

Tinubu’s Flyover Project In Benue A Presidential Gift To Governor Alia – Umahi

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the construction of a major flyover at the Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, Benue State, describing it as a personal gift to Governor Hyacinth Alia in recognition of his commitment to infrastructure development.

The flyover, estimated to cost between $950 million and $1 billion, is being financed by the China Exim Bank and forms part of a much larger 520-kilometre dual carriageway stretching from Makurdi to Ninth Mile in Enugu State.

Details of the project were shared in a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, and posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Benue State Government.

At the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday, Minister of Works David Umahi represented the president. Umahi praised Governor Alia for his interventions on federal roads, noting that the Makurdi-Ninth Mile road project is the most extensive in any state.

“Benue State alone accounts for 260km of this dual carriageway. That’s 520km in total. There’s no comparable section in any other state,” Umahi said.

“Your Excellency, you truly came in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are a blessed governor.”

Umahi further emphasized that the Wurukum flyover wasn’t originally part of the road project’s blueprint.

According to him, it was specially added at the request of President Tinubu.

“This flyover wasn’t in the original budget. The president instructed that it be included as a gift to Governor Alia,” Umahi stated.

“Benue people have every reason to be grateful, for both divine favour and the president’s love for the state.”

He also commended the governor’s efforts in rehabilitating and constructing roads within the state, calling it a sign of true leadership.

“Governance is demanding, but with God’s grace, you’ll be remembered for your legacy,” he added.

The flyover project is a key component of the second phase of the Makurdi–Ninth Mile Road dualisation, which is segmented into five sections and covers a total of 250.6 kilometres, in addition to a 15.8-kilometre Lafia Bypass, according to Adam Onundi, Project Manager and MD of Yolas Consultants Ltd.

Doctor, Who Abandoned Patient To Have Sex With A Nurse Will Not Face Sanction, Tribunal Rules

A UK-based doctor who abandoned a patient under general anaesthesia during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse will not face disciplinary sanctions, a medical tribunal has ruled.

Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist and father of three, was caught in a compromising position with a nursenurse, identified only as Nurse C, at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester.

The incident took place on September 16, 2023, in a disused operating theatre also used as a storage room.

According to a report by The Independent, Dr. Anjum had told colleagues he was taking a short bathroom break during surgery.

Instead, he left the patient under anaesthesia and went to the other theatre to engage in sexual activity.

The misconduct was reported by a shocked colleague who discovered them.

Following an internal investigation, Dr. Anjum was dismissed in February 2024.

Last week, Dr. Anjum appeared before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), where he expressed his desire to return to medical practice in the UK.

He had since relocated with his family to Pakistan, where he continued working as a doctor.

On Monday, the tribunal concluded that while his actions amounted to serious misconduct, they did not pose an ongoing risk to patients.

“Dr Anjum put his own interests before those of the patient and his colleagues,” said Tribunal Chairwoman Rebecca Miller.

“While the incident had the potential to distract him from giving full attention to the patient’s care, no actual harm was caused.”

Miller acknowledged that the public would likely view the incident with serious concern but emphasized that the scrutiny Dr. Anjum had already faced, combined with the public declaration of serious misconduct, was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession.

The tribunal ruled that Dr. Anjum’s fitness to practise is not impaired, citing a “very low” risk of repeat behaviour.

As a result, no sanctions were imposed. The hearing is scheduled to resume on Tuesday in Manchester to consider whether a formal warning should be added to his registration.

The case has stirred public debate in the UK medical community and online platforms, raising questions about professionalism, accountability, and patient safety within the healthcare system.

Although no harm was reported to the patient, critics argue that leaving a sedated patient mid-surgery for personal reasons, especially for a sexual encounter, should carry stricter consequences to deter future misconduct.
