Nurses Have Suspended Nationwide Strike, Says Health Minister

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has officially suspended its seven-day warning strike, the Ministry of Health announced, after talks with government officials.

According to Health Minister Ali Pate, the decision came following a closed-door meeting in Abuja where the government and union leaders reached key agreements.

“Nurses have suspended strike,” the minister told journalists after the meeting, confirming that terms were agreed upon between both parties.

Although the minister made the announcement, union leadership has not yet addressed the public following the meeting.

The nurses and midwives had launched their nationwide warning strike on July 29, pressing for demands including better welfare packages, fairer allowances, and improved working conditions in federal health institutions.

The action was originally scheduled to last until August 5.

2027: INEC To Begin Online Voter Pre-Registration August 18

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will begin with online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, as part of early preparations for the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit from the management of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to INEC headquarters in Abuja.

“The nationwide continuous voter registration is scheduled to commence in about three weeks, with the online pre-registration of voters scheduled for the 18th of August,” said Yakubu.

He further revealed that physical (in-person) registration will kick off one week later, enabling citizens without internet access to also participate.

Yakubu explained that the CVR is a key part of INEC’s broader strategic plans, which include preparations for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, and the next general elections in 2027.

The INEC boss used the meeting to reaffirm the commission’s commitment to partnering with the NOA to enhance voter education, public awareness, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to improve the electoral process.

“I am particularly glad that this meeting is at the instance of the DG in furtherance of the longstanding partnership between INEC and the National Orientation Agency,” Prof. Yakubu said, highlighting the role of NOA in mobilising voters at the grassroots level.

During the visit, NOA Director-General Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu described the agency’s current transformation efforts aimed at positioning it as a stronger player in advancing Nigeria’s democracy.

He noted that NOA is deploying a hybrid outreach strategy that combines traditional methods with modern technology.

He said the agency had revamped its outreach strategy using both traditional and digital tools, including weekly newsletters, AI-driven feedback mechanisms, and a network of over 818 local offices nationwide.

Tinubu Encouraging Misgovernance By Rewarding Errant Governors – Former APC Leader Lukman

Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and now a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s approach to state governance, accusing him of rewarding governors who mismanage public funds.

Speaking during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, Lukman argued that the president’s failure to enforce accountability has allowed state governors to continue their poor financial practices unchecked.

“Yes, the president has said the right thing, but what is he doing to ensure that governors do what they need to do?” Lukman queried.

“The president can do something, but what I see him doing is to reward them for doing the wrong things.”

His remarks come shortly after President Tinubu publicly urged governors to prioritize poverty alleviation and ensure governance delivers tangible benefits to citizens.

But Lukman believes the president’s words have not been backed by meaningful actions.

According to him, state governors have maintained their dominance over political party structures, effectively shielding themselves from oversight.

“Once we have a system where the structure of the party is subordinated to them, they will continue with this arrogance, and continue to be unaccountable and convert public resources as if it is their personal property,” he said.

Lukman also criticized the APC’s approach to political expansion, particularly its acceptance of defecting opposition governors without holding them to clear standards of performance or accountability.

“When your recruitment policy in your party is blindly informed in a way that all you want is for people to come into your party without giving them the conditions that need to happen for them to be accountable to their people, the objectives of many of them become to be where they are and not to deliver services,” he stated.

Turning to the state of the APC, Lukman did not hold back. He accused the party leadership of betraying the confidence reposed in them by members and citizens alike.

“In APC, we invested every trust in the leaders and at the end of the day, leaders betrayed that trust, and that is why APC is damaged today, whereby it is worse than the PDP,” he said.

Now active in the opposition, Lukman said the ADC intends to restore integrity to public office through more accountable governance structures.

He explained that the party is working toward creating an internal system that compels elected officials to align with the party’s manifesto and goals.

“The mistake many of us make is to imagine that leaders are rational and, left on their own, they will do the right thing. Our objective is to organise the party in such a way that governance is accountable to the party and aligned with the manifesto,” he added.

