Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin Laid To Rest With Full Military Honours

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, was laid to rest on Thursday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, in a solemn ceremony that honoured his life, legacy, and leadership.

A funeral service held at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Aremo, drew dignitaries from across the country and beyond, all gathered to pay their last respects to the late monarch.

His coffin, draped in the Nigerian national flag and adorned with military regalia, symbolised both his status and his patriotic service.

Delivering the sermon, the Archbishop of the Ibadan Province of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Williams Aladekugbe, praised the late king’s enduring contributions to Ibadanland, describing him as a unifying force, a compassionate ruler, and a tireless advocate for peace and development.

“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was more than a king; he was a father, a guide, and a beacon of hope for many,” Archbishop Aladekugbe said.

He highlighted the monarch’s reign as one defined by wisdom, inclusivity and an unshakable commitment to the well-being of his people.

“His dedication to the welfare of his people and his commitment to justice will forever be remembered. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the rich legacy he has left us, one that encourages us to strive for a better future.”

The cleric noted that Oba Olakulehin’s passion for cultural preservation and harmony among diverse groups in Ibadan played a vital role in keeping the city united through a period of social and political change.

“His reign was a testament to the power of love and unity, qualities that we must carry forward in our hearts,” Aladekugbe added, urging all to uphold the values championed by the late monarch.

With the final rites concluded, attention now turns to the traditional succession process.

The path is now clear for the installation of the next Olubadan, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, whose nomination and endorsement by the Ibadan kingmakers has already been confirmed.

Preparations are reportedly underway by the Oyo State Government, the traditional council, and the relevant ruling house to commence the enthronement of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

Wike, Ortom, Ikpeazu, Others Who Worked Against PDP Must Be Expelled – Former Gov Lamido

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has called for the immediate dismissal of prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figures including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; ex-Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; and former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu for allegedly undermining the party during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Lamido expressed deep dissatisfaction with what he described as ongoing “impunity” within the PDP.

He urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to take decisive action against members who have openly worked against the party’s interests.

“All those erring members, the Wikes, the Ortoms, the Ikpeazus and others, who openly campaigned against the PDP in the 2023 elections, and who say that they are going to work for APC in 2027, should be sacked from the party,” Lamido said.

He emphasized that this pattern of disloyalty has lingered unchecked since the aftermath of the party’s 2022 primaries, leading to the 2023 polls.

“From way back after the primaries of 2022 leading to the elections of 2023, there are people who, because of their own interest and ambition, felt aggrieved about what transpired in the party’s convention and what they felt was not being able to address their interests as individuals at the elections,” he explained.

“And they turned out against the party and fought the party. We’ve been having this kind of problem, the impunity of people castrating the party and denouncing it,” Lamido added.

Frustrated by what he termed the party’s long-standing tolerance of such behavior, Lamido urged the leadership to finally enforce the rules enshrined in its constitution.

“In the constitution, if you breach the party’s code, you are sanctioned. But somehow, going into a ditch, the party executives are now alive to their responsibilities,” he said.

Due to the lack of action, Lamido disclosed that he has decided to abstain from participating in meetings of the party’s Board of Trustees (BOT) until the issue of disciplinary action is addressed.

His remarks came on the same day the PDP’s National Working Committee issued a stern warning to party members who have declared support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party described such conduct as anti-party and cautioned that offenders could face more severe consequences if they fail to retract their positions.

Jonathan Offered Obi Cabinet Role To Withdraw From 2027 Race – Kachikwu Alleges

A former presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has claimed that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan offered Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy, on the condition that Obi withdraws from the 2027 presidential race.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday, Kachikwu alleged that Northern political interests drafted Jonathan into the race as part of a broader strategy to diminish the South’s influence.

“In order to weaken the South, they have now drafted in former President Jonathan into the race, who is alleged to be offering Peter Obi the position of Coordinating Minister of the Economy for him to support his ambition,” he stated.

Kachikwu also claimed Obi was warned that his chances of winning northern votes are slim due to being Igbo:

“A Peter Obi has been told in very clear terms that he will never get northern votes as an Igbo man, and as such, he should accept to be Atiku’s running mate.”

He accused Atiku Abubakar and certain northern elites of exploiting regional and religious divisions to cling to power without addressing longstanding issues like illiteracy and poverty.

“They use the weapons of region, religion, tongue, tribe, and poverty as they convince millions of poor Northerners that a southern President Tinubu hates them and is the cause of their poverty,” Kachikwu charged.

He condemned what he described as false narratives targeting President Tinubu and southern candidates, urging Nigerians to build with integrity:

“We must all come to equity with clean hands and sincerity of purpose. We don’t burn our houses because we want to kill rats and cockroaches; sometimes we just need to make our houses clean so that rats and cockroaches leave on their own.”

