Katsina Halts Salaries Of Over 100 Teachers For Absenteeism

The Katsina State Government has suspended the salaries of more than 100 public school teachers over absenteeism, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musawa, has confirmed.

Speaking during the pre-inauguration of the state’s Joint Education Sector Coordination Committee, Musawa revealed that the affected teachers had abandoned their duties for periods ranging from one to three months, yet expected to be paid regardless of their absence.

She cited a specific case involving a school principal who claimed to have resumed duties just days ago, well after schools had closed for the holidays more than a month earlier.

“No salaries will be paid to any teacher found to have absconded,” Musawa declared, adding that their status would only be reviewed in September after a case-by-case assessment.

The Commissioner also expressed concern about widespread absenteeism among teachers in the state’s public schools.

She noted that, in some instances, less than 60% of teachers show up for work, and many who are present fail to teach their assigned subjects.

During unscheduled visits to several schools, the Ministry made some troubling discoveries. In one school with over 75 teachers, only about 10 were present.

Another school, which reportedly has about 1,000 teachers, had just 80 on site, leaving most classrooms empty.

Musawa stressed that the poor level of commitment from teachers is undermining the quality of education in the state’s primary and secondary schools.

“Improving education starts with ensuring teachers fulfill their responsibilities,” she said.

To address these systemic challenges, the state government has initiated the formation of a Joint Education Sector Coordination Committee.

The committee will include key stakeholders such as Save the Children International, UNICEF.and other education-focused partners. Its goal is to identify gaps in the education system and propose sustainable solutions.

UNICEF’s Education Manager, Michael Banda, pledged the organization’s support for the committee, including financial backing for one year to aid its activities.

However, Banda emphasized the need for adequate representation from all relevant stakeholders to ensure the committee achieves its mission.

The Katsina government says it remains committed to overhauling the education sector and restoring discipline, accountability, and quality to the state’s schools.

EFCC Arrests Bank MD, Catholic Nuns Over Alleged N1.2 Billion Loan Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the Managing Director of Mayfresh Mortgage Bank Limited and two Catholic nuns over an alleged attempt to manipulate shareholder records to evade a ₦1.2 billion loan repayment.

Those arrested include: Mark Egbegolu, MD of Mayfresh Mortgage Bank, Aba, Abia State, Reverend Sister Annette Ezekwem and Reverend Sister Getrude Okafor, both affiliated with Madonna University, Elele, Rivers State

The EFCC alleges that the trio conspired to falsify documents at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) by altering the names and birth dates of key shareholders in the bank in order to avoid paying back a loan obtained in 2020.

At the heart of the case is Prof. Martin Anagboso, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Madonna University, who was arrested earlier and is considered the lead suspect.

According to investigators, Prof. Anagboso secured the loan by creating a debenture in the bank’s favor, then allegedly worked with others to illegally change corporate records and strip majority shareholders of their controlling interests.

Those targeted in the manipulation include the late Chief Steven Edeh, Arc. John Paul, and Mrs. Maria Edeh-Omeogo, all believed to be major shareholders of the bank.

The scandal reportedly caught the attention of National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who ordered a probe into the CAC tampering.

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre has condemned the alleged fraud. Its Executive Director, Dr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, called for immediate prosecution of all involved.

“This is a clear case of economic sabotage. Authorities must not sweep this under the carpet,” he said.

“The suspects should be charged and prosecuted without delay to restore public confidence in our institutions.”

Attempts to get comments from the suspects were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to their known numbers went unanswered as of Monday evening.

Naira Marley Denies Bullying, Killing Mohbad

Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, widely known as Naira Marley, has publicly denied any involvement in the death of his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad.

In a video released on Tuesday via the Marlian Music YouTube channel, Marley addressed the ongoing accusations that have trailed him since Mohbad’s passing in September 2023, which sparked national outrage and protests.

“I’m doing this video for my fans, the Marlians around the world, especially those who believed in me but still had doubts,” he said.

“No, I didn’t bully him. And I didn’t kill him.”

Naira Marley opened up about his rise to fame after returning to Nigeria in 2018, his legal troubles with the EFCC in 2019, and how his popularity grew so quickly that living in Nigeria became difficult, despite having roots in the UK.