Trump Slaps New Tariffs On Nearly 70 Countries, Targets Canada With 35% Duty

US President, Donald Trump, has announced a sweeping set of new tariffs affecting nearly 70 countries, escalating his push to overhaul global trade in favor of American interests.

Among the most notable moves is a sharp 35% tariff on goods imported from neighboring Canada.

The tariffs, formalized in a new executive order, were initially set to take effect immediately but will now begin in one week for most countries, according to a statement from the White House.

This delay is seen as a window for last-minute negotiations.

The administration says the move is meant to assert U.S. economic dominance, bolster domestic manufacturing, and protect American exporters.

Still, the aggressive shift has sparked concerns about inflation and broader economic consequences in the United States, which remains the world’s largest economy.

The new duties follow an earlier round of 10% tariffs imposed in April, which Trump called “reciprocal” in response to what he views as unfair trade practices.

The latest tariffs vary by country, with some reaching as high as 41%.

A further 40% duty will apply to any goods “transshipped” through third countries in an attempt to sidestep the U.S tariff wall, the executive order states.

Canada, which had been subject to a 25% tariff, now faces a 35% duty starting Friday.

Trump’s order singles out Canada’s “retaliation” to earlier U.S actions and accuses the country of failing to “cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl and other illicit drugs.”

The decision also follows Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement that his government plans to recognize a Palestinian state during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September, a move Trump had warned could carry trade consequences.

In response, Carney said his administration was “disappointed” by the tariff hike and defended Canada’s efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and bolster border security.

Trump offered more time to Mexico, another major trading partner, delaying a proposed tariff increase from 25% to 30% for 90 days following talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Some exemptions remain in place under the North American trade pact, shielding various Canadian and Mexican goods from the new duties.

Despite recent bilateral agreements with Japan, the European Union, and other partners, the long-term effectiveness of Trump’s trade strategy remains uncertain.

“No doubt about it, the executive order and related agreements concluded over the past few months tears up the trade rule book that has governed international trade since World War II,” said Wendy Cutler, senior vice president of the Asia Society Policy Institute.

“Whether our partners can preserve it without the United States is an open question,” she added.

China, notably absent from the latest tariff action, responded to U.S. trade protectionism with strong words.

“The Chinese side’s opposition to tariffs has been consistent and clear,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun.
“There is no winner in a tariff war or trade war.”

The expanded tariffs come amid growing legal scrutiny. Trump’s reliance on emergency economic powers has drawn lawsuits, and a U.S. Court of Appeals is currently hearing arguments on whether the president overstepped his authority.

While Trump boasts of rising customs revenues, economists warn the broader impact could be more harmful than helpful, potentially fueling inflation across sectors.

Still, some countries have negotiated lower tariffs to avoid steeper penalties.

Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea, and the EU were among those striking deals to avert harsher rates.

In the latest round of adjustments:

Switzerland now faces a 39% tariff.

Taiwan’s duty was reduced from 32% to 20%, though President Lai Ching-te pledged to lobby for further reductions.

Cambodia and Thailand saw their tariffs cut to 19% — down from initially proposed levels of 49% and 36%, respectively.

The UK, though not previously targeted by reciprocal tariffs, also reached a trade agreement with Washington.

China remains under a separate timeline, with new tariff decisions expected by August 12.

Though both countries had previously escalated tariffs to triple-digit levels, they have since agreed to temporary reductions while talks continue.

Five Dead, Five Injured in Separate Crashes On Lekki-Epe Expressway – LASTMA

Tragedy struck on Thursday in Lagos as two separate road accidents along the Lekki-Epe Expressway claimed five lives and left five others injured, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The first accident occurred during the early hours of the day at Abijo Bus Stop, beneath the pedestrian bridge and heading inward Epe.

LASTMA explained that a Mitsubishi pickup van with registration number AKD 733 JM, reportedly speeding, lost control and collided with a piece of Craneburg Construction Company equipment lawfully parked by the roadside.

The impact was devastating, resulting in the death of four of the vehicle’s occupants, three men and one woman, whose bodies were recovered at the scene.

