Owo Church Bombing Suspects Arraigned, Plead Not Guilty

Five individuals accused of orchestrating the 2022 bombing of Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, appeared in court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to nine counts of terrorism brought against them by the Federal Government.

The suspects; Idris Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdul Malik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar stood before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court.

They are alleged members of an Al-Shabab terrorist cell operating in Kogi State.

Justice Nwite set August 19, 2025, as the date for the commencement of their trial and ordered that the accused remain in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

This arraignment follows the announcement made three years ago by then Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, who declared that the perpetrators had been arrested.

The National Security Council had previously linked the attack to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

During the attack, over 40 worshippers were killed and many more injured as armed men opened fire on congregants during Sunday Mass.

The late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, condemned the massacre as a crime against humanity but assured that it would not break the resilient spirit of the people.

Late Governor Akeredolu also renewed calls for the establishment of state police forces, stressing that a single police command could not guarantee national security.

He acknowledged the efforts of Amotekun but highlighted its limitations due to inadequate resources.

Trump Orders Immediate Eviction Of Homeless Individuals From Washington

U.S President Donald Trump has called for the swift and immediate removal of homeless individuals from the nation’s capital, declaring the situation around Washington as “unacceptable.”

Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday, Trump posted images showing makeshift tent communities and scattered trash along D.C. streets. Alongside the images, he wrote:

“The Homeless have to move out immediately. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the capital. The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong.”

Trump also announced plans to hold a press conference on Monday, where he is expected to address his administration’s new policies on crime and sanitation in the capital.

“Washington should become safer and more beautiful than it ever was before,” he added.

Washington D.C, although managed by its local government and Mayor Muriel Bowser, remains under significant federal control, especially in matters of security and public property.

Trump, a Republican, has repeatedly clashed with Bowser, a Democrat, over crime and governance in the city.

While details of Trump’s plan remain vague, U.S media reports suggest that the federal government is currently considering deploying hundreds of National Guard personnel to assist with enforcing the policy. However, no official order has yet been confirmed.

This announcement comes two weeks after Trump hinted at a crackdown on homelessness around the White House, stating:

“I think it’s terrible, and we’ll have them removed immediately.”

Former SGF, Boss Mustapha Denies Joining ADC, Labels Circulating Rumors Baseless

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has dismissed reports linking him to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the growing opposition coalition, describing the claims as entirely false.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mustapha categorically denied having any affiliation or ongoing discussions with members of the opposition alliance, urging the public to disregard the reports.

“My attention has been drawn to a news story in circulation associating me with the opposition alliance and their choice of the ADC as their political party,” the statement read.

“I want the general public to know that this is fake news. I am not in any opposition alliance, and I am not in any discussion with those who are involved.”

Mustapha emphasized his unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that he is one of its founding members and has no intention of abandoning the party.

“I am a founding father of the APC. While the party may have its internal challenges, like every political organisation, I believe in working from within to strengthen it rather than seeking alternatives elsewhere,” he said.

He called on Nigerians to treat the circulating rumours as baseless and misleading.

How Policemen Arrested Me Without Knowing I Was The Commissioner Of Police – MD Abubakar

Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, MD Abubakar, once had an unforgettable run-in with his own men, who unknowingly attempted to arrest him, mistaking him for a civilian.

In a reflective recount of his time in service, Abubakar shared the surprising and somewhat comical incident that took place on a Saturday morning.

“As Commissioner of Police in Lagos, I never took my duties lightly especially on weekends. Although my official day usually started at 10 a.m., I decided to leave home earlier that morning to inspect officers without prior notice.”

Driving himself in his Jeep, Abubakar headed toward the office, but changed his mind and opted to observe officers stationed along Herbert Macaulay Road instead.

At a checkpoint, he was flagged down by a group of young officers.

“One constable walked up to me and said, ‘Young man, where are you going with your father’s car?’ He asked for my documents and licence. I calmly told him my name was Mohammed.”

The constable insisted he present an ID card. Abubakar, keeping his identity under wraps, replied, “Only if you show me yours first.”

The officer had no ID card on him, so he called for their sergeant, who repeated the request. Again, Abubakar responded by asking for the sergeant’s ID first.

His calm defiance appeared suspicious. Without suspecting his true identity, the officers decided to escalate the matter.

“They told me we were going to the Yaba Police Station (Panti) to verify my identity. When we got there, the only free parking spot was the one marked for the DPO. I parked there. The constable shouted, ‘That’s for the DPO!’ I just smiled and said nothing.”

