NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Dangerous Fake Cowbell Milk In Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the discovery of counterfeit Cowbell 12g sachet milk in Nigerian markets.

According to a statement posted on the agency’s website, the fake milk product closely resembles the genuine Cowbell “Our Milk” packaging and branding, including the use of Promasidor Nigeria Ltd’s name, logo, trademark, and even the NAFDAC registration number.

Promasidor, the official manufacturer of Cowbell milk, reported the issue to NAFDAC, confirming that the counterfeit sachets use an outdated packaging design the company stopped using in September 2023.

The company clarified that it has no connection with the fake product.

NAFDAC highlighted several differences to help the public distinguish between the real and fake versions:

  • Genuine Cowbell milk uses the updated “Our Creamy Goodness” PNG artwork.
  • Real batch numbers are laser-printed and positioned within a designated coding area.
  • The sachets are sealed and cut automatically.
  • In contrast, the counterfeit product features older packaging with the “Our Milk” label.
  • Batch numbers are printed using ink and appear in incorrect locations.
  • Manual sealing and cutting were observed, and the contents are suspicious in appearance and quality.

NAFDAC has stressed that consuming this fake milk could be dangerous.

Potential risks include allergic reactions, food poisoning, organ damage, and in extreme cases, death.

Vulnerable groups such as infants, pregnant women and the elderly are particularly at risk.

To tackle the spread, NAFDAC has directed all its zonal and state offices to intensify surveillance and remove the counterfeit products from circulation.

The agency also urged consumers, retailers, and distributors to only source products from licensed suppliers and remain vigilant about food safety.

Consumers are encouraged to report any suspicious food items to NAFDAC through its toll-free number (0800-162-3322), by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng, or via the reporting platforms on the agency’s website.

For any adverse health events related to counterfeit products, reports can also be submitted to pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and warned that the circulation of fake food products would not be tolerated.

Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has etched his name into the history books of Saudi Arabian football, becoming Nigeria’s most successful player to ever compete in the Saudi Pro League.

The 34-year-old forward, who played for Al-Wehda, Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal, has officially been recognized as the ninth all-time top scorer in the league’s history and the highest-ranked Nigerian on the list, with a total of 73 goals.

Data from league statistics confirms Ighalo’s dominant run, highlighting his clinical finishing and consistency throughout his time in the Gulf nation.

No other Nigerian player has come close to matching his goal tally in Saudi Arabia’s top flight.

Ighalo’s standout performances particularly during his tenure at Al-Hilal, one of the region’s most successful clubs, helped the team excel in both domestic and continental competitions.

His prolific record also underscores the growing impact of African footballers in the Middle East’s rapidly expanding football scene.

Beyond his contributions on the pitch, Ighalo has become a symbol of Nigerian football excellence abroad, representing his country with pride and professionalism.

Since launching his professional career, Ighalo has played 474 competitive matches across leagues in Europe, Asia, and Africa, netting 198 goals and recording 32 assists.

His impressive strike rate averaging 0.23 goals per 90 minutes, includes stints in the English Premier League, Chinese Super League and major international tournaments with the Nigerian national team.

Although his playing days in Saudi Arabia may be behind him, Ighalo’s achievements there continue to resonate, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most respected foreign imports and a trailblazer for Nigerian strikers abroad.

Governor Mbah Commissions Rebuilt Hotel Presidential, Vows To Revive Enugu’s Dormant Assets

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has commissioned the newly rebuilt Hotel Presidential, a historic landmark in the state, promising to restore other moribund public assets and transform Enugu into a hub for investment, tourism and leisure.

The commissioning ceremony, which took place on Thursday at the hotel premises in Enugu, marked a symbolic step in Mbah’s broader economic revitalization agenda.

Built under Dr. Michael Okpara’s administration and originally commissioned in 1963, the Hotel Presidential once stood as a beacon of the Eastern Region’s pride, resilience, and economic ambition.

However, the iconic hotel fell into a state of disrepair, remaining moribund for over 15 years due to mismanagement and neglect.