LASTMA confirmed that its operatives were able to successfully rescue three other female passengers who were trapped in the wreckage.

The survivors were quickly stabilised before being handed over to officers of the Eleko Division of the Nigeria Police Force, who facilitated their transfer to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment and medical evaluation.

A second crash was reported later that night in the Frajend Group area, inward Bogije, also along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

In this instance, a Toyota Escort Jeep traveling at high speed crashed into a parked Dangote truck.

According to LASTMA, the SUV driver died on the spot, while two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were trapped inside the mangled vehicle.

The agency’s operatives undertook a delicate extrication process to free them.

The Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the injured victims were eventually rescued and placed under the care of officers from the Elemoro Police Division, who ensured their immediate transport to medical facilities for life-saving care.

Quoting the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, Taofiq relayed the agency’s deep sorrow over the twin tragedies, describing the incidents as both “colossal and avoidable.”

“We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this moment of unspeakable loss and anguish. It is our earnest prayer that the Almighty grants them the strength to bear these irreparable losses,” Bakare-Oki said.

He also issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to refrain from reckless driving, particularly speeding, which he identified as one of the leading causes of road fatalities.

“These deeply saddening occurrences serve as grim reminders of the catastrophic consequences that stem from the willful violation of established speed regulations,” he stated.

Bakare-Oki further noted that the Lagos State Government has made major investments in traffic control measures such as road signage, speed limiters, and high-visibility infrastructure, all designed to reduce the likelihood of such accidents.

“Motorists are hereby implored to abide by these measures, which are designed solely for the preservation of human life,” he added.

Peter Obi Would Defeat Any Candidate In the North If He Returns To PDP – Jerry Gana

Professor Jerry Gana, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, stands a strong chance of defeating any opponent in Nigeria’s northern states if he rejoins the PDP and runs for president.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Gana remarked, “I’m a researcher, and I research opinions. In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate, because our people are very fair‑minded.”

Obi, who contested the 2023 general election under the Labour Party, had earlier resigned from the PDP in May 2022.

Recalling the PDP’s origin and national impact, Gana emphasized the party’s grassroots appeal and foundational role in Nigeria’s return to democracy.

“I must confess that many people have forgotten that the PDP was created as a grassroots organisation. In 1998, we were formed and then, moving to the elections in 1999, we were in every polling unit, because we are the ones who really won the first election,” he said.

He continued, “Many people have forgotten that the PDP won most of the local governments. When it came to the presidential elections, we won the presidency, we won the Senate, and we won the House. We were totally in control, and that is why we were very delighted that we restored democracy to Nigeria and re‑established civil rule.

“Because for a number of years there was military rule, but we successfully terminated that in a very democratic way, so the PDP was really as it were, a grassroots party. That’s why when we said ‘power to the people’, we meant it because that was what it was, and it has been like that.”

Addressing concerns over internal rifts in the PDP, Gana dismissed them as exaggerated.

“So when this recent problem happened, it was really among a few elites here in Abuja. It didn’t even go beyond,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Gana also spoke about rotational leadership and party zoning arrangements.

“In 2031, it will be the turn of the North. Our people are very fair, and we are building a nation,” he added.

Gana served as Minister of Information and Cooperation from 1999 to 2003 under President Olusegun Obasanjo and played a key role during Nigeria’s transition to democratic governance.

Kwankwaso Will Win 2031 Presidential Election, Says Akwa Ibom Prophet

Prophet Francis Udo, a prominent cleric and founder of the Prayer Foundation Network, has made bold prophecies regarding Nigeria’s political future post-2023, including a surprising alliance between key northern and southern figures.

Speaking during an interview with South South Punch in Uyo on Wednesday, Udo revealed that God showed him a vision in which Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, would become Nigeria’s next president after President Bola Tinubu’s tenure ends in 2031.

According to Udo, “The current Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, as God showed me, will become the Vice Presidential running mate to Kwankwaso.”

