Osun Monarch Sentenced To Over Four Years In U.S Prison For COVID-19 Loan Fraud

The Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Olugbenga Oloyede, has been sentenced to 56 months in prison in the United States for orchestrating a multi-million-dollar COVID-19 relief fraud scheme.

U.S. District Judge Christopher A. Boyko handed down the sentence on August 26, 2025, in Ohio.

In addition to his prison term, the 62-year-old monarch, who holds dual citizenship in Nigeria and the U.S, was ordered to serve three years of supervised release and to pay $4.4 million in restitution.

Oloyede also forfeited his home in Medina, Ohio, which was purchased with fraud proceeds, along with $96,006.89 in cash seized during the investigation.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Oloyede conspired with Edward Oluwasanmi, 62, to exploit federal emergency loan programs set up under the CARES Act to support small businesses during the pandemic.

Between April 2020 and February 2022, the duo submitted dozens of fraudulent loan applications to the U.S Small Business Administration (SBA), using fabricated information to obtain Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL).

Both men pleaded guilty in April to wire fraud and tax fraud charges after prosecutors revealed the extent of the scheme, which saw over $4.2 million in pandemic relief funds fraudulently obtained.

Oloyede, a tax preparer by profession, ran multiple businesses and a nonprofit organization, while Oluwasanmi operated three business entities.

The U.S Attorney’s Office said Oloyede was responsible for around $1.7 million in fraudulent loans tied to his businesses, while Oluwasanmi received $1.2 million.

Investigators further revealed that Oloyede expanded the scam by filing fake loan applications in the names of some of his tax clients and their businesses, taking a 15-20% cut as a “processing fee.” None of that income was reported on his tax returns.

The fraudulent funds were used to buy land, construct a home, and purchase a luxury car, authorities said.

In total, Oloyede was responsible for 38 fraudulent SBA loan applications, resulting in $4.2 million being disbursed.

His co-conspirator, Oluwasanmi, was sentenced in July to 27 months in prison, ordered to repay over $1.2 million and forfeit assets including a commercial property and over $600,000 in bank accounts linked to the fraud.

The case was part of a broader investigation into pandemic-related financial crimes and was jointly handled by the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General, the FBI Cleveland Division, and the IRS Criminal Investigation Unit, under the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee Fraud Task Force.

Prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Edward D. Brydle and James L. Morford.

President’s Son Convicted Of Selling State-Owned Aircraft

A son of Equatorial Guinea’s long-serving president has been convicted of illegally selling a plane that belonged to the country’s national airline, according to court officials.

Ruslan Obiang Nsue, 50, a former director of Ceiba Intercontinental, the national carrier, was found guilty of selling an ATR 72-500 aircraft to a company in Spain and keeping the proceeds.

The verdict was delivered by the country’s Supreme Court.

Speaking to reporters via WhatsApp, Hilario Mitogo, director of press for the Supreme Court, said Obiang Nsue faces a six-year prison sentence unless he reimburses the state.

To avoid jail time, the court ordered him to repay approximately $255,000 to Ceiba Intercontinental and also cover additional fines and damages to the government.

Obiang Nsue, who has also held the role of secretary of state for sports and youth, was placed under house arrest in 2023 by his half-brother, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the country’s vice-president and another son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled the oil-rich Central African nation for over four decades.

Though found guilty of illegally selling the aircraft, Obiang Nsue was acquitted of separate charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.

This case is the latest in a series of corruption scandals involving members of the presidential family.

Notably, in 2021, a French court convicted Obiang Mangue of embezzling public funds, handing him a suspended sentence and ordering him to pay a $35 million fine.

JUST IN: Police Inspector Kills Army Officer At Checkpoint

Tensions are high in Bauchi State following a deadly altercation between personnel of the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Army that resulted in the death of a senior army officer during a routine operation.

The incident occurred at about 7:50 p.m. on August 25 in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area, when soldiers of the 33 Artillery Brigade intercepted a truck suspected of conveying illegally mined solid minerals.

