Benue Governor Sacks All Commissioners, Appoints New Chief Of Staff

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has dissolved the State Executive Council, ending the tenure of all commissioners in his administration.

The announcement was made Wednesday night during the 12th Executive Council meeting of 2025, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesman, Tersoo Kula.

As part of the shake-up, the governor appointed Barrister Moses Atagher, a former two-term Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, as his new Chief of Staff.

Atagher, who once served as the acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, is expected to assume duties immediately.

Governor Alia expressed gratitude to the outgoing commissioners for their service over the past two years, urging those not reappointed to remain active in the party and supportive of the administration.

“They are only paving way for other citizens who may be chosen to replace them to also contribute their quota,” he said.

He clarified that apart from the new Chief of Staff, the dissolution affects only commissioners, leaving other appointees in place for now.

Speaking on behalf of the dissolved commissioners, Barrister Bemsen Mnyim thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve and reflected on the experience gained during their tenure.

“At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you,” Mnyim said.

The outgoing commissioners have been directed to formally hand over to the Permanent Secretaries of their respective ministries as soon as possible.

2027: Obi Part Of Coalition From Day One, Not Yet An ADC Member – Spokesman

The spokesman of the opposition coalition, Bolajia Abdullahi, says Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi has been part of the group from its inception.

Abdullahi said this on Wednesday when he was featured on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Peter Obi has been part of the coalition from day one. Peter Obi has attended almost every meeting of the coalition,” the spokesman of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), the platform for the opposition coalition, said on the current affairs show.

“The reason Peter Obi has not come into the ADC as a card-carrying member was because he asked for leave to allow him to complete the election that his people were involved in the Labour Party – the same thing applied to Mallam Nasir El-Rufai – and they were allowed by the leadership to complete the election processese that they started in their respective parties before they come into the ADC,” he said.

PDP On Monday, a former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, hinted that Obi, who was the LP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, would return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and vie for its ticket for the next poll.

Sheriff said Obi, who had indicated[interest in running for the presidency in two years, may return to the PDP under whose platform he (Obi) ran as vice president in the 2019 election.

He hinged his argument on the fact that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a part of the coalition – would run for the presidential seat in 2027.

“Atiku has been the vice president of Nigeria. So for him, (it is) president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President,” the former governor said.

“Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP,” he added.

The coalition has several top politicians as members.

However, the ADC spokesman has dismissed claims that the platform was set up to power Atiku’s presidential ambition.

Abdullahi said, “What I know for a fact is that Peter Obi is in the coalition. I also know for a fact that this is not an Atiku coalition. Like I have said repeatedly, the ADC is not built on anybody’s ambition.”

“What is at stake is much bigger than every individual. I am 56, who says I don’t want to be president?”

On July 1, political bigwigs, including Atiku, a former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, a former Rivers governor, Rotimi Amaechi, a former Osun governor, Rauf Aregbesola, among others, adopted the ADC as the platform for the coalition.

They vowed to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the next election.

34 Motorists Convicted For Attempting To Bribe FRSC Officials

A mobile court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday convicted 34 motorists for offering bribes to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) while on duty.

The judgment, delivered by Magistrate Abigail Asuquo, followed the arraignment of the offenders by FRSC prosecuting officer, Mr. Presley Orhue.

In her ruling, Magistrate Asuquo stated, “Having listened to the plea of the offenders wherein they pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them before this court by the FRSC, they have an option of going to prison for a week or paying the fine of N10,000 each.”

She explained that the fine imposed was in line with the standard penalty for attempting to bribe FRSC marshals.

In addition to the bribery charges, other traffic violations were also penalized.

Motorists caught for overloading or driving without a valid driver’s licence were fined N10,000 each.

Offenders of seat belt regulations and those without speed limiting devices received fines of N2,000 and N3,000, respectively.

Speaking after the court session, the Cross River State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Innocent Etuk, condemned the persistent efforts by some motorists to compromise the integrity of patrol officers.

He declared, “The FRSC has zero tolerance for corruption.”

Etuk stressed that the agency remains firmly committed to prosecuting anyone who attempts to bribe officers in the state.

“Henceforth, drivers must desist from attempting to corrupt patrol operatives, overloading of vehicles, refusal to use seat belts, use of phones while driving, among other vices capable of causing destruction of lives and properties on public roads,” he said.

The Sector Commander also reiterated that road users must follow traffic laws to help the FRSC achieve its 2025 corporate goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by 10 percent through strategic enforcement and awareness.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the mobile court was established after the FRSC formally applied to the Chief Judge of Cross River State, requesting a special traffic court in line with Section 10(8) of the FRSC Establishment Act, 2007.

Following approval from the Chief Judge, the mobile court was set up to fast-track the prosecution of traffic-related offences in the state.

