Anambra Assembly Member Dumps Labour Party

A serving member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Henry Mbachu, has officially left the Labour Party (LP) and joined the Young Progressive Party (YPP) in a move that is being seen as politically significant ahead of the November 8 governorship election in the state.

Mbachu, who represents Awka South Constituency 1, announced his defection via a video broadcast, citing alignment with the vision and policy direction of the YPP’s gubernatorial candidate, Sir Paul Chukwuma, as the primary reason for his decision.

“After careful consideration, I have found that the YPP’s manifesto and candidate better align with my legislative agenda and the aspirations of my constituents,” Mbachu said.

He expressed strong support for Chukwuma, describing him as a youth-friendly candidate with a clear development plan for Anambra State.

According to the lawmaker, the YPP candidate offers a practical and visionary blueprint that resonates with his own political goals and the needs of the people of Awka and Okpuno.

“His plans to transform Anambra from a consumption-based to a production-driven economy, and build industries across the state, are unmatched,” Mbachu stated.

Mbachu further assured his constituents that his decision was made in their best interest and stressed that the November poll is an opportunity to elect a leader with a realistic development agenda.

“This isn’t just about switching parties. It’s about aligning with someone who has the ideas and integrity to truly develop Anambra,” he added.

He also disclosed that Chukwuma has committed to prioritizing his constituency in future state projects.

“He has assured me that Awka and Okpuno will receive preferential consideration in employment and government projects, especially in any new facilities built in the area,” Mbachu revealed.

27 Dead As Boat Capsizes In Niger State

At least 27 people have died in a tragic boat accident that occurred on Tuesday along the Malale–Kainji Lake route in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The wooden boat, which had 138 passengers on board, capsized at around 11:49 am in the Shagunu–Dunga stretch of Kainji Lake.

Rescue teams from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) arrived at the scene around 1:33 pm and were able to save 46 men, 58 women and an undisclosed number of children, many aided by life jackets.

So far, 27 bodies have been recovered, eight on Monday and 19 more on Tuesday, according to Akapo Adeboye, Manager of NIWA’s Niger-Kwara Area Office.

“The boat has been removed from the water, but rescue efforts are ongoing,” Adeboye confirmed.

The search and rescue operation is being led by NIWA’s New Bussa Substation, with support from River Marshalls, Nigerian Shipowners Forum on Waterways (NIGSBOFWA), security personnel, and local community leaders. Authorities say the coordinated effort is helping improve water safety in the region.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of fatal boat accidents across Nigeria.

In August 2025, more than 40 people went missing after a boat carrying over 50 passengers to a market capsized in Sokoto State. Only 10 survivors were rescued.

In August 2024, 16 farmers drowned when their canoe capsized en route to rice fields in Sokoto.

On July 29, 2024, six girls drowned in Jigawa State after a boat taking them home from farm work sank midstream.

Just two days earlier, another accident in central Niger State claimed at least 13 lives.

2027: Nigerian Politics Riddled With Betrayals – Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described Nigeria’s political landscape as one plagued by betrayal and dishonesty.

Speaking in Benin City at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and ex-Deputy Governor of Edo State, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, Jonathan praised Ogiadomhe for his unwavering loyalty during his time in office.

“Mike is one of the few people who stood by me when I became president,” Jonathan said.

“In Nigerian politics, it’s rare to find someone who says the same thing in the morning and evening. Many politicians say one thing now and something entirely different later.”

Recalling the 2015 elections, Jonathan noted that he experienced numerous betrayals but emphasized that Ogiadomhe was a rare exception, someone whose word was dependable.

Representing Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa commended Ogiadomhe’s legacy, stating that the developmental foundation he laid still guides governance in the state.

Also speaking at the event, former Edo Governor Lucky Igbinedion praised Ogiadomhe’s reliability, saying he trusted him completely to handle state matters in his absence.

Senator and ex-governor Adams Oshiomhole also honored the celebrant, noting Ogiadomhe’s steadfast loyalty to Jonathan, adding, “He never hid where his allegiance was.”

Ogiadomhe’s wife, Louisa, was equally recognized for her strong support throughout his political career.

The event drew a high-profile audience, including former governors Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, and various former deputy governors.

Also in attendance were Edo State Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa, Speaker of the State Assembly Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.

