Super Falcons star, Chiamaka Nnadozie has earned a prestigious nomination for the 2025 Ballon d’Or Yachine Trophy, which recognises the best women’s goalkeeper in the world.

The 24-year-old Nigerian shot-stopper was named among five nominees for the award following a stellar year for both club and country.

Her nomination was officially announced on Thursday via the Ballon d’Or’s verified platform.

Before her recent transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion Women, Nnadozie played a vital role in helping Paris FC win the Coupe de France, the club’s first major trophy in over 20 years.

She delivered a standout performance in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, making two crucial penalty saves in a dramatic shootout that secured victory for her team.

Nnadozie also shone on the international stage during the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where she was instrumental in Nigeria’s campaign.

Her efforts between the posts saw the Super Falcons clinch a record 10th WAFCON title, with Nnadozie keeping four clean sheets throughout the tournament.

She was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament and selected in the Team of the Tournament for her consistent excellence.

Nnadozie is one of five goalkeepers nominated for the Yachine Trophy in the women’s category. The other nominees are:

Ann-Katrin Berger (Germany)

Cata Coll (Spain)

Trump Says Meeting With Putin May Happen ‘Very Soon’ Amid Ongoing War Diplomacy

U.S President, Donald Trump, has suggested that a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin could take place “very soon,” following what he described as “highly productive” diplomatic talks between his special envoy and the Kremlin in Moscow.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump hinted at the possibility of engaging both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in separate or joint discussions to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

“There’s a good chance that there will be a meeting very soon,” Trump said when asked about upcoming talks with the Russian and Ukrainian leaders.

Though he gave no specific location for the potential summit, reports by The New York Times and CNN, citing sources close to the matter, indicated that Trump could meet with Putin as early as next week.

A subsequent three-way summit involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky was also being considered, according to the reports.

If the meeting materializes, it would mark the first US – Russia presidential summit since June 2021, when then-President Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.

The possibility of the meeting was also discussed during a phone call between Trump and Zelensky.

A senior Kyiv source said the call included NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and leaders of Britain, Germany and Finland.

“It seems that Russia is now more inclined to agree to a ceasefire; the pressure on them is working. But the main thing is that they do not deceive us or the United States in the details,” Zelensky said later Wednesday.

Trump’s outreach followed earlier talks in Moscow between his envoy Steve Witkoff and top Russian officials.

The Kremlin described those talks as “productive,” coming just days before Trump’s deadline to impose new sanctions on Russia if no progress is made toward ending the war.

“Great progress was made !” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, adding that he had briefed several European allies.

“Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come.”

However, a senior U.S official later confirmed that “secondary sanctions” are still set to take effect within two days if Russia fails to move toward a ceasefire.

U.S Secretary of State, Marco Rubio said Witkoff returned from Moscow with a ceasefire proposal, which will now be reviewed in consultation with Kyiv and European partners. But he cautioned against setting expectations too high.

“There’s a lot of work ahead,” Rubio said, warning the Trump-Putin meeting might still be “weeks maybe” away.

Meanwhile, Putin’s foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov described the discussions with Witkoff as a “quite useful and constructive conversation.”

Ushakov added that both sides exchanged “signals” about their negotiating positions, though he did not go into detail.

Zelensky confirmed that he had spoken with Trump and European leaders but did not name them individually.

In recent weeks, Trump has expressed frustration over Putin’s continued military campaign in Ukraine.

While the White House has not detailed specific measures, Trump told reporters that more “secondary sanctions” are being prepared, targeting Russia’s trade partners, potentially including China.

He also announced higher tariffs on Indian goods, criticizing India’s continued importation of Russian oil.

The Kremlin responded on Tuesday, without naming Trump directly, denouncing tariff threats against its trade partners as “illegitimate.”

Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread destruction, and the displacement of millions.

Moscow is demanding that Ukraine give up more territory and cut ties with the U.S and European Union in exchange for peace, conditions Kyiv has firmly rejected.

Last week, Zelensky urged Western allies to consider pushing for “regime change” in Moscow, calling for a full ceasefire without conditions.

