JUST IN: All Passengers Must Switch Off Their Mobile Phones During Flights – NCAA Issues New Directive

Following a recent altercation on an Ibom Air flight, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a new directive requiring all passengers to completely switch off their mobile phones during flights.

At a press briefing held on Tuesday in Abuja, NCAA Director General Chris Najomo announced that passengers must turn off their phones during the critical phases of flight, specifically takeoff and landing, at all Nigerian airports.

This move aims to eliminate the confusion caused by varying airline policies on mobile device usage.

“From now on, all mobile phones and portable electronic devices must be switched off completely during the critical stages of flight on all Nigerian carriers. Flight mode will no longer be accepted,” Najomo emphasized.

The directive comes after the recent high-profile incident involving passenger Comfort Emmanson and an Ibom Air flight attendant, which has sparked widespread debate across the country.

Najomo further instructed Nigerian airlines to update their operational manuals to reflect this requirement and submit the revisions to the NCAA for approval.

He also noted that as aircraft technology advances, the rules may be reviewed in the future, but for now, strict compliance is mandatory.

“The flight crew is responsible for informing passengers of this requirement, and passengers must adhere to crew instructions at all times,” he concluded.

BREAKING: INEC Declares Labour Party’s Barr. Bright Ngene Winner Of Enugu South Rerun

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally declared Barrister Bright Emeka Ngene of the Labour Party (LP) winner of the protracted rerun election in Enugu South Urban State Assembly constituency after four failed attempts.

In the initial March 2023 election, Barr. Ngene was declared the winner with 5,862 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Sam Ngene, who scored 2,098 votes.

Ngene was subsequently sworn into office.

However, the election was later nullified by the Enugu Election Petitions Tribunal on grounds that the number of canceled votes exceeded his winning margin.

The court ordered a rerun in eight polling units within Uwani.

Efforts to conduct the rerun were repeatedly thwarted by issues such as missing result sheets, violence, INEC logistical failures and other administrative challenges.

In June 2024, Ngene was convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison by a magistrate court on fraud charges related to a resurrected community matter from 2017. Many believed the conviction was politically orchestrated to prevent him from contesting the election.

On Saturday, August 16 2025, the much-anticipated rerun election again ended in frustration as voting failed to take place for the fourth consecutive time, despite significant voter turnout at the designated Uwani Secondary School polling centre.

Although INEC officials were present and appeared prepared, the process could not commence due to the absence of sensitive materials, including result sheets.

By 4:20 pm same day, with no voting activity in sight, the polling unit was shut down and electoral materials packed up.

PDP candidate, Sam Ngene blamed the delay on political interference, naming high-profile figures whom he accused of disrupting the process.

Responding, the Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji defended his presence at the polling unit, stating:
“I’m here as the APC leader in Enugu State. I have every right to be present. The PDP knows it cannot win this election. If it’s not concluded today, we will remain here until it is.”

Meanwhile, the labour Party chairman in Enugu South LGA, Chinwuba Ngwu, expressed frustration with INEC, saying,
“We’ve been here since 7 am, but there’s been no accreditation or voting. INEC hasn’t communicated anything. It’s total silence.”

DAILY GAZETTE recall that the court-ordered rerun was billed to take place in eight polling units covering 4,618 registered voters.

Taking a decisive step, the Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday declared Labour Party candidate, Barr. Bright Ngene the winner of the election, ending months of uncertainty.

2027: Ex-ADP Aspirant Urges Jonathan To Join Presidential Race

A former presidential aspirant of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Mathias Tsado, has called on associates of former President Goodluck Jonathan to persuade him to contest in the 2027 presidential election.

Tsado made the appeal during an appearance on Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily, on Tuesday.

While Jonathan has not declared any intention to return to the political arena, Tsado expressed hope that the former president would reconsider.

“I am praying for a day that will come when President Goodluck Jonathan will declare and say, ‘I want to run,’” Tsado said.

“Those who have access to him should speak to him. There were rumours in 2023 that he might contest, this time, let them encourage him.”

Tsado believes Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has the leadership qualities the country currently needs.

He highlighted Jonathan’s peaceful concession in the 2015 election as evidence of his commitment to democracy and national unity.

“He is not someone desperate for power,” Tsado noted.

“Remember he once said, ‘My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.’ That statement, and his actions in 2015, still resonate with many Nigerians today.”

Goodluck Jonathan became president in 2010 following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

He won the 2011 election but was defeated by Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, becoming the first incumbent president to lose an election since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

Despite stepping away from the political spotlight, Jonathan has remained a respected figure both in Nigeria and internationally.

Tsado remarked that Jonathan’s current status is one many politicians aspire to, saying, “He occupies a position today that most Nigerian politicians yearn for.”

Viral Video: Anambra Govt Arrests Vigilante Operatives Over Brutal Assault On Female Corps Member

The Anambra State Government has condemned the brutal assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, by operatives of its security outfit and confirmed that the personnel involved have been arrested and placed under investigation.

