Tension In Enugu As PDP Candidate Accuses Minister Of Disrupting Bye-Election; Nnaji Denies Involvement

The political atmosphere in Enugu grew tense on Saturday following an accusation by PDP candidate, Sam Ngene, who alleged that the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, disrupted the ongoing by-election in Enugu South Urban Constituency with the aid of hoodlums, a claim the minister promptly refuted.

The by-election is the result of a long legal and political battle, after the State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal nullified the March 18, 2023 election results, ordering a rerun in eight polling units, affecting 4,618 registered voters.

Previous attempts to conduct the rerun had failed.

On february 3, 2024, the rerun was cancelled due to alleged missing result sheets.

On February 14, 2024, it was abandoned after violence erupted.

While on June 8, 2024, the rerun election was postponed indefinitely, until Saturday’s fresh exercise.

The race has effectively become a two-man contest between Labour Party candidate, Barr. Bright Ngene, currently in prison over a community-related matter and PDP’s Sam Ngene, a former member of the House of Assembly.

Speaking at his polling unit, Sam Ngene alleged that the exercise was once again under threat from powerful political figures.

“We are here as PDP to conduct this election because we know that this is my stronghold, this is my ward, and my polling unit is one of the places that had this problem,” Ngene said.

“The first time, it was Senator Kelvin Chukwu from Nkanu West and some other people who were not supposed to be here. They disrupted this election. The second time, the same thing happened. This third time again, we are announcing that the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Uche Nnaji, is also here, and I am wondering why he came. He came in here with hoodlums, with intimidation, disrupting this election and making sure that it does not hold.”

“Ask yourself, who are we even contesting with? Somebody is behind bars for fraudulent activity, convicted and sentenced, and he is still on the ballot. Is that supposed to be so? The answer is no. The constitution is very clear: if you are convicted or if you are an ex-convict, you cannot stand for any election. You can’t even vote. You have lost your freedom completely,” he stated.

In his reaction, Minister Uche Nnaji rejected the accusation, maintaining that his presence at the polling unit was lawful, as a leader and representative of his party.

“I am an APC man, and that is why I was appointed. I remain an APC man. I am the leader of APC in the state, and on that basis, I am the polling unit agent of APC. You can see my tag, so I am here rightfully,” Nnaji said.

He also denied bringing thugs to the venue.

“I don’t carry hoodlums. I carry policemen, army, and DSS—people that are friendly to the public, people that are law-abiding, people mandated by law to protect lives and property. That is what I use,” the minister stated.

Addressing the rising tension, Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, appealed to stakeholders and voters for restraint.

“You can see the good number of political bigwigs present here today from the PDP, APC, and Labour Party. Many people are here, either to vote or to observe. However, according to one of our Corps members presiding over this election, some voters are saying they will not cast their votes unless the candidate currently in prison; who they allege isn’t constitutionally qualified is disqualified from contesting,” Dr. Chukwu said.

“So, I am pleading with members of the public and the good people of Enugu to kindly allow us to conclude this process today. This is my prayer. Let all of us conduct ourselves properly, regardless of our positions in society. This is the fourth time we are coming out for this election, and I am appealing to everyone to cooperate.”

“I honestly do not know why this place is even this crowded; it is not supposed to be so. Therefore, I am pleading with all stakeholders in Enugu State; let us not create problems in this election. Please, that is my prayer and my request,” he added.

Edo Bye-Election: PDP Agents Missing In Several Polling Units

Agents of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were noticeably absent from several polling units in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State during Saturday’s by-election.

A visit to polling stations at Oluku, Owina, and Eronseyi Primary School, among others, revealed that only agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were present to monitor the election process.

There was no visible presence of PDP representatives at these locations.

The absence of PDP agents raised concerns about the level of participation and representation by the party in the affected areas.

In response, Toni Azeigbemi, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Edo State, downplayed the issue, insisting that the party was fully participating in the by-election.

“We have our polling agents on the ground in many units. After all, Peter Obi of the Labour Party won in several polling units during the 2023 presidential election, even without agents in most of them,” Azeigbemi said.

Despite the PDP’s assurance, eyewitness reports from various polling stations continued to show a lack of party agent representation in key locations across the constituency.

APC Demands Cancellation Of Kano Bye-Election Over Widespread Violence

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the Shanono/Bagwai State Constituency by-election and the Ghari Constituency rerun in Kano State, citing widespread violence and disruption by armed thugs.

According to the APC, the electoral process in the affected areas was marred by chaos, with over 200 suspected thugs reportedly arrested by police across the state during the exercise.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party alleged that security agencies were overwhelmed in several polling units, forcing voters to flee due to violence and intimidation.

“The APC calls on INEC to immediately cancel the by-elections for Shanono/Bagwai and Ghari constituencies due to extreme violence and electoral disruption caused by armed thugs,” the statement read.