Governor Mbah, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu for their trust in his administration.

He reaffirmed his commitment to reviving the visions of the state’s founding fathers by breathing new life into long-abandoned infrastructure.

“This iconic structure has been transformed into a world-class hospitality facility. Enugu is now open for business. This is part of our audacious plan to position the state as Nigeria’s top destination for living, investment, and tourism,” the governor declared.

Mbah noted that the project aligns with his promise to create employment opportunities, tackle poverty, and convert dormant public assets into engines of economic growth.

Also speaking at the event, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Ugochi Madueke, described Governor Mbah as a “silent achiever” and stated that the revamped Hotel Presidential would significantly boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and enhance its global image.

NSCDC Nabs Five Suspects For Vandalism, Robbery In Enugu

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested five suspects linked to various criminal activities in Enugu metropolis within a span of one week.

Disclosing this at a press briefing on Friday, the Enugu State NSCDC Commandant, Dr. Elijah Willie, said the arrests were part of intensified efforts by the Corps to rid the state of crime, particularly vandalism, theft and attacks on security personnel.

According to the commandant, two suspects were apprehended on August 19 and 20 during routine patrols for vandalizing streetlight armoured cables.

One was caught at Nkpokiti Roundabout around 8 pm, while the other was arrested at Nza Street, both in Enugu city.

Tools including a saw and iron rod were recovered as evidence.

In another operation, on August 22 at about 1:30 am, operatives arrested a 27-year-old man at Golf Estate, Enugu, caught in the act of cutting galvanised street poles.

The same day, two additional suspects were detained at the Auditor-General’s Office in Enugu.

They face charges of robbery, assaulting an NSCDC officer and damaging government property.

Among them was an 18-year-old identified as a member of a five-man gang known for terrorizing residents and destroying public infrastructure.

Dr. Willie emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court once completed.

He also noted that efforts are underway to arrest other members of the gang still at large.

“This should serve as a warning, there will be no safe haven for criminals in Enugu under my leadership,” Willie declared.

“Anyone caught engaging in vandalism, robbery, or criminal activities will face the full wrath of the law.”

He further urged citizens to remain alert and cooperate with security agencies, especially ahead of the upcoming Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) National Conference, scheduled to hold in Enugu from August 25 to 30.

“We call on all residents to report suspicious activities through the 112 emergency line or directly to security agencies. Together, we can build a safer Enugu State.” he added.

Enugu Senators Rank Lowest Among South East Colleagues In Senate Contributions – New Report

A new performance assessment unveiled by the Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation (ERGAF-AFRICA) has sparked conversations about legislative productivity, representation and the role of South East senators in the 10th National Assembly.

The report, The 1st Session of the 10th National Assembly Deliberative Barometer & Policy Focus Productivity Report, covers the legislative year from June 14, 2023, to June 11, 2024 and offers detailed insight into senators’ individual and regional performances based on issue-based motions, debates, bills, petitions, and points of order.

According to the findings, a total of 1,398 substantive contributions were recorded in the Senate during the review period.

Of these, senators from the South East geopolitical zone accounted for 184 contributions, representing 13.16% of the national total.

State-by-State Breakdown (South East):

  • Anambra: 50 contributions
  • Imo: 49
  • Abia: 43
  • Enugu: 23
  • Ebonyi: 19

In Enugu State, Senator Osita Ngwu led the trio with 16 contributions. Senator Okechukwu Ezea made 6 contributions while Kelvin Chukwu made 1 contribution, a combined figure that placed Enugu behind other South East states in overall participation.

For comparison, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC – Ekiti Central) topped the national chart with 92 contributions, followed closely by Deputy Senate President Barau Jubrin with 75, emphasizing the influence of holding principal offices in the Senate’s legislative output.

The report raises critical questions for constituents, especially as Nigerians begin to evaluate the performance of their elected officials ahead of future elections.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that voters particularly in the South East may find this data useful in assessing the strength of their political representation and holding lawmakers accountable.