A disturbing video that surfaced online on Tuesday showed armed security operatives storming a corps members’ lodge and violently assaulting Elobor, accusing her and others of being internet fraudsters despite their NYSC identification and uniforms.

The operatives were seen beating her, tearing her clothes, and ignoring her desperate pleas for help.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage across social media, with many Nigerians demanding accountability and swift justice for the assaulted corps member.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, described the assault as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”

He confirmed that the officers involved had been arrested and detained pending the outcome of an investigation.

Emeakayi explained that the incident occurred during a joint security operation, codenamed Operation Udo Ga achi, which involved personnel from the police, army, DSS, civil defence, and the state’s own security outfit, Agbunechemba, acting under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law of 2025.

“The operatives were on the trail of suspected cultists riding motorcycles and chased them into a compound,” he said.

“In the process of searching the premises, the unfortunate incident involving the corps member occurred.”

While he acknowledged the legality of the operation, Emeakayi stated that the conduct of the officers during the search was not acceptable.

“Immediately the incident was reported, the government moved swiftly to arrest and detain those involved. Our standard procedure is to launch a preliminary investigation, interview victims and witnesses, and determine if internal discipline or prosecution is warranted.”

He further revealed that he had personally met with Elobor and NYSC officials to hear their account and ensure appropriate steps are being taken.

“Our conclusion is clear, while the operatives were on a legitimate mission, their actions violated professional standards and disciplinary measures are underway.”

Emeakayi also clarified that Operation Udo Gatchi is a broader multi-agency operation, while Agbunechemba is the state-sanctioned security unit established under law.

He reassured Anambra residents of the government’s zero tolerance for abuse of power, stating that Governor Soludo’s administration is committed to protecting the rights of all citizens, especially innocent youth corps members serving the state.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals, cutting it from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000 per session.

The announcement was made on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Policy Information, Daniel Bwala, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Bwala explained that the subsidy is already being implemented across key federal medical facilities in all six geopolitical zones, offering critical relief to thousands of Nigerians suffering from kidney-related illnesses.

According to Bwala, the following federal hospitals are currently offering the subsidized dialysis services:

FMC Ebute-Metta, Lagos

FMC Jabi, Abuja

University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan

FMC Owerri, Imo State

University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno

FMC Abeokuta, Ogun State

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos

FMC Azare, Bauchi

University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Edo

University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Cross River

Bwala added that additional hospitals will be included in the subsidy scheme before the end of the year to improve nationwide accessibility.

The dialysis subsidy follows another recent initiative by President Tinubu, the approval of free caesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals.

These measures are part of the administration’s broader commitment to improving healthcare delivery under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“These initiatives are practical steps toward ensuring that no Nigerian is denied access to life-saving healthcare due to financial constraints,” Bwala stated.

FG To Retaliate As US Enforces Stricter Visa Rules On Nigerians

The Federal Government of Nigeria has vowed to introduce reciprocal measures following the United States’ implementation of stricter visa rules, including mandatory disclosure of social media activity for Nigerian applicants.

On Monday, the U.S Mission in Nigeria announced via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle that all Nigerian visa applicants must now provide details of their social media accounts, email addresses, usernames, phone numbers and any other digital identifiers used within the last five years.

Failure to comply with the new requirement could result in visa denial and future ineligibility for U.S entry.

“Applicants are required to list all social media usernames or handles used in the last five years on the DS-160 form. Omitting this information could lead to visa denial,” the U.S Mission stated.

The updated policy expands on existing rules, particularly for student visa applicants, who are already required to remove privacy settings and allow U.S authorities to review their online profiles as part of security vetting.

The requirement stems from broader U.S. immigration tightening policies, first introduced under President Donald Trump and now being aggressively enforced under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, including the revocation of 6,000 student visas over alleged legal and security violations.

In a related development, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has introduced stricter criteria for citizenship applicants under its revised “Good Moral Character” guidelines.

Applicants are now assessed on a wider range of personal behaviors beyond criminal records.

Immigration officers will consider how individuals live, contribute to their community, and whether they adhere to U.S social and legal norms. Indicators include holding a legal job, paying taxes, volunteering, and educational efforts.

In response, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the U.S. policy shift and will take reciprocal action.

“Visa policies are based on reciprocity. If the U.S. mandates our citizens to provide social media history, we will apply the same standards to Americans seeking Nigerian visas,” said Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry.

He confirmed that the government had prior notice of the changes and will convene an inter-agency meeting involving the Ministry of Interior, National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and other stakeholders to decide on an appropriate and coordinated response.

“A holistic strategy will be developed to ensure our response is well-informed and aligned with national interests,” Ebienfa added.

This is the latest in a string of visa-related measures by the U.S. government affecting Nigerians.

Previous actions include; reducing most non-immigrant Nigerian visas to single-entry with a three-month validity, warning of permanent visa bans for individuals who overstay or violate visa terms and heightened scrutiny for student visa applicants, including privacy removal from social media platforms

The U.S government maintains that these measures are part of its ongoing efforts to secure national borders, protect the integrity of its immigration system and promote compliance with visa regulations.
