2027 Presidency: My Official Declaration Coming Soon – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has sparked renewed interest in Nigeria’s political landscape after hinting at another bid for the presidency in 2027.

During a brief chat with journalists, Atiku suggested that a formal declaration would be made soon, reinforcing speculation about his future ambitions.

In a post that quickly gained traction on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku responded to direct questions about his plans with a calm assurance.

“We will let you know. We will give you formal announcement,” he said with a confident smile.

When asked what his course of action would be if he did not secure his party’s ticket, the 77-year-old veteran politician replied assertively, “Have I ever failed to get the ticket? I’m confident.”

Atiku, who has been a recurring figure in Nigeria’s presidential contests since 1993, also weighed in on the debate around youth participation in politics.

In a pointed comment, he said, “Let the youths contest now. It’s democracy.”

Backing Atiku’s prospective run, Dr. Emeka Kalu, President of the ECK Foundation, threw his support behind the former Vice President.

He described Atiku as “a detribalised Nigerian” with the needed experience to tackle Nigeria’s ongoing economic and security challenges.

In a statement, Kalu highlighted Atiku’s perseverance and leadership track record as key strengths.

According to him, these traits make Atiku “a strong candidate to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.”

Kalu also framed his support as a strategic decision for the Southeast, stating that endorsing Atiku “could be a strategic move for the Igbo people, potentially paving the way for Mr. Peter Obi in the future and giving the Igbo community a say in Nigeria’s power dynamics.”

He further praised Atiku’s past economic initiatives, saying his time as Vice President demonstrated his ability to drive reforms.

“Atiku’s leadership experience and vision [are] the essential assets for revitalising Nigeria’s economy,” Kalu stated, citing achievements in liberalisation, trade investment, and job creation.

Osun 2026: Oyetola Dismisses PDP’s Rigging Allegation As Baseless Smear Campaign

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has strongly denied allegations by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that he is plotting to rig the 2026 Osun State governorship election in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued yesterday and signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, Oyetola described the accusation as false, malicious, and politically motivated.

He said it was a desperate attempt by the ruling PDP to divert attention from its waning popularity in the state.

“I believe in democracy and the rule of law,” Oyetola declared, dismissing the rigging claims as part of a “desperate smear campaign by the ruling party, which will face defeat in the 2026 Osun State governorship election.”

Oyetola stressed that he does not have any control over key national institutions, including INEC, the Police, or the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“I have no control over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police, or the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF),” he said.

The former Osun governor then challenged the PDP to present verifiable evidence to support its claims.

“Without concrete proof, this allegation should be treated as the dying gasp of a political party on the verge of another resounding electoral defeat,” he added.

Meanwhile, INEC has reiterated its commitment to using the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in upcoming elections, emphasizing that the technology remains central to Nigeria’s electoral integrity.

Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, clarified the legal status of BVAS following recent court rulings.

“The Supreme Court in its judgment did not overrule the application of the usage of BVAS,” Agboke said.

“It only emphasised the fundamentals of the voters’ register to anything that INEC wants to do. The commission has the power to deploy technology to deepen the process. Therefore, we can come up in 2027 with any kind of technology because we have the basis for it, which is the law.”

Agboke also revealed that a large number of voters in Osun State have yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“360,794 PVCs are yet to be collected in the state,” he said, while urging the media to play an active role in sensitising citizens on the importance of not just registering, but also ensuring collection of their cards.

Institute Calls For Compulsory Vocational Training In Nigerian Schools

As Nigeria joins the world in commemorating World Youth Skills Day, the Institute of Advanced Vocational and Technology Education of Nigeria has renewed calls for the compulsory inclusion of skill acquisition in the country’s secondary school curriculum.

Speaking during an event to mark the occasion-rescheduled from July 15 in honor of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, the Registrar of the Institute, Dr. Ene Nwannaji, emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria’s education system to adapt to the demands of the digital era.

Dr. Nwannaji, who also runs the Starlight Education Centre in Madalla, Niger State, advocated for the Senate to pass legislation making vocational and AI-enabled skills training a mandatory component in schools.

“The world is going digital, and we will be doing ourselves and the nation and the generations on board disservice if we shield the youths from acquiring AI-enabled skills,” he warned.

The Registrar outlined the benefits of skill acquisition, noting that it not only empowers young people for employment and entrepreneurship but also enhances national economic growth and job creation.

He called for a dual-track education system where students gain both academic and practical competencies.

He also urged a collaborative approach between lawmakers and his Institute to embed skill acquisition into the national education framework, describing it as vital for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“By working together, we can create a more skilled and employable workforce, driving the country’s economic progress,” he said.

