Tinubu’s Government Worse Than Any Military Regime, Says El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has launched a scathing attack on the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as worse than any military regime Nigeria has ever experienced.

El-Rufai made the comments during a solidarity visit from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over the weekend, following a recent attack at the inauguration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State.

Thugs had disrupted the inauguration ceremony, prompting accusations and counter-accusations between El-Rufai and the Kaduna State Government regarding who was responsible for the violence.

In the aftermath, the police summoned El-Rufai and other ADC leaders for questioning over alleged public disturbance.

During his meeting with Atiku, El-Rufai accused President Tinubu of authoritarian tendencies and condemned his centralization of power, claiming it undermines the principles of democracy and federalism.

“Honestly sir, to me, it is even a disgrace. I mean, for people to behave the way they are behaving, it means that all the years of saying that we are for democracy and NADECO, all the claims that we are fighting for true federalism and so on—it was all a pretense, all fake again,” El-Rufai said.

“This government (Tinubu’s) is trying to centralize everything instead of devolving power to the lower levels.”

He likened the president’s leadership style to that of Paul Biya, Cameroon’s long-time leader who has held onto power since 1982.

“We are facing an evil of such a large proportion in the history of this country that if we don’t come together and end this Tinubu administration by 2027, Tinubu will try to be our Paul Biya. All the signs are there, this is how Paul Biya started,” he warned.

El-Rufai went further, claiming that even under former military and civilian regimes, political opposition was not stifled to the extent it is today.

“You (Atiku Abubakar) are our leader. You have done this fight before. You have fought the military. You have experience in democratic governance.

When you and Obasanjo were in charge of this country, no one was being harassed because they had a different political view, never, not once,” he said.

“Even President Buhari, with his military background, never did that. And here we are, facing full-fledged civilians, but they are worse than any military regime we’ve ever had.”

El-Rufai echoed Atiku’s earlier calls for unity among opposition parties and urged a joint effort to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

“Your call that we must unite is a timely one. I think the people of Nigeria have made up their minds that APC must be voted out.

Nigerians are looking forward to Tinubu’s ouster. We must provide the leadership and unity of purpose that we have talked about,” he said.

“With your leadership, forbearance, and diplomatic skills of bringing people together, I am sure we will reach the Promised Land.”

In response, Atiku Abubakar commended El-Rufai for speaking out and reaffirmed his commitment to democratic change in 2027.

He emphasized the need for all opposition stakeholders to remain steadfast and work together to ensure a peaceful democratic transition.

Enugu Police Raid Drug Den, Arrest Suspect, Recover Cannabis Variants, Drug Paraphernalia

SP Daniel Ndukwe

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, in a joint operation with local Forest Guards, have raided a suspected drug hideout in Amaowere-Nike, Enugu, resulting in the arrest of a 43-year-old man and the recovery of various illicit substances and paraphernalia.

The operation, which took place around 7am on September 19, 2025, was conducted in compliance with the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the raid targeted a “notorious container shop” known for the sale of illicit drugs.

The suspect, identified as Elias Ukachukwu Agu (male, 43), reportedly confessed during interrogation to being involved in the distribution of illicit substances.

Items recovered include Fourteen (14) cups and twenty-five (25) sachets of suspected Canadian Loud, Six (6) sachets of suspected Colorado (commonly referred to as Colos), One (1) weed crusher and Two (2) packets of Rizla (rolling paper).

Both “Loud” and “Colos” are high-grade cannabis variants, widely abused among youths.

The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, CP Giwa has issued a warning to the public, particularly young people, against involvement in the sale, purchase, or use of illicit drugs.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling crime in all its forms and called for continued public support and cooperation in maintaining safety across Enugu State.

Political Association Drags INEC To Court Over Rejection Of Name, Logo

A political association, I Love Nigeria, has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the rejection of its proposed name and logo during the ongoing political party registration process.

The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja (Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/2002/2025), was initiated by the group’s Protem National Chairman, John Collins Nwobodo, Esq, and Protem National Secretary, Aya Yakubu.

