Anambra First Lady Demands Apology From Ekwunife, Challenges Her To Paternity Tests, Oath Of Fidelity

The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has engaged in a public dispute with Senator Uche Ekwunife, the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate, over what she described as “malicious and unfounded allegations” targeting her family.

In a statement released on Saturday, Dr. Soludo refused to stoop to what she called Ekwunife’s “fabrications” but issued a stern warning that legal proceedings would commence if the senator did not retract her claims and issue a formal apology within 72 hours.

Further intensifying the feud, Dr. Soludo challenged Ekwunife to a public oath-taking ceremony and proposed DNA tests to settle the questions arising during the heated campaign.

The confrontation stemmed from a viral video circulating since Tuesday, in which Ekwunife accused Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife of having ties to the administration of the late Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju between 1999 and 2003.

The senator’s comments were also a response to doubts raised about her academic qualifications.

The ongoing battle of words has escalated tensions in the already charged Anambra gubernatorial race, where candidates’ credentials and personal lives have repeatedly come under scrutiny, particularly between the APC and the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Dr. Soludo firmly rejected the allegations and demanded evidence to back them up.

“To clarify, let me state three verifiable facts: I have never worked for anyone; I have always been a professional and entrepreneur throughout my adult life; I have never met Dr. Mbadinuju, may he rest in peace; and in my 55 years, I have known only one man — Chukwuma Soludo,” she declared.

The First Lady also extended a challenge to Ekwunife, saying, “Since you claim to be a converted Catholic, I invite you to join me in swearing an oath of fidelity and chastity at any Cathedral before the Blessed Sacrament. I will take this oath alongside my children, affirming that I have known only one man—my husband.”

Additionally, she proposed that both families submit to DNA testing at three reputable London hospitals, assuring that she would cover all expenses.

“As a businesswoman, I will pay for your family’s travel and the tests. If it is confirmed that your husband is the biological father of all your children, I will personally congratulate you with a cash reward. My family is prepared to undergo this test at any time you choose,” she stated.

Dr. Soludo concluded her statement by urging Ekwunife to withdraw her accusations and apologize unreservedly within 72 hours, warning that legal counsel has already been engaged to pursue justice.

In response, Senator Ekwunife released her own statement on Saturday, describing her remarks as “friendly advice” to Mrs. Soludo.

She maintained, “Mrs. Soludo owes me no explanation regarding private family matters. If my statement has caused her discomfort, she owes an explanation to her husband, not to me.”

Ekwunife further dismissed the call for DNA tests, stating, “My personal affairs are not relevant here. She should focus on addressing her family issues rather than dragging me into them.”

The senator ended by reaffirming her commitment to improving Anambra State.

“My determination to positively contribute and rescue Anambra from misgovernance remains firm and undeterred.”

EPL: Arsenal Secure Convincing 3-0 Victory Over Nottingham Forest

Arsenal cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, strengthening their position among the Premier League’s top contenders.

The opener came in the 32nd minute when Martín Zubimendi unleashed a powerful volley from distance, giving the Gunners the lead.

Just after the break, Arsenal doubled their advantage through Viktor Gyökeres, who calmly finished a precise pass from Eberechi Eze in the 46th minute.

Zubimendi then wrapped up the scoring with a well-placed header in the 79th minute, sealing all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The home team had to make an early substitution as captain Martin Ødegaard exited with a shoulder injury following a heavy fall.

Despite missing key players like Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, and Kai Havertz, Arsenal’s depth and composure controlled the game, keeping Forest largely ineffective.

Nottingham Forest, managed by Ange Postecoglou, who took charge only this week, struggled to impose their trademark attacking style.

The visitors found it tough to create chances and were repeatedly exposed by Arsenal’s fluid movement.

Postecoglou will likely see this result as a clear sign of the challenges ahead as he seeks to reshape the team.

With the win, Arsenal climb to the top of the Premier League table, reinforcing their title ambitions.

Meanwhile, Forest’s poor away form continues, leaving them close to the relegation zone.