2027: Kwankwaso Still Open To Joining APC – Rep Member Jibrin

Abdulmumin Jibrin, a member of the House of Representatives and chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has revealed that former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is still open to joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Jibrin emphasized that the political door remains open for discussions between Kwankwaso and President Bola Tinubu’s camp.

“As far as that [joining APC] is concerned, he has always maintained that his doors are open. Our doors are open for discussions. Everything is a possibility,” Jibrin said.

Talks of Kwankwaso, who came fourth in the 2023 presidential election, joining the APC have resurfaced in political circles.

Although the momentum behind such a move appeared to have slowed down, Jibrin clarified that no final decision has been made.

“The door is not closed. He has never said it is closed,” he stated.

When asked about the delays or obstacles, Jibrin pointed to internal power dynamics within the APC, especially in Kano State.

“Some vested interests within the APC may not want us to come in because of personal political ambitions, like wanting to be governor, for example.”

He further emphasized the strength of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, describing it as a formidable political force that cannot be ignored in national politics.

Jibrin, who has been seen visiting President Tinubu several times, declined to confirm whether he personally would be leaving NNPP for the APC.

“I keep saying everything is a possibility,” he said, adding that he does not require Kwankwaso’s permission to switch parties.

“At my age, I think I’m old enough to make decisions for myself.”

In the 2023 presidential election, Kwankwaso polled 1,496,687 votes, trailing behind Tinubu (8,794,726), Atiku Abubakar (6,984,520) and Peter Obi (6,101,533).

JUST IN: Police Summon El-Rufai, Other ADC Leaders

The Kaduna State Police Command has summoned former governor Nasir El-Rufai and key members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over allegations of criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief and causing grievous harm.

The invitation was issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigation, Zubairu Abdullahi, and involves several prominent figures within the ADC’s Kaduna chapter.

According to the police letter, those expected to appear include:

  • Mallam Nasir El-Rufai
  • Bashir Saidu
  • Ja’afaru Sani (ADC North-West Chairman)
  • Ubaidullah Mohammed (aka Mikiya 30)
  • Nasiru Maikano
  • Aminu Abita
  • Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (aka Mikiya)

The police request that all named individuals report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on September 8, 2025, to respond to allegations made by unnamed complainants.

The letter stated:

“This department is currently investigating the above-mentioned case involving the following members of your party. You are requested to come along with them to SCID to clarify allegations reported against them by the complainants on 8th September 2025.”

However, the ADC leaders have claimed they have not been officially served with the police invitation.

According to them, they only became aware of the matter through posts circulating on social media.

The development follows recent tensions surrounding ADC political gatherings in the state, which authorities claim were held without proper clearance.

El-Rufai and his allies have, however, condemned the actions of security agencies as politically motivated.

Tinubu Hints At Creation Of State Police

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that his administration is actively considering the creation of a state police system to better address Nigeria’s escalating security concerns.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation of Katsina elders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the urgency of localizing security efforts.

He also disclosed plans to further equip forest guards recently deployed in the North West, particularly in Katsina State, a region grappling with repeated bandit attacks.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President emphasized the importance of tailoring security responses to local contexts.

“Security outfits that understand the terrain, respect the culture, and can connect with communities are essential,” Tinubu said, while condemning the politicisation of the state police proposal.

The President admitted that Nigeria’s porous borders and inherited structural weaknesses have contributed to insecurity, but stressed that his government is committed to fixing the problem.

“We must defeat insecurity. We have approved the purchase of more drones and instructed security agencies to reassess and energize their strategies,” he added.

Tinubu said he is now receiving daily reports on operations in Katsina, and that discussions on the establishment of state police are ongoing. He confirmed a holistic review is underway to ensure sustainable security reform.

“I am reviewing all aspects of our national security. I have to create a state police,” he said.

“Our children, our people, places of worship, and public spaces must be protected. We will not be intimidated.”

The President also assured the visiting elders that efforts are in place to immortalize former President Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledging his legacy.

While Tinubu appears ready to move forward, the idea of state police remains a divisive issue within the National Economic Council (NEC).

Despite widespread calls for localized policing, the NEC has repeatedly deferred formal discussions.

In April, Vice President Kashim Shettima chaired a lengthy meeting with governors and ministers, but the issue of state police was not addressed due to time constraints.