Adding to the tension, Trump revealed that he had ordered two U.S nuclear submarines to reposition following a sharp exchange with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on social media.

In response, the Kremlin said it was ending a moratorium on nuclear-capable intermediate-range missiles, hinting at possible deployments near NATO territory in response to what it claims are U.S missile placements close to Russian borders.

Nigeria Heading For Collapse Without True Federalism, May Not Survive Beyond 2027 – Nnia Nwodo

Former Minister of Information and ex-President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, has issued a stern warning about Nigeria’s political future, saying the country could face breakup before the 2027 general elections if sweeping constitutional reforms are not implemented.

Speaking at the launch of two books authored by veteran journalist Ike Abonyi in Abuja, Nwodo criticized Nigeria’s current system of government, calling it a “unitary constitution disguised as federalism.”

“What we practice today is not federalism but a unitary constitution in disguise,” he said during his keynote address.

Nwodo called for a restructuring of Nigeria’s power structure to give regions greater autonomy over their resources and internal governance.

According to him, this would help ensure a more equitable and efficient system of government.

“Let each region manage its resources and development, while contributing taxes to fund essential federal responsibilities like external defence, foreign affairs, customs, and immigration,” he proposed.

He warned that if these changes are not made before the 2027 elections, the nation might not survive politically intact.

“If we head into 2027 without addressing these structural imbalances, there may be no election, and worse still, no country,” he cautioned.

Highlighting the country’s deteriorating economic conditions, Nwodo pointed to poor infrastructure, youth unemployment, and low life expectancy as signs of systemic failure.

“We are bleeding billions annually due to poor infrastructure. Life expectancy is now one of the lowest globally. Our youth are unemployed and frustrated. Something must give,” he said.

Nwodo advocated for bold reforms in education, digital skills development, and agriculture to tackle unemployment and revive the economy.

“The future lies in education that meets today’s realities. Every Nigerian child should be digitally literate. We must return to agriculture and vocational training,” he urged.

The event was attended by political leaders, academics, and civil society representatives, many of whom echoed Nwodo’s message, calling for urgent restructuring as the only viable path to national stability and growth.

WAEC Appeals For Calm Over Portal Shutdown

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed that its result checker portal is currently unavailable due to unexpected technical issues.

In a notice posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the council acknowledged the disruption and assured candidates that the issue was being addressed with urgency.

“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues,” the statement read.

“However, the council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours.”

The announcement comes just days after WAEC officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on Monday, August 4.

Initially, candidates were able to access their results through the WAEC Direct portal and via SMS. However, since the technical failure, many have been unable to check their results online.

WAEC is appealing to candidates, parents and other stakeholders to remain patient while efforts to restore access is ongoing.

The council emphasized that all necessary technical teams are actively working to bring the system back online within 24 hours.

Despite the temporary setback, WAEC reassured candidates that no results have been lost or compromised.

“We understand the importance of this moment for our candidates and are doing everything possible to restore full service,” the council noted.

The council also urged candidates not to fall victim to unofficial websites or individuals claiming to provide alternative access to WAEC results.

It advised the public to rely only on WAEC’s verified social media pages for updates and information during this period.

Nigerians Demand Investigation As First Lady’s Donations Reach N12.9 Billion In Two Years

Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has emerged as one of the most active First Ladies in Nigeria’s recent history, having reportedly donated an estimated N12.9 billion to humanitarian causes over the past two years.

These donations, ranging from support for displaced families, widows, traders, and victims of natural disasters, were made through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) and, at times, in her personal capacity.

While many have applauded her generosity and commitment to the underprivileged, others, particularly opposition figures and civil society leaders, are raising red flags about transparency, funding sources, and accountability.

Senator Tinubu is no stranger to philanthropy. As a former First Lady of Lagos State and senator representing Lagos Central, she championed initiatives such as the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) and New Era Foundation, aimed at empowering women and youths.

Since becoming First Lady of Nigeria in 2023, her efforts have scaled nationwide.