JUST IN: Russia Announces Capture Of New Village In Ukraine

Russia has declared it seized control of a village in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, an area Moscow’s forces reportedly reached in early July.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, their troops took over Novomykolaivka, a village near the Donetsk region, currently a hotspot of intense fighting.

However, AFP has not been able to independently verify this claim.

Ukrainian military analysts operating DeepState, an online battlefield monitoring tool, maintain that the village remains under Kyiv’s control.

Russian forces, better equipped and significantly larger in number, have been conducting ongoing offensives across Ukraine’s eastern front, steadily making territorial gains.

At the end of August, Ukraine admitted for the first time that Russian troops had entered the Dnipropetrovsk region, where Moscow had announced advances earlier that month.

Currently, Russian forces occupy roughly 20% of Ukrainian land.

The Kremlin insists Ukraine must withdraw from the eastern Donbas region before any peace talks can resume, a demand Kyiv has firmly rejected.

Notably, the Dnipropetrovsk region is not among the five Ukrainian regions, Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea, that Russia has officially claimed as part of its territory.

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of aiming to “occupy all of Ukraine,” warning that Moscow would not halt its campaign even if Kyiv conceded territory.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin announced on Friday that peace negotiations remain on hold after multiple unsuccessful attempts to resolve the war diplomatically since Russia’s large-scale invasion began in February 2022.

In a recent incident, Russian shelling struck the town of Kostyantynivka in Donetsk, killing three people, according to Ukrainian regional prosecutors.

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a significant resolution that calls for an “irreversible path” toward the creation of an independent Palestinian state.

The resolution, known as the New York Declaration, was co-sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, and passed on Friday with 142 countries voting in favour, 10 against, and 12 abstaining.

It outlines a multi-pronged framework aimed at ending the ongoing war in Gaza, securing the release of hostages, disarming Hamas, halting Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, and advancing full UN membership for Palestine.

Among the 10 countries that opposed the resolution were Israel, the United States, Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga.

Those that abstained included Albania, Cameroon, Czech Republic, Congo, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji, Guatemala, North Macedonia, Moldova, Samoa and South Sudan.

Palestine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs hailed the vote as “a resounding affirmation of the international community’s support for justice and peace.”

In sharp contrast, Israel rejected the resolution, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterating that “there will be no Palestinian state.”

Israel’s UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, dismissed the outcome as “a political circus detached from reality.”

The United States, a long-time ally of Israel, also condemned the resolution, calling it “counterproductive” and arguing that it undermines diplomatic efforts while allegedly rewarding militant groups like Hamas.

The resolution comes amid renewed hostilities between Israel and Hamas, continued Israeli airstrikes on Gaza and the announcement of fresh settlement plans in the West Bank, developments that have deepened global concerns about the feasibility of a two-state solution.

A follow-up summit co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia is scheduled for September 22 in New York, where several European countries are expected to consider formally recognising a Palestinian state.

Nigeria was among the 142 countries that voted in favour of the resolution, aligning with its traditional foreign policy stance in support of a peaceful two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

While the resolution is non-binding, it reflects a growing international consensus and mounting impatience especially among developing nations over the prolonged lack of progress in peace negotiations.

Siminalayi Fubara: Preparing For A Crucial Return To Office

As the six-month state of emergency imposed on Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu in March 2025 draws to a close on Thursday, September 18, all eyes are on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Ordu and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) all of whom are expected to return to office.

This pending return marks a significant turning point, not only for Fubara but for the political future of Rivers State.

The controversial suspension of the state’s elected leadership and the imposition of emergency rule, ostensibly to avert a breakdown of law and order, remains deeply contested.

Critics argue that no clear evidence of such unrest existed at the time, and many in Rivers and beyond viewed the move as excessive and politically motivated.

As the state prepares for this transition, the path ahead for Governor Fubara is anything but straightforward.

Fubara’s return will be fraught with challenges, particularly due to the entrenched influence of his political predecessor and rival, Nyesom Wike.

Despite a publicized truce between the two, Wike’s grip on Rivers politics remains firm, strengthened further by his party’s control of the recent local government elections on August 30, 2025.

In this new reality, Fubara reenters office with diminished political leverage, surrounded by lawmakers and powerbrokers aligned with Wike.