Impeachment Gone Wrong:  Four Lawmakers Suspended Over Alleged Plot To Oust Speaker

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for six months over an alleged attempt to unseat the Speaker, Aondona Dajoh.

Those affected include Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian Constituency), Cyril Ekong (Obi Constituency), and James Umoru (Apa Constituency).

The suspensions were announced during Thursday’s plenary session, following what was described as a covert move the night before to impeach the Speaker.

The decision came after Majority Leader Saater Tiseer raised a motion of urgent public importance, accusing the lawmakers of trying to spark an unnecessary crisis within the assembly.

Acting swiftly, Speaker Dajoh directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort the suspended members out of the chambers.

In a follow-up move, he named Audu Elias as the new House spokesperson, replacing Berger who previously held the role.

This development adds to growing tensions in the House, coming just a day after the lawmakers controversially rejected a nominee for commissioner.

I’ll Never Advise My Son To Play For Nigeria – Taribo West

At the funeral of late Super Eagles legend, Peter Rufai, former Nigerian defender Taribo West launched a scathing attack on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Lagos State Government, accusing them of abandoning Rufai’s family.

He expressed profound disappointment, questioning the nation’s values and lamented the poor treatment of football heroes.

West, visibly emotional in a video obtained by DAILY GAZETTE, said:

“It’s disheartening that Lagos State and the NFF dropped the bulk on the family… I felt in my spirit that there is nothing to put your life for—that’s why I had to step back so I wouldn’t implode… What kind of nation is this?”

Recounting the emotional burden, he added:

“I shed no tears when my parents passed, but when Rufai died, I had goose pimples—and everyone I spoke to was in tears.”

West referenced the neglect of other football greats like Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha, and declared:

“With this kind of example, I will never advise even my son to put his feet on this country… This hero… treated this way… and the family had to beg for funeral funds? That is madness.”

Tension In Anambra Assembly As Lawmakers Move To Suspend Udemezue Over Constituency Allowance Disclosure

Hon. Udemezue,

The Anambra State House of Assembly is considering suspending Hon. Abuchi Bernard Udemezue, who represents Ayamelum Constituency, for publicly revealing his constituency allowance and exposing alleged corruption within the House.

Udemezue, in a Facebook live video, not only disclosed details of the allowances lawmakers receive but also made startling allegations about the suspicious death of former lawmaker, Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North 1.

According to posts shared by facebook user, APGA Initiative Forum (AIF Media), Udemezue alleged that Azuka was lured to Awka under the pretense of receiving Christmas rice on December 24, 2024, just days after a failed impeachment plot against the Speaker and Governor. Azuka never returned alive.

Azuka, a Labour Party lawmaker who reclaimed his seat through a court judgment, was kidnapped at gunpoint in Onitsha.

His decomposing body was discovered in February near the Second Niger Bridge.

These revelations, along with Udemezue’s transparency about constituency funds, sparked outrage among his colleagues.

During plenary, Hon. Tony Muobike (Aguata II) moved a motion accusing Udemezue of tarnishing the image of the Assembly and endangering its members.

“He’s Been On Social Media Making Damaging And Threatening Comments. If Not Addressed, This Could Have Serious Consequences,” Muobike Warned.

Following the motion, the Assembly issued an invitation to Udemezue to appear before the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges on August 21.

The invitation was signed by the committee chairman, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme.

Although the outcome of the meeting is still unknown, DAILY GAZETTE gathered that plans are underway to suspend Udemezue.

The proposed suspension has triggered backlash from civil rights activists and the public.

Many view it as an attempt to silence a whistleblower who simply upheld democratic transparency.

MonitNG, a civic accountability group, condemned the Assembly’s actions:

“Rather than celebrate this rare act of openness, the Assembly has chosen intimidation. Constituency allowances are public funds. Citizens deserve to know how they are spent.”

The group called on Governor Charles Soludo to intervene and ensure the lawmaker is not punished for promoting accountability.