In its originating summons, I Love Nigeria is asking the court to determine whether INEC has the legal authority to reject a political association’s application solely on the grounds of the name and logo being “unsuitable”, especially when the proposed identity complies with all relevant constitutional and statutory provisions.

The association cites the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79(2) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the INEC Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties (2022) as the legal frameworks supporting their claim.

Reliefs sought by the association include;

  1. A declaration that INEC lacks the authority to disapprove the association’s application based on its name and logo.
  2. A court order compelling INEC to accept the name I Love Nigeria and the submitted logo as valid.
  3. An injunction restraining INEC from excluding the group from the registration process.
  4. A directive compelling INEC to provide administrative guidance and support throughout the registration stages, as outlined in Section 75 of the Electoral Act.

The plaintiffs argue that the name and logo submitted meet all legal requirements and that INEC’s rejection is arbitrary and unlawful.

They are requesting the court to nullify INEC’s decision and allow the association to proceed with the next steps in the registration process.

This case emerges amid heightened tensions after INEC reportedly rejected 157 letters of intent from various associations vying for political party registration, prompting widespread criticism and legal challenges from affected groups.

Gov Mbah Justifies 30% Allocation To Education As Enugu Transitions To Smart Green Schools

Enugu State on Monday marked a turning point in its educational history, as Governor Peter Mbah’s administration commenced the transition from traditional primary and junior secondary schools to Smart Green Schools, an ambitious and transformative initiative aimed at redefining learning in the state.

In a statewide broadcast to commemorate the launch, Governor Mbah underscored the urgent need to move away from outdated learning models and embrace world-class, technology-driven, experiential education.

“We are no longer a state waiting to be saved – we are a state shaping the future on our own terms,” the governor declared.

Speaking on the broader vision behind the initiative, Governor Mbah linked the Smart Green School project to the future of Africa itself, stressing that the continent’s potential lies in its youthful population.

“Africa today is the youngest continent in the world. More than 60% of our people are under the age of 25. By 2050, our population will reach 2.5 billion, and one in every three young people on earth will be an African,” he noted.

“This is not just a statistic; it is a summons. It means that the destiny of African nations rests on what we nurture in the minds and hearts of our children.”

The governor emphasized the need to raise children who are equipped with values, skills, and opportunities to shape the continent’s future.

“If we raise them well and leave them opportunity, when they inherit tomorrow; when they own it; they will shape it and defend it. If we fail them, no amount of slogans will save us.”

Mbah reiterated that his administration’s slogan, “Tomorrow is here,” is more than a campaign catchphrase, it is a guiding philosophy.

“It is the recognition that the sovereignty of our state, of Nigeria, and indeed of Africa, will be determined by the strength of our young people, their ability to think critically, to innovate, and to act with integrity.

“Our sovereignty begins in the classroom. It begins with how we choose to welcome the child into the world. And this takes time, care – and investment.”

Recalling his personal journey, Mbah spoke candidly about the power of education in his life.

“I had to journey from the slums of Port Harcourt, where every day was a struggle and nothing was guaranteed,” he shared.

“Education and resilience were my passport to a life of possibility.”

He stressed that no child in Enugu should have to overcome poverty to access quality education.

“At home and at school, when a community receives and educates each child as a whole human being, it is akin to public service at the deepest level.

“The habits a child rehearses, attention, curiosity, patience, empathy, self-belief – become the civic habits of our culture. A school day shaped by rhythm, responsibility, and care quietly trains the nervous system for self-regulation and the social muscle for cooperation.

“Those capacities later show up as lower violence, stronger communities, and a public square that can tolerate disagreement without tearing itself apart.

“The school, then, is not just a service; it is a commons where the human village renews itself.”

Describing the Smart Green Schools as the most personal and transformative project of his administration, Mbah said:

“They are not only schools, they are my promise of a new society; my covenant with the Enugu child. In them, Tomorrow Is Here finds its truest form.”

He outlined the comprehensive features of the schools:

“Each of the 260 schools is designed as a complete ecosystem for learning. ‘Smart’ means integrating technology, critical thinking, and problem-solving into every subject. Each has about 25 digitally-connected modern classrooms, ICT centres, robotics and AI labs, e-libraries, and spaces for experiential learning.”

