UK Ambassador To US Dismissed Over Epstein Ties

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has removed Peter Mandelson, the UK’s Ambassador to the United States, following the emergence of new emails highlighting Mandelson’s close relationship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In a statement released by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office on Thursday, the government said Mandelson’s communications with Epstein “demonstrate a far deeper and more troubling connection” than previously disclosed.

The messages came to light through reports by The Sun and Bloomberg, which revealed Mandelson had provided supportive messages to Epstein during his 2008 criminal investigations.

“In particular, Peter Mandelson’s suggestion that Epstein’s first conviction was wrongful and should be challenged is new information,” the statement noted.

“In light of that, and in consideration of the victims of Epstein’s crimes, Mandelson has been removed from his post effective immediately.”

Mandelson, 71, a former Labour minister and longtime political strategist, had been appointed ambassador earlier this year.

He had previously served in key roles under former Prime Minister Tony Blair but resigned twice due to unrelated controversies.

According to the reports, Mandelson sent Epstein emails during the 2008 investigation encouraging him to “remember the Art of War” in dealing with prosecutors. In one message, he wrote.

“I think the world of you.” In another, he urged Epstein to pursue early release from prison. The emails also revealed that Mandelson referred to Epstein as his “best pal” in a 2003 birthday letter.

Responding to the allegations, Mandelson told the BBC he had “relied on assurances of [Epstein’s] innocence which later proved horrendously false.”

“His lawyers insisted it was all a setup, a conspiracy. I foolishly believed them. I deeply regret continuing that association for as long as I did,” Mandelson added.

The diplomatic fallout comes just days before US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit the UK on a state trip.

Mandelson had been tasked with strengthening ties between the UK and the Trump administration, a key element of the government’s post-Brexit foreign policy strategy.

Calls for Mandelson’s removal had intensified in recent days. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch labelled his position “untenable,” and several Labour MPs also urged Prime Minister Starmer to act.

On Wednesday, Starmer had defended Mandelson, stating that “due process was followed” at the time of his appointment.

However, the prime minister reversed course following the release of the emails.

“These revelations are incompatible with the responsibilities and ethical standards expected of our diplomatic representatives,” said Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Three Policemen, Two Vigilantes Perish In Deadly Kogi Ambush

Tragedy struck on Wednesday in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, as three police officers and two vigilante members were killed in an attack at a security checkpoint.

The Kogi State Government has strongly condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice for those responsible.

The incident is one of the deadliest security breaches in the state in recent months, amplifying concerns over the safety of security personnel operating in volatile rural communities.

In a statement on Thursday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the deaths and described the attack as a major threat to ongoing efforts to stabilize security in the state.

“The Kogi State Government has received with deep concern reports of security breaches at two flashpoints in the State today,” Fanwo said.

“This includes an attack on security personnel in Yagba West LGA, which tragically led to the loss of gallant police officers, and a kidnapping incident along the Lokoja-Obajana road.”

Despite the violent attack in Egbe, Fanwo noted a separate incident where 17 kidnapped passengers along the Lokoja–Obajana highway were rescued following joint efforts by the Nigerian Army and local hunters.

“We commend the swift response of the security forces and local hunters involved in the rescue operation. Their bravery is a testament to the resilience of our security architecture,” he said.

Fanwo extended condolences to the families of the slain officers and vigilantes, saying their “supreme sacrifice” in the line of duty would not be forgotten.

“Their courage inspires our continued commitment to fight criminality in Kogi State,” he added.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, according to the commissioner, has directed the deployment of more personnel and tactical resources to strategic locations to prevent further attacks.

He reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance policy on insecurity and reaffirmed its support for both formal and informal security networks, including local vigilante groups.

The state government also urged citizens to remain vigilant and support security efforts by sharing timely and useful information.

“We call on the people of Kogi to stand together with our security agencies. Together, we will defeat those who seek to disrupt the peace and safety of our communities,” Fanwo concluded.

BREAKING: Court Sentences Ansaru Commander To 15 Years In Prison For Terrorism

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced Mahmud Usman, a senior commander of the proscribed terrorist group Ansaru, to 15 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to illegal mining activities used to procure arms for terrorism and kidnapping.

