Obi Labels FG’s N142bn Bus Terminal Project A ‘Misplaced Priority’

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticized the Federal Government’s decision to spend over ₦142 billion on building bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, calling it a glaring case of “misplaced priorities.”

The project, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 14, aims to construct ultra-modern bus terminals as part of what the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, described as the government’s first direct investment in transport infrastructure outside of road construction.

But in a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Obi condemned the move as irresponsible and reflective of poor leadership judgment.

“The recent announcement that ₦142 billion has been approved for the construction of one bus terminal in each of the six geopolitical zones further affirms the lack of competence, lack of focus, and poor leadership,” Obi wrote.

Drawing a sharp contrast, the former Anambra governor pointed out that Nigeria’s entire 2024 federal allocation for all teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres nationwide is less than ₦100 billion, highlighting what he sees as deeply flawed priorities.

“In the 2024 budget, the combined funding for all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric centres is under ₦100 billion. Yet, the government found it fit to approve ₦142 billion for bus terminals,” Obi said.

He emphasized that healthcare, especially mental health, remains one of the most neglected sectors in Nigeria, despite growing concerns.

Citing a World Health Organization (WHO) report, Obi noted that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health challenges, an issue he believes should command more attention and resources.

Describing the approval as a “tragic irony,” Obi said it illustrates the government’s ongoing failure to invest in critical areas that directly impact the well-being of citizens.

“The difference between success and failure in any nation is how you choose to allocate your scarce resources,” he said.

“Health is a foundational element of development, yet we underfund it, while overspending on less urgent projects.”

No Going Back On November Convention – PDP Governors Dare Wike

Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have drawn a firm line in the sand, declaring their unwavering commitment to the party’s scheduled national convention on November 15, 2025, despite opposition from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Rising from their 7th official meeting in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, the PDP Governors’ Forum issued a communiqué urging party members nationwide to stand united and resist efforts aimed at derailing the convention.

“The Forum reaffirms its full commitment to the resolutions of the 101st NEC meeting of July 2025 regarding the November 15 convention,” the governors stated.

“We urge members to resist all attempts to derail the convention by anti-party forces and to continue to view the PDP as Nigeria’s most viable platform for good governance and national development.”

The meeting, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, also addressed the worsening security situation in the country and what the governors described as the erosion of democratic principles under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Forum accused the APC of deepening hardship and division across the country through “reckless policies” and reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria.

The statement from the governors comes amid rising tension between party loyalists and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who had criticized the PDP’s internal processes and decisions in recent weeks.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 19, Wike openly rejected the South-South caretaker committee set up by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) and insisted that his ally, Chief Dan Orbih, emerged legitimately as National Vice Chairman (South-South) in a congress held in Calabar.

“Our congress was held, and Dan Orbih emerged. If they don’t accept that outcome, then they’re inviting another crisis,” Wike warned.

He further criticized the party’s Acting National Chairman for writing to INEC claiming the congress had been postponed, calling the move unacceptable and a trigger for potential instability within the party.

Wike’s hardline stance deepened divisions within the PDP.

Once aligned with other influential figures in the now-defunct G5 group, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Wike now finds himself increasingly isolated, with many party members accusing him of working against the PDP while serving in an APC-led federal cabinet, a charge he continues to deny.

Wike also rejected the PDP zoning committee led by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, further fueling speculation about a growing rift between him and mainstream PDP leadership.

Despite these internal tensions, the PDP governors remain resolute.

They commended party members for remaining loyal in the face of defections and distractions, affirming their focus on delivering a successful convention in November.

They urged members to avoid divisive narratives and instead channel their energies into rebuilding a stronger opposition capable of returning Nigeria to stability, progress, and inclusive governance.

Former Abia Deputy Governor Joins Labour Party, Declares PDP ‘Closed Shop’

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State, Chief Ude Oko-Chukwu, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Labour Party (LP).

Chukwu announced his defection on Saturday at his hometown in Nkporo, where a large crowd of supporters and political allies gathered to witness what he described as the start of “a new political chapter.”

