Six Suspects Arrested As Enugu Police Foil Crime Spree, Recover Arms, Stolen Motorcycle

The Enugu State Police Command has made significant strides in its fight against crime with the arrest of six criminal suspects linked to armed robbery, cultism, and motorcycle theft.

The coordinated operations which spanned multiple days and locations, also led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, a stolen motorcycle and other incriminating items.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that the arrests were the result of sustained intelligence-led policing efforts by various tactical units of the Command.

On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at around 10:30 p.m., operatives of the Crack Tactical Squad, while on patrol in the Abakpa area of Enugu, intercepted a male suspect riding a black motorcycle.

The rider, later identified as Tochukwu Edeh (27), aroused suspicion with his unusual behaviour.

A search revealed a locally fabricated pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, concealed in a black bag in his possession.

In a related development, the Command’s Anti-Cultism Squad carried out a targeted operation on August 10, 2025, following confessions from two suspects already in custody for armed robbery and cult-related activities.

The follow-up led to the arrest of three alleged members of the Black Axe confraternity; Odoh Friday (24), Okamkpa Onyeka Chukwu (22) and Uzor Okwudili (23).

Recovered from the suspects were a locally made single-barrel pistol, an expended cartridge, three blue candles suspected to be used in cult rituals, and quantities of cannabis.

In another breakthrough, police operatives from the Oji-River Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), apprehended Kosi Ani (22) and Ahmed Ibrahim (29) on August 9, 2025, around 12:45 pm.

The suspects were caught attempting to sell a Topway motorcycle stolen the previous night.

Under interrogation, both men confessed to robbing a commercial motorcyclist around 9:00 p.m. on August 8.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, lauded the operatives for their swift and professional conduct.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining public safety and called on residents to continue supporting law enforcement efforts.

“We remain resolute in our mission to rid Enugu State of criminal elements. I urge citizens to provide credible information that can help us serve the public better,” CP Giwa said.

All suspects are currently in custody, and police investigations are ongoing.

The Command confirmed that they will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Igbo-American Veterans Urge UK To Intervene In Nnamdi Kanu’s Continued Detention

The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID) have called on the United Kingdom to take immediate diplomatic action for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has remained in detention in Nigeria for over four years.

During a world press conference in Abuja on Friday, AVID President, Dr. Sylvester Onyia, sharply criticised the UK government’s silence on the matter, despite Kanu’s status as a British citizen.

Onyia described Kanu’s 2021 abduction from Kenya and subsequent rendition to Nigeria as a violation of international law and human rights conventions.

“This was not an arrest; it was a kidnapping that breached Kenya’s sovereignty and violated the UN Convention Against Torture,” Onyia said.

He further accused Britain of complicit silence, referencing several international legal frameworks including the UN Charter, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and rulings such as Belhaj v. Straw (2017) that classify rendition as illegal under international law.

Kanu was seized in Nairobi on June 27, 2021, and brought to Nigeria where he has since faced legal proceedings. Onyia insists the UK’s inaction over the years reflects a deeper, historical bias.

“Britain’s silence is not golden, it is crimson with complicity. It continues the same policy it upheld during the Biafran War: silence in the face of Igbo suffering.”

He also referenced the 2022 ruling by Nigeria’s Court of Appeal which discharged Kanu, a decision some officials have downplayed, falsely interpreting it as non-acquittal.

“Discharge is not acquittal? That’s a lie. The Court of Appeal discharged him, yet the UK stood back. Governments that claim to uphold the rule of law should act like it,” he said.

AVID challenged Britain’s justification that Kanu’s dual nationality limits its role.

Onyia dismissed this argument, stating that international law obligates the UK to protect its citizens, regardless of dual nationality.

“If Britain claims he is also Nigerian, international law still requires action. The UK has no legal basis to sit idle while its citizen is held under repealed laws.”

Onyia also raised concerns about Kanu’s health, invoking Article 12 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and precedent from Dixon v. UK (2007).

“If Kanu dies in detention, the UK will not just be a bystander, it will be an accomplice. Under international law, Britain must intervene medically.”

AVID is calling on the British government to publicly condemn Kanu’s rendition, demand his immediate release, launch a parliamentary inquiry into the breaches of international law and consular protection under the Vienna Convention and end what it calls “diplomatic cover” for human rights violations.

Dr. Onyia concluded with a stern warning:

“A government that claims to defend human rights must begin with its own citizens. Silence is not neutrality; it is complicity. If Nnamdi Kanu dies, his blood will stain Britain’s hands. The world will remember.”

Tinubu Approves N16.7bn For Immediate Reconstruction Of Mokwa Bridge

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the sum of ₦16.7 billion for the urgent reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which was severely damaged by flooding in May.

