Allegations Of Vote Buying Mar Anambra South Senatorial Bye-Election As APC Candidate Takes Early Lead

As the Anambra South senatorial bye-election nears its conclusion, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) appears to be leading the race.

However, the process has been clouded by serious allegations of vote buying involving both APGA and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A field visit by DAILY GAZETTE polling units across Nnewi South, Nnewi North, Ihiala, and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas revealed that voters were reportedly being offered cash incentives ranging from ₦10,000 to ₦25,000 per vote, mostly by APGA operatives.

Despite these claims, voting proceeded peacefully in many areas, with a decent voter turnout similar to that witnessed during the recent Onitsha House of Assembly bye-election.

At Osumenyi, hometown of APC’s governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, reports also surfaced of cash inducements.

Likewise, in Ukpor, where APGA’s candidate Dr. Emma Nwachukwu hails from, similar allegations emerged.

Speaking to newsmen, a voter, Madam Comfort Okoye, expressed concern over the trend:

“They came here and gave people between ₦10,000 and ₦25,000. There’s serious hunger in the land. While some of us rejected the money, others didn’t. It’s really unfortunate.”

She went on to describe the situation as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic values:

“This is a travesty of democracy. It’s disheartening that this is happening in a state led by a professor. Such desperation is nothing short of electoral fraud. We’ve never seen it this bad.”

She called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take note of the situation, particularly in Nnewi South, Nnewi North, Ekwusigo, and Ihiala.

From Prison To Perks: Comfort Emmanson Receives Phones, Jobs, Land

Comfort Emmanson, the air passenger involved in a high-profile altercation with Ibom Air crew on August 10, has received a wave of support following her court discharge and release from Kirikiri Prison.

Businessman Oga Uby stepped forward with two generous offers: he gifted her a brand-new iPhone 16 Pro Max to replace the one damaged during the incident and secured her a four-year ambassadorship contract with Tubex Logistics Services.

“I have donated an iPhone 16 Pro Max to the Ibom passenger, Comfort Emmanson, to replace the phone that was damaged during the altercation with Ibom Air,” Uby said.

“I also endorsed her for a four-year contract with our company as our brand ambassador.”

Earlier in the week, Ossai Ovie Success, senior special assistant on media to the Delta State Governor, offered Emmanson a job in Delta State with a monthly salary of ₦500,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Delta Social Media Summit in Asaba on August 28.

“All expenses, including flight tickets, five‑star hotel accommodation, and tour costs, will be fully covered,” Ossai said.

“This is to help her relax after her release from prison.”

Further support came from real estate developer Emmanuel Chukwudi Nwafor, who pledged Emmanson a plot of land in Katampe Extension, FCT, allowing her to choose any size and build immediately:

“She’s free to choose whichever plot size she wants and can build immediately,” Nwafor wrote.

Billionaire businessman Francis Van‑Lare also offered to sponsor her travel to Qatar and Turkey.

The generosity comes on the heels of Emmanson’s discharge from court, after the prosecution withdrew the five-count charge and the lifting of her no-fly ban.

APC Hails High Voter Turnout In Zamfara Bye-Election, Flags Security Concerns

During Saturday’s by-election for the Zamfara State Assembly in Kaura Namoda South Constituency, the All Progressives Congress (APC) praised the strong voter turnout and smooth conduct at polling units.

Speaking at the Kasuwar-Daji Primary School polling station, Yusuf Idris, the APC’s state Publicity Secretary, described the turnout as “large and commendable.”

“We have been here since morning, we have been monitoring the election. The process is peaceful,” he said.

Idris also commended INEC officials for arriving early and conducting themselves responsibly and noted that security personnel were present ahead of schedule to maintain law and order.

Despite the positive tone, Idris expressed concerns about interference from the Community Protection Guard (CPG), a state-run security outfit.

“There were pockets of interference in the process by personnel of the Community Protection Guard, a Zamfara Government‑owned security outfit,” he stated.