“My earnest prayer is that Nigeria will soon work for every one of us.”

DAILY GAZETTE reports that Peter Obi, still loyal to the Labour Party despite joining an opposition coalition, has not acknowledged Kachikwu’s claims.

Other opposition figures have migrated to the ADC, but it remains unclear where Obi’s 2027 ambitions will ultimately lead.

2027: ADC Only Credible Alternative To APC, PDP – Bolaji Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdullahi, former Minister of Youth and Sports, ex-APC spokesman, and now the National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has stated that the ADC isn’t a so-called “third force” ahead of the 2027 general elections but the primary opposition party capable of challenging the APC-led government.

In an interview monitored by DAILY GAZETTE, Abdullahi clarified the party’s positioning, structure, internal processes and plans to select a presidential candidate, stressing that the ADC is offering Nigerians a credible alternative and building a lasting political tradition.

Responding to analysts calling the ADC a potential third force, Abdullahi dismissed the term outright.

“Which one is the first force and which is the second force? And why do you say ADC is the third force? We don’t see ourselves as a third force. We see ourselves as the only viable opposition party in Nigeria. So it’s either you are in APC, the ruling party, or you are in ADC, the opposition party.”

He argued that such political categorisations are outdated, especially given the current dynamics.

“When you are talking about a third force, how will you categorise the Labour Party and SDP? They are also forces, right? But the majority of PDP members today are in ADC from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to Chief Dele Momodu, among others, who are more or less foundational members of the PDP. They have realised that the PDP ship has sunk and they know that the only option left for Nigerians today is the ADC.”

To Abdullahi, ADC represents more than just another political group.

“ADC is not just a political party, it’s a movement of the people.”

Abdullahi acknowledged that comparisons are often made between the formation of APC in 2015 and the growing coalition under ADC. However, he highlighted a fundamental difference.

“People try to draw a parallel between what happened in 2014-2015, that is the APC, and the emergence of ADC now. But no, that would be like comparing apples and oranges, they are not the same.”

He explained that while APC was a merger of parties like ACN, CPC, ANPP and others, the ADC is uniting individual politicians who want to rescue Nigeria from the risk of one-party dominance.

“What you find this time is not a merger of political parties, what you find is a coalition of politicians under the umbrella of ADC. What has brought this coalition is the desperate desire to save Nigeria from what is clearly becoming a descent into a one-party state.”

Addressing speculation about who will fly the ADC flag in 2027 especially names like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, Abdullahi said the process will be transparent and inclusive.

“Peter Obi has not said if he is not a candidate, then this coalition will end. No, same for Atiku. Obi has been part of this coalition from day one. And these are the exact things that we want to correct as a party. The leadership of ADC will not do anybody any favour. We don’t have any preconceived agenda. ADC does not have a candidate in mind.”

He emphasized that the party will pursue consensus where possible, but if necessary, a competitive primary will be held.

“ADC is not going to twist the system to favour anybody, because we want to hold our party together. We are going to take care to make sure that everything is done transparently in a way that gives confidence to everybody. And there are two options. If we are able to engineer a consensus, that is fine. If not able to engineer a consensus, then we’ll go to the field and the party will back whoever emerges.”

“But to say you will now say to somebody, don’t contest, because we want to give it to somebody, that’s the PDP way, that’s not the ADC way.”

On the issue of political structure, critics argue that ADC lacks presence across all states. Abdullahi rejected that notion.

“If they say ADC has no structure, that means it’s inconsequential, politically speaking, and it does not pose any threat to anybody. So, why are they worried that we are poaching members? Is it not a contradiction?”

He explained that structures come from people, not just physical presence.

“Structure is the people on ground even if a person has like 20 people following him, that is structure, even if it’s just his family. All of them vote in one polling unit or the other. What other structure are you talking about?”

Still, he admitted the party has a long road ahead.

“We are aware that we are a new party. We know we have a lot of work to do, and we are committed to doing it. We are trying to build a party that is not just trying to win the election in 2027, but a party that will endure for a very long time and become a tradition.”

Abdullahi addressed the lack of internal democracy that has plagued many Nigerian political parties and promised that ADC would be different.

“Nigerians have the right to be cynical because of the failure of the past. But what we are saying is that with the ADC, we are asking Nigerians, especially the youths, to have the courage to believe.”

He positioned the party as an opportunity for reform and credibility in Nigerian politics.

“Because every politician today knows that the political class entirely is discredited, there are many people who are also seeing this as an opportunity for redemption. Can we at least do something differently? Can we at least build a real political party? Where did these other parties get it wrong?”

He concluded by stressing the integrity of the ADC’s leadership and their commitment to enforcing discipline.

“The caliber of people in the leadership, yes, they have been around; you cannot impeach their integrity. Whether it’s the national chairman or the national secretary, you may disagree with them, you can say that you don’t like them, but you cannot say these are corrupt people.”