The disaster claimed the lives of over 200 people, left hundreds displaced, and several others missing after heavy floods swept through Mokwa Local Government Area.

The approval was announced on Saturday in Abakaliki by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke after a joint meeting with the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.

The statement was released through Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Information.

Idris, currently leading a Federal Government delegation on a three-day project tour and citizens’ engagement in the South-East, said the funding reflects the administration’s commitment to addressing urgent national infrastructure challenges.

“We want to thank Mr. President and the Honourable Minister of Works. We approached the President together, and he graciously approved the reconstruction of the 10-span bridge. This means a lot to the people of Niger State,” Idris said.

He commended Senator Umahi’s swift response in the aftermath of the disaster, including sending technical experts to assess the damage shortly after the bridge collapse.

In his remarks, Senator Umahi described President Tinubu as a compassionate and responsive leader, saying the bridge project was among several recent approvals aimed at enhancing national infrastructure.

“The President approved the immediate reconstruction of the bridge following the Minister’s request. His approval came without hesitation,” Umahi said.

He added that similar infrastructure interventions have been approved across the six geo-political zones, including a 5-span bridge in Wukari, Taraba State, the Lokoja bridge, permanent repairs to flood-damaged sections of Afikpo Road linking Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo states.

Others are; the Keffi Flyover Bridge, the Jebba Bridge in Kwara State, seven bridges in Edo State and a bridge project in Kebbi State.

Bye-Election: INEC Officials With N2.5 Million Arrested By Police

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) found in possession of ₦2.5 million in cash during the by-election for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the arrest took place in Iperu Remo around 12:45 am, when a police patrol team intercepted a Mitsubishi Spacewagon with Lagos registration number AKD 887 HT.

The occupants of the vehicle included two INEC officials, Mr. Joe-Stans Toryem and Ms. Mandara Aminat, along with their driver. A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of ₦2.5 million in cash, which was in the possession of Mr. Toryem.

During preliminary interrogation, Mr. Toryem allegedly confessed that the money was handed to him at a hotel in Iperu by an individual known only as “Political Solution”, acting under the directive of his supervisor.

“The suspects were apprehended for electoral-related offences and are currently assisting with investigations,” said Odutola.

In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Lanre Ogunlowo, ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for thorough investigation.

“The command is actively monitoring the electoral process and remains committed to ensuring transparency and credibility in the ongoing by-election,” Odutola added.

Tension In Enugu As PDP Candidate Accuses Minister Of Disrupting Bye-Election; Nnaji Denies Involvement

The political atmosphere in Enugu grew tense on Saturday following an accusation by PDP candidate, Sam Ngene, who alleged that the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, disrupted the ongoing by-election in Enugu South Urban Constituency with the aid of hoodlums, a claim the minister promptly refuted.

The by-election is the result of a long legal and political battle, after the State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal nullified the March 18, 2023 election results, ordering a rerun in eight polling units, affecting 4,618 registered voters.

Previous attempts to conduct the rerun had failed.

On february 3, 2024, the rerun was cancelled due to alleged missing result sheets.

On February 14, 2024, it was abandoned after violence erupted.

While on June 8, 2024, the rerun election was postponed indefinitely, until Saturday’s fresh exercise.

The race has effectively become a two-man contest between Labour Party candidate, Barr. Bright Ngene, currently in prison over a community-related matter and PDP’s Sam Ngene, a former member of the House of Assembly.

Speaking at his polling unit, Sam Ngene alleged that the exercise was once again under threat from powerful political figures.

“We are here as PDP to conduct this election because we know that this is my stronghold, this is my ward, and my polling unit is one of the places that had this problem,” Ngene said.

“The first time, it was Senator Kelvin Chukwu from Nkanu West and some other people who were not supposed to be here. They disrupted this election. The second time, the same thing happened. This third time again, we are announcing that the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, is also here, and I am wondering why he came. He came in here with hoodlums, with intimidation, disrupting this election and making sure that it does not hold.”

“Ask yourself, who are we even contesting with? Somebody is behind bars for fraudulent activity, convicted and sentenced, and he is still on the ballot. Is that supposed to be so? The answer is no. The constitution is very clear: if you are convicted or if you are an ex-convict, you cannot stand for any election. You can’t even vote. You have lost your freedom completely,” he stated.

In his reaction, Minister Uche Nnaji rejected the accusation, maintaining that his presence at the polling unit was lawful, as a leader and representative of his party.

“I am an APC man, and that is why I was appointed. I remain an APC man. I am the leader of APC in the state, and on that basis, I am the polling unit agent of APC. You can see my tag, so I am here rightfully,” Nnaji said.

He also denied bringing thugs to the venue.