“All Nkporo people are here today,” he declared during the event.

“The implication is that Nkporo is now in the Labour Party. PDP in Abia State has closed shop as from today.”

Explaining his decision to join the LP, Chukwu lauded the performance of Governor Alex Otti, describing his leadership style as sincere and people-centered.

“You have treated governance as a personal mission,” he told the governor.

“You’ve done well. Today, we can say with pride that we are truly Abians.”

Governor Otti, who was present to welcome the former deputy governor, described Chukwu as a principled man and praised his boldness in making the move.

“You’re a man who deserves respect, and you’ll get it here,” the governor said, assuring that key infrastructure projects in Nkporo, including the already awarded road project, would receive the same attention as those in major cities like Aba and Umuahia.

The defection of Chukwu has triggered a ripple effect.

The Labour Party’s state chairman, Sir Emmanuel Otti, hailed the development as a political awakening for the state, emphasizing that it would open doors to fresh opportunities and greater development for Nkporo and surrounding communities.

The Ohafia Local Government LP chairman, Godwin Kalu echoed similar sentiments, stressing the party’s commitment to unity and progress.

In a dramatic twist, the PDP chairman of Ohafia LGA, Egesi Eze Azu, also announced his defection alongside Chukwu.

Chukwu had resigned from the PDP several weeks earlier, citing “personal reasons,” though many had speculated that his next political move was imminent.

Over 20,000 Lawyers Storm Enugu For 2025 NBA Conference

The city of Enugu has come alive as more than 20,000 legal practitioners, dignitaries, and international guests descend on the Coal City for the 2025 Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which kicks off officially on Sunday.

The weeklong conference promises to be one of the most memorable in recent NBA history, with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo set to chair the opening ceremony, and prominent South African politician Julius Malema delivering the keynote address.

NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, led a symbolic health walk through the city on Saturday morning alongside thousands of lawyers, a show of unity and vitality ahead of the formal proceedings.

“Enugu is ready. We are excited. This city is not just the capital of the South-East; it represents hospitality, beauty and peace. That’s why we moved from Port Harcourt to hold this year’s AGC here.” Osigwe told newsmen.

He added that Malema, who arrived in Lagos ahead of the event, would fly into Enugu on Sunday, while Chief Obasanjo would also be on ground for the opening.

The Enugu State Government has received high praise for its preparation and infrastructure improvements ahead of the NBA’s arrival. Speaking on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the state had long anticipated hosting major events such as the NBA Conference.

“Governor Mbah’s administration has invested in transportation, hospitality, and urban renewal to make Enugu a true destination city,” Onyia explained.

Recent projects include the launch of Enugu Air, the deployment of 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, five newly built modern transport terminals, and the grand reopening of the historic Hotel Presidential.

“These developments weren’t just for this event. They reflect our long-term vision for Enugu as a hub for tourism, business, and national dialogue.” Onyia noted.

Attendees have already begun sharing glowing reviews of the city’s transformation.

Barrister Favour Abraham, who traveled from Minna, Niger State, said her return to Enugu, two decades after first attending an NBA conference there, has been emotional.

“I was here in 2005, and the change is amazing. From the airport, the experience was seamless. CNG buses were ready for us. The city is clean, warm, and welcoming,” she said.

Another participant, Daisy Ovrawah from Delta State, was visiting Enugu for the first time.

“The ride from the airport was smooth. The International Conference Centre is beautiful. I’m really impressed,” she remarked.

Barr. Godswill Onyegbu from Abuja praised the conference’s organization: “Everything is well coordinated — transportation, logistics and the city’s cleanliness all stand out.”

For Magistrate Munirat Suleiman of the Customary Court of Appeal, Abuja, the seamless registration process was a refreshing change.

“Compared to previous conferences, this is the smoothest I’ve seen. It’s been stress-free so far,” she said.

Even royalty weighed in. Highness Rufus Olarewaju Ajayi, who last visited Enugu in 2001 during the Oputa Panel hearings, expressed admiration for the city’s progress.

