Nigeria Customs Unveils Automated E-Clearance System To Ease Port Congestion

In a major push to decongest Nigerian ports and streamline cargo operations, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially launched an automated “Overtime E-Clearance System.”

The digital platform is designed to fast-track the clearance of overtime cargo, reduce corruption and eliminate the bottlenecks caused by physical paperwork and manual procedures.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, introduced the system during a formal unveiling at Apapa Port, Lagos, stating that the initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency and legal compliance across the sector.

“This system allows consignees to submit and monitor overtime cargo clearance requests online, eliminating the need for repeated physical visits,” Adeniyi said.

Key Features of the System:

End-to-end digital application process for overtime cargo clearance.

Real-time tracking of applications by stakeholders.

Builds on a policy that extended cargo dwell time from 30 to 120 days, giving importers more time before goods are classified as “overtime.”

Adeniyi encouraged stakeholders to participate in the pilot phase by testing the platform and providing feedback, emphasizing the importance of collaborative improvement ahead of a full nationwide rollout.

Despite the digital shift, the Customs chief warned against misuse of the system, referencing a 15-year-old cargo abandonment case still under investigation.

“Deliberately abandoning goods to avoid paying duties is a serious offense. The system is not a loophole, it will be monitored, and violators will face stiff penalties,” he cautioned.

As part of the implementation plan, customs will hold sensitisation workshops with terminal operators, shipping firms and logistics stakeholders throughout the week, while feedback and legal issues raised during the pilot phase will be addressed before full deployment.

Assistant Comptroller General Mohammed Babandede, who oversees Customs operations in Zone A, hailed the development as a milestone.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to transparency, automation, and improving the ease of doing business in Nigeria,” he said.

INEC Expresses Concern Over Poor Voter Registration Turnout In Enugu

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed disappointment over the extremely low turnout for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in Enugu State, recording just 1,801 fresh registrations within 15 days of the exercise.

According to the Head of Voter Education and Publicity at INEC Enugu, Chief Rex Achumie, the figures represent a sharp contrast to the average of 25,000 registrations typically recorded in other states over the same period.

“The turnout so far is discouraging. It is troubling to see such a small number of new voters, just 1,801 across the entire state, despite smooth operations and no technical setbacks,” Achumie said.

The 15-day count covers registrations conducted between August 25 and September 12, exclusively at INEC’s CVR centres across Enugu State. Among the 1,801 newly registered voters, 896 are male and 905 are female.

INEC began the online phase of the CVR on August 18, with physical registration starting nationwide on August 28. In Enugu, the process has reportedly faced no technical or logistical issues.

“We’ve had no problems with network connectivity, staffing, or equipment. The process has been seamless,” Achumie noted.

“Unfortunately, people are not showing up. Residents are arriving at wide intervals — it’s a trickle.”

He urged community leaders, civil society groups, political parties, and other stakeholders to intensify voter sensitisation efforts, particularly targeting young people who just turned 18, and eligible voters who have never registered before.

Achumie stressed the importance of the CVR in ensuring inclusive and representative elections, especially as the country prepares for future electoral cycles.

“Registering to vote is not just for political party members, it’s a civic responsibility for every Nigerian of voting age. The voter’s card is your voice during elections.”

He emphasized that the low numbers could impact voter turnout and representation in upcoming polls if not urgently addressed.

The CVR exercise in Enugu runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 4pm, at the INEC State Headquarters in Enugu and all 17 Local Government Area INEC offices across the state.

INEC is urging all eligible residents who have not yet registered to take advantage of the ongoing opportunity to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.

Gentle de Yahoo: Army Nabs Notorious IPOB Commander, Rescues Victims

Residents of Imo State erupted in celebration following the arrest of a notorious commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as “Gentle de Yahoo.”

Troops of the Nigerian Army, in a well-coordinated operation, stormed the suspect’s hideout in Aku-Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area, bringing an end to his reign of terror in the region.

Described by locals as a long-time menace, “Gentle de Yahoo” was allegedly behind numerous cases of kidnapping, extortion, and violent attacks in Okigwe and surrounding communities.

According to security sources, the operation was carried out by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, in collaboration with other military services and law enforcement agencies.