Dr. Wannaji appealed to the media to amplify this initiative and sustain public discourse around it.

“Let the press do what they know how to do and ensure that project skill acquisition is not just a lawful duty, but a patriotic duty,” he added.

Engr. Jibo Idris Talib, who chaired the Local Organising Committee (LOC), also lent his voice to the campaign, urging the government to encourage skills development as a way to harness the creative energy of Nigerian youths for economic transformation.

The event was attended by key stakeholders in education and technology, including Mrs. Titilayo Olayande, Director of Quality Assurance at the FCT Education Secretariat; Igweonu Kenechukwu, CEO of SMNK Limited; and Mrs. Nwankwo Nkechinyere Angela of the FCT Department of Science and Technology Information (DSTI).

Also in attendance were notable dignitaries such as the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Governor of Zamfara State, who both praised the Institute’s role in advancing youth skills training.

BREAKING: Dino Melaye Quits PDP Over Party’s ‘Lack Of Capacity’

Former Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the party of lacking the capacity to rescue Nigeria from what he termed its “prevailing political cankerworms.”

In a post on his official X handle, Melaye shared a signed resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Kogi State.

The letter, dated July 4, 2025, stated the decision was made “imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

He added that after thoughtful reflection, he could no longer: “In good conscience, participate in its activities or support its agenda.”

The letter continued :“In view of the above. Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect.”

Melaye also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP during his tenure as a member.

His resignation follows a rising trend of defections ahead of the 2027 general elections. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently made a similar move, resigning from the PDP in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the party chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State.

Atiku cited unresolved internal differences and a departure from the PDP’s founding values as reasons for his exit.

Tinubu Okays One-Year Tenure Extension For Customs CG, Bashir Adeniyi

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, ahead of the expiration of his tenure.

The announcement was made on Thursday through a statement issued by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who explained that the extension is intended to support the continuity of critical policy reforms and strategic initiatives under the Tinubu administration.

“The extension will enable Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of this administration,” Onanuga stated.

Among the reforms being pursued under Adeniyi’s leadership are the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the full implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the execution of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security,” the statement added.

President Tinubu also acknowledged Adeniyi’s unwavering leadership and his contributions since assuming office.

“The President recognises Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” Onanuga noted.

Adeniyi was first appointed by Tinubu in October 2023 and initially assumed the role in an acting capacity in June 2023, following the departure of his predecessor, Hameed Ali.

Nurses Vow To Continue Strike Until Demands Are Addressed

The ongoing industrial action by the National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Federal Health Institutions Sector will not be suspended unless critical demands are met, says the union’s National Chairman, Morakinyo-Olajide Rilwan.

Despite a meeting with the Minister of Labour on Tuesday marking the end of the 15-day ultimatum issued by the union on July 14, the strike went into full effect on Wednesday.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Rilwan said the union would reject any request from the government to return to work without concrete actions taken on their core issues.

“That is what the government will definitely ask for, that we should suspend the strike so they can look at our demands,” Rilwan said.

“We are not comfortable with that. We have to make sure that parts of the demand are attended to before we can suspend the strike at all.”

He explained that the union had exercised patience, giving the government ample time to act before embarking on a 7-day warning strike, but no progress was made.

On Wednesday, Minister of Labour Muhammadu Dingyadi appealed to the nurses to call off the strike, emphasizing that strikes are not the ideal way to settle industrial disagreements.

He encouraged the union to pursue continued dialogue, adding that further discussions would be held on Friday at the Ministry of Health.

Rilwan stressed that nurses are naturally compassionate and reluctant to take such drastic action, but had no choice after being ignored for so long.

“It’s not actually in the nurses’ attitude to embark on a strike, and we have been patient enough because we are compassionate. Nurses are empathetic with their patients, we love our patients and don’t want anything to happen to them.”

“But we waited for a long time for all these demands to be met. So, this strike happens to be the last option we have to get the government’s attention.”

“Based on the insincerity and insensitivity on the part of the government, I believe some parts of these demands must be met before we can suspend the strike. We have to see serious commitment from the government before taking that step,” he added.

Among the key issues raised are:

Gazetting of the nursing scheme of service

Upward review of allowances

Specialty allowances for professional nurses

Recruitment of additional nurses

Improvement in remuneration

Creation of a dedicated department for nursing at the Federal Ministry of Health

While confirming that the union had met with government officials multiple times, Rilwan described the discussions as mostly inconclusive.

