INEC Receives 151 Party Registration Requests, Begins Screening Ahead Of Bye-Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received 151 letters of intent from various associations seeking registration as political parties, with eight new submissions coming in since late July.

The commission has started shortlisting these associations to identify those that meet the criteria to move forward to the next application stage.

This update was shared by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement released on Thursday.

“Since the 4th update released on 23rd July 2025, the commission has received eight more letters of intent from associations seeking registration as political parties. This brings the number received so far to 151,” Olumekun said.

He added, “Details of the latest requests, indicating their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses and interim leadership of the associations, are uploaded to our website and other online platforms for public information.”

The commissioner also noted, “Meanwhile, having created the portal for party registration, the commission has commenced the shortlisting of the associations that meet the requirements to proceed to the application stage.

Details will be released immediately after the 16 bye-elections in 12 states scheduled for Saturday, 16th August 2025.”

Besides the party registration updates, INEC announced the resumption of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

“The online pre-registration phase will begin on August 18, followed by in-person registration starting August 25. Both processes will run simultaneously until August 30, 2026,” the statement revealed.

According to INEC, the registration will take place at 811 centres across the country.

These include 774 Local Government offices and 37 State and Federal Capital Territory offices, operating from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.

“As earlier announced by the commission, the CVR will resume on 18th August with the online pre-registration. The in-person registration option will follow a week later on 25th August 2025. Thereafter, the two processes will continue simultaneously for a year until 30th August 2026,” Olumekun stated.

He further explained, “The exercise will hold in 811 centres made up of our 774 Local Government, 37 State and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) offices nationwide from 9.00am to 3.00pm (Monday to Friday) every week with the exception of national public holidays.”

To facilitate easy access to registration centres, the commission will deploy an online CVR Live Locator tool.

“The locator will go live a day to the commencement of the CVR on 17th August 2025 and can be accessed at the following address https://cvr.inecnigeria.org/locator,” the statement added.

Furthermore, the commission has uploaded a 38-page document listing all registration centre addresses and provided dedicated telephone help lines for each state.

“Meanwhile, the Commission has today uploaded a 38-page document to our website and other official online platforms indicating the addresses of the 811 in-person registration centres nationwide,” Olumekun said.

He also added, “Similarly, dedicated telephone numbers have been given for each State of the Federation to serve as Help Desk for citizens who require further clarification.”

On the registration process, the commissioner noted, “The procedure for both the online and in-person registrations remains the same as was the case in 2022. Detailed information on the process, including video clips, will once again be released by the commission next week.”

Kano Governor’s Aide Dies After Brutal Machete Attack

Late Sadiq

Sadiq Gentle, a senior aide to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has died from injuries sustained during a violent machete attack by suspected hoodlums at his home.

Gentle, who served as a Senior Special Reporter at the Ministry of History and Culture, passed away on Thursday morning at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, days after the attack.

In response to the tragic incident, Governor Yusuf has directed security agencies to launch a full investigation and apprehend the perpetrators behind the assault.

In a condolence message issued through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor described Gentle as a “dedicated and patriotic social media professional” whose murder has cast a shadow over the state government and the media community.

“The news of the death of Malam Sadiq Gentle hit me with deep sadness and anguish.
He was not only a devoted public servant, but also a man of peace and integrity, who served the state with utmost dedication,” the governor said.

“His gruesome murder is a tragedy and an affront to our collective humanity.”

Governor Yusuf condemned the attack, calling it “heinous, barbaric and utterly unacceptable.”

He also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them of the government’s support during this difficult time.

“The Kano State Government stands in solidarity with all those mourning this painful loss,” he added.

Anambra Gov’ship: I’ll Fix Insecurity, Education, Infrastructure – PDP’s Ezenwafor Vows

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, Chief Jude Ezenwafor, has outlined his priorities if elected, promising to address critical issues including insecurity, education, infrastructure, and economic growth.

Speaking during an interactive session with the League of Anambra Journalists (LAJA) in Abuja, Ezenwafor said his government would adopt practical, results-driven strategies to curb insecurity in the state.

“In Anambra State today there are challenges of insecurity and everyone is concerned about. I intend to adopt a more result-oriented strategy to tackle it,” he said.

The PDP candidate also expressed concern over over-taxation, which he said is stifling businesses and worsening poverty in the state.

