BREAKING: PDP Makes U-turn, Throws 2027 Presidential Ticket Open To All Regions

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its 2027 presidential ticket is open to aspirants from all regions of Nigeria, even as zoning to the South remains a guiding factor.

Dr. Gbenga Olawepo‑Hashim, a technocrat and politician from the North‑Central, has welcomed the decision, seeing it as vindication of his longstanding arguments for fairness and inclusion.

Prominent analyst Udenta Udenta emphasized that unity among opposition parties will be critical to challenge the ruling APC.

Without cohesion especially between PDP and the Labour Party, he warned, the APC could maintain its hold on power.

National Legal Adviser of PDP, Kamaldeen Ajibade, clarified on Arise Television that while zoning remains an important tool, it should not override the Constitution, which guarantees citizens everywhere the right to seek elective office.

Supporters of Olawepo‑Hashim have described the party’s stance as a victory for democracy and inclusivity.

Gentle De Yahoo: Nigerian Army Raids Hideout Of Notorious Commander Terrorising Imo, Kills Deputy, Five Others

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that troops of the 34 Brigade, under the 82 Division in Owerri, Imo State, carried out a commando-style raid on the residence of suspected criminal gang leader “Gentle De Yahoo” in Aku, Ihube, Okigwe Local Government Area.

According to the Army, during the operation the troops surrounded Gentle’s building but came under fire from his fighters, who fired at the soldiers from the roof.

“They surrounded his house, went in and Gentle’s boys were firing from the ceiling and our troops returned fire,” the Army said.

When his fighters refused to come down from the roof, the officers set the building ablaze.

“Once the building was set ablaze, two females and three males jumped out of the building and attempted to escape but the army opened fire but there were still three persons left on the roof who refused to come out.”

The raid resulted in several casualties among Gentle De Yahoo’s fighters.

“One of them was his two IC, who eventually jumped out and scaled the wall but the troops fired on him and they killed his two IC. The two females who were with them were also killed, as well as two males,” the Army said.

Troops recovered the corpses of two female and two male fighters, but have not yet confirmed if Gentle De Yahoo himself was among those killed.

“At this time, what I can report is that the soldiers recovered those two corpses of the male fighters but they cannot confirm yet whether Gentle De Yahoo was one of the persons who were confirmed killed in the incident,” the Army said.

Villagers from the community, many of whom have long complained of being terrorized by the gang, confirmed that Gentle’s second‑in‑command was dead.

“We cannot say categorically at this time that he was killed or he found a way to escape. In the fullness of time, the true situation will be confirmed, and we will tell Nigerians the exact situation and confirm whether Gentle De Yahoo has been killed or not.”

The Army emphasized that despite the uncertainty around Gentle’s fate, the operation significantly weakened his gang.

Buhari’s Administration Crushed Naira, Printed N22.7 Trillion – Dogara Alleges

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara has blamed the collapse in the naira’s value on policies adopted by the previous administration, saying that ₦22.7 trillion was printed and injected into the economy under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Dogara described some of the measures taken during that period, such as foreign loans tied to crude oil, dual exchange rates, and unproductive forex allocations, as “voodoo economics.”

He spoke Tuesday in Abuja during the maiden Distinguished Parliamentarian Lecture titled “Navigating Tax Reform in Nigeria: Insights on President Tinubu’s Policies.”

According to Dogara, by the time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, the economic damage was already severe.

He said that excessive currency printing under “Ways and Means” financing had destroyed the naira’s purchasing power.

On the reforms launched under Tinubu, including changes in tax policy, Dogara expressed support, saying they were urgently needed to rescue the economy.

He emphasized that the new tax packages should protect vulnerable people while encouraging investment and fairness.

NYSC Member, Varsity Student Kidnapped, Ransom Set At N50m

Gunmen have abducted a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member and a 300-level student of the University of Jos in Dong, a community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were kidnapped from a residential home on Sunday night, according to Mr. Solomon Dansura, a resident of the area whose home was attacked.

Speaking to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, Dansura said the gunmen stormed his home while the family was preparing to go to bed.

He explained that just three minutes after he retired to his room, he heard suspicious noises from a window and realized that intruders were trying to force their way inside.

“I quickly escaped through the back door to get help. By the time I returned, they had already taken my sister-in-law and her friend,” he said.

Dansura identified one of the victims as his sister-in-law, a corps member currently serving in Bauchi State, who was also preparing for her upcoming wedding.

The second victim is a university student who had been visiting.

Security operatives, including police and military personnel, arrived at the scene after the attackers had already escaped with the victims.

“This is my first experience with kidnapping, and it’s been traumatic,” Dansura said.