The raid yielded significant intelligence and materials, including:

One English pistol

120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition

25 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition

One cartridge

Six mobile phones

Military and police uniforms

A German flag

Additionally, a workshop used for dismantling stolen vehicles for illegal resale was uncovered, and 10 motorcycles found at the scene were destroyed.

“This arrest sends a strong message, no criminal, no matter how infamous, can evade justice forever,” a senior military official said. “The people of Imo can now breathe easier.”

Beyond Imo State, the Nigerian Army recorded major victories in several other regions during recent operations:

Adamawa State: Five kidnapped victims were rescued in Madagali Local Government Area and safely reunited with their families.

Katsina State: Soldiers rescued five victims in Kukasheka Ward, Malumfashi LGA. In a separate operation, two terrorists were neutralised, with one AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a motorcycle recovered.

Kogi State: Two kidnap victims were freed in Lokoja LGA.

Benue State: One violent extremist was killed, and a mobile phone and assorted charms were seized.

Additionally, 11 suspects involved in armed robbery, illegal arms dealing, and extremist activities were arrested across Benue, Kogi, and Kaduna States.

In Plateau State, troops recovered 40 rustled cattle, which were returned to their rightful owners.

Military authorities praised the dedication of the troops and assured Nigerians that operations to eliminate threats to national security would continue.

“These achievements are a testament to our renewed commitment to protect lives and property across Nigeria,” said a top-ranking Army officer.

“We will not rest until peace and security are fully restored in all parts of the country.”

2027: Situation Room Urges Quick Passage Of Electoral Reforms

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room has called on the National Assembly to urgently complete and pass all pending electoral reform bills to strengthen public trust in the democratic process.

The appeal was made during a press conference in Abuja on Monday by Celestine Odo, Head of Programmes at ActionAid Nigeria, speaking on behalf of the coalition.

Odo warned that Nigeria’s democracy is at a critical crossroads, under threat from a growing governance deficit and widespread public disillusionment.

“The Situation Room calls on the National Assembly to finalise and pass into law pending reforms that will restore confidence in our elections and, ultimately, our democracy,” Odo stated.

In addition to legislative reforms, the group also challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in 2027, particularly in upcoming off-cycle gubernatorial polls in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states.

The Situation Room expressed concern over systemic corruption and urged the federal government to confront the issue head-on.

“While the endurance of civil rule is commendable, systemic corruption, cultural fragmentation, and governance failures continue to undermine democratic consolidation,” Odo added.

He noted that the success of the current administration’s legacy would depend on its ability to reduce economic inequality, restore electoral integrity, and promote inclusive governance.

The group also criticized the Senate’s suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as a threat to the rule of law.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, a first-time senator from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was suspended on March 6, 2025, and barred from all parliamentary activities for six months.

Although the matter was taken to court, the Federal High Court in Abuja did not overturn the Senate’s decision, citing the absence of a binding order to reverse it.

Despite informing the Senate Clerk’s office of her intention to resume duties on September 4, the senator has yet to be allowed back.

The Situation Room condemned the Senate’s continued denial of her return, warning it undermines constitutional democracy and sets a dangerous precedent.

JUST IN: DSS Files Criminal Charges Against Sowore Over Posts Calling Tinubu A Criminal

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count criminal charge against Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, over alleged false and inciting social media posts targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The charges were filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja by a Director of Public Prosecutions from the Federal Ministry of Justice, Muhammed Abubakar, alongside other legal representatives of the DSS.

Sowore had earlier been issued a one-week ultimatum by the DSS on September 8, demanding he delete a controversial post the agency described as “false, malicious, and inciting.”

The post in question accused President Tinubu of falsely claiming in Brazil that corruption had been eradicated in Nigeria.

Despite the ultimatum, the post remained on Sowore’s accounts after the deadline expired.

Notably, X Corp (formerly Twitter) and Meta Inc. (Facebook’s parent company) were also named as co-defendants in the case for allegedly failing to act on requests to remove Sowore’s accounts.

According to the court filings, Sowore is accused of using his social media platforms X (@YeleSowore) and Facebook (Omoyele Sowore), to publish a message stating:

“THIS CRIMINAL @OFFICIALPBAT ACTUALLY WENT TO BRAZIL TO STATE THAT THERE IS NO MORE CORRUPTION UNDER HIS REGIME IN NIGERIA. WHAT AUDACITY TO LIE SHAMELESSLY !”