Addressing the events leading up to Mohbad’s death, he referenced several controversies, including:

  • The NDLEA incident,
  • An attempted suicide,
  • Disputes with his former manager,
  • A lawsuit against a music distributor,
  • And ongoing issues involving Sam Larry.

“Even after all that happened, Mohbad told people he still wanted to come and apologize,” Marley revealed.

“But I didn’t know he was going to die. If I had known, I might have let him come. But at that time, it was all just too much for me.”

He also insisted he was out of the country when Mohbad passed away. “I was in Amsterdam. I’ll even show videos with timestamps,” he said, explaining that the trip was primarily to spend time with his children.

Describing the moment he heard about Mohbad’s death, Marley recalled, “Someone said Mohbad is dead while we were eating.”

“I thought it was a joke or a publicity stunt. But soon, I saw Instablog say it was from an ear infection. Then on Twitter, boom, Naira Marley, you’ve finally killed him.”

His statement comes months after the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions cleared Marley, show promoter Sam Larry, and associate Primeboy of any involvement in Mohbad’s death following an investigation.

Bye-Election: Lagos Labour Party Chair Says Peter Obi’s Political Clout Is Declining

The Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Dayo Ekong, has publicly expressed concerns about the diminishing political influence of former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Ekong urged Obi to take a step back and reconsider his plans to run for president in 2027.

She attributed Obi’s waning popularity to his recent political maneuvers, including his opposition to the Julius Abure-led LP faction and his endorsements of candidates outside the Labour Party.

Ekong wrote: “Peter Obi’s influence appears to be fading as Nigerians grow tired of what many see as inconsistent and self-serving political actions. His once principled stands are now viewed as disruptive, alienating both allies and supporters.”

She pointed to recent election results as proof of Obi’s declining sway, highlighting failures in Edo, Imo, and Anambra States.

Of particular note was the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency by-election in Anambra, which she described as a significant setback.

Before the rerun in Onitsha North 1, Obi abandoned the official LP candidate and endorsed Justina Azuka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), even campaigning with ADC-branded attire.

Despite his support, the ADC candidate lost, the LP candidate’s performance worsened, and the APGA candidate won, all without Obi’s backing.

Ekong criticized Obi for prioritizing personal alliances over party unity, suggesting that such actions are causing his influence to erode even in his political strongholds.

She also pointed to ongoing tensions between Obi and the LP leadership as a factor limiting his broader appeal.

“A prudent and visionary politician like Peter Obi losing so much ground, especially at home, is a worrying sign,” Ekong commented.

“He has surrounded himself with advisors who may not fully grasp the implications of their strategies. The electorate is observing closely and forming opinions ahead of 2027.”

The Labour Party is currently embroiled in a leadership dispute, split mainly between the Julius Abure faction and the camp aligned with Obi and Peter Otti.

The Supreme Court recently ruled that the leadership issue is an internal party matter, dismissing previous lower court judgments in favor of Abure.

Amid this turmoil, Obi and other opposition leaders have formed the National Opposition Coalition Group, adopting the ADC platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Obi insists that this coalition does not amount to anti-party activity, emphasizing that the elections have not yet taken place.

Activist Demands N25 Million Compensation, Apology From Catholic Diocese Over Wife’s Eviction

Human rights activist and coordinator of the Recover Nigeria Project (RNP), Comrade Osita Obi, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Catholic Diocese of Awka, demanding a public apology and ₦25 million in compensation for the alleged illegal eviction and destruction of his wife’s property.

Obi, speaking at a press conference in Awka, condemned the diocese’s actions, accusing it of forcefully evicting his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Obi, and five others from shops at No. 27 Secretariat Road, Awka, on July 31, 2025, without prior notice or legal documentation.

He described the move as “inhumane and unjust,” alleging that the Diocese bypassed due process and compared their actions to those of “bandits and terrorists.”

“I am not against the Catholic Church, but I am strongly opposed to the way the Awka Diocese has handled this matter,” Obi said.

“They evicted my wife without proper court procedures and have now hospitalized her due to the trauma.”

Obi warned that if the Church fails to apologize and compensate him, he will escalate the issue, even threatening to take it to the Vatican. He also revealed that he is consulting legal counsel for possible redress in court.