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, speaking after the meeting, explained:

“State police was on our agenda, but we couldn’t get to it because of the many presentations we had. It will be fully discussed at our next meeting.”

This marks the third time deliberations on state police have been postponed, despite mounting insecurity across the country.

In December last year, all 36 states submitted their positions, with most supporting the move. Yet, formal debate was again delayed.

Earlier in February, Kaduna State’s Deputy Governor Dr. Hadiza Balarabe confirmed another deferral after an NEC session.

The proposal for state policing has been on the table since early 2024 when Tinubu and state governors convened to address growing violence nationwide.

According to the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, the plan is still in its early stages and would require further consensus-building among stakeholders.

NYSC Resumes Arrears Payment After Two-Month Delay

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed the payment of arrears to corps members after a two-month delay, with the first round of disbursements taking place on Wednesday, September 3.

This payment marks the first since June 3 and reflects the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance introduced by the Federal Government earlier this year.

On April 5, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had assured both serving and recently passed-out corps members that they would receive the arrears once funds were made available.

“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details,” Nafiu stated during the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja.

His assurance followed the government’s announcement of the new ₦77,000 allowance as part of its economic relief initiatives for Nigerian youths amid rising living costs.

A former corps member who spoke to DAILY GAZETTE anonymously confirmed receipt of the payment.

“After waiting two months, I honestly didn’t expect the alert anymore. But it’s not just about the money, it’s about knowing that our service actually matters,” they said.

The arrears reportedly cover a nine-month period from July 2024 to March 2025 and the delay had led to widespread frustration among corps members.

Brigadier General Nafiu reiterated the government’s commitment to youth welfare, noting that the administration remains “responsible and responsive” to the needs of Nigerians.

80 Million Nigerian Youth Unemployed, 1,500 Schools Shut In Two Years Due To Insecurity

A new report by Plan International Nigeria, an independent humanitarian non-profit, has revealed alarming statistics about the state of youth in Nigeria, stating that nearly 80 million young Nigerians are currently unemployed, while over 1,500 schools have been forced to shut down in the past two years due to growing insecurity.

The report, titled “State of the Nigerian Youth Report 2025,” was unveiled during the Nigerian Youth Dialogue held in Abuja to mark International Youth Day and was presented by Jonathan Abakpa, Advocacy and Youth Programme Officer at Plan International Nigeria.

The event was organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Youth in Parliament.

The report paints a grim picture of wasted potential in a nation where over 60 percent of the population is under the age of 30.

“This is more than a statistic; it reflects shattered dreams and wasted talent,” Abakpa said.

“The desperation among young people is fueling irregular migration, cybercrime, and other dangerous coping strategies.”

According to the report, insecurity and systemic failures are crippling Nigeria’s development.

1.7 million graduates leave tertiary institutions annually with little or no job opportunities.

Over 1 million children are currently out of school due to school closures.

More than 600,000 people have been killed and 2.2 million kidnapped in recent years, a significant number of them young people.

77,000 lives have been lost to tribal conflicts in the last five years.

2.6 million people, mostly from farming communities, have been displaced due to violence.

With farmers unable to access their land, UNICEF estimates that 25 million Nigerians are at risk of hunger.

Over 82.9 million Nigerians (40.1% of the population) currently live below the poverty line.

“Education, which should be a ladder of opportunity, has been violently taken away from millions of children,” Abakpa stated.

The report warns that without deliberate and urgent intervention, Nigeria risks alienating an entire generation.

It calls for scaled-up job creation initiatives, vocational training and entrepreneurship programmes that are linked to real industry needs, stronger support for innovation and youth-led enterprises.

Despite the dire statistics, the report also emphasizes that Nigerian youth are not just victims, they are innovators, entrepreneurs, and agents of change and deserve targeted support to unleash their potential.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Ayodeji Alao-Akala, Chairman of the House Committee on Youth in Parliament, reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to improving the lives of young Nigerians.

“As a country, we cannot afford to ignore the aspirations of our youth,” Alao-Akala said.

“They are the future of Nigeria, and our responsibility as lawmakers is to create an enabling environment for them to thrive.”

He noted that several bills and motions have already been passed in Parliament aimed at supporting youth development and national progress.

