80 Year-Old Ugandan President Confirms Deal With US To Host Migrants Rejected For Asylum

Uganda has entered into a new agreement with the United States to receive migrants who have been denied asylum in the US but cannot return to their countries of origin, according to a senior government official.

The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs made the announcement Thursday, saying the arrangement is a “temporary” one, and will not apply to individuals with criminal records or unaccompanied minors.

“The agreement is in respect of Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States, but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin,” said Vincent Bagiire, the ministry’s permanent secretary, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He added that Uganda prefers the individuals transferred under the deal to be from African countries, and that detailed implementation procedures are still being worked out.

This development comes just a day after Ugandan officials denied reports of any such agreement.

Now confirmed, it aligns Uganda with other East African countries; Rwanda and South Sudan that have also signed similar controversial migration arrangements with the US.

The policy is part of US President Donald Trump’s administration push to accelerate deportations of undocumented migrants, especially those whose countries of origin either cannot or will not receive them.

Uganda already hosts Africa’s largest refugee population, with over 1.7 million refugees as of 2025, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Many have fled conflict and instability in Sudan, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While the UN has praised Uganda’s open-door refugee policy, rights advocates are raising fresh concerns about the implications of this new agreement.

Critics say such deportation deals may violate international law by exposing migrants to potential torture, abduction, or persecution especially when returned to third countries with limited resources or fragile institutions.

The US has already come under scrutiny for similar arrangements, including a recent case where eight migrant criminals were deported to South Sudan, of which only one was a South Sudanese national. Despite legal battles in US courts, South Sudan accepted custody of the group.

Earlier this month, Rwanda also confirmed it would accept up to 250 migrants under a US-backed plan. Details of that agreement remain scarce.

Although the Trump administration defends these arrangements as necessary due to the refusal of some countries to repatriate their citizens, human rights organisations continue to voice strong opposition.

“These deportations may place people at severe risk,” one rights advocate warned, citing previous cases where migrants ended up detained in harsh conditions before being returned to unstable environments.

For now, both Washington and Kampala are reportedly finalizing how the Uganda agreement will be implemented.

2027: Obi-Atiku Alliance Could Threaten Our Victory, APC Chieftain Warns

A senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dominic Alancha, has raised concerns over a potential alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi, warning that such a coalition could seriously weaken the APC’s chances in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, Alancha said both leaders, if united under a single ticket, could command over 13 to 14 million votes, potentially surpassing the APC’s performance in 2023.

“If Atiku and Obi reach a consensus and run together, it will deplete our support base significantly,” Alancha said.

“They already control a large share of the electorate.”

The warning comes after a wave of high-profile opposition leaders; Atiku, Obi, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and others adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July as their joint political platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu.

The coalition was formed amid growing public dissatisfaction over economic issues, including inflation and a high cost of living.

Together, Obi and Atiku polled over 12 million votes in the 2023 elections, more than four million above Tinubu’s official tally.

Alancha, who also leads the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum (NENF), advised President Tinubu to reconsider the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket used in 2023, arguing it could further alienate northern Christians and cost the party vital votes in a more competitive 2027 race.

“If the same religious ticket is retained, it gives the opposition a strong advantage. The coalition is not sleeping, they’re working hard,” he said.

He stressed that early preparation is key, warning that the calm atmosphere now may not last once campaigns heat up.

The APC chieftain also commented on growing speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan might stage a political comeback in 2027.

Though Jonathan has not declared any intention to run, reports suggest quiet lobbying within the PDP and parts of the North calling for his return.

“Jonathan is around the corner. Some northern groups are forming almost a cult-like movement pushing for his return,” Alancha claimed.

He cautioned that if Jonathan joins the race alongside Atiku and Obi, the APC would struggle to justify a continued reliance on the 2023 strategy.

“In a three-horse race featuring Jonathan, Atiku, and Obi, the APC must present a more balanced ticket if it wants to remain viable,” he said.

While some view Jonathan’s possible return as a stabilizing force, critics believe it could deepen the PDP’s internal crisis, especially with recent defections and leadership crisis.

Abduction Foiled As Bus Driver Runs Over Kidnapper, Injures Two Others

A kidnapping attempt along the Hayin-Dam road in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State was thwarted on Sunday evening when two alert bus drivers used their vehicles to knock down suspected kidnappers while escaping an ambush.