“The people of the state are groaning over what I describe as over-taxation, which is crippling businesses and further impoverishing the populace,” he noted.

Ezenwafor promised to create a more business-friendly environment, adding that his administration would ensure greater ease of doing business and promote domestic and external investment.

He further pledged to mobilize the influence and resources of notable Anambra indigenes to improve the state’s economic outlook.

Touching on transportation, the candidate criticized the high cost of air travel into Anambra through the state’s airport, which he said remains higher than neighboring states, despite its importance.

“I wonder why the state government has failed to look into the disproportionate hike in the cost of air tickets for airlines coming into the Anambra airport,” he said.

Ezenwafor, who is still recovering from an assassination attempt in Abuja, recounted how he narrowly escaped death.

The attack occurred shortly after he left the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, where he stopped to buy bitter kola from a roadside vendor.

“Only God saved me from being killed,” he said, describing how gunmen opened fire on him at close range.

On his chances in the November 8 election, Ezenwafor said he’s confident of victory despite what critics say about his profile.

“Contrary to insinuations about my capability, I have made quite an appreciable impact in business, politics, and governance,” he stated.

“My election plan is highly coded and is so unique that by the time I win, others will need to come to me for tutorials on how to contest elections,” he added.

He also noted the rare unity in the PDP’s primary process, pointing out that for the first time in the party’s history in Anambra, there were no petitions or court disputes following the primary election.

Responding to questions about the zoning arrangement in Anambra which many believe favors Anambra South, Ezenwafor, from Anambra Central, said the PDP never formally adopted zoning, and that it was an initiative of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

“In all the previous governorship elections in Anambra State, candidates from different zones had always participated,” he said.
“My emergence is more of a divine call. It is not disruptive in any way.”

Ezenwafor maintained that he is not desperate about winning at all costs.

“I am not desperate about it. I do not see the governorship election as a do-or-die affair. But I will give my best to it,” he declared.

However, he noted that if there were irregularities in the electoral process, he would challenge the outcome in court.

“If at the end of the contest, our people choose another person as their choice, I will accept their decision. However, if there is a flaw in the process, I will not hesitate to go to court to seek redress,” he concluded.

El‑Rufai Still With Us, Just Playing A Script – APC Chieftain

Dr. Bashir Jamoh, a senior figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Director-General of NIMASA, has reassured party members that former Kaduna State Governor Malam Nasir El‑Rufai remains an important stakeholder in the APC, despite defecting to the Social Democratic Party.

Addressing journalists on Thursday in Kaduna, Jamoh emphasized that while El‑Rufai has mentioned affiliations with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), it would be premature to bid him farewell.

“As far as I’m concerned, this is my opinion, Malam Nasir El‑Rufai is still with us. Yes, he mentioned his membership of the SDP. Yes, he mentioned the ADC. But we are yet to get to the point of bidding him farewell.

“We still consult him. We seek his expertise, his knowledge, and his advice. Forget the politics for a moment, this is about public service. Whenever we need his advice, he gives it. And if he refuses to give it when asked, I believe God will ask him why.”

Jamoh described El‑Rufai as a “political institution,” indispensable to Kaduna’s political narrative:

“You cannot disown your child of eight years. He was Minister under the PDP. He joined CPC, which merged into APC and governed this state for eight years. He’s a part of our political history.”

Addressing concerns about El‑Rufai’s potential move to the ADC, Jamoh was unperturbed:

“We don’t even know who is who in the ADC yet. Yes, we hear he is the North‑West leader of the ADC, but as far as Kaduna is concerned, they are underperforming.”

He stressed that the real question is whether any party can rival APC’s dominance:

“Are you talking about El‑Rufai or the ADC? Nasir El‑Rufai cannot contest for governorship again. That chapter is closed. So, the question is whether ADC or any opposition party can defeat the APC in this state, and I say no.”

Using a local proverb, he added: “When you grind your corn, you can’t throw the whole thing into a pot because it’ll be too heavy. APC is too heavy for any party here.

Maybe you don’t know Kaduna politics very well. Go and take an independent survey today. Who stands a chance of winning the gubernatorial election after Uba Sani? Check opposition parties, who among them can challenge APC? We have more than 10 capable candidates.”

While admitting the party isn’t without flaws, Jamoh encouraged unity and perseverance:

“Yes, there are challenges. I agree. But we are addressing them. That’s why I’m speaking to you now. Don’t fall for the propaganda that people are leaving in droves.”