“The way and manner we are going about this is to set a new standard for Nigerian politics and to set a rule that everybody will abide by. To build a political party that is capable of disciplining its own membership, not the other way round.”

Police Foil Robbery In Enugu, Neutralise Suspect, Recover Firearms

The Enugu State Police Command has successfully foiled an armed robbery attempt in the early hours of Tuesday, neutralising one suspect and recovering firearms, ammunition, and other incriminating items.

The incident occurred at about 4:10 am on August 6, 2025, in the Premier Layout area of Enugu, following a distress call to the Independence Layout Police Division.

According to a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the swift response of police operatives and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group led to a fierce exchange of gunfire with the suspected criminals.

“Upon sighting the security team, the criminal elements opened fire,” the statement read.

“But the team responded with superior firepower, neutralising one of the hoodlums, while others managed to escape.”

The identity of the neutralised suspect remains unknown, but a search of the scene yielded several items, including:

  • A cut-to-size locally made single-barrel gun with one live cartridge
  • A locally fabricated Beretta pistol with one round of live ammunition
  • A Nokia torchlight phone belonging to the suspect
  • Two iPhones reportedly stolen from victims
  • A small red bag and a red-and-black coloured torchlight
  • ₦9,000 in ₦1,000 notes

Further investigation on August 8 led to the discovery of an abandoned pump-action gun loaded with four live cartridges, suspected to have been dropped by the fleeing suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the swift response and bravery of the officers involved.

He praised their professionalism and assured residents of the Command’s continued commitment to combating violent crimes in the state.

“We remain committed to ensuring that Enugu State is safe for all law-abiding residents. I urge citizens to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to aid our proactive policing efforts,” the Commissioner stated.

Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or emergencies to the nearest police station, the Command’s control room via 08032003702 or 08086671202, or through the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre by dialling 112.

JUST IN: Please, Come Back To PDP, We Will Harmonize Our Interests – Bauchi Governor Begs Obi

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has called on Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to return to the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mohammed made the appeal on Friday when he hosted Obi at the Bauchi Government House.

The meeting, attended by members of the ‘Obidient’ movement, was followed by an interactive session with journalists.

Emphasising the need for unity among opposition parties, the governor said “We have to harmonise our interests in the interest of the people of Nigeria. The opposition must come together. This ADC, PDP and even the remaining political parties should come together.”

He further explained that his call wasn’t about hostility toward the ruling administration, but about the need for a stronger and more focused opposition.

“And we don’t even hate the present administration. We wish they would do better, but as I discussed with you, there’s no budget. There is no plan. Everything is about politics from day one.”

Mohammed stressed that unity and sacrifice are required to meet the expectations of Nigerians:

“We have to be cautious, not to disparage our people. We have to unite the opposition, our ego and our interests. So that we can present a common front to compete and to make sure that we go to the promised land.”

He described the mood in the country as tense, adding “There is a lot of hunger and anger. And we don’t want to cause so many disparaging movements.”

In a direct appeal, the governor urged Obi to rejoin the PDP “So please come back. That’s where you belong. Don’t go anywhere that is in disarray.”

In response, Peter Obi said his visit to Bauchi was primarily to engage with young people, particularly students in health colleges and Almajiri schools.

“I was in Bauchi to interact with youths in colleges of health and the Almajiris.”

He expressed optimism following the interactions, saying “Based on the interactions I’ve had with future leaders, I am satisfied with their potential.”

Obi also commended Bala Mohammed for his achievements in the education sector.

“I appreciate Bala for the wonderful work he is doing in education.”

Addressing questions about Nigeria’s political direction, Obi stated:

“Our politics must change. It has to be politics of development, politics of competence, politics of capacity and compassion, where we care for other people.”

He described his meeting with Governor Mohammed as a courtesy visit to discuss national issues:

“I visited Bala on a courtesy call to talk about the problems of the country. How can we solve it together?”

Obi also reiterated the importance of political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections; “Alliance is not for power grabbing, but to bring about changes and development.”

As part of his visit, Obi donated a total of N15 million to two educational institutions in Bauchi; N10 million to Malikiyya College of Nursing Sciences and N5 million to Intisharu Islamic and Quranic Memorisation School.

Speaking during the donation at Malikiyya College of Nursing Sciences, he emphasised the role of nurses in healthcare delivery:

“You are very important to this Nigeria, and if there is anything we can do to support what you are doing, we need to do it. The nurse is more important than the doctor. The nurse knows the patient, the nurse owns the patient, the nurse is everything.”

Netanyahu’s Gaza Plan Deepens Political, Diplomatic Firestorm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s push to expand military operations into Gaza City has triggered a political and diplomatic firestorm, not only deepening divides within Israeli society but also straining its historically strong alliances abroad.

