Suspect In Charlie Kirk Shooting Apprehended, Trump Confirms

U.S President Donald Trump announced Friday that a suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Speaking during a live interview on Fox News, Trump revealed the individual was turned in by someone close to him.

“Somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump said. “The person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister and brought him to a U.S. Marshal who was fantastic. They drove into police headquarters, and he’s there now.”

He added, “We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for.”

The suspect allegedly shot Kirk, a prominent conservative figure and founder of Turning Point USA, during an appearance at a Utah university on Wednesday.

Authorities say a single shot, fired from an estimated 200-yard distance, struck the 31-year-old in the neck, killing him instantly.

According to officials, the shooter used a high-powered bolt-action rifle and fled the scene by running across a university rooftop before disappearing into nearby woods.

The weapon was later recovered in that area.

Surveillance footage released Thursday showed a man wearing Converse shoes, a black baseball cap, sunglasses, jeans, and a long-sleeved top featuring an American flag motif.

The image sparked a multi-agency manhunt involving hundreds of officers from 20 different agencies.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that the state would seek the death penalty in the case.

The killing has drawn intense national attention and political reaction.

Vice President JD Vance transported Kirk’s body to Phoenix aboard the official Air Force 2 aircraft. Footage showed Vance accompanying the casket with a solemn expression.

At a Thursday night vigil in Orem Park, hundreds gathered wearing red MAGA hats and carrying American flags. Attendees prayed and observed a moment of silence in Kirk’s memory.

“It still feels insane that this happened,” said 35-year-old Jonathan Silva. “It’s totally surreal.”

Dave Sanchez, 26, a student who witnessed the shooting, told AFP, “It made me sick to my stomach. We watch him all the time, and it really does feel like losing a family member.”

Charlie Kirk rose to national prominence after co-founding Turning Point USA in 2012.

Known for his energetic presence and combative style during campus events, Kirk became a prominent face in right-wing media, often advocating for conservative causes such as strict immigration policies, Christian values and gun rights.

He cultivated a massive following on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

His supporters have described him as a “martyr” for conservative ideals.

While right-wing media outlets expressed grief and outrage, President Trump has called on the public to remain calm and respond peacefully.

Nepal Seeks New Leader As Army Restores Order After Deadly Protests

Nepal’s political leadership and military are scrambling to fill a leadership void after violent anti-corruption protests forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and left parliament in ruins.

The unrest, led primarily by youth protesters under the “Gen Z” banner, escalated earlier this week into the worst violence since the country’s civil war ended in 2006.

At least 51 people were killed, including 21 demonstrators, as rallies turned into riots following a controversial social media ban.

By Wednesday, the military had reasserted control over Kathmandu’s streets, imposing a curfew and launching talks with key political figures and protest representatives to stabilize the country.

Among the frontrunners for interim leadership is Sushila Karki, 73, Nepal’s first female Chief Justice.

Discussions on a potential transitional government are ongoing, with President Ramchandra Paudel, army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, and protest leaders including Sudan Gurung involved.

“A meeting is set for this afternoon with the president, the army chief, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, our representative Sudan Gurung, and a legal expert,” protester Nimesh Shrestha told AFP.

Gurung stated their main demand is the immediate dissolution of parliament. Karki, however, urged dialogue and noted that the legislative body remains constitutionally valid.

President Paudel addressed the nation Thursday, promising a swift and peaceful resolution: “A solution to the problem is being sought, as soon as possible.”

Calm returned to Kathmandu by Friday, with army patrols enforcing curfew measures. Citizens cautiously emerged to restock essential supplies during temporary curfew breaks.

“I stayed indoors with my family—I was scared,” said local resident Naveen Kumar Das.

Fuel stations, shops, and tea stalls were crowded as residents took advantage of relaxed restrictions. “We finally came out because it’s a bit calmer,” said Laxmi Thapa, 32.

The protests triggered a wave of chaos: protesters set fire to parliament, government buildings, and a Hilton Hotel, and over 12,500 inmates escaped from prisons across the country.

Police say more than 100 stolen firearms have since been recovered.

The unrest reflects broader frustrations in Nepal, particularly among youth facing widespread unemployment and limited economic opportunity.

Around 20% of young people aged 15–24 are jobless, and over 40% of the population is between 16 and 40 years old.