The party said it had received verifiable reports from affected areas, indicating that the integrity of the electoral process had been severely compromised.

It warned that continuing the election under such conditions would undermine democratic values and set a dangerous precedent for future polls.

“Allowing this process to proceed under such conditions of utter brigandage and violent voter intimidation contradicts the principles of free, fair, and credible elections,” the APC added.

He reassured the public that the situation remained under control and that INEC was committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible by-election.

JUST IN: Top Ansaru Terrorist Leader Captured

Nigeria’s security agencies have arrested Abu Baraa, a top commander and alleged leader of the terrorist group Ansaru, responsible for numerous high-profile attacks across the country.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, announced the development at a press briefing held at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja on Saturday. He was flanked by all the service chiefs and heads of Nigeria’s intelligence community.

Ribadu described the arrest as the result of a high-risk, intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation, which had been in motion since May. Abu Baraa was ultimately captured in July, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism.

“I’m pleased to inform Nigerians that we have successfully carried out a complex operation that led to the arrest of key leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan — commonly known as Ansaru, the Nigerian affiliate of Al-Qaeda,” Ribadu said.

Ansaru emerged in January 2012, originally splitting from Boko Haram and presenting itself as a more “humane” alternative.

However, its activities quickly turned deadly, focusing on attacks against Nigerian security forces, civilians, and government infrastructure.

Ribadu explained that the group openly aligned itself with global jihadist movements, adopting the rising sun emblem of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Over the years, Ansaru established urban sleeper cells and rural strongholds, especially around the Kainji National Park region, spanning Niger and Kwara States, and even extending toward Benin Republic.

Abu Baraa’s capture is considered one of the most important since the arrest of Khalid al-Barnawi in 2016, a previous Ansaru leader who had been designated a global terrorist by the U.S.

Department of State in 2012 alongside Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and Ansaru founder Abubakar Adam Kambar.

While it is not yet confirmed if Baraa officially succeeded al-Barnawi, his role within the group has been described as central to its operations in recent years.

Ribadu emphasized that this arrest represents a major milestone in dismantling the Ansaru network and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rooting out terrorism and restoring peace across Nigeria.

this is a critical victory in our broader national security efforts. we will continue to track down and neutralize threats to our country,” ribadu assured.

Gov. Mbah Urges Discipline Among Young Athletes At Christian Chukwu Memorial Match

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called on young athletes, particularly aspiring footballers, to embrace discipline as a cornerstone of their careers.

He made this call during a novelty match held in honour of late Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwu, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

The event, which drew a large crowd of football fans, featured a friendly match between Ex-Rangers International players and Enugu All Stars.

Though the game ended in a goalless draw, the atmosphere was charged with emotion and respect for Chukwu, who passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 74.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Mbah, the Commissioner for Labour and Employment, Dr. Felix Nnamani, described the match as a fitting tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on Nigerian and African football.

“The life and legacy of Christian Chukwu continue to inspire us,” said Mbah.

“He was not just a football icon, but a disciplined and hardworking ambassador for the game, Enugu State, Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.”

Mbah emphasized that Chukwu’s generation set a high standard of professionalism and discipline, qualities he urged today’s young players to emulate.

He also pledged the state’s commitment to preserving Chukwu’s legacy.

“Enugu State Government, under my administration, will ensure that this great man is immortalised. His contributions to football will never be forgotten,” Mbah stated.

The governor noted the presence of many former national team players, retired professionals, and fans at the event as evidence of the deep respect Chukwu commanded throughout his life.

“This overwhelming turnout speaks volumes about the kind of leader and person he was—disciplined, committed, and a unifying figure,” he added.

Chukwu’s former teammate from the Green Eagles, Dominic Nwobodo, popularly known as Alhaji, described him as a “captain who led with love and unity.”

“He gave his all, both as a player and later as a coach, ensuring that football brought joy to Nigerians and continued to grow,” Nwobodo said.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Victor Atuonwu, former Chief Liaison Officer between Rangers International and the Enugu State Government, praised Chukwu’s patriotism and lifelong dedication to the sport.

“The match is a worthy tribute to a deserving legend, whose legacy continues to uplift football not just in Nigeria but globally,” Atuonwu noted.

A minute of silence was observed in Chukwu’s memory, followed by prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Known affectionately as “Chairman,” Christian Chukwu captained the Nigerian national team (then the Green Eagles) from 1974 to 1980.

He led Nigeria to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 and was also part of the squads that finished as runners-up in 1976 and 1978.

In his coaching career, Chukwu managed the Kenyan national team in 1998 and later coached Nigeria from 2003 to 2005, reaching the semifinals of the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. He also managed Enugu Rangers and served as the club’s General Manager and CEO.

FG Urges Canada To Withdraw ‘Erroneous’ Terrorist Label On APC, PDP

The Federal Government of Nigeria has demanded an immediate retraction of what it termed a false and damaging classification of some Nigerian political parties as “terrorist organisations” by a Canadian court.