The charge was brought by the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to the court proceedings, the illegal mining enabled Usman to “acquire arms for terrorism and kidnapping purposes.”

Justice Emeka Nwite presided over the case, and pending the trial of the thirty‑one other charges against him, Usman was remanded in DSS custody.

Usman and another suspect, Abubakar Abba, are accused in a 32‑count charge of various acts of terrorism dating back to 2022, including the attack on Wawa Cantonment in Kainji, New Bussa, in Niger State, which resulted in mass casualties.

Other allegations against them include receiving training in weapons handling, war tactics, and fabrication of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from terror camps, including training in Mali, according to the DSS.

The court also noted that they are implicated in the July 2022 Kuje prison break, which freed over 600 inmates, several kidnappings (notably of French engineer Francis Collomp in 2013), and other armed robberies, including the 2019 abduction of Alhaji Musa Umar Uba and the kidnapping of the Magajin Garin Daura.

Justice Nwite has fixed October 21 for the trial to begin in relation to the remaining charges.

Anambra Gov’ship: APC Postpones Inauguration Of Campaign Council

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the postponement of the planned inauguration of its National Campaign Council for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, disclosed the development in a statement shared via the APC’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday.

Originally scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, the event has been deferred to a later date, which will be communicated in due course.

“The party deeply regrets any inconvenience this change may cause and assures all stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to ensuring a successful outing in the November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election,” the statement read.

The postponement comes as major political parties gear up for what is expected to be a tightly contested election in Anambra.

The APC, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party (LP) are all vying for control of the strategic South-East state.

Historically, Anambra has posed significant challenges for the APC, with the state being a stronghold of APGA since 2006.

In the 2021 governorship race, APC candidate Senator Andy Uba finished third behind Charles Soludo (APGA) and Valentine Ozigbo (PDP).

Despite the party’s limited success in the region, the APC continues efforts to expand its influence, including by strengthening alliances with local political actors and leveraging its control of the federal government.

The November 8 election is widely viewed as a litmus test for the APC’s standing in the South-East, a region where it has historically struggled for widespread support.

Ghana Accepts Nigerians, Other African Deportees From US

Ghana has started receiving West African nationals deported from the United States, among them Nigerians, President John Dramani Mahama confirmed on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, Mahama revealed that the first group of 14 deportees, including Nigerians, a Gambian and others, have arrived in Accra.

Ghanaian authorities are coordinating their onward return to their home countries.

“We were approached by the US government to accept third-country nationals being deported, and we agreed that West African nationals could be accommodated because they do not require visas to enter Ghana,” the president explained.

Mahama highlighted that this decision was grounded in the fact that West Africans generally travel to Ghana visa-free.

The move aligns with Washington’s intensified deportation efforts under President Donald Trump, who has pursued policies pushing for the removal of migrants to “third countries” as part of a stricter immigration stance.

The Trump administration has already deported migrants to countries like Eswatini, South Sudan, and Rwanda, despite concerns from human rights organizations about their safety.

Nigeria, in contrast, has declined similar requests from the US. In July, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, stated that the government would not accept deportees from outside the country, citing economic and security risks.

President Trump also met with five West African leaders in the White House on July 9.

One of the main aims of the meeting was to encourage these countries including Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal to accept deported migrants from third nations.

UK Lifts Travel Ban On Kaduna, Upgrades Travel Advisory To Amber

The United Kingdom has lifted its travel ban on Kaduna State, moving it from the “Red” to the “Amber” category in its travel advisory, a clear sign of growing international confidence in the state’s improving security situation.

The announcement came during the signing of the Kaduna Mutual Accountability Framework (KaMAF) between Kaduna State Government and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Wednesday.

Kaduna was placed on the UK’s “Red” list in 2022 amid escalating insecurity from banditry and insurgent violence that led to school closures and mass displacement.

With the upgrade to “Amber,” British travelers can now visit Kaduna with fewer restrictions, though caution is still advised in some rural communities.

Governor Uba Sani and Cynthia Rowe, the UK’s Development Director for Nigeria, signed the KaMAF agreement, aimed at deepening cooperation in governance, education, health, agriculture and institutional reforms.