“I’ve only been here a day, but I’m already impressed with what I’ve seen,” he noted.

The theme of this year’s conference is Stand Out, Stand Tall”.

2027: ADC Coalition Misleading Nigerians, I’m Ready To Run With Obi Again – Baba-Ahmed

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has dismissed the emerging opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as deceptive and incapable of delivering meaningful change to Nigeria.

Speaking on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, Baba-Ahmed said:

“They are deceiving us,” referring to the coalition involving political figures such as Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.

Although Peter Obi, who ran with Baba-Ahmed in the 2023 presidential election, has shown signs of aligning with the ADC coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, Baba-Ahmed expressed his hope that Obi would remain with the Labour Party and seek the presidency again on that platform.

“I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election,” he said.

The economist and political figure also confirmed his willingness to run again as Obi’s running mate in 2027 if circumstances permit.

“If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow… I would appropriately associate with groups and individuals who are like-minded and genuinely committed to restoring Nigeria,” he said.

Pressed further on who he would consider running with in 2027, Baba-Ahmed mentioned two individuals, though only named Obi:

“The first one has not said anything. The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi—until he decides not to.”

Naming Of Terrorism Financiers In Progress – General Musa

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has revealed that the Federal Government is actively tracking individuals and networks financing terrorism in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, Gen. Musa explained that the process of naming and prosecuting terrorism financiers is ongoing, though it faces significant legal and international hurdles.

“The process is on. Just last week, the Attorney-General of the Federation, along with the NFIU, DSS, and NIA, were actively reviewing cases,” Musa said.

“Legal issues and international funding channels are slowing down public disclosure.”

He added that the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has made substantial progress, with arrests already made and prosecutions underway, including individuals linked to the Owo church bombing, who are currently facing trial.

According to security data, Nigeria recorded alarming levels of violence in early 2025.

Over 2,000 people were killed between January and March, while reports from HumAngle Tracker show that at least 635 people died in May alone due to violent attacks across various communities.

General Musa expressed concern over the surge in violence, which he said is significantly worse than in 2024.

He linked the trend to the approaching 2027 general elections, suggesting political motivations behind the attacks.

“Last year, we had the lowest number of deaths. Now, suddenly, violence is spiking again. You can’t rule out political actors possibly backing these criminals to create instability,” he said.

“But the question is: how do you plan to govern people you’re harming? What’s the endgame?”

The Defence Chief reiterated the commitment of the armed forces and security agencies to securing the country and ensuring that those behind terrorism, the perpetrators and their sponsors are held accountable.

Rivers: Ibas Inaugurates Boards Of Seven Agencies, Urges Action On Waste Management

Efforts to tackle the lingering waste disposal crisis in Rivers State may soon see a turnaround, following the formal inauguration of seven key agency boards by the Sole Administrator of the State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.

Leading the list of inaugurated bodies is the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), a critical institution tasked with addressing the state’s mounting sanitation challenges.

During the inauguration ceremony held on Friday evening, Ibas charged the new board members to approach their responsibilities with discipline, innovation, and commitment.

He particularly emphasized the urgency of overhauling the state’s waste management system, warning that poor sanitation poses serious health risks to the public.

“We must move away from the culture of indiscriminate waste disposal,” Ibas said.

“The public should understand that poor sanitation isn’t just unsightly, it’s dangerous.”

The ceremony also saw the swearing-in of board chairpersons and members of six other state agencies, although their names were not disclosed in the official statement.

Ibas made the remarks earlier in the day when he received members of the Senate Committee on Works, who paid him a courtesy visit at the State Government House.

Enugu Police Nab Eight Suspects, Recover Stolen Vehicles In Sweeping Operations

Enugu Police PRO, SP Daniel Ndukwe

In a bold show of force against crime and criminality, the Enugu State Police Command has recorded a series of major breakthroughs in its ongoing crackdown on robbery and car theft syndicates operating within and beyond the state.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police arrested eight suspects and recovered eight stolen or snatched vehicles, alongside other exhibits, during coordinated tactical operations carried out in August.