Obi also rejected any suggestion that his wife could return to the shop, citing a 2022 police petition from the Diocese accusing her of aiding kidnapping and other crimes, claims he said were false and defamatory.

Meanwhile, court records show that the Diocese had obtained a legal judgment regarding the property.

In a ruling on July 10, 2025, Magistrate E.C. Chukwu of the Senior Magistrate Court II, Awka, ruled in favor of the Catholic Diocese of Awka in a suit (MAW/971/2024) against “Unknown Persons” occupying the property.

Court documents revealed that eviction notices, including quit notices and summons, were served through pasting after failed personal service attempts.

The court found that the defendants did not respond or appear in court to contest the case, resulting in a default judgment in favor of the Diocese.

According to Rev. Fr. Nicodemus Izuchukwu, the property manager for the Diocese, the Church intended to reclaim the building for its own use.

He stated that the property had been taken over by unauthorized occupants following the death of the former priest managing it.

Despite the court’s ruling, Obi insisted that the eviction was executed without proper notice and transparency.

He criticized the judiciary for enabling what he called a “backdoor arrangement,” and vowed to seek justice not only for his wife but also for the other affected tenants.

“This is not just about one shop. It’s about abuse of power, disregard for the law, and lack of human empathy,” he added.

Obi demanded the revocation of the eviction, payment of damages, and a formal apology from the Diocese.

Enugu: Mainpower Disco Petitions EERC, Demands Suspension Of New Tariff Order

The Mainpower Electricity Distribution Company has formally petitioned the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), requesting an immediate suspension of the recently issued tariff reduction order, which took effect on August 1, 2025.

The company’s spokesperson, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the petition, dated August 14, 2025, was submitted in protest of the EERC’s Order No. EERC/2025/003, which lowered electricity tariffs for Band A customers from ₦209/kWh to ₦160.40/kWh and froze tariffs for Bands B and C.

The reduction has been widely criticized by key industry stakeholders, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), generation companies (GenCos), other distribution companies (DisCos), and the Federal Ministry of Power, all of whom argue that the move is financially unsustainable.

According to Ezeh, the petition supported by a four-paragraph affidavit and signed by Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, Managing Director/CEO of Mainpower, contends that the tariff order was unilaterally issued without due process or mutual agreement with Mainpower, violating the commission’s own regulations.

Mainpower claims that while a 3-day consultation meeting was held with EERC from July 2 to 4, 2025, no agreement was reached on key cost parameters, which significantly affect the final tariff.

Despite this, the Commission proceeded to issue and publish the tariff order on July 18, 2025, contrary to procedural requirements laid out in the EERC Tariff Methodology Regulation 2024 (EERC/R004).

Mainpower says the Commission disregarded its own rule that mandates either reaching a cost agreement within 21 days or initiating a formal hearing process.

The company further alleged that after a follow-up meeting on July 25, 2025, EERC sent a letter on July 30, insisting on enforcing the new tariff from August 1, effectively shutting down further dialogue.

Ezeh warned that the tariff reduction poses a severe threat to Mainpower’s financial and operational stability.

The company estimates a monthly revenue shortfall of ₦1.3 billion to ₦1.5 billion, amounting to nearly ₦7 billion in losses over five months.

This shortfall, it says, would jeopardize its ability to meet market settlement obligations to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) and the Market Operator (MO), potentially reducing its compliance rate from 97% to 81%.

Mainpower also fears supply disconnection if it fails to meet its remittance obligations, as electricity supplied to the state is governed by a Vesting Contract between EEDC and NBET, which relies on cost-reflective tariffs set at ₦209/kWh.

The company’s proposed ₦33.2 billion capital investment plan including feeder automation, network expansion, and the deployment of 350,000 smart meters could be derailed, leaving over 42% of customers unmetered into Q1 2026 and exacerbating energy theft and billing inefficiencies.

Operationally, reduced cash flow could hinder infrastructure maintenance, causing more outages and driving dissatisfied customers toward self-generation further eroding Mainpower’s revenue.

The company also warns of reputational damage, diminished investor confidence, and the possibility of industrial action if it struggles to meet payroll and vendor payments.