“They are ‘green’ because they have renewable energy sources and smart farms where children plant, grow, and harvest, learning agriculture not as theory but as practice.”

“And they are inclusive. Every child is provided with free uniforms, books, meals, and tablets. Each school has its own medical clinic, reliable water systems, and community halls that anchor the school in village life. Housing for teachers is on-site so that the best educators live within the communities they serve, ensuring continuity of care and commitment.”

Mbah described the schools as more than physical infrastructure:

“Smart Green Schools are not just an investment in classrooms, but in the soul of our people. The habits a child rehearses, of curiosity and collaboration, become the civic habits of the culture. A generation raised in schools of innovation will build an economy of innovation. A generation raised in classrooms of fairness will create a politic of justice.

“So, those buildings are beyond mere bricks; we see in them children eagerly looking forward to the future.”

He contrasted the new learning model with the old system:

“In the old system, a child could pass through six years of schooling and still be limited to memorising theories on a chalkboard. In the new model, the classroom is a creativity hub; learning becomes experiential; theory meets practice, and knowledge is translated into tangible skills; children are able to put into practice what they have learnt.”

While acknowledging some setbacks in rolling out all 260 schools simultaneously, Governor Mbah assured the public that the government is fully committed to completing the project.

“This journey has not been easy. We know that every Smart Green School is not yet complete. There have been setbacks, delays, and challenges to overcome.

“While some schools will open today, some will open next week, and yet some more in a fortnight.

“We do not claim perfection. What we do claim is resolve.

“We set out with a bold vision, and boldness sometimes requires a little more time. But by all means, every school shall be open this term. No school’s academic calendar will be interrupted. We have planned for every contingency.

“Make no mistake: we will deliver. Because attending a Smart Green School – even if it means waiting a few more weeks – is worth it. It is the transformation of a lifetime for our children, and we ask for your patience as we finish the work. We’re doubling down on our commitment.”

Governor Mbah appealed to communities across the state to take ownership of the schools and help safeguard their future.

“These schools are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring world-class education home to Enugu. Cherish them. Defend them. Guard them as a community. Take shared responsibility for our future, which is walking in on two small feet every time a child enters these gates.

“Support the teachers, the custodians and guardians of our future farmers, entrepreneurs, nurses, artists, engineers, lawyers, and leaders.

“They are the cornerstone of this transformation. Equipment and buildings matter, but machines do not teach; people do.”

He added that the state government had invested in teacher training, mentorship, and resources to support the new model of education.

Justifying the allocation of 33% of the state budget to education, Mbah stated:

“The wealth of human potential is the truest capital of our society.”

N254.37 Billion: Ibas Rejects Assembly’s Move To Probe His Six‑Month Administration

The immediate past Rivers State sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok‑Ete Ibas (retd.), has pushed back against the State House of Assembly’s plan to probe expenditures under his leadership during the six‑month emergency rule.

The Assembly adopted the resolution in its first plenary session following the end of the emergency regime.

Under the emergency rule, declared by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the elected Assembly were suspended.

Ibas administered the state from March through mid‑September. He handed back power on 17 September.

During that time, Rivers State received approximately ₦254.37 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Breakdown shows allocations of ₦44.66bn in March; ₦44.42bn in April; ₦42.80bn in May; ₦42.30bn in June; ₦38.42bn in July; and ₦41.76bn in August.

The largest share of the allocations, over 50%, came via oil derivation, underscoring the state’s dependence on oil‑linked revenues.

Civil society organisations have expressed concern over the sizeable inflows, pointing out that several key capital projects remain stalled, including the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.

The Chairman of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Rivers, Enefaa Georgewill, has described the financial processes as opaque and has called for the establishment of a panel of inquiry to track both federal allocations and internally generated revenues under Ibas.

Responding through his Senior Special Adviser on Media, Hector Igbikiowubu, Ibas argued that the Assembly lacks the authority to probe him as administrator because he was appointed by the President, not the Assembly.

He also suggested that probing his tenure would amount to probing the President and National Assembly themselves.

