Enugu Community Bans Masquerades Over Mayhem On Road Users

The Iheakpu-Awka community in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State has officially banned all masquerade activities for the remainder of 2025, following a series of violent incidents involving individuals disguised as masquerades.

The decision, announced in a statement from the Office of the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South LGA, came after at least two reported attacks on road users last week, including one particularly disturbing incident on Monday, August 18, at Ezzi, Iheakpu-Awka.

According to the statement, a commuter from Kogi State was assaulted by persons dressed as Akatakpa masquerades.

The victim sustained injuries and required brief medical attention.

Following the incident, local authorities held consultations with security agencies and traditional leaders, leading to a full review of masquerade-related activities in the area.

“It was established that while the Akatakpa masquerade holds cultural significance, it has increasingly been exploited by some individuals as a disguise for committing violence and intimidation,” the statement read.

“Immediate Suspension: All Akatakpa masquerade activities in Iheakpu-Awka and surrounding areas are suspended effective August 19, 2025, for the rest of the year.”

“Enforcement: Any individuals found engaging in masquerade activities during the suspension period will be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law.”

“Security Directive: Security operatives have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the ban.”

The local government chairman, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, emphasized its respect for cultural heritage but insisted that no tradition should serve as a cover for criminal acts.

“We are committed to preserving our cultural identity, but public safety, human rights, and the dignity of every resident and visitor must take precedence,” the chairman affirmed.

The council reiterated its dedication to maintaining peace, law, and order across the LGA, while encouraging communities to uphold cultural practices that do not endanger lives or security.

Rivers LG Poll: RSIEC Clears 16 Parties As Wike’s Loyalists Secure Key Tickets

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has released the final list of political parties and candidates approved to contest in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for August 30.

According to a statement signed by RSIEC Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, 16 political parties were cleared following a screening exercise held at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt from August 8 to 12.

The cleared parties include the major players, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as others such as the Labour Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), African Action Congress (AAC), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and several others.

Notably, while the APC is fielding chairmanship candidates in 20 of the state’s 23 local government areas, the PDP has only presented candidates in three LGAs. The PDP’s candidates include Dr. Gift Worlu (Obio/Akpor), Allwell Ihunda (Port Harcourt City) and Chukwu Ogbugu (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni).

Many of the APC candidates are known loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and are returning LGA chairmen from his administration.

Among them are Confidence Deko (Gokana), Dr. Chidi Lloyd (Emohua), Obari Ollormate (Eleme), Akuro Tobins (Okrika), and Dr. Thomas Bari-ara.

Meanwhile, most of the remaining 14 parties did not present candidates for all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 23 LGAs.

RSIEC has posted the full list of cleared candidates at its headquarters and is encouraging parties and candidates to review it.

Dr. Odey also held an interactive session with civil society groups, calling for their support, along with that of security agencies, to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.

“RSIEC is committed to providing a level playing field. Free and fair elections require collective input from civil society, the media, security agencies, and the people,” Odey stated.

The upcoming LG elections are taking place under a transitional political climate in Rivers State.

The vote is being organized by the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), and comes just weeks before the expected end of a six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu.

This follows a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated previous local government elections held by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, whose loyalists had previously won across the councils.

The court decision paved the way for a fresh poll, setting the stage for a renewed political contest—one that appears to be heavily influenced by Wike’s camp.

I’m Not Aware Of Any National Convention, Wike Denies Knowledge of Ibadan Venue

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prepares for its upcoming national convention, internal tensions have deepened, with the camp of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike expected to meet today to decide its stance on the process.

Wike, speaking on a Channels Television programme, denied knowledge of any approved venue for the convention and rejected claims of a parallel convention being planned by his group.

“I’m a NEC member, and I have not been informed of any decision on a venue,” he said. “How can a few individuals gather and call that NEC? Until NEC properly meets, no one can say where the convention will be held.”

His remarks were in response to reports that the PDP had fixed Ibadan, Oyo State, as the venue for its convention scheduled for November 15–16, 2025.

Wike dismissed the legitimacy of such reports, stating there had been no formal vote or decision by the party’s highest decision-making body.

Despite speculation that Wike’s faction is uneasy with the arrangements led by the Convention Planning Committee, the PDP has insisted that preparations are on track and inclusive.

National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, pushed back against rumours of internal sabotage or alternative conventions.

He confirmed that the planning committee, chaired by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, had already begun consultations and set up sub-committees, with full representation from all party organs and stakeholders.

“The NEC-approved convention in Ibadan remains on course,” Ologunagba said.

“We are engaging with INEC, and all key stakeholders, including the BoT, Governors’ Forum, and state chapters, are involved. Talk of a parallel convention is pure speculation, possibly a hallucination.”

Meanwhile, Wike used the same media appearance to defend President Bola Tinubu against mounting public criticism over the economy.

He acknowledged the widespread hardship but argued that the administration’s policies, though tough, were necessary for long-term stability.

Wike singled out former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and ex-Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for what he described as “personal attacks” on Tinubu.

“There’s a difference between criticism and insults. Governance isn’t about everyone seeing the President. There are channels, and ministers are part of that process,” Wike said, alleging that Lawal’s discontent stemmed from political disappointment after not securing the vice-presidential slot in 2023.