Among the many donations made between July 2023 and July 2025 include:

N14.25 million to 57 flood-affected families in Abuja (N250,000 each).

N50 million to 1,000 women traders across Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Edo States.

N427.75 million to 1,709 widows and orphans of fallen military personnel.

N500 million for displaced families in Plateau.

N70 million to women farmers in the North-West.

N150 million on scholarships and diaspora health support.

N95 million in cash and rice to Christian communities across Northern Nigeria.

N1 billion, in both 2024 and 2025, toward tuberculosis eradication efforts.

N1.85 billion for a Disability Empowerment Scheme, disbursed to persons with disabilities nationwide.

N1 billion to victims of attacks in Plateau and Benue States.

N100 million to the Five Cowries Art Education Initiative.

N250,000 each to 200 households in Kogi, plus food relief.

In August 2025 alone, N1 billion and relief materials were distributed to flood victims in Niger State.

She also launched a new empowerment scheme for 500 women in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

Senator Tinubu has repeatedly emphasized that the funds used in these initiatives are not from public coffers.

“I do not have vast sums of money, but what I have is meant to bring life… The money I use is not government funds. It is personally raised to help others,” she said.

“The Office of the First Lady has no constitutional allocation. If I kept money for personal gain, it would satisfy my greed. I choose to use what I have for the good of this country. This is not about politics, it’s about love for Nigeria.”

Her Special Adviser on Media, Busola Kukoyi, supported this stance, stating:

“She believes that the most important thing is to build human beings, and she feels the donations will affect human lives directly. She is a lover of humanity, and that is what she has been doing all her life.”

Kukoyi added that funding for the Renewed Hope Initiative comes from a governing board made up of “reputable men and women” across Nigeria, and “friends of the Initiative” who support her vision.

However, not everyone is convinced. Prominent voices in the opposition and civil society are demanding a closer look at the source and legality of the funds.

Tanko Yinusa, spokesman for the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said:

“We are not opposed to her humanitarian services, they are good and welcome. However, she cannot be spending public funds without proper appropriation in the national budget.”

He warned that: “This is part of the impunity we are talking about, and it is enough to warrant questions, if not impeachment, should her husband’s administration fail to account for such expenditures. Nigerians deserve to know the business or businesses she is running if the funds are from her private purse.”

Yinusa also criticized the silence of the National Assembly and anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB):

“That such a level of spending has not attracted investigation is disturbing. It is a serious matter that must be probed. Yes, humanitarian efforts are commendable, but the public has a right to know the source of the funds being used.”

Ralph Nwosu, former National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), expressed similar concerns:

“The question we are asking is, how many such donations did Mrs Tinubu make before becoming First Lady, that she can now afford to donate billions within a few months?”

He argued that: “As decorated as the programmes may appear, the money wasted on palliatives and donations could have created over 500,000 jobs. The multiplier effects would have benefited over two million Nigerians.”

A senior legal adviser within the ruling party, citing the 1999 Constitution, said the issue is not trivial.

He explained that Part I of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution prohibits public officers from accepting or giving gifts in connection with official functions:

“If she claims the money is from her personal purse, then she needs to show us the business source. Otherwise, if it is from donations, then it runs contrary to the law.”

He emphasized that under the Code of Conduct and the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act (CPRO) 2000, such transactions must meet strict conditions, particularly where donations come from private entities.

In her defense, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the criticisms as political distractions.

Seye Oladejo, APC Lagos Publicity Secretary, said “These criticisms are not only unfounded, but they also ignore the longstanding track record of Senator Tinubu’s selfless service to Nigerians, especially the underprivileged and marginalised.”

He continued: “What is wrong with a First Lady showing empathy in action? What is wrong with using her platform to mobilise support for the less privileged? In a time when economic challenges weigh heavily on millions of families, any well-meaning initiative aimed at bringing relief and restoring dignity to lives should be encouraged, not condemned.”

The party concluded that: “Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s humanitarian gestures are not only noble, they are necessary. Her initiatives provide tangible relief and renewed hope for thousands of families across the country.”