Governor Sani hailed the development as a “major endorsement of Kaduna’s resilience and reform efforts,” pointing to significant achievements in healthcare, education, and agricultural development under his administration.

“Over 10 percent of our 2025 budget is dedicated to enhancing crop and livestock productivity. This UK decision further motivates us to deliver inclusive growth,” he said.

The governor also highlighted initiatives such as the Local Government Transparency, Accountability and Sustainability programme, Issue-Based Projects, and Community Development Charters, designed to promote citizen engagement and ensure accountability.

“Our focus remains on building lasting institutions that transcend administrations, giving citizens a meaningful role in governance,” Sani added.

Cynthia Rowe praised Kaduna’s strides in security and reform, noting that the travel advisory upgrade reflects “significant improvements, especially in rural areas.”

“This change signals to investors and development partners that Kaduna is open for business,” she said, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to support Kaduna through KaMAF.

Rowe emphasized that KaMAF represents more than agreements on paper; it is about delivering real progress, supporting growth, strengthening institutions and ensuring inclusive development.

Police Arrest Man Claiming To Be ‘Obi Of Lagos’ Over Alleged Illegal Coronation

Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a man who allegedly posed as the “Obi of Lagos,” along with three others, for attempting to conduct an illegal installation ceremony.

According to police spokesperson Babaseyi Oluseyi, the main suspect, 65-year-old Engr. Chibuike Azubike, an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North LGA of Imo State, was arrested in connection with the planned coronation.

Three alleged accomplices, Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), Mr. Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41) were also taken into custody.

All four are currently being held at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

Authorities say the group had planned to unveil a ₦1.5 billion “Palace of the Obi of Lagos State” during a ceremony scheduled for Saturday, September 13, at Apple Hall in Amuwo Odofin.

Police operatives, however, disrupted the event and sealed off the venue to prevent any breach of public peace.

“The police promptly sealed off the venue in order to forestall any breach of the peace and to protect unsuspecting members of the public from being misled,” the statement read.

An investigation is ongoing into the group’s activities and authorities have promised to charge the suspects to court once inquiries are complete.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, issued a stern warning to the public, advising against falling for impersonators seeking to exploit traditional institutions for personal or financial gain.

He emphasized that such acts violate state laws and have the potential to disrupt societal harmony.

“The Command will continue to enforce the law firmly and decisively against any individual or group engaging in acts that undermine legality, public order, and the integrity of the state,” the police assured.

FG Gazettes New Tax Reform Laws Following Presidential Assent

The Federal Government has officially gazetted a new set of tax reform laws, following President Bola Tinubu’s assent on June 26, 2025. This move marks a major restructuring of Nigeria’s fiscal and tax administration landscape.

In a statement released Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter), Kamorudeen Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President, announced the publication of the laws in the national gazette.

The new legal framework includes four key legislations

– Nigeria Tax Act (NTA) 2025

– Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025

– Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (NRSEA) 2025

– Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act (JRBEA) 2025

These reforms are designed to modernise Nigeria’s tax system, improve revenue generation, and promote transparency in administration.

Among the key highlights:

– Small businesses with annual turnover below ₦100 million and total assets under ₦250 million are now exempt from corporate tax.

– The corporate tax rate for larger companies could be reduced from 30% to 25%, subject to presidential discretion.

– A “top-up” tax will apply to local firms with revenues exceeding ₦50 billion and multinational companies earning above €750 million.

Additionally, the reforms introduce a 5% annual tax credit for eligible investments in key sectors, especially agriculture. Businesses dealing in foreign currencies can now remit taxes in naira, calculated at the official exchange rate.

Yusuf explained that the NTA and NTAA will take effect from January 1, 2026, while the NRSEA and JRBEA became effective immediately from June 26, 2025.

“These reforms are intended to streamline the tax system, foster a more business-friendly environment, encourage investment, and enhance Nigeria’s fiscal resilience,” Yusuf said.

He added that the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reducing dependence on oil revenues.

The gazetting of these laws provides the necessary legal framework to begin implementation and enforcement, offering clear guidelines for both local and international taxpayers operating in Nigeria.