He added that the kidnappers contacted the family on Monday morning, demanding a ₦50 million ransom and warning that they expect the money ready by the next time they call.

The incident has heightened fear across Dong community, where locals say abductions have become increasingly common.

District Head Adagwom Kaze Nyam and community leader Nenfort Clifford expressed serious concern over the growing insecurity, urging the government to deploy more security forces to protect lives and property.

Franca Diwa, a prominent women’s leader, and Mildred Bako, a youth activist, warned that Dong could soon become deserted despite its proximity to Jos city, as families are increasingly relocating or selling their homes due to fear of violence.

Meanwhile, Hon. Mark Na’ah, who represents Jos North-West in the Plateau State House of Assembly, visited the area following the abduction.

He disclosed that some individuals previously linked to similar crimes had been arrested but were later released without facing trial.

He condemned the trend and called for urgent reforms in the justice system and improved security in the area.

“We must put an end to this dangerous cycle. Without justice, these criminal acts will continue to threaten the safety and stability of our communities,” he said.

Youths Aiding Bandits Will Be Treated As Terrorists, Governor Ododo Declares

The Kogi State Government has vowed to treat any youth found aiding or abetting bandits as terrorists, as part of intensified efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.

This was disclosed by the State Security Adviser to the Governor, Jerry Omodara, during a security briefing at the palace of the Elegbe of Egbe, Oba Ayodele Irukera, on Tuesday.

The briefing focused on security developments and progress made in curbing crime in Kogi West.

Omodara revealed that intelligence reports have uncovered the involvement of some Okun youths, who allegedly use motorcycles to transport arms, ammunition, and food supplies to bandits hiding in the forests.

“We have identified about seven youths from the area who are under close surveillance. They are believed to be on the payroll of these criminal elements,” he said.

He warned that moving forward, any individual, regardless of age or status, found collaborating with bandits would be treated as one.

“It’s unfortunate that these bandits are now working hand-in-hand with some local residents. Some women are reportedly selling food and drinks to them and even passing sensitive information. Others are in romantic relationships with them,” Omodara lamented.

He also accused certain residents of Yagba West of paying bandits protection money to avoid being kidnapped, saying such actions embolden the criminals and undermine the government’s security efforts.

“We have people who now farm less, while herders cultivate our lands. This dependency is dangerous and unacceptable,” he added.

Omodara alleged that women connected to the bandits have been transporting ammunition from the far north, recruiting local youth to help deliver these weapons into forest hideouts in Okun land, often for small sums of money.

Despite the alarming revelations, the Security Adviser assured residents that the government remains committed to wiping out insurgents across the state.

“Many have been arrested and several others neutralized, including their leaders. We will continue to pursue them relentlessly until our communities are safe, and our people can sleep with both eyes closed.”

He emphasized the government’s resolve to restore peace and ensure farmers can return safely to their fields.

Adeyanju Urges Patience Jonathan To Withdraw Jewellery Theft Case

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has called on former First Lady Patience Jonathan to drop the prolonged legal case against her former domestic staff, following the recent death of one of the accused while in custody.

In an open letter titled “Open Letter by Deji Adeyanju to Dame Patience Jonathan after the death of Her Former Domestic Staff Standing Trial for Theft of Jewellery in Bayelsa Prison,” shared on his X account on Tuesday, Adeyanju highlighted the tragic death of Sahabi Liman, who fell seriously ill in prison.

Adeyanju emphasized that the case has dragged on for over five years without resolution and lamented that “justice delayed so severely becomes no justice at all.”

He warned that the lengthy detention has inflicted immense suffering on the accused and their families, urging that penalties be proportionate to the alleged offence.

The letter states in part:

“Fifteen of your former domestic staff have been on trial since 2019, accused of stealing jewellery. One of them, Sahabi Liman, died in custody after falling seriously ill. This case is no longer just about stolen jewellery, but about people who have endured excessive punishment. Whether guilty or innocent, no one should suffer this long. It is time to reconsider this case with compassion and fairness.”

Adeyanju appealed to the former First Lady, describing her as a mother figure, to discontinue the case to allow the accused the chance to rebuild their lives.

The 15 accused aides, including Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, and others, have been held at the Okaka Custodial Centre in Bayelsa State.

They stand trial for allegedly stealing items valued at approximately ₦200 million, including seven gold bangles, jewellery, five Samsung air conditioners, upholstery chairs, and Samsung flat-screen televisions.

The matter remains before the Bayelsa State High Court.

Trump Files $15 Billion Suit Against New York Times

US President, Donald Trump, has declared plans to sue the New York Times for $15 billion (£11 billion), accusing the newspaper of defamation and libel.

In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump stated, “The New York Times has been allowed to freely lie, smear, and defame me for far too long, and that stops, NOW!”