The charges claim Sowore knowingly disseminated false information with the intention of inciting public disorder, defaming the President, and causing fear among Nigerians.

The five charges include:

  1. Publishing False Information via X, with intent to cause a breakdown of law and order — in violation of Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
  2. A similar offense committed on Facebook, using identical wording and intention, also under Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes Act.
  3. Defamation through X, in breach of Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act.
  4. Defamation through Facebook, also under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act.
  5. Publication of false information intended to incite fear and public disturbance, in contravention of Section 59 of the Criminal Code Act.

Omoyele Sowore is a known activist and journalist, widely recognized for his critical stance against successive Nigerian governments.

His involvement in organizing the #RevolutionNow protests in the past has drawn repeated scrutiny from security agencies.

The involvement of social media companies in the case highlights an increasing trend in Nigeria’s regulatory approach toward digital platforms and online speech.

Both X and Meta were accused of non-compliance after allegedly failing to remove Sowore’s accounts or the offending posts.

As at the time of filing this report, Sowore is yet to delete the posts.

In Support Of Enugu’s Food Security, Nkanu West Chairman Distributes Farm Equipment, Vows To Advance Gov. Mbah’s Agricultural Vision

In a significant step towards boosting agricultural productivity in Enugu State, the Executive Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Ogbodo, on Monday, led the distribution of modern farm equipment to local farmers at the Council Secretariat.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that the initiative is a continuation of the agricultural empowerment programme launched last month at Okpara Square by the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, aimed at transforming the state into a hub of agribusiness and food sufficiency.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Hon. Ogbodo expressed deep appreciation to Governor Mbah for placing agriculture at the heart of his administration’s economic recovery plan.

He noted that the Governor’s forward-thinking policies were already yielding tangible benefits at the grassroots level.

“What we are witnessing today is a direct impact of Governor Mbah’s commitment to reviving agriculture in Enugu State. By equipping our farmers with the necessary tools, we are not only ensuring food security but also empowering our people economically,” Ogbodo said.

The Council Chairman urged the beneficiaries to use the equipment judiciously and warned against diverting or selling the items.

He emphasized that the success of the Governor’s agricultural roadmap depends largely on the willingness of farmers to embrace innovation and productivity.

“This is not just about giving out tools, it’s about planting the seeds of self-reliance and sustainability. Let us make the Governor proud by putting these resources to the best use,” he added.

The distribution saw hundreds of farmers receive various agricultural tools and machinery, including motorized sprayers, seeders, hoes, irrigation kits and fertilizers.

Many of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, noting that it would greatly reduce the burden of manual labor and improve their yields.

Governor Mbah’s agricultural vision focuses on transforming Enugu State from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based one, with agriculture and agribusiness at the core.

Through partnerships, technology integration, and strategic investments, the administration aims to make the state a net exporter of food and agricultural products.

Suit Challenging David Mark-Led ADC Stalled

The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the hearing of a suit challenging the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola, due to improper service of court documents on some of the defendants.

At the resumed session on Monday, Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that the plaintiff had not fulfilled the legal requirements for proper service and directed that all defendants be personally served.

The case was adjourned to September 30 for hearing.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CD/1819/2025, was filed by Nafiu Gombe, a former Deputy National Chairman of the ADC.

He is challenging the legitimacy of Senator David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary of the party.

The defendants listed in the suit include African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Chief Ralph Nwosu.

In an ex parte motion filed on September 2, Gombe sought the temporary injunctions restraining INEC from recognising Mark and Aregbesola as national officers of the ADC pending the hearing of the main suit, preventing Mark and Aregbesola from parading themselves as National Chairman and Secretary, as well as prohibiting INEC from interacting or dealing with them in their claimed capacities until the case is resolved.

Despite the ongoing legal challenge, INEC has already recognised Mark and Aregbesola as the legitimate leaders of the party.

At Monday’s proceedings, legal representation was present for INEC and ADC, but Mark, Aregbesola and Nwosu were absent and unrepresented, despite previous court orders summoning them to show cause.