“These successes, which include the arrest of robbery suspects and the recovery of vehicles and other criminal tools, demonstrate the Command’s unwavering commitment to ridding the State of criminal elements,” the statement read.

The series of operations began yielding results as early as August 8, when the Command’s Crack Tactical Squad arrested three male suspects; Nwafor Chinenye (35), Chidera Ezeoha (32), and Ekete Joseph (41) in connection with an armed robbery at Amokpu-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area.

A motorcycle and a Samsung Galaxy S8 phone, reportedly snatched from victims on August 7, were recovered.

The suspects were caught attempting to sell the stolen items at Ogbeke-Nike. They have already been arraigned and remanded.

Four days later, on August 12, the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad struck again. Acting on intelligence from the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre, operatives arrested Chigozie Ebisike (42) in Ogui, Enugu, and recovered a blue Toyota Corolla linked to a vehicle snatching incident on Rangers Avenue.

Further investigations led to the recovery of two more vehicles, a gold Toyota Sienna and a black Lexus RX 350, along with an array of fake vehicle registration papers, keys, and number plates. Ebisike confessed to being a career car thief.

On August 19, officers attached to the Ozalla Division intercepted a criminal gang operating along the Udi/Ozalla Road.

Somadina Udeh (26) was arrested while his accomplices fled.

In their wake, the police recovered two Toyota Hiace buses, one bearing Delta State plates (ASB 108 YF) and the other Ebonyi State registration (AKL 163 YU).

Udeh confessed to being part of a burglary gang that routinely targeted Enugu shops and ferried stolen goods to Anambra State for resale.

The most recent arrest came on August 21, when the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team apprehended Eze Obinna (44), Jideofor Igwumba (35), and Martina Okwor Ada (49) in connection with a Toyota Kluger (Highlander SUV) stolen on July 21 in Trans-Ekulu.

The SUV had been rebranded and was on the verge of being sold in Awka, Anambra State.

Enugu Police Commissioner, Mamman Bitrus Giwa commended the swift action and diligence of all operatives involved, describing the arrests and recoveries as evidence of the Command’s heightened vigilance and operational effectiveness.

“These arrests are a direct result of our commitment to proactive policing, strong intelligence gathering, and swift action,” he said.

“We will continue to hunt down criminal syndicates and ensure that Enugu remains unsafe for anyone involved in crime.”

He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue partnering with the police by reporting any suspicious activity or individuals in their communities.

While eight suspects are in custody, the Command revealed that several accomplices are still at large, and efforts are ongoing to track them down and recover additional stolen items.

The command pledged that investigations will be thorough and all arrested suspects will face justice.

Enugu: ESWAMA Suspends August Clean-Up Due To NBA Conference

The Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) has announced the cancellation of its scheduled monthly clean-up exercise for August 2025.

The exercise, originally slated for Saturday, August 30, has been called off to accommodate the ongoing Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference being held in the city.

In an official statement released on Thursday, ESWAMA’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Joshua Ozioko, explained that the decision was made to prevent disruptions during the high-profile legal gathering, which has attracted thousands of delegates and dignitaries to Enugu.

“Although the clean-up exercise will not take place as planned, residents are strongly encouraged to uphold cleanliness standards before, during, and after the NBA Conference,” the statement read.

“This is essential in preserving Enugu’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s cleanest states.”

Despite the suspension of the clean-up day, ESWAMA confirmed that enforcement of environmental laws remains in force.

Offences such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse, disposing of waste outside the approved hours (5:00 pm – 9:00 pm), scavenging at dumpsites, and littering from moving vehicles or tricycles will continue to attract penalties.

The agency also reminded residents of their civic duty to pay sanitation levies through the designated e-ticketing agents, noting that non-compliance could result in sanctions.

ESWAMA called on the public to cooperate with sanitation officials and support efforts to keep Enugu clean and environmentally safe throughout the duration of the conference and beyond.