Court Sentences Guard, Cook To Death For Poisoning Ex-Commissioner

In a landmark ruling at Katsina State High Court, two former staff members of the late Rabe Nasir, his guard, Shamsu Lawal, and Tasi’u Rabi’u, his cook, were sentenced to death on Wednesday for poisoning the ex‑Commissioner for Science and Technology in 2021.

Justice Ibrahim Mashi, presiding at High Court 9, found Lawal and Rabi’u guilty, concluding the poisoning was deliberate after earlier theft attempts failed.

A joint autopsy, performed by both police and hospital authorities, confirmed the presence of poison in Nasir’s body during post‑mortem examinations.

Another former guard, Sani Sa’adu, received a prison term of five years for concealing critical information related to the murder, while Gift Bako, a female suspect, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking her to the crime.

Speaking for the convicts, their lawyer, Ahmad Murtala Kankia, pleaded for mercy, noting “the convicts have families and dependents.”

Rabe Nasir served as Commissioner for Science and Technology under Governor Aminu Masari’s administration and had earlier represented Mani and Bindawa in the House of Representatives in 2003.

Why I Visited Gov. Otti – Abia Ex-Deputy Governor, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu

Governor Otti

Sir Ude Oko Chukwu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Abia State and a key figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has explained the reasons behind his recent visit to Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

The former Deputy Governor, who also served as Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly and Deputy Governor under ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, met with Governor Otti at his Nvosi country residence on Tuesday evening.

Speaking exclusively to Vanguard, Sir Oko Chukwu emphasized that the visit was aimed at encouraging the Governor to continue with his commendable development efforts in the state.

He said, “I needed to convey my personal feelings about the achievements of the Governor who, I must say, has done well by all standards.”

The former Speaker stressed that the visit was not politically motivated, highlighting that being in the opposition does not prevent one from recognizing positive developments.

He declared, “You see, let me tell you, I’ve gone around Abia State, especially those of us who come from Abia North. You just discovered that the kind of road infrastructure that we have there is unprecedented.”

“It’s not all about politics. No propaganda about it. The truth must be told. There is a remarkable improvement now across Abia State.”

“The Governor has been very intentional in virtually everything that he’s doing. Is it in terms of road infrastructure, health, or sports? He is very, very intentional, and the results are showing.”

“In fact, going by what he has done so far, and without mincing words, Gov. Otti has earned himself another tenure.”

He went on to commend the noticeable changes in towns like Aba and Umuahia, adding, “Just try and move around Aba, move around Umuahia, and other towns, the level of cleanliness is such that we have not witnessed before. I’m not the only one observing these. People on the street can confirm it.”

“So, I went to commend him and to appreciate him and let him know that all hands are on deck to support him. And looking at all that he has been able to do within just two years, you can just be reassured that the man has earned himself another tenure,” Sir Oko Chukwu declared.

When asked if his visit implied that the administration he served was a failure, he clarified, “I wasn’t there to compare administrations. The essence of my visit was simply to encourage the Governor whom I have observed is doing well.”

On speculation about a possible defection from the PDP to the Labour Party, the former Deputy Governor dismissed such notions, saying, “It was not the import of the visit, stressing that if at any time he felt like leaving the PDP, he would equally make such move public.”

Sir Oko Chukwu was accompanied by some of his close aides, including his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Obasi.

NASS Open Week Championing Legislative Transparency, National Development – Prof. Nnamchi

Hon. Professor Paul Sunday Nnamchi, who represents the Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has commended the recently concluded House of Representatives Open Week as a landmark initiative designed to promote legislative openness, transparency, and public engagement.

Speaking in Abuja, Professor Nnamchi described the programme as a vital opportunity for the legislature to showcase its achievements and subject its performance to public evaluation.

“It was a moment of introspection, assessing our performance in enacting impactful laws, sponsoring motions, and evaluating our constitutional oversight and intervention roles,” he stated.

The lawmaker highlighted the significance of beginning the Open Week with a focus on agriculture, calling it a strategic move rather than mere coincidence.

He emphasized agriculture’s foundational role in national development, describing it as essential to food sovereignty, sustainable economic growth, and mass employment.

Nnamchi praised the strong participation of youth and various stakeholders, noting that their involvement represented a key moment to reshape perceptions about agriculture.

“It’s time to awaken a new generation to the dignity, innovation, and national importance of agriculture, not just as a livelihood, but as a noble and transformative profession,” he said.

Professor Nnamchi also stressed the importance of leveraging legislative power to drive economic empowerment, advocating for laws that remove financial barriers, improve access to capital, and reframe agriculture as a central pillar of inclusive national prosperity.

Further, he called for greater political inclusion of women, not as a token gesture, but as a democratic necessity.

He also advocated for reserved positions for persons with disabilities, asserting their right to leadership roles in public life.

Additionally, Professor Nnamchi called for a clearer constitutional definition of the role of traditional rulers, positioning them not only as custodians of culture but also as stabilizing forces within the broader governance framework.

“Our traditional institutions can play an integral role in maintaining societal order and promoting community development. Their constitutional relevance must be clearly recognized,” he concluded.