He added, “Very soon, Kwankwaso will move to the ruling All Progressives Congress, where he will transmute and be made to run as Vice President to Tinubu, before transmuting to Presidential aspirant, candidate and ultimately, the next President.”

In the same vision, Udo claimed that further shifts will occur in Nigeria’s top leadership structure.

“In the vision that God showed up me, the current Chief Of Staff to President Tinubu, in the person of Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, will become the next Senate President, while the current Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, will be the next Secretary to the Government of the Federation.”

Turning to state-level politics, the Essien Udim-born cleric also shared revelations concerning Akwa Ibom State’s future leadership.

He said that current Governor Umo Eno would move on to the Senate after completing his second term.

“Governor Umo Eno will have clash of interest with the current Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, who is also from the same Senatorial District, as the two will be looking for Uyo Senate seat, but would be resolved as Uwah would be nominated as the next Deputy Governor to the current Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo who will become the governor of the state in 2031,” he stated.

According to the prophecy, “Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State Petroleum (Gas Resources), God has shown me, will be the next Governor of Akwa Ibom in 2031, when governorship will be zoned back to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District (Akwa Ibom North West). He will be deputised by the present SSG, Prince Enobong Uwah; mark my words, that is what God has shown me.”

Udo expressed gratitude to his prayer network for their spiritual dedication and also appreciated Dr. Victor Antai, Director of Projects at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for “effectively representing the state on the board and for using the position, not as political tool but to better the lot of the state and the people.”

Police Rescue Six Kidnapped Law Students

The Benue State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of six law students who were abducted while traveling to the Nigerian Law School in Yola, Adamawa State.

The students, who were on their way from Anambra State, were kidnapped on July 26, 2025, near the boundary between Benue and Taraba states.

The incident occurred just days before they were expected to resume academic activities at the Yola campus of the Nigerian Law School.

In an official statement released Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Udeme Edet, the command confirmed that all six students have now been freed and reunited with their families.

“Please be informed that the police have successfully rescued six law students of the Yola campus, who were abducted on July 26, 2025, while traveling from Anambra State to Adamawa State, have been safely released and united with their families this morning, August 1, 2025,” the statement read.

The abduction was initially brought to national attention by Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Afam Osigwe, during the NBA North-Central Regional Security Summit held in Makurdi on July 28.

Osigwe used the occasion to highlight the worsening security situation in the region, expressing concern for the safety of law students and other citizens.

Benue State has witnessed recurring security challenges over the past decade, with kidnappings and violent attacks becoming increasingly common, especially along its border regions.

Tinubu Appoints Majekodunmi As New Climate Change Council DG

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), marking a key leadership change in the nation’s climate governance framework.

Mrs. Majekodunmi takes over from Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, who served as the Council’s first Director-General following her appointment in June 2024.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

He described Majekodunmi as “a climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience,” adding that she has worked extensively with both global and domestic institutions on “renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance.”

Before this appointment, Majekodunmi held the role of Financial Adviser within the NCCC, where she played an instrumental role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policy and its engagements on the international stage.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing DG, Dr. Madueke, acknowledging “her dedicated service and strong foundation for the Council’s continued growth.”

The statement affirmed the administration’s broader environmental agenda.

“Majekodunmi’s appointment reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.”

Obi’s 2023 Rhetoric Won’t Work Again – Former Ekiti Deputy Governor Olujimi

Former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, has downplayed the chances of Labour Party’s Peter Obi posing a serious challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking as a guest on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Thursday, Olujimi argued that Obi’s performance in the 2023 election was largely due to his rhetorical appeal, which, according to her, may not resonate with voters the same way in 2027.

“The rhetoric of the last election will not work again, except he comes with another gimmick. And you see, this (Tinubu) is a politician, a man who knows the terrain well,” she said.

Olujimi stressed that President Tinubu’s deep political roots and strategic experience make him a formidable incumbent, suggesting that defeating him in the next general election would be no easy feat.

“This is a politician, a man who knows the terrain well,” she reiterated, further emphasizing Tinubu’s edge over his opponents, including Obi.