“Don’t throw away what you have because you think the opposition can beat APC. Remember where you invested. One day, you will reap the benefit of that investment.”

Obi Lifted LP To Its Current Status, Never Used Party Funds For Campaign – Former Treasurer

Oluchi Opara

A former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah, has denied claims that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, misused party funds during his campaign.

Speaking on The Morning Brief on Channels Television, Oparah debunked allegations made by LP chieftain Abayomi Arabambi, who had accused Obi of funding his campaign with party resources.

“There was nothing of such. Mr. Obi never spent any money meant for the party,” she stated.

“In fact, he lifted the party from zero level to where it is today.”

Oparah explained that Obi not only personally financed his campaign activities but also helped the financially struggling party upon his arrival.

“Mr. Obi fulfilled every righteousness financially towards the Labour Party. There was never a time he asked for a dime from the party, unlike other political parties will do,” she said.

She added that when Obi joined the party, it was deeply in debt and couldn’t pay staff salaries. Obi stepped in with both financial support and structure.

“He spent a lot of money on the Labour Party. We have programmes that Mr. Obi solely financed by himself. Obi spent from his money because the Labour Party did not have a dime,” Oparah noted.

She also explained that every candidate runs a separate campaign account and that the Labour Party’s own accounts remained distinct for party use.

On the issue of accountability, she turned attention to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), criticizing the party for its governance and urging the public to hold the government accountable rather than spreading unsubstantiated claims about Obi.

“As far as I am concerned, Mr. Obi was the only person who showed interest in contesting on the platform of the Labour Party,” she emphasized.

“So, anyone claiming whatsoever should come out to show us the particular account to which they paid whatever thing they say they paid to the Labour Party.”

Oparah further defended Obi’s integrity, describing him as a consistent philanthropist whose charitable nature predates his presidential ambition.

“Anyone that knows Mr. Obi very well knows that his act of charity is five and six, like the air he breathes,” she said.

JUST IN: Keyamo Orders NCAA To Place KWAM 1 On No-Fly List Over Airport Safety Breach

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to place King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) on a no-fly list following a serious safety breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

According to the minister, the directive includes notifying both domestic and international airlines, with a stern warning that any operator who violates the order risks losing their licence.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 7, involved KWAM 1 and two ValueJet pilots, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, whose licences have already been suspended by the NCAA as investigations begin.

Reacting via his official X handle @fkeyamo, the minister condemned the altercation, labeling the behavior of all parties involved as reckless and dangerous.

“I have received reports from all the relevant Aviation agencies regarding the altercation between the staff and crew of ValueJet and Kwam 1 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Tuesday, August 7, 2025. I have also received video footages of the incident,” he posted.

Keyamo described the entire incident as a “temporary loss of sanity and control” on both sides, warning that such lapses could have had deadly consequences.

“From all the details so far received, my preliminary impression is that it was obviously a case of temporary loss of sanity and control on both sides which could have led to serious fatalities,” he stated.

He debunked claims by KWAM 1’s representatives, revealing that the singer repeatedly moved on the tarmac to block an aircraft from taxiing, which he described as an act resembling a “hostage situation.”

“Contrary to what the agents of KWAM 1 has said, he constantly moved his position on the tarmac to actually blocked the aircraft from taxiing to take position on the runway for take-off. This is totally unacceptable behaviour.”

“The issue of whether he was carrying water or alcohol is not even in issue at this point. It is the physical blockage of the aircraft from taxiing that is the reprehensible conduct here which akin to a hostage situation. The actual video footage showing this recalcitrant behaviour is hereby attached.”

Keyamo was also critical of the pilots’ response, insisting that they should not have attempted to taxi while an unruly individual remained dangerously close to the aircraft.

“On the other hand, no amount of provocation should make the Captain and Pilot of an aircraft begin to taxi without ensuring that the security personnel have safely moved an unruly passenger away that is standing in front of an aircraft.”

He pointed out that both parties violated International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) safety standards.

“Both sides breached standard safety protocol as required by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).”

While commending the NCAA for suspending the pilots’ licences, the minister questioned why no immediate action was taken against KWAM 1.

“I have noted that the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has temporarily suspended the license of the Captain and the Pilot pending full investigation. I commend them for their proactive action.”