“Suspending Hon. Abuchi sends a dangerous message: that transparency is a crime and secrecy is rewarded. This moment is a test of Governor Soludo’s commitment to good governance.”

BREAKING: Kogi Govt Loses Again As Appeal Court Orders Payment Of N1bn To Ex-Deputy Governor Who Was Unlawfully Impeached

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has dismissed an attempt by the Kogi State Government to block the payment of over ₦1 billion in outstanding salaries and entitlements to the state’s former Deputy Governor, Elder Simon Achuba, who was unlawfully impeached in 2019.

A three-member panel of justices; Hamma Barka, Okon Abang and Oyejoju Oyewumi unanimously ruled against the state government’s request to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.

In the lead judgment, Justice Okon Abang emphasized that the Court of Appeal is the final arbiter in civil cases emanating from the National Industrial Court, citing Section 243(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

Justice Abang stated unequivocally that Kogi State lacked any legal basis to take the case further and described the government’s move as frivolous, baseless, irritating and unwarranted.

He criticized the legal action led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Adebayo Adedeji, stating that a lawyer of his standing should have advised his client more responsibly.

As a consequence, the court imposed a ₦3 million fine on Mr. Adedeji, ordering him to pay the sum to Achuba.

“I expected the learned senior counsel to the applicants, notwithstanding the juicy nature of the brief, to have taken advantage of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners and advised them accordingly,” Abang said.

“Compliance with the Constitution should not be seen as cowardice but as maturity and restraint.”

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo and the Attorney-General had approached the Appeal Court through their counsel, asking it to halt execution of the earlier judgment which awarded Achuba more than ₦1 billion in unpaid earnings.

They argued that no payment should be made until the Supreme Court had ruled on the matter.

However, Justice Abang rejected this request, saying “The decision of this court is final. When the law says the decision of this court is final, there is nothing the applicants can do. It is as clear as daylight.”

Achuba had earlier secured a favorable ruling from the National Industrial Court (NICN) on November 4, 2020, which directed the Kogi State Government to pay him his unpaid salaries, travel allowances and other entitlements, though excluding security votes.

The Industrial Court found merit in his claims after his impeachment in 2019.

Dissatisfied, the Kogi government challenged the judgment, but the Court of Appeal on April 29, 2024, affirmed Achuba’s legal right to be paid for the years 2017 and 2018.

Despite that ruling, the state government filed a new motion seeking to stop the enforcement and pursue the case further to the Supreme Court, a request the Court of Appeal has now firmly rejected.

Justice Abang cautioned the state government against “executive lawlessness”, reinforcing that the judicial process must be respected and that the appellate court’s ruling is final and binding.

PDP Crisis: I Refuse To ‘Go Low’ With Anybody – Gov. Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has firmly stated that he will not stoop to political mudslinging, amid rising tensions within his party.

Speaking to journalists after the South-West zoning consultative summit of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos on Thursday, Makinde asserted that personal attacks have no place in democratic discourse.

“When people sink into the gutter, I don’t follow them,” said Makinde.

“I can disagree without making it personal. This is a democracy, we will reach out to them.”

He highlighted that despite recent electoral challenges, the PDP remains competitive. Notably, the party placed second in most of the 12 states across the region.

“This is proof that PDP is far from dead. If we keep working hard, we can regain Nigerians’ trust,” Makinde added.

Addressing speculation over zoning the PDP presidential ticket to the South, Makinde emphasized that such discussions can only follow party rebranding and unity.

“We haven’t even started talking about zoning. First, we must build a credible party. Otherwise, everything else will collapse.”

The summit attracted key PDP figures, including Adolphus Wabara (Chairman, Board of Trustees), Governor Douye Diri (Chairman, National Zoning Committee), Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun State) and Peter Mba (Enugu State, represented by Deputy Governor Ifeanyi Ossai), along with former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Bode George, Monsurat Sunmonu, and 12 National Assembly members from Southern Nigeria.