“The police command in the state has banned local security outfits such as CPG from participating in election activities. I see no reason why CPG personnel should be allowed around the election venue. We urge security agencies to take note of this to avoid any disruption of the process.”

At the Magaji Polling Unit in Maguru Town, Malam Jafaru‑Kaura, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, offered a contrasting view, denying any involvement of CPG operatives.

“We have been here since morning, we have no record of any violence, and the election is moving on smoothly.”

“Since we came here, I have not seen any CPG personnel. The state government did not deploy any CPG personnel to the polling units; that allegation is baseless.”

Football Legend Christian Chukwu Laid To Rest In Enugu Amid Tributes

Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as “Chairman”, was on Saturday laid to rest in his hometown of Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Chukwu, who passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74, was honoured with a series of tributes and ceremonies that spanned over ten days, drawing the participation of national leaders, sports icons, and fans across Nigeria.

Speaking at the burial, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State described the funeral as the final chapter in a series of events that celebrated Chukwu’s extraordinary life from tribute nights in Lagos and Enugu to a colloquium in his honour.

“For me, and I believe for so many others, it is difficult to have met Chairman without being inspired by his simplicity and humility,” Mbah said.

“Without a doubt, he was disciplined, dignified, polite, and empathetic.”

The governor assured the family of the state’s continued support and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to immortalising Chukwu.

“As a government, we will always stand by you and ensure that Chukwu is immortalised. He served and loved Enugu and Nigeria with all his heart,” he said.

In his homily, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ike, Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, praised Chukwu’s impact on both football and his community.

“Chukwu was a strong man who led his team through battles and emerged victorious—be it with Rangers or the Super Eagles. His generosity extended beyond the pitch and into his church and family life,” Bishop Ike noted.

Chukwu remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated defenders.

Born in Enugu, he captained both Enugu Rangers and the Super Eagles, leading Nigeria to its historic first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980.

His leadership qualities later saw him coach both teams with distinction, earning a reputation for discipline, humility, and football excellence.

In recognition of his achievements, he received the National Honour following the 1980 Nations Cup triumph and was later awarded the African Football Legend Award in 2012.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr. expressed gratitude to those who gathered to honour his father.

“We thank everyone for the love and respect shown to our father. His legacy lives on through each of you.”

Among the dignitaries present were; Mr. Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, NFF President, represented by NNL Chairman, Mr. George Aluo, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central and members of the Enugu Executive Council.

Others are; Retired Anglican Archbishop Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, former Rangers players and sports administrators, including Chief Nnanna Atuonwu and former Chairman of Enugu Sports Club.

Man Fakes Own Kidnap To Extort N500,000 From Family

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Bello Azeez, for allegedly faking his own kidnapping in a desperate attempt to extort ₦500,000 from his family and acquaintances.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the suspect, a native of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, orchestrated the fake abduction after his father declined a request for financial help.

“When his request was turned down, he staged his abduction,” Ayanlade said. “On August 11, he claimed he was travelling to Ibadan and then began making distress calls to his parents and friends, alleging that he had been kidnapped.”

In a surprising twist, Azeez instructed his family to transfer the alleged ransom of ₦500,000 directly into his personal bank account—a red flag that raised suspicions among his relatives.

To gather the funds, his family reportedly pooled contributions from relatives and even launched a GoFundMe campaign, unaware it was all part of a deceitful plot.

Suspicious of the arrangement, the family contacted the police, who swiftly launched an investigation. Tracking Azeez’s phone revealed he had never left Owo, contrary to his claims.

He was subsequently arrested and, during interrogation, confessed to staging the kidnapping in order to clear a personal debt.

DSP Ayanlade condemned the act, describing it as a stark reminder of how greed and deception can destroy trust and bring legal consequences.

“This case underscores the dangers of greed and deceit, which can ruin lives. Parents and guardians are urged to guide their children against crime, peer influence, and moral decadence,” he said.

Azeez is expected to be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

The police also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue supporting law enforcement efforts to promote peace, security, and social responsibility in the state.