Shaibu Aruwa (SAN), representing ADC, filed a preliminary objection arguing that the court lacked jurisdiction, as the dispute concerns the internal affairs of a political party.

He also described the suit as an abuse of court process, filed in bad faith.

Aruwa challenged the method of service used on the absent defendants, stating that unless the court had ordered joint service, individual service was required.

Justice Nwite agreed, ruling that court permission must be sought before serving multiple parties through a single channel.

He ordered the plaintiff’s lawyer, Michael Agber, to properly serve all outstanding defendants personally.

Agber had earlier told the court that all parties had been served, with Mark, Aregbesola, and Nwosu receiving documents via the ADC headquarters.

However, Aruwa argued this was not legally sufficient.

Meanwhile, INEC’s lawyer, Kingsley Magbuin, confirmed that the commission had received the originating processes but was yet to be served with the motion on notice.

Agber proceeded to serve him in open court as directed by the judge.

On September 4, the court had refused to grant an interim injunction against the Mark-led leadership, instead ordering that all defendants be put on notice to respond.

Both ADC and INEC have now filed their responses and affidavits to show cause.

The matter will now proceed on September 30, when the court is expected to determine whether the suit can move forward.

Israel Bombards Gaza City As UN Probe Accuses It Of ‘Genocide’

Israel unleashed a massive new bombing campaign on Gaza City on Tuesday after visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio backed the ally’s goal of eradicating Hamas and warned that only days may be left for a diplomatic solution.

A United Nations probe, meanwhile, charged Israel with committing “genocide” in Gaza in a bid to “destroy the Palestinians”.

It accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials of incitement.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said early Tuesday that Gaza City, the territory’s main urban hub, was “on fire”.

“The IDF (Israeli military) is striking terrorist infrastructure with an iron fist, and IDF soldiers are fighting bravely to create the necessary conditions for the release of the hostages and the defeat of Hamas,” he said.

“We will not relent and we will not back down until the mission is accomplished,” Katz said.

This picture taken from a position at Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip shows smoke billowing amid Israeli bombardment of the besieged Palestinian territory on September 16, 2025.

It was unclear whether the previously declared ground assault on Gaza City had been launched.

Witnesses told AFP of relentless bombing of Gaza City, much of which is already in ruins after nearly two years of Israeli strikes since the Hamas attacks of October 2023 that triggered the war.

“We can hear their screams,” said 25-year-old resident Ahmed Ghazal.

Rubio offered robust backing for the offensive on Monday as he met Netanyahu, who has ordered the Israeli military to seize Gaza City.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks to the press as he departs Tel Aviv for Qatar following an official visit, at Ben Gurion International Airport, near Lod, Israel, September 16, 2025.

Rubio told reporters as he left Israel: “We think we have a very short window of time in which a deal can happen. We don’t have months anymore, and we probably have days and maybe a few weeks to go.”

Rubio said a diplomatic solution in which Hamas demilitarises remained the US preference, although he added: “Sometimes when you’re dealing with a group of savages like Hamas, that’s not possible, but we hope it can happen.”

Rubio, who met Monday in Jerusalem with families of hostages in Gaza, acknowledged that Hamas had leverage by holding them.

“If there were no hostages and no civilians in the way, this war would have ended a year and a half ago,” he said at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport.

A group representing hostages’ families said they were “terrified” for their loved ones after Netanyahu ordered the strikes.

“He is doing everything to ensure there is no deal and not to bring them back,” they said in a statement.

Chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem and Israel, South African judge Navi Pillay, speaks during a press conference in Geneva on September 16, 2025.

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI), which does not speak for the world body and has faced harsh Israeli criticism, found that “genocide is occurring in Gaza and is continuing to occur”, commission chief Navi Pillay told AFP.

“The responsibility lies with the State of Israel.” The investigators said explicit statements by Israeli civilian and military authorities along with the pattern of Israeli forces’ conduct “indicated that the genocidal acts were committed with intent to destroy… Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as a group”.

The report concluded that Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog and former defence minister Yoav Gallant have “incited the commission of genocide”.

Israel said it “categorically rejects this distorted and false report” and called for the “immediate abolition” of the COI.