2027: Kwankwaso Unlikely To Support Tinubu – Buba Galadima

Buba Galadima, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and a close ally of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed any chances of the former Kano State governor aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Galadima described any such alliance as highly unlikely, citing alleged antagonism from the Tinubu-led federal government toward Kwankwaso and the Kano State Government.

“It will be extremely difficult for Kwankwaso to support Tinubu in 2027,” Galadima said.

“This is someone who stood his ground and defeated APC in Kano. He hasn’t told me, nor has he told anyone close to him, that he plans to support Tinubu.”

Galadima criticized the Tinubu administration for what he called federal interference in Kano’s traditional leadership, specifically its support for Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, despite his removal by the Kano State Government led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a Kwankwaso protégé.

“The federal government is clearly backing their preferred emir. They’ve deployed over 40 police vehicles to guard him. What’s their interest?” he asked.

“There’s now a federal emir and a state emir — two emirs in one city? This is a constitutional aberration. The power to appoint and pay emirs lies with the state, not Abuja.”

He also took issue with federal courts intervening in what he described as a purely chieftaincy matter, questioning the legal and political motivations behind recent court rulings.

Galadima denied any backchannel talks between the NNPP and the APC, insisting that such discussions would not happen without his knowledge.

“Maybe I’m not the closest to him, but we talk often, and he’s never mentioned anything about aligning with Tinubu,” he said.

He further emphasized Kwankwaso’s grassroots appeal in Kano, noting that the former governor’s popularity stems from his tangible achievements and direct connection with the people.

“Kano people trust him because they’ve seen what he has done. That’s why he remains politically relevant.”

While Galadima said the NNPP has not finalized its strategy for the next general election, he hinted that the party intends to play a major role.

“Wherever you see us in 2027, know that’s where the next government will come from.”

NCAA Summons Ibom Air Passenger, Cabin Crew For Questioning

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has invited both Ms. Comfort Emmanson, a passenger on the controversial Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos and Juliana Edward, a cabin crew member, for questioning over the August 10 incident that sparked public outrage.

The development was disclosed by the NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Michael Achimugu, during an emergency aviation stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

The meeting, convened under the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, follows recent cases of passenger misconduct, including a separate incident involving King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1) on a ValueJet flight.

Achimugu explained that the invitation to both parties is part of a full-scale investigation aimed at uncovering the facts behind the mid-flight altercation that gained viral attention online, especially after video footage emerged showing Emmanson’s exposed body during the scuffle.

“I spoke with Ms. Emmanson this morning. We’ve also invited the Ibom Air cabin crew involved. They will appear tomorrow [Wednesday] as part of our ongoing inquiry,” Achimugu said.

There have been divided opinions on social media, with some accusing the cabin crew of mishandling the situation, while others criticized the passenger’s behavior.

The NCAA aims to clarify what transpired and determine whether any aviation safety or professional conduct standards were breached.

Achimugu also clarified that the aircraft’s pilot did not immediately contact airport security upon arrival in Lagos, possibly because the situation had appeared to be resolved before landing.

He noted that Emmanson was the last person to disembark, having gone to the restroom after landing.

The incident triggered a broader conversation on aviation safety and the need for stricter policies against unruly behavior onboard.

During the stakeholder session, Capt. Alex Nwuba, Vice President of Aviation Roundtable and Safety Initiative, urged airlines to enforce conduct regulations more strictly and improve crew training to de-escalate tense situations.

The Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the focus should be on professionalism, accountability, and collaboration across the aviation sector.

“We are not here to point fingers,” Najomo said. “We’re here to ensure everyone understands their roles and responsibilities and executes them according to national and international aviation standards.”

He added that while aviation rules are well documented in Nigeria’s Civil Aviation Act and regulatory manuals, the real challenge lies in enforcement.

“Let’s not just document rules; let’s live them,” he emphasized.

Babachir Lawal Turned Against Tinubu Because He Didn’t Get VP Slot – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has alleged that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, became critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration because he was not selected as vice president.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike claimed that Lawal’s disappointment stemmed from being passed over for the running mate position during the 2023 elections.

“When Mr. President was to choose his vice-presidential candidate, Babachir Lawal visited me in Port Harcourt,” Wike recounted.

“He was angry because he expected to be chosen. When that didn’t happen, he lost it and turned against Tinubu.”

Babachir Lawal has recently voiced sharp criticism of the Tinubu-led administration, particularly regarding its policy decisions and leadership style.

Wike, however, dismissed Lawal’s remarks as driven by personal grievances rather than genuine concern for governance. He said Lawal’s frustrations were obvious and not difficult to interpret.

“It was very clear. We are not kids. Even an intelligent child would understand the root of his anger,” Wike said.

He also advised that if Lawal had issues with the president, he should have addressed them directly and respectfully, rather than going public with harsh criticisms.

“There is nothing wrong with expressing dissatisfaction. But there’s a proper way to do it, not through disrespect,” Wike added.