“I don’t carry hoodlums. I carry policemen, army, and DSS—people that are friendly to the public, people that are law-abiding, people mandated by law to protect lives and property. That is what I use,” the minister stated.

Addressing the rising tension, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, appealed to stakeholders and voters for restraint.

“You can see the good number of political bigwigs present here today from the PDP, APC, and Labour Party. Many people are here, either to vote or to observe. However, according to one of our Corps members presiding over this election, some voters are saying they will not cast their votes unless the candidate currently in prison; who they allege isn’t constitutionally qualified is disqualified from contesting,” Dr. Chukwu said.

“So, I am pleading with members of the public and the good people of Enugu to kindly allow us to conclude this process today. This is my prayer. Let all of us conduct ourselves properly, regardless of our positions in society. This is the fourth time we are coming out for this election, and I am appealing to everyone to cooperate.”

“I honestly do not know why this place is even this crowded; it is not supposed to be so. Therefore, I am pleading with all stakeholders in Enugu State; let us not create problems in this election. Please, that is my prayer and my request,” he added.

Edo Bye-Election: PDP Agents Missing In Several Polling Units

Agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were noticeably absent from several polling units in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State during Saturday’s by-election.

A visit to polling stations at Oluku, Owina, and Eronseyi Primary School, among others, revealed that only agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were present to monitor the election process.

There was no visible presence of PDP representatives at these locations.

The absence of PDP agents raised concerns about the level of participation and representation by the party in the affected areas.

In response, Toni Azeigbemi, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo State, downplayed the issue, insisting that the party was fully participating in the by-election.

“We have our polling agents on the ground in many units. After all, Peter Obi of the Labour Party won in several polling units during the 2023 presidential election, even without agents in most of them,” Azeigbemi said.

Despite the PDP’s assurance, eyewitness reports from various polling stations continued to show a lack of party agent representation in key locations across the constituency.

APC Demands Cancellation Of Kano Bye-Election Over Widespread Violence

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency by-election and the Ghari Constituency rerun in Kano State, citing widespread violence and disruption by armed thugs.

According to the APC, the electoral process in the affected areas was marred by chaos, with over 200 suspected thugs reportedly arrested by police across the state during the exercise.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party alleged that security agencies were overwhelmed in several polling units, forcing voters to flee due to violence and intimidation.

“The APC calls on INEC to immediately cancel the by-elections for Shanono/Bagwai and Ghari constituencies due to extreme violence and electoral disruption caused by armed thugs,” the statement read.

The party said it had received verifiable reports from affected areas, indicating that the integrity of the electoral process had been severely compromised.

It warned that continuing the election under such conditions would undermine democratic values and set a dangerous precedent for future polls.

“Allowing this process to proceed under such conditions of utter brigandage and violent voter intimidation contradicts the principles of free, fair, and credible elections,” the APC added.

JUST IN: Top Ansaru Terrorist Leader Captured

Nigeria’s security agencies have arrested Abu Baraa, a top commander and alleged leader of the terrorist group Ansaru, responsible for numerous high-profile attacks across the country.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, announced the development at a press briefing held at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja on Saturday. He was flanked by all the service chiefs and heads of Nigeria’s intelligence community.

Ribadu described the arrest as the result of a high-risk, intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation, which had been in motion since May. Abu Baraa was ultimately captured in July, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism.

“I’m pleased to inform Nigerians that we have successfully carried out a complex operation that led to the arrest of key leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan — commonly known as Ansaru, the Nigerian affiliate of Al-Qaeda,” Ribadu said.

Ansaru emerged in January 2012, originally splitting from Boko Haram and presenting itself as a more “humane” alternative.

However, its activities quickly turned deadly, focusing on attacks against Nigerian security forces, civilians, and government infrastructure.

Ribadu explained that the group openly aligned itself with global jihadist movements, adopting the rising sun emblem of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Over the years, Ansaru established urban sleeper cells and rural strongholds, especially around the Kainji National Park region, spanning Niger and Kwara States, and even extending toward Benin Republic.

Abu Baraa’s capture is considered one of the most important since the arrest of Khalid al-Barnawi in 2016, a previous Ansaru leader who had been designated a global terrorist by the U.S.

Department of State in 2012 alongside Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and Ansaru founder Abubakar Adam Kambar.

While it is not yet confirmed if Baraa officially succeeded al-Barnawi, his role within the group has been described as central to its operations in recent years.

Ribadu emphasized that this arrest represents a major milestone in dismantling the Ansaru network and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rooting out terrorism and restoring peace across Nigeria.

this is a critical victory in our broader national security efforts. we will continue to track down and neutralize threats to our country,” ribadu assured.