The incident occurred around 6:00 pm at Sabon-Kurutu junction, as the buses were returning from the Katari market to Hayin-Dam village.

According to eyewitness Malam Ahmadu Muazu, the drivers acted swiftly when a group of armed bandits suddenly emerged from the bush and opened fire on the buses.

In a bold move to save their passengers, both drivers rammed their vehicles into the attackers before fleeing the scene.

“The driver of the first bus hit one of the gunmen and sped off. The second bus was also attacked, but its driver managed to strike another bandit before escaping,” Muazu said.

A female passenger on the first bus was shot during the crossfire and was rushed to a hospital in Katari, where she is currently receiving treatment.

Fortunately, no passengers were abducted, and all managed to escape the scene, thanks to the quick response and bravery of the two drivers.

At the time of this report, attempts to reach ASP Hassan Mansur, the spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, were unsuccessful.

Messages sent to his phone had not been returned.

15 Farmers Killed In Fresh Plateau Attack, Thousands Displaced

At least 15 farmers have been killed following a coordinated attack on seven villages in Chakfem district of Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The affected communities; Manden, Jibin, Tim, Jiblang, Koppang, Mihdihin, and Jilem were overrun on Monday evening, between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm, by gunmen who reportedly burned homes, looted livestock, and left scores injured. Over 3,000 residents were forced to flee.

Several homes were destroyed, including the traditional ruler’s residence and official vehicle.

Many of the victims were women and children.

Survivors are receiving treatment at COCIN Hospital, Mwar-Chakfem.

The National President of the Mwaghavul Development Association (MDA), Mr. Bulus Dabit, confirmed the incident and blamed delayed security response on the difficult terrain and inaccessibility of the communities.

“Security forces only reached the scene the next day, by which time the attackers had fled,” he said.

Dabit warned that if urgent action isn’t taken, remote communities like theirs face the threat of total annihilation.

Survivors described a night of terror and helplessness:

HRH Da Raymond Yombish, whose palace was razed, said:

“I managed to escape, but they burned my official Jeep. The attackers came in large numbers.”

Another survivor, Sohotden Emmanuel, said:

“We were ambushed. I ran to a nearby farm to hide. Only divine intervention saved us.”

Mr. Dabit alleged that Fulani militants were behind the attacks, saying previous attempts to invade the communities had failed until now.

He claimed the attackers used four different routes into Mangu, aiming to reach the heart of the Mwaghavul territory.

In response, MACBAN Plateau Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, denied any involvement, saying:

“We condemn the attack and sympathize with the victims. The accusation is unfounded. We urge a thorough investigation.”

Security agencies have not yet commented. Attempts to reach Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) spokesperson Major Samson Zhakom were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Bokkos LGA continues to suffer similar attacks. At a press briefing in Jos, the Bokkos Concerned Youth group said over 10 communities have been overtaken by armed groups, with 61 others attacked in recent months.

Spokesperson Mr. Dapet Chris Ortega called for urgent military intervention:

“Whole families have been wiped out. The frequency and scale of these attacks are unbearable.”

He also accused suspected Fulani attackers of being responsible, an allegation again rejected by MACBAN.

The group urged the federal government to equip local communities with tools to defend themselves, engage stakeholders to tackle root causes of violence and invest in economic development and education in affected areas.

Police Service Commission Rejects Promotion Of 179 ASPs

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced that it has withheld the promotion of 179 Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs), citing reasons ranging from retirement to death.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, 176 of the affected officers were already retired, while three had been confirmed dead, making them ineligible for promotion.

“The Commission declined the promotion of 176 ASPs who have exited the service and another 3 who are believed to be deceased,” Ani said.

Meanwhile, the commission has approved the elevation of 952 ASPs to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) following the latest promotion exercise.

The PSC emphasized that all necessary decisions have been officially communicated to the Inspector-General of Police for immediate implementation.

This latest development comes as part of the commission’s routine review of personnel records to ensure that promotions are awarded only to eligible and active officers in service.

ADC Rejects Proposed Salary Hike For President, Governors, Others

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly opposed the proposed salary increases for political office holders, calling the move “an affront to the suffering Nigerian people.”