His authority as governor may be constitutionally intact, but the political machinery around him is not in his favour.

In light of these dynamics, two schools of thought have emerged on what Fubara should do:

1. Play Along for Peace:
One view suggests Fubara should accept his limited authority and work within the political structure dominated by Wike’s allies.

This approach, advocates argue, would ensure peace and stability in the state, aligning with Fubara’s longstanding calls for unity.

2. Assert His Authority:
A more assertive perspective holds that Fubara must reclaim his leadership by standing firm on constitutional grounds.

Abdicating or playing a passive role, this group warns, could render his governorship meaningless and further weaken the democratic process in Rivers.

Each option carries significant risks and consequences for Fubara’s career, for governance in the state and for the broader principle of democratic integrity.

While these political debates rage on, the ultimate question remains: What is best for the people of Rivers State?

Governance should never be reduced to a tug-of-war between political heavyweights.

The office of governor exists not for personal power plays but for delivering service, ensuring development, and upholding the constitution.

Unfortunately, Nigeria’s political culture often elevates personalities over the rule of law, substituting legal processes with so-called “political solutions” that weaken institutions and breed further crises.

If Fubara is to succeed and be remembered positively, he must resist becoming a ceremonial figurehead.

Instead, he should embrace the full weight and responsibilities of his office, grounded in the constitutional provisions that legitimize his leadership.

This may mean confronting uncomfortable truths and making bold decisions, but it is also the path that will earn him the respect of Rivers people and secure his place in history.

Drama As Hilda Baci’s Giant Jollof Pot Collapses During Guinness World Record Attempt

Tension gripped spectators on Friday night after a dramatic incident unfolded during celebrity chef Hilda Baci’s attempt to cook the world’s largest pot of Nigerian Jollof rice.

The event, tagged “Gino World Jollof Festival with Hilda Baci”, was held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos and attracted thousands of fans, celebrities, and curious onlookers.

However, the atmosphere turned chaotic when the giant custom-built pot collapsed during the weighing process.

According to organizers, the massive pot, measuring six metres wide and six metres tall, with a total capacity of 22,619 litres, was being hoisted by a crane onto an industrial scale for official verification when it gave way under its own weight.

The collapse triggered panic among attendees, with viral videos capturing the moment on social media.

Earlier in the day, Hilda had announced that over 20,000 participants had registered for the free event.

Long queues formed outside the venue as people scrambled to confirm their registrations, while security personnel struggled to manage the surging crowd.

Originally, Baci had planned to use 5,000kg of raw basmati rice (about 250 bags) for the record attempt.

However, citing logistical issues with weighing, she scaled it down to 4,000kg (around 200 bags).

Despite the setback, her team remains confident that the attempt could still qualify for Guinness World Records recognition.

“We are reviewing the footage and the process. Safety was our priority, and the record attempt will proceed for certification,” a spokesperson said.

The high-profile event saw appearances from Nigerian entertainment heavyweights including actress Funke Akindele and rapper Falz, further boosting its media coverage.

Hilda Baci became a household name in 2023 after smashing the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon, clocking over 93 hours of continuous cooking in Lagos.

Her rise to fame earned her national acclaim and international attention.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Guinness officials will certify the latest attempt, but Baci’s team and supporters remain hopeful.

Four Rescued As Three Storey Building Collapses In Lagos

A three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night in the Yaba area of Lagos State, leaving several people trapped under the debris.

The incident occurred at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, and was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

According to the agency, four adult males were rescued alive from the rubble and have been taken to the hospital for treatment. However, the exact number of people still trapped remains unknown.

“While eyewitness accounts vary, with some saying six people were trapped and others reporting five, emergency responders have so far rescued four adult males alive and taken them to the hospital for treatment,” NEMA said via its official X handle.

Rescue efforts are being coordinated by teams from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other emergency response agencies.

“The search and rescue operation is continuing into the night, with responders assuring that no effort will be spared to save lives,” the agency added.

The collapse is the latest in a series of building failures in Lagos, where such incidents are often linked to substandard construction materials, poor engineering practices, and weak regulatory oversight.

Authorities have cordoned off the site to ensure safety while operations continue.