Before flying to Qatar, Rubio said he hoped the US ally would keep up its Gaza mediation efforts, despite Israel carrying out air strikes against Hamas leaders gathered in the Gulf emirate last week to consider a US truce proposal.

“We want them to know that if there’s any country in the world that could help end this through a negotiation, it’s Qatar,” Rubio said.

Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the Gaza civil defence agency, told AFP that as of early Tuesday heavy bombing was ongoing in Gaza City, adding that the military also targeted the southern city of Khan Yunis.

The agency said at least 17 people had been killed on Tuesday, noting that “the number of deaths and injuries continues to rise”.

Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the details provided by the civil defence agency or the Israeli military.

Rubio’s visit came a week before France will lead a UN summit in which a number of Western governments, angered by what they see as Israeli intransigence, plan to recognise a Palestinian state.

Rubio called statehood recognition “largely symbolic”, while Netanyahu, whose government is fervently opposed to such a move, said his country may take unspecified “unilateral steps” in response.

The October 2023 attack by Hamas resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza has killed at least 64,905 people, also mostly civilians, according to figures from the territory’s health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

Presidency Rejects Atiku’s Hunger Claims, Says Nigeria Is Progressing Under Tinubu

The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the country is being overwhelmed by hunger, insisting that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making steady progress.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticized Atiku’s remarks as out of touch with current realities.

He accused the former VP of exaggerating the nation’s challenges and ignoring recent economic improvements.

Atiku had earlier described the hunger situation as “unacceptable” and claimed that Tinubu had shown no signs of addressing poverty or food insecurity more than two years into his administration.

Responding, Onanuga said Atiku’s rhetoric, comparing Nigeria’s situation to France before the 1789 Revolution and Russia before 1917, was “misleading and inflammatory.”

“Talk is cheap,” Onanuga said, adding that Atiku’s comments fail to reflect what he called “the authentic Nigerian reality.”

He cited recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicating that headline inflation had declined for five consecutive months, and that the country had recorded a record trade surplus, with non-oil exports nearly matching oil exports.

Onanuga also highlighted a rise in foreign exchange reserves, now nearing $42 billion, up from $32 billion when Tinubu assumed office.

He said over $7 billion in arrears had been cleared, including $800 million owed to international airlines.

He concluded that Nigeria is experiencing “unprecedented revenues,” enabling state governments to pay salaries and gratuities promptly, and still fund capital and social development projects.

“Nigeria is on the right path,” Onanuga stated.

“President Tinubu’s administration is correcting the errors of the past, especially those created under the PDP government during Atiku’s time as Vice President.”

I Didn’t Dump Labour Party, My Move To ADC Is Part Of Coalition Strategy, Says Rhodes-Vivour

Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has clarified that his recent alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) does not mean he has abandoned the Labour Party.

Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television, Rhodes-Vivour explained that his move is in line with a broader opposition coalition strategy aimed at building a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

“I wouldn’t say I dumped LP. The party is currently split into two factions, one of which supports the coalition we’re building. ADC is simply the platform chosen for that effort,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour, who contested the 2023 Lagos governorship election but lost to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, declared his intention to run again in 2027, emphasizing that the coalition brings together members from LP, PDP, and even APC.

“We’ve built networks, learned from the last election, and are growing stronger. The coalition helps us reach more people and gain wider grassroots support,” he added.

He also raised alarm over what he described as police obstruction of opposition activities, citing an incident in Alimosho, where his group had paid and received approval to hold a reception for himself and Peter Obi under the ADC banner.

Despite fulfilling all legal requirements, Rhodes-Vivour said security forces occupied the venue ahead of the event, and on the same day allowed the APC to host a rally there under police protection.

“We had approvals, receipts, everything in place. But on Thursday, they occupied the venue, and on Saturday, the APC held their own event at the same location with full security support. The Commissioner of Police must explain why,” he demanded.

He added that over 80 policemen and an armoured carrier were deployed to stop the ADC event, with senior officers citing “orders from above.”

Despite the challenges, Rhodes-Vivour said the opposition is staying the course, aiming to approach the 2027 election more strategically, united, and prepared.

“We are building a stronger, more structured campaign. This coalition is not just about politics, it’s about real representation for the people,” he said.