In a statement issued on Friday by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian government expressed “deep concerns” over the ruling, warning that it could be misinterpreted as support for politically motivated narratives against the country.

The controversial designation stems from a refugee case involving Douglas Egharevba, a Nigerian national who arrived in Canada in September 2017 and applied for asylum under the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

In its judgment, the Canadian court reportedly linked Egharevba’s affiliation with some political groups in Nigeria to alleged acts of terrorism.

Nigeria described the court’s sweeping characterization as “baseless, reckless, and unacceptable interference” in its internal affairs, stating that such a ruling undermines democratic values and misrepresents the nature of its political institutions.

“The court made a sweeping accusation against the entire membership of a political party that has produced three democratically elected presidents, rather than focusing on any individual acts,” the statement read.

“The implication is that all members of these parties are potential terrorists, this is not only false but dangerous.”

The Nigerian government emphasized that its political parties function within the bounds of its constitutional and legal frameworks, and play a critical role in its vibrant democracy.

“To associate legitimate political organisations with terrorism without credible evidence is a grave misrepresentation that could incite tension and erode international confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system,” the Ministry stated.

Calling for a full retraction of the court’s conclusion, the Federal Government also encouraged Canadian authorities to engage Nigeria diplomatically to resolve the matter.

It reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to global efforts to combat terrorism and has made substantial progress in tackling extremist threats within its borders.

Furthermore, the government advised Nigerian citizens seeking asylum abroad to refrain from making unverified or damaging allegations against their country for personal gain.

“Such claims not only jeopardize diplomatic relations but also risk painting a false narrative about Nigeria’s political landscape,” the statement concluded.

‘We Were Sexually Abused, Abandoned’ – Nigerians Recount Ordeal After Rescue From CAR Mining Camp

Twelve Nigerian men recently repatriated from the Central African Republic (CAR) have shared disturbing accounts of their ordeal in the hands of Chinese mining employers, alleging unpaid wages, abandonment, and sexual abuse during their 20-month stay.

Their emotional testimonies came during a visit to the headquarters of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in Abuja, following their safe return to the country.

The group had previously gone viral in a video pleading for rescue.

According to a statement signed by NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdurrahman Balogun, the workers were formally received by NIDCOM Chairperson, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, alongside other officials on Friday.

The leader of the group, Igorigo Freeborn, recounted their harrowing experiences, including being owed 11 months’ salaries and subjected to sexual abuse.

“We were homosexually abused by our Chinese employers in CAR. I am not ashamed to say this, because others need to learn from it. We were treated inhumanely and left to suffer in the forest without food or pay,” he said.

Freeborn, who admitted to once doubting Nigeria’s ability to protect its citizens, expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all government agencies involved in their rescue.

“For someone like me who had little hope in Nigeria, this intervention gave us life again,” he added.

The men alleged that after months of grueling labour under harsh conditions, they were left stranded in the bush without food or shelter. Their employers not only withheld their wages but also subjected them to physical and psychological abuse.

Their plight drew attention from several federal institutions.

With the support of the Presidency, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NIDCOM, the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui, and other agencies, the workers were evacuated, provided medical attention, and brought back home.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa condemned the abuse as “utterly inhumane” and pledged that the matter would be thoroughly investigated, with justice pursued through appropriate diplomatic and legal channels.

She encouraged the returnees to work with NIDCOM in its ongoing awareness campaigns against irregular migration.

“We will not stop until justice is served. What you went through is unacceptable and we commend your bravery in speaking out,” she assured them.

To support their reintegration, NIDCOM provided cash relief to each of the returnees and appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and private sector stakeholders to assist them further.

A separate donation was made by Perchstone and Greys, presented by Toyin Adenugba on behalf of Dr. Tolu Aderemi, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the JAALS Foundation.

The funds, Adenugba said, were intended to serve as a seed to help the men rebuild their lives and create opportunities for themselves and their families.

NCAA Clears Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport For Commercial Operations

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has officially approved the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State, to commence commercial flight operations.

The regulatory approval was issued on Friday under Part 12.15.17 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs) and includes the granting of an Interim Aerodrome Operational Permit, enabling the airport to begin scheduled commercial air transport services.

With this clearance, the airport is set to welcome its first commercial activities, including two weekly cargo flights from London by a leading international aviation firm.

The Gateway Airport has also been designated as an alternate airport to Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, potentially easing congestion and improving logistics in the region.

In addition to cargo services, passenger flights are expected to launch soon, with initial routes targeting Abuja and Port Harcourt, two key hubs in Nigeria’s domestic aviation network.

The approval is a major boost for Ogun State’s ambition to become a strategic hub for both agriculture and aviation.

Authorities believe the airport, located in the heart of the state’s Special Agro-Processing Zone, will help stimulate exports, create jobs, and support broader economic development.