The proposal, made by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), would significantly increase the pay of top government officials, including the President, Vice President, governors and others.

In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said that while the RMAFC has a constitutional mandate to periodically review salaries, doing so at a time of widespread economic hardship shows a lack of empathy and connection to the realities faced by most Nigerians.

“Millions of citizens are battling with rising food prices, high fuel costs, and an inadequate minimum wage. Proposing a salary hike for political leaders now is tone-deaf and deeply insensitive,” the statement read.

While the RMAFC chairman described the current salaries of political office holders as “inadequate, unrealistic, and outdated,” the ADC argued that these officials already enjoy extensive perks, allowances, and access to opaque discretionary funds benefits that far exceed the incomes of average Nigerians.

“If their salaries are truly inadequate, how then are they able to maintain such extravagant lifestyles?” the party questioned.

The ADC highlighted the disparity between the treatment of political elites and ordinary citizens, citing the national minimum wage of N70,000, which has been largely eroded by inflation and is often unpaid in many states.

“Unlike politicians, most Nigerians receive no allowances to cushion the rising cost of living. This makes the proposed salary increase not just unfair, but morally indefensible,” Abdullahi said.

The party demanded an immediate suspension of the plan, insisting that no salary review should proceed while the majority of Nigerians are struggling with economic hardship.

“Government has no moral right to demand sacrifice from citizens while shielding political elites from the consequences of poor economic policies,” the statement added.

The ADC urged the federal government to redirect its focus toward raising the minimum wage to a livable standard, ensuring prompt payment of civil servants’ salaries, and strengthening social welfare programs to support the most vulnerable populations.

“Rather than enriching those at the top, government policy should be aimed at improving the quality of life for everyday Nigerians,” the party concluded.

7,000 Nigerians Still Stranded In Libya, NiDCOM Raises Alarm

The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed deep concern over the fate of thousands of Nigerian migrants who remain stranded in Libya.

Speaking during the official launch of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Strategic Plan for Nigeria (2025–2027) in Abuja on Tuesday night, Dabiri-Erewa revealed that over 7,000 Nigerians are currently stuck in the North African country.

“As we speak, 7,000 Nigerians are stranded in Libya. In 2025, people are still risking their lives through the desert, to die,” she lamented.

She decried the persistent trend of irregular migration, especially through dangerous desert routes, despite years of awareness campaigns, repatriation efforts and advocacy against such journeys.

Dabiri-Erewa called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies and international partners, to address the root causes of illegal migration and provide safer, legal alternatives for young Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad.

On her part, the IOM Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche, emphasized that the newly launched strategic plan is inclusive and nationally owned.

“This is not just an IOM strategy for Nigeria, it is Nigeria’s strategy, supported by IOM,” she said.

“It was developed through inclusive consultations and guided by Nigeria’s national priorities.”

Dimanche urged government institutions, civil society, and development partners to take full ownership of the plan and commit to its execution.

“We’re not launching this plan just to shelve it. I’m counting on each and every one of you to ensure it is implemented effectively. Three to five years from now, we should be able to hold ourselves accountable and see meaningful impact,” she stated.

The event marked a renewed commitment to addressing migration challenges, supporting returnees, and ensuring that migration becomes a choice, not a necessity, for Nigerians.

Convention: PDP Warns Wike Over ‘Reckless’ Remarks, Threatens Disciplinary Action

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning to its members, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stating that any actions that violate the party’s constitution could lead to sanctions.

This comes in response to Wike’s recent comments during a television interview where he denied knowledge of the party’s upcoming elective national convention scheduled for November.

Wike expressed strong reservations, claiming he had not received any formal notification from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and warned that he and his political allies would resist any form of perceived injustice.

“If there’s an elective convention, I am not aware of it. No NEC notice has been served to me and if anyone tries to play games, we’ll challenge it,” Wike stated.

In a swift response, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, rejected Wike’s assertions.

He confirmed that the NEC was properly convened, notices were duly issued, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had been formally notified of the event.

Ologunagba reiterated that the national convention would hold as scheduled in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, and that all preparations were progressing smoothly.

He emphasized that while the party welcomes all members, it expects loyalty and discipline from everyone.

“A political party is a voluntary association. People are free to join or leave, but those who remain must respect the rules and constitution,” Ologunagba warned.