“However, I have also questioned their sense of justice in only acting against one party and not the other party. What applies to the goose must also to the gander. That is one of the tenets of Justice I have preached all my life. I will not sit idly by and allow this to pass.”

As a result, he ordered the NCAA to place KWAM 1 on a no-fly list pending the outcome of the investigation and instructed all airlines to comply.

“In the circumstance, I have aso directed the NCAA to place KWAM 1 on a no-fly list pending further and full investigation, just like the Captain and Pilot. All airlines, both domestic and International should immediately be informed of this directive and anyone who flouts this directive risk withdrawal of their operating licence.”

Court Orders Bank, Police To Pay N85m Fine For Freezing Customer’s Account In A Landmark Judgment

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has awarded ₦85 million in damages against Zenith Bank Plc and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for unlawfully freezing a customer’s account without proper legal authority.

Justice S. U. Bature, who delivered the judgment, also ordered that both the bank and the police publish a public apology to the affected customer, Abhulimen & Co, in two national newspapers and on their official websites.

The case was brought before the court by Mr. Paulyn O. Abhulimen, SAN, through the law firm Kehinde & Partners LP.

The suit, with case number FCT/HC/CV/2194/2024, named Zenith Bank and the Nigeria Police Force as the 1st and 2nd defendants, respectively.

Abhulimen explained to the court that she discovered her firm’s account had been restricted when she was unable to perform transactions in 2024.

Upon inquiry, she was informed that a Post-No-Debit (PND) restriction had been placed on the account, allegedly based on an order obtained by the NPF from a Magistrate Court in Mararaba Gurku, Nasarawa State.

The judge firmly rejected the legality of the Magistrate Court’s order and criticized the bank’s compliance with it.

“The said account was opened at the 1st defendant’s Transcorp Hilton branch, here in Abuja, and the 2nd defendant is also domiciled in Abuja,” Justice Bature noted.

He questioned why a court in Nasarawa State was approached to issue an order affecting an account and entities based in Abuja.

“The rationale behind seeking the said order at a Magistrate Court under the Nasarawa State jurisdiction cannot be understood, and the 2nd defendant did not appear to be able to give any explanation or reason as to why they decided to follow this line of action.”

Citing constitutional provisions, Justice Bature held that the Magistrate Court acted far beyond its legal authority.

“The said Magistrate Court lacked the territorial jurisdiction to entertain the application.”

“And, regarding the substantive jurisdiction of the court to make the order, it is clear from the provisions of Section 251 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended), that matters relating to banks and banking transactions are within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, and matters relating to banker-customer disputes are jointly under the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, State High Courts and High Court of the FCT.”

He emphasized that the Magistrate Court had no legal right to entertain or grant an application to freeze a customer’s bank account.

“The legal department of the 1st defendant, being lawyers, should have been aware of this position of the law and taken the appropriate action in this situation, as they ought not to have obeyed the court order in the first place.

“Thus, the 1st defendant was wrong to have placed a PND on the account of the claimant based on the order of a court lacking the requisite jurisdiction to do so. I so hold,” he ruled.

Justice Bature also took issue with the bank’s failure to notify its customer before freezing the account, calling it a serious breach of the banker-customer duty of care.

“It is the humble opinion of this honourable court that, the 1st defendant owed the claimant a duty of care of duly informing her that her account had been frozen.

“The 1st defendant placed a Post-No-Debit on the account of the claimant’s firm, but same was not communicated to the claimant until she encountered difficulties in the use of the said account.

“The failure of the 1st defendant to inform the claimant of the state of affairs on her account amounts to negligence on the part of the 1st defendant and hence, a breach of duty of care and due diligence owed to the claimant. I so hold.”

As a result of these violations, the court issued a multi-pronged ruling:

– The PND order on the firm’s account must be immediately lifted;

– Public apologies must be published in two national dailies and on the websites of both defendants;

– ₦60 million is to be paid to the claimant as general damages for the emotional, psychological, and financial hardship caused;

– An additional ₦25 million is awarded as cost of the lawsuit.

“The defendants are hereby ordered to jointly and severally pay the sum of N60million to the claimant as general damages for the embarrassment, psychological trauma, financial distress, emotional stress and grave inconveniences suffered by the claimant due to the defendants’ actions.

“The defendants are hereby ordered to jointly and severally pay the sum of N25m to the claimant as cost of this action,” the court held.