“The Minister of Labour invited the leadership on Tuesday which was the last day of that ultimatum but the meeting ended in a deadlock because those that were supposed to be on ground at the meeting were not there, especially our mother ministry, the Minister of Health was not there, Head of Service of the Federation was not there, so the meeting ended in a deadlock.”

He also revealed that a follow-up meeting held with the Coordinating Minister of Health on Wednesday also failed to produce results.

“As at yesterday too, the Coordinating Minister of Health invited the leadership and the meeting was still inconclusive, probably it will continue either today or Friday.”

When asked why the talks keep stalling, Rilwan explained:

“That means there is no tentative agreement met. We have to reach an agreement before we can say the meeting is conclusive. There has to be an MoU signed by the stakeholders before we can say the meeting is conclusive.”

The strike continues as negotiations remain at a standstill, with no formal agreement yet reached.

Atiku Still A Strong Contender, But Peter Obi Could Defeat Tinubu – Bashir El-Rufai

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has shared his perspective on Nigeria’s shifting political dynamics, stating that Atiku Abubakar remains a powerful figure ahead of the 2027 presidential election, but warning that Peter Obi could prove to be an even stronger challenger to President Bola Tinubu.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bashir described the former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as “a force to be reckoned with,” suggesting that the veteran politician believes “the stars have finally aligned in his favour” for another presidential bid.

Despite critics pointing to his strongest opportunity being the 2019 election, Bashir maintained that Atiku’s relevance in the political landscape remains solid.

However, he was quick to note that Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 election, poses a significant challenge due to his rising popularity and dedicated supporters.

“Obi’s influence is one profound aspect of his leverage,” Bashir wrote, highlighting Obi’s “cult-like followership” and widespread appeal, particularly among Nigerian youth.

He added that Obi’s prospects would rise further if he selects a strategic running mate.

“If Obi were to run again with a strong Northern candidate,” Bashir speculated, “he could decisively defeat President Bola Tinubu even before ‘Aunty Remi finishes his breakfast around noon,’” a pointed dig at First Lady Remi Tinubu.

Bashir’s comments come amid growing realignment efforts ahead of 2027, as conversations continue around possible alliances between Atiku’s PDP, Obi’s Labour Party, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Several key opposition figures have been reported to be gravitating toward the ADC in a bid to form a united front.

Meanwhile, his father, Nasir El-Rufai, has faced political backlash of his own.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) recently imposed a 30-year ban on the former governor, barring him from any form of involvement with the party.

In a statement, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, spokesperson for the SDP, delivered the party’s position in clear terms:

“El-Rufai is hereby banished and banned from applying for membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, symbol, mark, or any activities, organs, agencies, and institutions of the SDP or donating to, supporting, contributing to, or participating in any affairs of the SDP for 30 years effective from today.”

Man kills Self Over N500,000 Gambling Debts

A young man identified as Stephen Chidubem has been confirmed dead after allegedly taking his own life over gambling debt.

The incident occurred at Abba Street, behind the Anglican Church in Saburi 2, Abuja.

This was made known by a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, in a post on his X handle on Thursday.

Makama disclosed that Chidubem hung himself using a rope tied to a ceiling fan.

According to the report, emergency responders arrived at the scene and evacuated the body to Kubwa General Hospital.

He was confirmed dead by a medical doctor and the corpse subsequently deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy.

Makama said a suicide note recovered at the scene pointed to gambling addiction as the cause of the tragic act.

In the note, Chidubem apologized to those he owed and to those he believed were affected by his financial troubles.

The note read in part: “Sorry to everyone who cared, I can’t continue putting people in trouble because of my gambling addiction. Please forgive me Elvis, Paul, and all I’m owing. And you, Bishop Andy Ero, give the balance of N507,500 to Elvis or Paul.”

It was gathered that the deceased had been struggling with a severe gambling addiction that plunged him into debt and emotional distress.

Gombe Politician Nafi’u Bala Declares Self ADC National Chairman, Rejects Opposition Alliance

Former African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Gombe State, Nafi’u Bala, has proclaimed himself the legitimate national chairman of the party, rejecting the leadership under David Mark.

At a press briefing held on Wednesday night in Abuja, Bala accused the current leadership of unlawfully seizing control of the ADC and aligning the party with outsiders through an opposition coalition arrangement.

He called the actions “political hooliganism” and argued they violated the party’s constitution.

“The plan to hand over our party’s future to powerful outsiders who were never part of us, while ignoring the duties of elected party leaders, is completely wrong and unacceptable,” Bala said.

He further declared that genuine ADC members intend to challenge the leadership takeover in court.

Bala also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognize him as the rightful chairman of the ADC.