He criticized the Times for endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, describing the paper as a “mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.”

Trump revealed that the lawsuit would be filed in Florida, a Republican-leaning state. The BBC has contacted the New York Times for comment.

Trump has frequently voiced frustration with media outlets he perceives as left-leaning and hostile toward his presidency.

In another post, he highlighted the Times’ endorsement of Harris, pointing out that it was featured prominently on the front page, a move he called “heretofore UNHEARD OF!”

Trump also accused other media organizations, including ABC News and CBS News, of using “a highly sophisticated system of document and visual alteration” to smear him.

Notably, both ABC and CBS recently settled lawsuits with Trump for multimillion-dollar sums.

In addition, Trump is pursuing legal action against the Wall Street Journal over its coverage of the Epstein scandal.

This is not Trump’s first legal confrontation with the New York Times. In 2023, a federal judge dismissed a $100 million lawsuit Trump filed against the paper and his estranged niece Mary Trump.

That case, originating in 2021, alleged a conspiracy to obtain his tax records and was linked to a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into his finances.

Trump also lost a separate $475 million defamation suit against CNN in 2023, which accused the network of unfairly comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

2027: Obi, Rhodes-Vivour Begin Consultations, Meet Afenifere Faction In Lagos

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday paid a visit to a faction of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, at their office in Lagos.

Obi was joined by the Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement.

They were received by factional leaders, including Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Supo Shonibare, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, and Chief Sola Ebiseni, among others.

In a statement co-signed by Oba Olaitan and Afenifere’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, the group confirmed that the meeting involved extensive discussions on the state of the nation and Obi’s political plans for 2027.

Obi thanked Afenifere for their support during the 2023 election and reaffirmed his commitment to key issues such as restructuring, education, healthcare, rural development, and full employment.

“There were wide discussions ranging from Peter Obi’s candidacy in the 2027 presidential elections to the state of the nation, including harassment of opposition voices, threats to democracy, the economic crisis, and governance costs,” the statement said.

Afenifere’s leaders restated their support for equity, justice, and national prosperity.

They expressed appreciation for Obi’s alignment with their values and voiced concern over the shrinking democratic space in Nigeria.

The meeting wrapped up with both parties pledging further collaboration and continued engagement.

Afenifere, originally founded in the 1950s under the leadership of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has long been a key voice in Yoruba and national politics, known for its progressive ideals and advocacy for federalism.

However, deep divisions have plagued the group in recent years. One faction, led by the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, backed Peter Obi during the 2023 elections.

The other, under Pa Reuben Fasoranti, supported President Bola Tinubu.

Tensions heightened after the election, with Adebanjo’s group insisting that Obi won, a claim Fasoranti dismissed as illegitimate.

By 2025, the rift had solidified, with both factions ruling out reconciliation.

President Tinubu Returns To Abuja After Vacation In France

President Bola Tinubu returned to Abuja on Tuesday evening following a portion of his annual leave spent in France.

His presidential jet landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 6:45 pm, where he was warmly welcomed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, and other top government officials.

Tinubu departed Nigeria on September 4, 2025, initially planning to divide his vacation between France and the United Kingdom.

However, he ultimately completed the leave solely in France.

While in Paris, the President held a private luncheon with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.

The two leaders discussed bilateral relations, reviewing key areas for strategic cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties for mutual prosperity and global stability.

This marks Tinubu’s seventh visit to Paris since taking office in May 2023, and his first since attending the BRICS summit in Brazil in July, and the TICAD9 conference in Japan in August.

Within the first nine months of 2025, President Tinubu has made 15 international trips to 11 different countries.

These visits have included a mix of high-profile summits, bilateral meetings, inaugurations, and official holidays.

His year began with a January 6 trip to Accra, Ghana, to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7.

Shortly after, from January 12 to 16, Tinubu was in the United Arab Emirates for the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit, where he engaged Gulf investors and officials on trade and energy partnerships.

In late January, he traveled to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to participate in the Africa Heads of State Energy Summit.

February saw a visit to France before attending the 37th African Union Summit in Ethiopia, where he joined fellow African leaders in discussing regional security, climate resilience, and continental trade integration under the AfCFTA.

From April 2 to 21, Tinubu undertook a two-week working visit to France and the United Kingdom.

In mid-May, he traveled to Vatican City to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.

June and July featured a historic state visit to Saint Lucia, where Tinubu addressed CARICOM leaders, followed by his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In August, he attended the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan, where he promoted Nigeria’s investment opportunities and discussed maritime security and digital infrastructure with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

During this period, Tinubu made two visits to the UAE, stopping over in Dubai in August.

His September itinerary included working vacations to the UK and France, marking his third trip to Paris and second to London this year.