Why I Was Removed As Governor – Ngige Makes Shocking Revelation

Former Anambra State Governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has opened up about the circumstances surrounding his controversial removal from office in 2006.

In a recent interview, he claimed that his refusal to appoint Chris Uba, a powerful political figure in Anambra at the time, as his deputy was the main reason for his ousting.

Ngige, who remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), though currently on sabbatical, said he holds no regrets about how events unfolded, attributing it all to divine will.

“I know those who were removing me. They showed their hands. They gave me conditions, and I said I won’t do them,” Ngige said.

He recalled that the late Senator Ibrahim Mantu served as a mediator, bringing him the list of demands from political powerbrokers.

“Mantu came to me and told me the things I was supposed to do. He said somebody sent him. I said, ‘Tell the person I would not do it.’ He came back and said, ‘Let us go and see the person.’ And the person told me the major condition would be that I should make Chris Uba my deputy governor.”

Ngige said he declined the condition for two key reasons:

“First, if I made him deputy governor, he would have immunity and could walk into my office and shoot me. If he shot me, nothing would happen. Stories would be told that my orderly did it by accident.

Second, the people of Anambra would revolt against me. That’s the even more important reason because the Anambra people have seen all those people and they didn’t hide themselves. They came and burnt down the state.”

According to him, the violence was intense and targeted at critical institutions:

“They burned down the House of Assembly, burned down the governor’s office, burned down the Anambra Broadcasting Service, burned down the Anambra Education Commission headquarters, and so many things. And the people did not hide themselves.”

Ngige added that the takeover attempt was even broadcast on national television:

“They even made a broadcast on AIT and said that I should not enter the state again, that they have taken over. So I said that these people who said they are taking over and burnt the place are not the people who should come and govern you. I said no. You can take my seat. No problem. God is in charge.”

As a devout Catholic, Ngige said he accepted his removal as part of a divine plan:

“I’m happy with all that transpired because that is how God willed it. When I was removed from government, somebody came to me crying, saying if it were him, he would commit suicide. I told him, ‘I can go and get a rope for you.’ Because this is what God wants.”

He explained that he refused to challenge the court ruling that removed him because he didn’t want further violence in the state:

“I wasn’t born a governor. I was born Nwabueze Ngige, son of a carpenter, my father was a foreman of works at PWD.”

Despite his current absence from active politics, Ngige reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC:

“I am still in APC. I am just on sabbatical.”

Ngige, a trained medical doctor, also addressed his controversial decision to employ so-called “bad boys” during his time as governor. According to him, it was a strategic move to fight insecurity and restore order in the state.

“To secure your place is money, and that is why the originators of budgets did what they call security votes. But many governors and Chief Executive of states and even their deputy think that security money is pocket money, no.”

He gave an example of how he introduced vigilante services across communities in Anambra with full legislative backing:

“I took a bill to Anambra State House of Assembly in 2003 as I come for vigilante services in every community, AVS bill, they passed it… We bond together now, we eat together. We eat dinner together two times a month, and we discuss everything about the state. So they passed it.”

He then described how communities were told to identify both candidates for employment and local troublemakers:

“So each community in Anambra State then we told them to go and give us men, as a matter of fact, give us those who are bad boys, write out the names of the bad boys separately, and then write out the names of those you want us to employ.”

“They wrote them, so we gave employment to all of them and brought the bad boys and said, look, you people are bad boys, look at the list, any false movement, you are dead, but you owe us a duty to show us other bad boys, even those who have committed crime here and run out of the state.”

The program reportedly had high incentives and tight monitoring:

“And they complied, and we paid them handsome amount of money, 30,000 Naira in 2003, 2004, 2005. That 30,000 Naira is the equivalent of about three million now. We paid, we gave them food two times a day. We provided them busses. We provided them recharge card money, so the people were ready to defend their state.”

He claimed the vigilantes even extended their operations outside Anambra:

“In fact, when my police were withdrawn, they made their security available for me. They did. They secured their state. Sometimes they go on operation to Aba (Abia State) to hotel and we go and catch people who have committed one offense in Anambra before.”

Ngige concluded by emphasizing the true purpose of security votes, noting that most governors misuse the funds:

“That is what security fund is all about. But many governors don’t spend security votes. It’s pocket money for them, it’s money for buying property.”