Rivers LG Poll: RSIEC Recognises Okocha-led APC, Beke Faction Kicks

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially confirmed that it will only recognise candidates submitted by the Chief Tony Okocha-led faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 30.

The clarification was made by Chidi Halliday, RSIEC’s Commissioner for Administration and Legal Matters, during an interactive session with civil society groups in Port Harcourt.

Halliday revealed that the commission had received two separate lists of APC candidates—one from the Okocha-led faction and another from the Chief Emeka Beke-led faction, but only one met the deadline.

“The list from the Chief Beke APC was received for record purposes only,” Halliday stated.

“RSIEC monitored the primaries conducted by the Tony Okocha-led APC and will be recognising only the candidates that emerged from that process.”

He further explained that RSIEC does not engage in internal party disputes or court battles, noting that the commission relies solely on documentation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the legally recognised leadership of political parties.

“To us, after the primaries are over, you cannot start submitting your list. All those we are dealing with are from the records we got from INEC,” Halliday said.

In response, Darlington Nwauju, spokesperson for the Beke-led APC faction, disagreed with RSIEC’s stance, maintaining that their candidate list was submitted within the required timeframe.

“Any attempt to publish names without the endorsement of our Chairman, Emeka Beke, and State Secretary, Sam Sam Etetegwung, as candidates of APC in Rivers State will attract the long arm of the law,” he warned.

The conflict stems from a longstanding internal power struggle within the state APC.

A Rivers State High Court ruling last year reinstated the Beke-led executive, aligned with former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, after the group had been dissolved by the APC National Working Committee under Abdullahi Ganduje over alleged anti-party activities.

Meanwhile, RSIEC Chairman Dr. Michael Odey reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible local government election.

He disclosed that RSIEC had successfully obtained the official voter register from INEC, which will be publicly displayed ahead of the election.

“We have a signed letter from INEC issuing us the voter register. It is authentic, and the INEC Chairman has promised full support,” Dr. Odey assured.

Tension High As PDP, APC Clash Over Security In Adamawa Bye-Election

Heavy security presence overshadowed the Ganye State Constituency by-election in Adamawa State on Saturday, as the two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) traded accusations amid concerns over military deployment and alleged voter inducement.

The election, organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), witnessed a large turnout but was marred by political tension and controversy surrounding the extent of security arrangements.

Speaking to newsmen after casting his vote, Adamawa PDP Chairman Tahir Shehu criticized what he described as an overwhelming and unnecessary deployment of security forces. According to him, over 2,000 military personnel and 12 armoured tanks were brought into Ganye Local Government Area for the exercise.

“We never imagined that Nigeria even had up to 12 armoured tanks,” Shehu said.

“Where are these when Boko Haram and bandits are killing soldiers and citizens in the North-East?”

He also condemned the presence of Assistant Inspector General of Police Taiwo Adeleke, who led a high-powered security operation.

“This is something a DPO could have handled. If this kind of firepower was used in Borno, we wouldn’t still be dealing with insurgency,” he added. “Even if APC relocates the Defence Headquarters here, they still won’t win.”

Firing back, former Deputy Governor of Adamawa, Martins Babale, dismissed the PDP’s complaints, saying the party no longer has a stronghold in the state.

“PDP is dead and buried in Adamawa,” Babale declared.

“Atiku Abubakar brought PDP here, but now that he’s irrelevant, Nigerians are rallying behind the APC, the only party that can sustain democracy.”

He accused the PDP of hypocrisy, arguing that the same party undermined democratic institutions during its years in power.

Observers at various polling units reported incidents of open vote buying, allegedly involving both major parties.

Despite the heavy presence of security personnel, including over 45 vehicles in AIG Adeleke’s convoy, the incidents went largely unchecked.

AIG Adeleke and his team patrolled the area throughout the day in an effort to maintain law and order.

The by-election was triggered by the death of APC lawmaker Abdumalik Jarou in May 2024, leaving the Ganye constituency seat vacant.