Inside the station, things took another odd turn. They brought him before an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was in casual clothes.

“He invited me in for questioning. I refused, saying I wouldn’t be interrogated by someone in home clothes. He got angry and tried to drag me inside, I resisted and pulled him back. That’s when he paused, looked at my face more closely and suddenly went pale.”

The realization struck.

Meanwhile, an elderly officer, suspicious of the scene, quietly slipped into the DPO’s office to check the wall where photos of senior officers were displayed.

“Once he confirmed who I was, he didn’t say a word, he just jumped out the window and ran!”

The sergeant still hadn’t grasped the situation until another officer leaned in and whispered into his ear: “That’s the CP.”

The room fell into stunned silence.

“They had no idea who I was the whole time,” Abubakar concluded with a chuckle. “It was one of the most ironic and unforgettable days of my career.”

Ibom Air Bans Unruly Passenger After Violent Assault On Crew Member

Ibom Air has announced a travel ban on a female passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, after she physically assaulted multiple crew members and airport security personnel during and after a recent flight from Uyo to Lagos.

In a statement released on Monday, the airline detailed the events, describing Emmanson’s actions as a serious threat to the safety of the aircraft, passengers, and crew.

According to the statement, the incident began when the crew instructed Emmanson to switch off her mobile phone in line with standard aviation safety protocols.

She refused to comply until the Pilot-in-Command intervened with a public announcement.

Eventually, a fellow passenger seated beside her took the phone and turned it off.

This act reportedly triggered a verbal outburst from Emmanson, though the situation was calmed and the flight departed as scheduled.

However, upon arrival in Lagos, the situation escalated.

“Ms. Emmanson waited for all other passengers to disembark and then proceeded to confront the purser who had earlier instructed her,” the airline said.

“She walked up to the unsuspecting purser, stepped on her, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses and threw them to the floor, and used her footwear to assault her.”

Ibom Air further stated that she slapped the purser multiple times.

When another cabin crew member attempted to intervene, Emmanson slapped her too and attempted to seize a fire extinguisher, presumably to use as a weapon, an action that could have severely damaged the aircraft.

At this point, the Pilot-in-Command had already alerted airport security.

The statement explained that “the Purser, as seen in the viral video on the internet, prevented the passenger from leaving the aircraft until security arrived.”

Security officials from both Ibom Air and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) arrived shortly after, but Emmanson reportedly turned on them as well.

“She attacked them violently,” the airline said, “lashing out at both Ibom Air and FAAN security. She was then restrained and removed from the aircraft by force. Even after disembarking, she continued to assault security staff and even slapped the ground supervisor.”

Emmanson was eventually taken into custody by FAAN security and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

Ibom Air has since submitted a formal report to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and confirmed that Emmanson has been permanently banned from flying with the airline.

Reaffirming its position, the airline stressed: “Ibom Air reiterates its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unruly or violent conduct that threatens the safety of passengers, crew, or equipment. Such behaviour will be met with the strongest possible response, including legal action and permanent restriction from our services.”

Ibom Air also praised the courage and professionalism of its crew under intense pressure, and acknowledged the swift response from both airport security and the Nigerian Police.

“Safety remains our highest priority. We urge all passengers to comply with crew instructions at all times for the safety, security, and comfort of everyone on board,” the airline concluded.

1.9 Million Nigerians Apply For Civil Defence, Immigration, Fire Service Recruitment

A total of 1,911,141 Nigerians submitted applications for the 2025 recruitment exercise conducted by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), as the portal officially closed on Monday, August 11.

The exercise, which attracted significant national attention, was affected by multiple technical challenges.

Applicants faced repeated crashes of the application portal, forcing the board to temporarily suspend the process at several points.

Initially scheduled to commence on June 26, the recruitment was first delayed to July 14, then later pushed to July 21.

To accommodate the disruptions, the application deadline, originally set for August 4, was extended by one week.

Despite the setbacks, the final numbers showed an overwhelming response, with over 1.9 million applicants completing the process.

Breakdown of the figures from CDCFIB’s website indicates that Kogi State topped the list with 116,162 applicants, followed by Kaduna (114,536) and Benue (110,565).

These three states, along with Kano and Niger, made up the top five and jointly contributed 510,174 applications.

On the other end of the spectrum, the states with the fewest number of applicants included Bayelsa (11,669), Lagos (14,216), Rivers (22,210), Ebonyi (23,601), and Delta (27,962) — totaling 99,658.

Following the closure of the application portal, the board issued updates via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday. It confirmed the end of the application phase and gave insight into what candidates should expect next.