EFCC Chairman Denies Coercing NNPCL Boss To Resign

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has denied claims that he forced the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, to resign.

In a statement released Wednesday by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede refuted a report published by the online news platform People’s Gazette, which alleged that he abducted Ojulari and compelled him to step down in Abuja.

Describing the allegations as baseless and damaging, the EFCC chairman has demanded a retraction and public apology from the publication within 48 hours.

While rumours of Ojulari’s resignation continue to circulate, neither the NNPCL boss, the company itself, nor the presidency has issued any official statement on the matter.

Notably, amid the speculation, Ojulari appeared at a Society of Petroleum Engineers event in Lagos on Monday, where he urged African nations to develop bankable energy projects as a solution for long-term energy sustainability.

Olukoyede, reacting firmly to the story, described the report as “uncharitable and capable of casting him in the mould of someone who has ‘betrayed and subverted public trust.’”

His lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), wrote to People’s Gazette demanding immediate redress, stating:

“The publications and the imputations conveyed by them are so damning and cannot be ignored or treated with levity.”

The EFCC chairman is demanding that the online platform:

“Acknowledge your wrongdoing, expressly admit that what you published and imputed against my client are false, apologise for it unreservedly and retract and pull down the stories from your newspaper website and social media handles.”

Olukoyede’s legal team has warned that failure to comply will lead to legal action:

“Writ in the tort of defamation to allow you to prove what your disparagement of my client’s character and reputation, especially in the way of the office he holds as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.”

Disregard Media Reports, Lagos-Calabar Highway Crack Not Structural Failure – Works Minister

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed concerns over a visible crack on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, insisting that it is not a structural failure.

At a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Umahi revealed that he had received over 500 messages from Nigerians expressing concern about the integrity of the road project.

“I have gotten over 500 concerns about a crack they noticed at the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Section 1. And I was wondering whether they’re sending it in good faith, or they’re sending it to mock me to say, look at the project you’re proud of, looking at what is happening. Let me tell you that nothing is happening. Nothing!”

According to him, the affected section is not yet completed, and the crack appeared on the shoulder, not the main carriageway.

“Absolutely, it’s not an issue at all. That section has not been completed. Section 1 is 47.47 kilometres by six. And so you have the main carriageway, you have the shoulder, and so where you notice the crack is some huge section of the shoulder, and not the carriageway with stone base, where we are not presently working on.”

“So ladies and gentlemen, that thing is not a structural failure at all.”

He urged the public to disregard social media reports exaggerating the situation.

“I want the society to disregard that, you know, social media circulation, and to be assured that work is ongoing. In fact, I directed them to go and close these places. So it’s not an issue at all.”

“Disregard it. And there is no section of the completed carriageway that has cracked, and it will not crack.”

Umahi also disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has stopped funding road projects under the tax credit scheme as of August 1, creating a ₦3 trillion shortfall for the Ministry of Works.

Despite this, he assured that no ongoing project under the scheme would be abandoned.

“And for me, he is our President, you know, is a man with a large heart who decided to do that. So, now, we have NNPCL stopping the funding of the projects since the 1st of August. And so, we tabled the matter to FEC, in the last FEC on Thursday.”

“And Mr. President, sitting as the Chairman of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, directed that we should provide another means of funding the project, and to complete it.”

“So, let me announce that Mr. President directed that no NNPCL project should stop, and that an alternative funding mechanism will be put in place to do it.”

“Like I said, NNPCL projects where we need a total of N3 trillion to have them totally completed. So we have compiled them.”

Umahi also warned incompetent contractors to stay away from road projects of such magnitude.

“When we go into the exercise, we not leave the fate of our people in the hands of anybody that wants to play games, playing games to believe that along the line, the federal government will bring money to them, or that they will default, and then they will do call up option, whereby they go to take money from Federal Government.”

The Minister announced plans to install gantries with spikes beneath flyovers to prevent damage from overloaded trucks, especially following recent damage to the Keffi flyover and others along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

“We have a couple of them between Lagos and the Ibadan Bridges, completed in the last administration, but some of the beams have been knocked down. And the beams are the structural elements that are carrying the slab.”