Mainpower is urging the Commission to:

1. Immediately suspend the implementation of the disputed tariff order.

2. Conduct a formal review of the tariff, with a request to adopt one of two alternative pricing scenarios:

Scenario 1: ₦206.80/kWh, or

Scenario 2: ₦194.54/kWh.

The petition, citing various sections of the 1999 Constitution and the EERC’s own regulatory framework, stresses the need for fair, consultative and transparent tariff-setting processes to ensure the financial sustainability of the Enugu State electricity market.

Amaechi’s ‘One-Month Anti-Corruption’ Pledge A Hollow Rhetoric – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed as deceptive and laughable a recent claim by former Transport Minister and political rival Rotimi Amaechi, who vowed to eradicate corruption in Nigeria within a month if given the opportunity.

Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television on Tuesday, Wike labelled Amaechi’s statement as a blatant attempt to mislead Nigerians, describing it as “an insult to the collective intelligence of the people.”

“How can someone who shut down the judiciary in his state for nearly two years come around and talk about fighting corruption in 30 days?” Wike asked. “It’s pure hypocrisy.”

Wike didn’t hold back in highlighting what he called Amaechi’s legacy of misgovernance during his time as Governor of Rivers State.

He cited several projects, including a now-abandoned monorail, a phantom international hospital allegedly worth $30 million and a state aircraft that mysteriously disappeared for years with no explanation.

According to Wike, Amaechi was indicted by a panel of inquiry for financial misconduct, yet ironically turned to the same courts he had previously crippled for legal cover.

“This is why people say justice is for the wealthy. He denied the poor access to the courts but used them to protect himself,” Wike added.

The FCT Minister also came to the defense of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the current administration inherited a deeply broken system and is taking difficult but necessary steps to reform the economy.

He cited the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates as examples of hard decisions meant to ensure long-term stability.

In response to criticism from Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation who described Tinubu as unapproachable, Wike said governance should not revolve around access to the president.

“That’s why there are ministers and aides. You don’t bypass everyone just because you want to see the President,” Wike said, adding that some criticisms are rooted in personal disappointment rather than national interest.

He also brushed aside concerns about serving under a rival political party, asserting that his decision to join Tinubu’s cabinet was motivated by patriotism and a desire for national stability, not betrayal of the PDP.

“Some people are bitter because they were not picked as running mates. That’s their personal issue, not Nigeria’s,” Wike stated.

While acknowledging the current economic challenges facing millions of Nigerians, Wike expressed optimism that the pain will be temporary and that the reforms will eventually yield positive results.

“The President’s policies are for all Nigerians, rich or poor. Everyone deserves a better life, and that’s the direction we’re headed.”

Gov. Soludo Fires Eight Vigilantes Over Brutal Assault On NYSC Member, Orders Immediate Prosecution

The Anambra State Government has dismissed eight members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group following the assault and public humiliation of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor.

This was announced on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, during a press briefing at the security agency’s headquarters in Awka.

According to Emeakayi, the dismissed operatives deviated from their lawful mandate when they attacked the corps member during a supposed pursuit of suspected cultists.

He described their actions as grossly unprofessional and unacceptable.

“Their conduct falls completely outside the authorized duties of the agency and is utterly condemnable,” he stated.

The Soludo-led administration responded promptly to public outcry and evidence of the assault, which showed the victim being beaten and stripped by armed members of the security outfit in Oba, Idemili South LGA.

Emeakayi confirmed that the dismissed officers will be handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for prosecution.

He emphasized the state’s zero-tolerance policy toward abuse of power by any security operative.

“The Soludo administration will not tolerate unprofessionalism, brutality, or any abuse of office,” he said.

“Any officer found guilty of misconduct will be dismissed and prosecuted immediately.”

In a move to support the assaulted corps member, the government has reportedly paid her medical bills, replaced her damaged personal items including a laptop and mobile phone and issued a formal apology to both her family and the NYSC leadership.

Despite initial efforts by the victim’s family and NYSC officials to quietly resolve the matter, the state government stood firm on a full investigation and public accountability, citing the need to uphold justice and set a precedent.

Emeakayi noted that the incident has triggered a wider reassessment of the Agunechemba security outfit and other community-based security structures.

“This marks a turning point in reforming community security. Our administration is committed to accountability, professionalism, and the protection of human rights,” he said.