“Recruitment Applications Closed! The official recruitment portal for the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board is now closed. We thank all applicants for their interest and commitment to serving with honour, integrity, and national pride.”

In the follow-up post, the board assured that qualified applicants would be notified shortly.

“Next Step! Shortlisted candidates will be contacted shortly with further instructions. Please monitor your email and text messages over the coming weeks for notifications. We also encourage you to regularly check the portal and social media handles for important updates.”

Applicants are advised to keep an eye on their email, SMS, and the official CDCFIB website and social media platforms for further announcements as the recruitment process advances.

2027: Enugu North Zone Reaffirms Support For Gov. Mbah, Cites Landmark Projects, UNN VC Appointment

Stakeholders and community leaders across the six Local Government Areas of Enugu North Senatorial District, popularly known as Nsukka Zone, have once again endorsed Governor Peter Mbah for a second term in office.

During a weekend working visit by the governor, traditional rulers, political leaders, professionals, and other influential voices hailed Mbah’s achievements in just two years, citing key infrastructure projects and his responsiveness to the zone’s long-standing demands.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Chairman of Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Samuel Asadu, recalled three specific requests presented to Mbah before the 2023 elections:

1. The dualisation of the 44km Abakpa Nike–Opi–Nsukka Road

2. Appointment of an Nsukka indigene as Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)

3. Support for the creation of Adada State

He noted with satisfaction that Governor Mbah had already fulfilled two of the three.

“The governor is currently dualising the Enugu–Opi–Nsukka Road and, through his influence with President Bola Tinubu, helped facilitate the appointment of Professor Simon Ortuanya as UNN’s Vice Chancellor, the first from Nsukka since the university was founded in 1960,” Asadu said.

“As for Adada State, although it’s beyond his jurisdiction, he has been supportive of our efforts. So, tell me, why would we choose anyone else?” he asked.

While addressing stakeholders at multiple events including the foundation laying of the 5,000-shop Nsukka International Market and a townhall meeting at UBA Hall, UNN, Governor Mbah reiterated his commitment to accelerating development in the zone.

He revealed that feasibility studies were ongoing for a high-speed rail line from Enugu to Nsukka, which would cut travel time to just 15 minutes.

“You are excited about the road, but you ain’t seen nothing yet,” he remarked.

“A modern rail line is in the works. This is just the beginning.”

Mbah also promised that by 2025, his administration would have completed 260 Smart Green Schools and 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.

Nsukka Local Government Chairman, Engr. Jude Asogwa, described Mbah as “unstoppable,” noting that in just two years, the area had witnessed an influx of vital projects.

“Our people said I should let you know that we are fully behind you,” he said.

“We now have Smart Green Schools, world-class healthcare centres, and a new modern transport terminal. It’s as if Enugu just began two years ago.”

Similarly, Hon. Chidi Obetta, representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal Constituency, commended the governor’s practical leadership and the interactive approach he adopted through the townhall meeting.

“Leadership isn’t rocket science, and Gov. Mbah is proving that with action, not words,” he said.

The gathering featured a wide array of political and community leaders, including Hon. Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, Deputy Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Ezenta Ezeani, and member representing Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, Hon. Dennis Agbo.

Also in attendance were all six council chairmen of the zone and members of the Enugu State House of Assembly from the area among others.

The Imo State Police Command has successfully foiled an armed robbery attempt in Owerri, leading to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of firearms and ammunition.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, the police responded to a distress call on Sunday regarding a robbery in progress at Bishop’s Court, located behind Imo State University.

Swift deployment of operatives to the scene led to the arrest of Ernest Nweke, a native of Umuoji in Ngor Okpala LGA, who currently resides in the World Bank area of Owerri. A locally made pistol was recovered from him.

JUST IN: FG To Arraign Suspects In Owo Church Massacre Three Years After Tragic Attack

Three years after the deadly attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, the Federal Government is set to arraign five individuals accused of carrying out the massacre.

The suspects; Idris Omeiza, Al-Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar, will appear before Justice Obiorah Egwatu at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

They face a total of nine terrorism-related charges, stemming from the June 5, 2022 bombing and shooting that left over 40 worshippers dead and many others injured during a Sunday mass.

The arraignment comes after prolonged investigations and follows a 2022 announcement by the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (rtd.), who confirmed the arrest of those believed to be responsible.

Authorities had earlier linked the attack to members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a terrorist group responsible for multiple violent incidents across Nigeria’s northern and central regions.

The Federal Government says it is committed to ensuring justice is served for the victims and their families.