“So when the beam is knocked down, it means that it’s not safe. So for some of such bridges, we have closed them down to vehicular movements, and we are very concerned. It is difficult to moderate these overloaded vehicles.”

“So what we have decided to do is to plant a gantry before the end of the flyover and after the flyover. And of course, we have directed that instead of the engineering mandatory 5.6-metre headroom, which is the design standard, we are increasing beyond the standard to 6.5, to accommodate very undisciplined commuters.”

“This gantry is that if you are 6cm lower than the bottom of every beam in every flyover and we are going to have spikes. If you are coming and then you are overloaded and touch the beams to bring them down. That spike will bring you down first. It will bring down your windscreen and the load so the bridges will be safe.”

Tariff Cut Triggers Widespread Power Outage In Enugu

Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited has announced widespread power outages across parts of Enugu State, attributing the disruption to a reduction in electricity tariffs which has impacted energy supply from the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

In a public notice issued on Monday, the company said the recent tariff review by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission slashed rates for Band A customers from ₦209.50/kWh to ₦160.40/kWh.

This, it explained, led to a sharp decline in energy allocation from EEDC, its parent company.

“Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited wishes to inform its esteemed customers in parts of Enugu State who have been experiencing power outages over the past four days that the situation is due to a significant drop in energy allocation from our parent company, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC,” the company stated.

EEDC reportedly reduced power supply to Mainpower after reviewing the financial impact of the revised tariff structure.

“After analysing the implications of the new tariff, EEDC concluded that implementing it would result in a monthly loss of over ₦1 billion, which makes it impossible for EEDC to meet her obligations to the market.”

“Consequently, and to mitigate these losses, EEDC made the difficult decision to reduce the volume of energy supplied to MEDL,” the announcement explained.

Mainpower expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and assured customers that efforts were underway to address the issue through engagement with key stakeholders.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience this situation has caused our valued customers. Please be assured that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders at the state and federal levels to quickly resolve this issue. We are hopeful that a resolution will be reached within the next 48 hours or soon thereafter,” the company added.

The firm also acknowledged the delayed communication to the public, citing the short notice in receiving details of the situation.

“We also acknowledge that this communication is coming later than expected. The delay was due to the short notice with which we received the full details of the development,” the statement read.

Mainpower appealed for continued patience and cooperation from customers as it works to restore normal power supply.

2027 Presidency: Jonathan Set To Run Again As PDP Outlines Condition For Automatic Ticket

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is preparing to return to the presidential race in 2027, according to a close political ally.

Speaking to DAILY GAZETTE, the ally, also a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) revealed that the move to draft Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate is already in advanced stages, and that the former president has accepted the offer in principle.

According to the source, Jonathan is returning to address Nigeria’s worsening poverty, hardship and growing economic instability.

The push for his return is reportedly driven by senior political figures and elders across the country who believe Jonathan’s leadership brought stability during his time in office.

The source emphasized that PDP leaders began pleading with Jonathan to recontest in an effort to “rescue the country and restore the economy.”

“Many Nigerians have come to realise the mistake they made in not re-electing Dr. Jonathan. They now acknowledge his achievements and are even apologising, pleading with him to return and rescue the country,” said Mallam Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary.

There are reports that Jonathan’s potential return is strategically calculated to allow power shift back to the north by 2031, as he would only be eligible to serve a single four-year term.

“Giving him the opportunity to run for a single term of four years remained the clearest pathway for power to return to the north in 2031,” the source stated.

Jonathan has already begun consultations with key leaders. Last weekend, he reportedly met with former military president General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) at his Hilltop Mansion in Minna, Niger State, to brief him on his plans.

Though IBB’s reaction was not disclosed, the source said the meeting was part of a broader plan to gain northern support.

Jonathan is also currently in the South-South, meeting with stakeholders to secure regional backing. It is believed that his base in the region will pose no challenge to his candidacy.