Obi, NANS, NYSC, Anambra First Lady Condemn Assault On Corps Member

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, took to his official X account to condemn the shocking assault of NYSC member Edema Elohor Jennifer by a state vigilante group.

He described the attack as “inhumane, primitive, and a direct assault on our collective humanity,” adding that such brutality has “no place in 2025” and deeply saddened and ashamed him as an Anambrian.

“That young girl could have been anyone’s daughter, sister, or even mine. What happened is not only a violation of law and morality, but also a direct assault on our collective humanity,” Obi said.

He urged authorities to ensure the perpetrators are arrested, prosecuted, and punished, and called for stronger policies and community safeguards to protect vulnerable Nigerians.

“Our humanity must always come first. Without it, we are nothing but a people adrift in cruelty.”

Similarly, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the assault, calling it a gross violation of dignity, rights, and the ideals of national service.

In an official statement, NANS noted that operatives forcibly entered the corps lodge under unverified claims, assaulting Jennifer despite her valid NYSC identification.

“This action is not only unjustified but deeply troubling. It represents a dangerous affront to the ideals of national service, rule of law, and human rights,” the association said.

They warned against the unchecked power of security outfits and urged the government to investigate thoroughly and hold those responsible to account.

“Corps Members must feel safe in their places of assignment and residence … Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.”

In the same vein, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) described the incident as “unwarranted and unacceptable,” confirming that operatives from the Anambra Vigilante Group stormed the lodge under suspicions of criminal activity, an accusation with no verified basis.

Among those assaulted was corps member Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626).

NYSC reported the matter to the police and stated that investigations are ongoing.

The scheme also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of corps members and encouraged public support for their security.

On his her part, Dr. Nonye Soludo, First Lady of Anambra State and founder of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, described the assault as ugly and humiliating, deeply divergent from the state’s identity as hospitable and just.

She emphasized the importance of rules of engagement that prioritize dignity, civility, and respect, and called for measures to ensure such abuses are never repeated.

“There is no justification whatsoever for such an ugly and humiliating abuse … We must take critical measures to entrench justice and ensure that such scenes do not occur again. Anambra’s image is priceless. We must guard it jealously.”

2027: Northern Group Opposes Repeat Of Muslim-Muslim Presidential Ticket

A northern advocacy group, the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum (NENF), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider any plans to run with a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the group, led by Dr. Dominic Alancha, emphasized the importance of religious and ethnic balance in national leadership, stressing that repeating the same religious pairing from the 2023 elections could deepen divisions and jeopardize national unity.

NENF argued that the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket sparked widespread discontent among Christian communities, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and rekindled fears of marginalization and religious bias.

The group warned that persisting with such an arrangement in 2027 could cost the All Progressives Congress (APC) critical support in key Middle Belt and northern states.

They specifically cited Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, the FCT, and parts of Southern Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, and Gombe regions where Northern Christians hold significant electoral influence as areas where the APC could lose ground if diversity concerns are ignored.

Despite expressing confidence in Vice President Kashim Shettima’s competence, NENF argued that his continued presence on the ticket would not be enough to address growing perceptions of exclusion.

Instead, they proposed that a Christian vice-presidential candidate from Plateau, Bauchi, or Taraba would enhance APC’s appeal while still upholding merit and competence.

The forum, which claims to represent 127 ethnic nationalities across Northern Nigeria, also voiced concern over a possible political alliance between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, saying such a Christian-Muslim coalition could pose a serious challenge to the APC.

“As Nigeria grapples with insecurity, hunger, and growing sectarian tension, the country needs a leadership team that reflects its rich diversity,” NENF stated.

“This is an opportunity for President Tinubu to demonstrate statesmanship and inclusivity. Choosing a credible Northern Christian running mate could be a defining decision for 2027.”

The group vowed to mobilize its network, reportedly over 20 million members, to support Tinubu’s re-election if a more inclusive ticket is adopted.

2027: NNPP To Weigh Coalition Options, Tinubu Support At NEC Meeting

As the 2027 general elections approach, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has announced that key strategic decisions will be taken at its upcoming National Executive Council (NEC) meeting scheduled for August 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP said it will deliberate on a range of issues, including potential alliances, internal party structures, and the political direction it will adopt heading into the next electoral cycle.

Among the topics on the agenda are the review of the ongoing constitutional amendment process, preparations for the party’s congresses and national convention, recent bye-election assessments, and plans for a large-scale membership drive.

Responding to widespread speculation about the NNPP’s political alignment ahead of 2027, Johnson emphasized that the party remains open to multiple pathways but will prioritize its founding principles and national interest in any decision it makes.

He stated, “As we have consistently said, politics is dynamic. While the NNPP is exploring all options, our decisions will remain anchored in the values and vision that define us.”

Johnson reaffirmed that the party is considering three possible courses of action:

  1. Forming a coalition or alliance with other political forces,
  2. Contesting the 2027 election independently under the NNPP banner,
  3. Endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election.

“These options will be extensively debated and decided upon during the NEC meeting. We urge our members and supporters to stay calm and trust the leadership to act in the best interest of the country and the party,” he added.

The NNPP also called on its members and supporters to take part in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise and prepare for a nationwide mobilization and membership registration campaign in the coming weeks.