James Karki, 24, one of the demonstrators, expressed hope despite the turmoil.

“We started this movement to make a better Nepal. And I’m optimistic that the army will hear us out.”

Anambra Set To Build Second Airport, Launch Aerotropolis Project In Orumba North

Barely four years after the inauguration of the Chinua Achebe International Cargo Airport in Umueri, the Anambra State Government has announced plans to construct a second airport, this time in Ndikelionwu, located in Orumba North Local Government Area.

The new airport is part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader vision to transform Anambra into a smart megacity, driven by innovation, infrastructure and investment.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the proposed site, Mr. Martins Nwafor, Managing Director of the Chinua Achebe Cargo Airport and chairman of the newly formed Airport and Aerotropolis Committee, said the project would not only expand Anambra’s aviation capacity but also integrate it into a larger aerotropolis model.

“We are envisioning an airport-driven city that combines aviation infrastructure with commercial, residential and logistics zones. This project will unlock massive economic opportunities and fast-track Anambra’s industrialisation,” said Nwafor.

The state’s first airport project, located in Umueri, was launched on April 11, 2017 and completed in three years under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano, who inaugurated it on October 30, 2021.

Now, with a second airport in the pipeline, the state seeks to position itself as a strategic transport and investment hub in southeastern Nigeria.

During the site inspection, geologists and geophysicists from the Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company Limited conducted assessments to determine a suitable location for construction.

Also present were key government officials including Prof. Charles Ofoegbu, MD, Anambra State Solid Minerals Development Company, AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd.), SSA to the Governor on Security and Mr. Chukwudi Ezenwa, architect and founder of Sliding Towers.

Leaders of the host community in Ndikelionwu expressed appreciation for the government’s decision to site such a transformative project in their area.

Former President-General of the Ndikelionwu Welfare Association, Fabian Nwosu, along with Vice President Ifesinachi Onwurah, pledged the community’s full support and cooperation.

“This project brings hope to our people. The job opportunities and economic activity it will attract are beyond measure,” Nwosu said.

According to the state government, the second airport will be more than a transport terminal, it will serve as the nucleus of an industrial park and logistics ecosystem designed to attract foreign and local investment.

“This isn’t just about flights and runways,” Nwafor emphasized.

“It’s about building an economic corridor that can power the future of Anambra.”

Air Peace Pilots Test Positive For Alcohol, Cannabis After Runway Incident – NSIB Report

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has found that an Air Peace pilot and co-pilot tested positive for alcohol and cannabis in toxicology screenings, following a runway incident at Port Harcourt International Airport.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 13, 2025, when an Air Peace Boeing 737, carrying 103 passengers on a scheduled flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt, veered off the runway after landing.

A preliminary report, signed by Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, and obtained by The PUNCH, disclosed the results.

The NSIB report said:
“The aircraft landed long on Runway 21 after an unstabilised final approach. The aircraft touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and came to a final stop 209 metres into the clearway. All passengers and crew disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported.”

Regarding the toxicology findings, the report further noted that “One crew member was found to have alcohol in his system, while another tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound in cannabis … These results are being reviewed under the human performance and safety management components of the investigation.”

As a result of the findings, NSIB has issued immediate safety recommendations for Air Peace, urging the airline to strengthen its internal monitoring of crew fitness for duty and to reinforce training in handling unstabilised approaches and making go-around decisions.

After spending 30 days in detention, Imo-based journalist and publisher of First Citizen Newspaper, Ejike Ogbonna, has been granted bail by a Magistrate Court sitting in Owerri.

The court, presided over by Magistrate C. J. Uzoechi, granted bail in the sum of ₦2 million, with stringent conditions.

These include the presentation of a surety who must provide proof of ownership of landed property within the court’s jurisdiction, as well as endorsement by a recognized traditional ruler.

Ogbonna, who was brought to court in handcuffs, is facing a four-count charge related to alleged cyberbullying and defamation.

He is accused of defaming the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Compliance, Chinasa Nwaneri, through a voice note allegedly shared on social media platforms.

While ruling on the bail application, Magistrate Uzoechi affirmed that the alleged offense is bailable under the law, and adjourned the case to October 3, 2025, for further hearing.

The journalist’s prolonged detention and the nature of the charges have sparked concerns within the media community in the state.