Following a ten-hour security cabinet meeting, the Israeli government approved what is being called a “takeover” of Gaza City, a move many see as a prelude to a full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu insists the aim is to dismantle Hamas once and for all.

But critics, including military officials, families of hostages, opposition politicians and international leaders are calling the plan dangerous, misguided, and morally untenable.

The statement released by Netanyahu’s office carefully avoided the word “occupation.” But on the ground, few see it as anything else.

With an estimated 800,000 Palestinians still residing in and around Gaza City, many of whom have already been displaced multiple times, a full-scale military operation would require forced evacuations and the mass mobilisation of reservists, some of whom have served multiple tours in Gaza over the past two years.

The Israeli army’s Chief of Staff, Lt Gen Eyal Zamir is among those sounding the alarm.

According to leaked reports, Zamir warned Netanyahu that a full takeover of Gaza would be “tantamount to walking into a trap,” not only endangering soldiers but also putting the lives of the remaining hostages at risk.

That sentiment is shared by many families of the hostages.

“This is a death sentence for our loved ones,” said Yehuda Cohen, whose son Nimrod has been held in Gaza since Hamas’s October 7 attack.

“Netanyahu is making them collateral damage in a political game.”

Even the Maariv newspaper which typically aligned with centrist-nationalist views, warned that “the prevailing assessment is that most and possibly all of the living hostages will die” if the Gaza City offensive proceeds.

Internationally, Netanyahu’s plan has further isolated Israel diplomatically.

Germany, long one of Israel’s staunchest allies,  announced it will halt all arms exports to Israel that could be used in Gaza.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the decision was “painful but necessary,” citing legal and humanitarian concerns.

“We will not support actions that result in mass displacement and indiscriminate violence,” he stated.

UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer called the escalation “wrong,” warning it would “only bring more bloodshed” and urging Israel to reconsider.

Similar condemnation came from the United Nations, China, Denmark and Australia.

Even the U.S now under President Donald Trump, has remained conspicuously quiet.

NBC News recently reported a heated phone call between Trump and Netanyahu, during which Trump allegedly shouted at the Israeli leader for downplaying the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Yet no formal objection has been made, leaving many to interpret silence as tacit approval.

Germany Suspends Arms Export To Israel Amid Global Backlash Over Gaza Takeover Plan

Germany has announced it will suspend all military exports to Israel that could be used in operations within the enclave.

The decision, made public by Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the eve of the NATO summit, comes in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s newly approved plan to take control of Gaza City, a move widely seen as the precursor to a full military takeover of the Gaza Strip.

“Under these circumstances, the German government will not authorise any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip until further notice,” Merz said.

“It is increasingly difficult to understand how this plan will help achieve legitimate aims.”

Germany, one of Israel’s staunchest allies and its second-largest arms supplier after the United States, is widely viewed as a key supporter of Israel’s security often citing historical responsibility following the Holocaust.

According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Germany accounted for 33% of Israel’s arms imports between 2020 and 2024.

The halt includes a wide range of military equipment, from naval vessels and anti-tank weapons to armoured trucks and ammunition, many of which could have strategic implications for Israel’s operational capacity in Gaza.

Pastor Adeboye Reveals How And When He Will Die

General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has made a striking statement regarding how he believes he will pass on.

During the evening session on Day 4 of the RCCG’s 73rd Annual Convention, held at the Old Auditorium within the Redemption City, the revered cleric told a massive congregation that he knows the manner of his eventual departure from this world.

“It’s going to be on a Sunday. I would go to Church for service, dance very well and return home. I will eat pounded yam, then I will go,” he said.

Though he did not specify the exact date, Adeboye confidently stated that it would happen after a joyful church service.

His revelation came as he led the congregation in a series of prayers themed “Possessing Your Possession”.

The Convention, themed “The Overcomers,” began on Monday at the RCCG’s international headquarters located at Kilometre 46, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Addressing the spiritual gathering, Adeboye clarified that people should not be alarmed or question how he came to know the details of his transition.

“Nobody should bother to ask me how I knew the day of my transition,” he said.

His comments were made in the context of a broader message focused on divine healing.

He stressed that illness is not the only path through which people die, challenging a common assumption about mortality.

In addition to leading prayers for healing, Adeboye guided worshippers through powerful supplications on prosperity, fruitfulness, long life and deliverance from spiritual oppression.

Quoting from 2 Corinthians 8:9, the respected preacher taught that prosperity is the rightful portion of Christians.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich,” he read from scripture to underscore his point.

He went on to encourage believers to reject poverty, describing it as a tool used by the devil to hinder the advancement of the gospel.

“Poverty is a weapon the devil relies upon to halt the spread of the gospel,” he told the congregation.