He called the House’s probe resolution “commentary” and said any serious attempt to investigate his administration’s spending would be a “fool’s errand.”

Meanwhile, Governor Fubara, now reinstated following the end of the emergency rule, has appealed for continued unity and expressed gratitude to citizens for their prayers.

In his first public appearance since resuming official duties, he emphasized that peace and development require collective support and urged Rivers people to remain hopeful.

UK’s Recognition Of Palestinian State ‘Absolutely Disastrous’ – Badenoch

Leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has strongly criticised the Labour-led government’s decision to officially recognise the State of Palestine, describing the move as “absolutely disastrous” and a grave strategic error.

Badenoch, writing on social media platform X, accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of rewarding terrorism “without any conditions” and ignoring the plight of hostages still held in Gaza.

“Disastrous. Absolutely disastrous. We will all rue the day this decision was made. Rewarding terrorism with no conditions whatsoever put in place for Hamas,” she wrote.

“It leaves hostages languishing in Gaza and does nothing to stop the suffering of innocent people caught in this war.”

The opposition leader said the government was focused on what she called fringe ideological agendas instead of solving Britain’s pressing domestic challenges.

“They cannot fix the NHS, so they push assisted suicide. They cannot create jobs for young people so they give them votes at 16. They cannot sort out immigration but they will recognise Palestine instead,” she said, taking aim at Starmer’s policy direction.

“Everything we are seeing is the consequence of a Prime Minister who has no plan for the country and no judgment.”

Badenoch also referred to the UK’s past decisions on international reparations, criticising Starmer for what she described as “appeasement politics” and promising that the Conservatives would undo what she called a historic mistake.

“He will spend the next four years delivering the hobby horses of the Labour left to stay in power and leave a HUGE mess for us to clean up,” she warned.

On Sunday, the United Kingdom formally recognised the State of Palestine, a move aimed at reviving hope for peace in the Middle East through a two-state solution.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” Starmer posted on X.

Canada and Australia made similar announcements on the same day. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated:

“Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel.”

The UK and Canada are now the first G7 nations to take this step. France and others are expected to follow suit during the UN General Assembly meeting opening this week in New York.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly rejected the recognition, calling it a reward for terrorism and reiterating his government’s firm stance against Palestinian statehood.

“I have a clear message for those leaders who recognise a Palestinian state after the horrific massacre on October 7: you are granting a huge reward to terror,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

“And I have another message for you: it will not happen. No Palestinian state will be established west of the Jordan River.”

Netanyahu also renewed his pledge to continue expanding Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, which he referred to by its biblical names “Judea and Samaria.”

“We have doubled Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, and we will continue on this path,” he said.

‘Palestinian State Will Not Happen’ – Netanyahu To Western Leaders

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has firmly rejected the recognition of a Palestinian state by the governments of Britain, Australia, and Canada, describing it as a reward for terrorism and vowing it will never materialize.

In a strongly worded statement released Sunday, Netanyahu declared:

“I have a clear message for those leaders who recognised a Palestinian state after the horrific October 7 massacre: you are granting a huge reward to terror.”

“And I have another message for you, it will not happen. No Palestinian state will be established west of the Jordan River.”

His remarks come in direct response to the formal recognition of Palestinian statehood by the three Western nations earlier in the day, a move that marks a significant shift in global diplomatic support for Palestinian aspirations.

Netanyahu also used the opportunity to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to expanding Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, which he referred to by its Biblical name, “Judea and Samaria.”

“We have doubled Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria, and we will continue on this path,” he said, adding that resisting pressure to allow a Palestinian state had been one of his government’s consistent priorities.

The declaration by the UK, Australia, and Canada has deepened the rift between Israel and some of its traditional allies, coming amid ongoing international criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which have led to significant civilian casualties and humanitarian concerns.

While Palestinian leaders have hailed the recognitions as a long-overdue acknowledgment of their right to self-determination, Netanyahu insists the creation of a Palestinian state poses a direct threat to Israel’s existence.

“For years, I have prevented the creation of this terror state, despite enormous domestic and international pressure. We have done so with determination and political wisdom,” he said.