The PDP is actively pursuing Jonathan’s candidacy, sources confirmed to the BBC Hausa Service.

Senior party leaders, including governors, are said to be involved in convincing him to lead the party against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

“He is a compassionate leader, and as a party that listens to Nigerians, we felt compelled to heed their call,” Abdullahi said.

Sources also confirmed that a PDP delegation recently traveled to The Gambia to meet Jonathan, where they urged him to accept the ticket.

Abdullahi noted that Jonathan has shown interest but has laid down certain conditions.

“He has started listening to the emissaries and is consulting with his inner circle,”
he added.

Jonathan reportedly wants clarity on whether he will face the primaries or be offered the ticket directly and whether the party genuinely values his leadership capacity.

In an exclusive interview, Daniel Woyengikuro, PDP’s National Financial Secretary, described Jonathan as the natural leader of the party and a strong candidate for the presidency.

“Is he not the best candidate for us at this moment? He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now. Aside from Obasanjo, the next person in line is him. Goodluck Jonathan is the national leader of this party,” Woyengikuro said.

He added “Nigeria has reached a point where we need to salvage this country for our generation and for the generations ahead of us. Someone like Goodluck Jonathan is okay.”

Woyengikuro strongly advocated for an automatic ticket for Jonathan:

“For me, that’s what I firmly stand for. You can quote me anywhere: I want him to come. An automatic ticket for him, as it stands now. Because we must salvage both this party and the nation. If Goodluck finally accepts, you will see that the entire dynamics will change. The entire politics of 2027 will change.”

He also commended Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as a vibrant southern leader and potential future presidential candidate.

“Now that we are talking about the Presidency remaining in the south, these are the two main individuals I stand for: Goodluck Jonathan and Seyi Makinde.”

Jonathan’s rumored return has reignited debate over his eligibility, given the 2018 constitutional amendment that bars anyone sworn in twice from being elected President again.

Section 137(3) of the Constitution states:

“A person, who was sworn in to complete the term for which another person was elected as President, shall not be elected to such office for more than a single term.”

However, legal opinions are divided.

Mr. Dayo Akinlaja (SAN) argued that the amendment does not apply to Jonathan, who served under the previous constitutional arrangement.

“Sections 182(3) and 137(3) were introduced in 2017 with a commencement date of 7th June, 2018. Thus, President Jonathan is still entitled to contest in my humble view,”
he explained.

Another lawyer, Mr. Elekwachi Nnabuihe, also argued that the amendment has no retroactive effect.

“Jonathan has only been elected once. If he was legally qualified to contest presidential election in 2015, nothing forbids him from doing so again.”

He added: “The amendment will only apply should the Yar’Adua scenario present itself again.”

DAILY GAZETTE recall that a 2022 Federal High Court ruling in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, also supported Jonathan’s eligibility.

In the case FHC/YNG/CS/86/2022, the court held that the amendment could not be applied retroactively and did not disqualify him from contesting the 2023 election.

Justice Isa Hamma Dashen ruled that Jonathan’s first oath in 2010 was constitutional and not the result of an election victory.

However, Mr. Johnmary Jideobi, a human rights lawyer, warned that Jonathan could exceed the constitutional eight-year limit if elected in 2027.

“If President Jonathan contests again and eventually wins in 2027, he will have exceeded the maximum number of eight years contemplated by the Constitution for any person to occupy the office of the President.”

He cited the Supreme Court ruling in Marwa & Anor v. Nyako Ors (2012), which clarified that no person should serve more than eight years as governor or president.

Chief Olabode George, former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, said Jonathan is well qualified.

“He is very qualified because he did not leave the party. The more the merrier. All those who say they want to contest should wait till 2035. He is the easiest to sell because he has a track record, especially the economic indices Nigeria witnessed during his tenure.”

On the swearing-in controversy, George added:

“It cannot disqualify him because he was sworn in when Umar Yar’Adua died to continue his tenure, and it was because of the Doctrine of Necessity. He did not contest any election; he was sworn in to complete Yar’Adua’s tenure, who died while in office.”