The truck, with registration number Gombe 676 BLG, was reportedly being escorted by Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, a mobile police officer.

According to reports shared by counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the truck initially refused to comply with orders to stop, prompting Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Ali Haruna and his men to give chase on motorcycles.

When the soldiers finally caught up with the vehicle, Inspector Ibrahim allegedly opened fire and shot Haruna in the abdomen.

“The soldiers immediately overpowered the policeman and disarmed him, while the injured officer was rushed to Gombe Specialist Hospital,” Makama wrote.

“Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.”

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene during the confusion that followed.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the truck was transporting illegally mined minerals from Yalo community in Alkaleri LGA.

Inspector Ibrahim, sources claim, was offering unauthorized escort services, a violation of both police protocol and mining regulations.

Security analysts have described the incident as deeply troubling, citing the driver’s refusal to stop, the fatal shooting, and the subsequent escape as signs that there may be more to the story.

Many are calling for a full investigation into both the origin of the minerals and the involvement of security personnel.

In a bid to avoid further escalation, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police met with Brigadier General U.J. Simon, Commander of the 33 Artillery Brigade.

Both security chiefs are reportedly working together to ease inter-agency tensions and ensure a thorough, transparent probe.

Ganduje Faces New Probe Over Alleged Illegal Sale Of Public Property

Former Kano State Governor and ex-APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is under a fresh investigation over the alleged illegal sale of a valuable state-owned facility, the Nigerian Meat and Allied Products (NIMAP) Abattoir.

The abattoir, located in the Chalawa Industrial Area and established during the administration of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was intended to boost the state’s economy by generating revenue and creating employment.

However, the current administration accuses Ganduje’s government of unlawfully auctioning off the multi-million naira facility for personal gain.

To investigate the matter, the Kano State Government has set up an 11-member panel chaired by Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado, former head of the state’s Anti-Corruption Agency.

The panel’s mandate is to recover misappropriated assets and recommend sanctions for anyone found guilty.

Inaugurating the committee at the Cabinet Office, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Umar Faruq Ibrahim, who represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, stressed that protecting public property is a priority.

He described the alleged transaction as a “selfish act” and assured the public that the matter would be pursued without bias.

“This government has a duty to recover critical public infrastructure wrongly sold off for personal interest,” the SSG said.

Responding, the panel chairman, Rimin-Gado, expressed confidence in the committee’s members and pledged to carry out the assignment with diligence and integrity.

The committee is expected to submit its report within three weeks.

Attempt To Stop Rivers LG Election Fails In Court

The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has dismissed an ex parte motion seeking to halt the local government elections scheduled for August 30, 2025.

Presiding over the matter, Justice Stephen Jumbo ruled that the application, filed by Port Harcourt-based lawyer Williams Abayomi-Stanley, lacked merit.

As a result, the court allowed the elections to proceed as planned.

Abayomi-Stanley had filed the suit against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and its Chairman, challenging the legality of appointments to RSIEC and seeking clarification on constitutional provisions regarding such powers.

Although the judge dismissed the motion for an interim injunction, he granted a separate request for substituted service, allowing the claimant to serve legal documents on President Tinubu and the Attorney General through alternative means.

The case was adjourned to September 10, 2025 for hearing on the substantive suit.

Speaking to journalists after the hearing, the claimant’s counsel, Godsent Elewa, said the suit aimed to clarify whether the President has constitutional authority to appoint RSIEC officials responsible for conducting local government elections in the state.

“My client is a constitutional lawyer and an indigene of Rivers State. He seeks interpretation of Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the RSIEC Law No. 12 of 2018, as well as Sections 197, 198, and 200 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended,” Elewa said.

Despite the court’s refusal to stop the polls, Elewa expressed satisfaction that the court granted the motion for substituted service, allowing the case to proceed.

“We filed two motions: one to restrain the conduct of the elections, which the court dismissed, and another for substituted service on the President and the Attorney General, which was granted,” he added.