The outcome of the vote is seen as a litmus test for the political strength of both parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As at the time of filing this report, INEC had yet to release official results or make a formal statement on the conduct of the poll.

How Protests, Missing Materials Marred Enugu South Bye-Election For The Fourth Time

The much-anticipated by-election for the Enugu South Urban Constituency ended in frustration on Saturday as voting failed to take place for the fourth consecutive time, despite a significant voter turnout at the designated Uwani Secondary School polling centre.

Although officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were present and appeared prepared, the process could not commence due to the absence of sensitive materials, including result sheets.

By 3:20 pm, with no voting activity in sight, the polling unit was shut down and electoral materials packed up.

Speaking to reporters, Enugu State Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu expressed disappointment at the continued failure to conduct the election.

“This is the fourth attempt, and we are still unable to hold the by-election. I appeal to all political actors to exercise restraint and allow the process to proceed peacefully. The people of Enugu deserve the right to vote and be represented,” he said.

PDP candidate, Sam Ngene blamed the delay on political interference, naming high-profile figures such as Senator Kelvin Chukwu and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji, who he accused of disrupting the process.

Responding, Minister Uche Nnaji defended his presence at the polling unit, stating:

“I’m here as the APC leader in Enugu State. I have every right to be present. The PDP knows it cannot win this election. If it’s not concluded today, we will remain here until it is.”

Meanwhile, LP’s Enugu South Chairman, Chinwuba Ngwu, also expressed frustration with INEC.

“We’ve been here since 7 am, but there’s been no accreditation or voting. INEC hasn’t communicated anything. It’s total silence,” he lamented.

The seat became vacant after the State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal nullified the March 18, 2023 election results, citing irregularities.

A rerun was ordered in eight polling units, covering 4,618 registered voters.

In the original vote, Bright Ngene (LP) was declared the winner with 5,862 votes, defeating Sam Ngene (PDP) by over 2,000 votes.

This marks the fourth failed attempt to conduct the rerun, previous efforts were scheduled for February 3, February 14, and June 8, 2024, all ending in chaos or postponement.

Anambra Bye-Election Turns Bloody As Thugs Unleash Mayhem On Deputy Governor, Commissioner

Tensions flared during the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election on Saturday as violence broke out, leading to alleged attacks on the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim and the Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odumegwu.

According to eyewitness reports, angry youths in the area confronted and held the deputy governor hostage, accusing him of engaging in vote-buying.

The mob also allegedly attacked Commissioner Odumegwu, who was said to have accompanied the deputy governor to the scene.

Reacting to the incident shortly after casting his vote in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, Governor Charles Soludo condemned the attack, accusing Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the APC gubernatorial candidate, of masterminding the assault.

“This is an act of thuggery,” Soludo said. “Government officials, including the Deputy Governor and the Commissioner for Environment, were attacked. It’s unacceptable.”

Adding his voice, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, National Publicity Secretary of APGA, also blamed the APC candidate for the chaos.

“That shows you that thugs are out to govern Anambra State and that is the kind of governor he would be if, in the unlikely event, he is elected,” Opara stated.

“I can confirm to you that the Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Felix Odumegwu, was attacked by APC thugs sent by their gubernatorial candidate. If not for the security operatives at his country home in Ezinifite, Aguata, it would have been a different story today.”

“How can Ukachukwu leave his home in Osumenyi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, and go to Ezinifite in Aguata to attack the Commissioner for Environment?” he asked.

In a swift rebuttal, Comrade Tony Uche, an aide to Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, denied that the APC candidate ordered any attacks. Instead, he accused the Deputy Governor and Commissioner of arriving in Osumenyi with a heavily armed security team to influence the outcome of the by-election.

“If you see the number of vigilante personnel that came with them, over twenty trucks, you’d understand the youths’ reaction,” Uche claimed.

“Ukachukwu never ordered anyone to attack the Deputy Governor or the Commissioner. The youths simply resisted what they saw as an attempt to hijack the election.”

As at the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, had not issued an official statement on the incident.