The “State of the Nigerian Youth Report 2025” serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for urgent, coordinated efforts by the government, private sector and development partners to reverse the decline and unlock Nigeria’s demographic dividend.

Governor Mbah Hails NCoS For Talent Discovery, Reformation Initiatives

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has applauded the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for its proactive efforts in reforming inmates through talent discovery and skill-building initiatives, aimed at making them productive members of society upon release.

The governor gave the commendation on Wednesday while flagging off the final match of the month-long Inter-Hostel Football Competition held at the Enugu Custodial Centre.

Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Chief Emeka Ajogwu, Governor Mbah expressed satisfaction with the discipline, hygiene, and reformation programmes being implemented within the custodial facilities across the state.

“The Enugu State Government will continue to support the Nigerian Correctional Service in its mission to transform lives. We want inmates to understand that this process is about love, rehabilitation, and reintegration, not punishment,” he said.

He further praised the NCoS for using sports, especially football, as a positive channel for engaging inmates, discovering talent, and boosting morale.

“This football competition is a step in the right direction. It provides a platform to harness and nurture hidden talents within the correctional facilities,” Mbah added.

Speaking at the event, the Controller-General of NCoS, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, reiterated the Service’s commitment to inmate transformation through engaging activities.

Represented by the Zonal Coordinator for Zone M, Mrs. Prisca Oku, the C-G emphasized the importance of providing platforms for skill and talent development.

“We are focused on productive engagements that equip inmates with skills and confidence to reintegrate successfully into society. Football is one of the tools we are using to unlock potential and inspire a new path for these individuals,” Nwakuche noted.

The Controller of Corrections in Enugu State, Mr. Valins Obizue, thanked the Controller-General for endorsing and supporting the football competition, which he described as a valuable initiative for discovering new sporting talent.

“We hope to see some of these players representing the state or even the country someday. This is why we urge government bodies, corporate sponsors, and philanthropists to continue supporting our reformation programmes,” Obizue said.

Also speaking, the Deputy Controller of Corrections, Enugu Custodial Centre, Mr. Sunday Igwe, expressed appreciation to Rangers International FC for donating branded jerseys to the finalist teams.

“We are proud of what we witnessed today. Football has brought unity and motivation to these inmates, and I’m confident that some of the talents discovered today could go on to join professional clubs,” he added.

In a tightly contested final, Team IDR edged out Team Asylum with a 1-0 victory. M Ward Team secured third place following a series of round-robin matches involving eight hostel teams over the past month.

FRSC Confirms 10 Dead, 7 Vehicles Involved In Enugu Fatal Accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the deaths of 10 persons in two multiple accidents involving seven vehicles along the Ozalla axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The Sector Commander of FRSC Enugu State Command, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, disclosed the details during a press briefing in Enugu on Thursday, describing the incidents as tragic and avoidable.

According to Agbakoba, the two separate accidents occurred on Wednesday at about 9:30 am and 3:45 pm respectively, within the Police Estate and Toll Gate areas of Ozalla.

“As usual, our personnel from the FRSC Ozalla Unit responded swiftly, rescuing over 30 individuals. Some of the victims with serious injuries were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention,” he said.

The first crash involved a trailer, two buses, and a car, affecting 34 people, 22 males, 11 females and one child.

Nine fatalities occurred at the scene, with another victim dying later in the hospital.

10 injuries were recorded (1 male, 9 females).

19 males were rescued unhurt.

The second crash, which occurred later in the afternoon, involved two trailers and a tricycle, with six male victims:

One fatality, one injury, and one male rescued unhurt.

In total, 40 people were involved in both crashes, 10 fatalities, 11 injuries and 20 males rescued without injuries.

Agbakoba attributed the accidents to basic Road Traffic Violations (RTVs), particularly driving against traffic, a dangerous and recurring issue along that axis.

“The Ozalla axis has been notorious for motorists violating traffic rules, especially by taking the wrong lane. Our unit at Ozalla has been consistent in enforcing traffic laws and conducting road safety education in the area,” he stated.

He revealed that three drivers were recently apprehended in August for such violations at the same accident-prone zone.

The Sector Commander appealed for the installation of caution signs in the affected areas, especially since road construction is ongoing along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

“We urge road users to exercise patience and drive with caution in construction zones. A little patience can save lives,” he added.