Court Ruling Allowing Skirts For Female NYSC Members Sparks Mixed Reactions

A Federal High Court ruling delivered on June 13 by Justice Hauwa Yilwa has sparked nationwide debate after it affirmed that female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) may wear skirts instead of trousers for religious reasons.

The court held that the NYSC policy requiring female corps members to wear trousers was a violation of their constitutional rights, specifically the freedom of religion and human dignity.

Justice Yilwa ruled, “A declaration that the refusal to allow skirts for religious purposes is unconstitutional. An order mandating the NYSC to recognise and permit the use of skirts for female corps members with genuine religious objections.”

The decision came after two former corps members; Miss Blessing Ogunjobi and Miss Vivian Ayuba filed separate suits which were later consolidated due to similarities.

Both women argued that wearing trousers was contrary to their Christian faith, citing Deuteronomy 22:5, which they interpreted as forbidding women from dressing in men’s clothing.

Justice Yilwa ruled in their favour, stating, “The action of the respondents resulted in the applicants being embarrassed and humiliated.”

“This is an outright infringement of their fundamental rights.”

The court ordered the NYSC to recall the affected corps members and reissue their service certificates.

Each applicant was awarded ₦500,000 in damages for the violation of their rights.

Though they had sought ₦10 million each, the court deemed the awarded amount appropriate.

Juliet Ogunsaya, a former corps member who served in Enugu State, welcomed the judgment.

“I find the case and judgment really interesting, and I admire the courage of the plaintiffs to take on such an institution as the NYSC, and I’m glad they won. Especially because they allegedly have been harassed, embarrassed, and humiliated,” she said.

She added, “Personally, I believe that the NYSC has outlived its original objective, and as such, should no longer be mandatory but voluntary for those who want to.”

“However, I feel that because it is a paramilitary scheme, it is important to adhere to an appropriate uniform, lest it become a free-for-all.” Reflecting on camp activities, she joked,

“On a lighter note, I wonder how the ladies during my time would have managed the physical exercises, including climbing a rope line while wearing skirts.”

Not everyone shares Ogunsaya’s enthusiasm. StellaMaris Akubuike voiced her concerns, noting, “The judgment is not sitting well with me due to the fact that there is a law backing the formation of the NYSC as well as its dress code.”

“The NYSC is paramilitary, and the sacredness of its dress code should be adhered to rather than taking laws into one’s hands by going against the rules.”

She questioned the practicality of skirts for physical drills.

No Snake, No Shrine, UNIPORT Labels Social Media Report As ‘Hoax’

UNIPORT Gate

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has firmly refuted widespread claims circulating on social media that a large snake, allegedly revered as a deity, was discovered and killed within its campus.

The rumour, which surfaced online on Tuesday, included a viral voice note that triggered concern among students, parents, and members of the general public.

However, the institution promptly addressed the issue through an official statement on Wednesday, dismissing the story as completely false.

Dr. Sammy Kpenu, the university’s spokesperson, categorically denied that any such incident occurred.

He described the claim as baseless and the product of “mischief-makers” looking to stir public fear for personal gain.

“The attention of the University of Port Harcourt Management has been drawn to unfounded rumours and misleading social media posts alleging that a ‘big snake’ was killed in one of the classrooms on campus and being described as a deity,” the university said in its statement.

“There is also a voice note in circulation, spreading fear and insinuating doom, further fuelling this baseless claim.”

“The University wishes to categorically state that these claims are entirely false, baseless, and a figment of the imagination of mischief-makers.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, no snake was seen, no snake was killed, and no incident of such nature has occurred anywhere on the University campus.”

The university believes that the misinformation was intended to cause panic and damage its public image, noting that the creators of the rumour were likely seeking online attention through sensationalism.

“Management strongly advises members of the public, staff, students, and stakeholders to disregard this fake news in its entirety and desist from sharing such misleading information.”

To counter the misinformation, the university has begun monitoring sources spreading the rumour and is prepared to involve appropriate authorities when necessary.

“Appropriate measures have been taken to monitor and report those deliberately spreading these falsehoods to the relevant authorities,” the statement continued.

UNIPORT encouraged the public to rely solely on verified information disseminated through its official communication channels.

Tragedy struck in Ezinifite village, Okpuno, Awka, on the evening of Saturday, July 27, 2025, when unidentified gunmen abducted and killed Mr. Ifesinachi Onyekere, the Managing Director of Fish Magnet Outlet.

In a statement released Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that Onyekere was targeted at his home by attackers who had reportedly trailed him before launching their assault.

“Preliminary findings suggest the assailants followed the victim and shot him in the leg before abducting him,” Ikenga said.

Sadly, his lifeless body was later discovered, sparking grief and outrage in the local community.

Reacting to the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the killing as a “heinous and cowardly act.”

“The police owe it to the family, the people of Anambra, and the memory of the deceased to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law,” Ikenga quoted the CP as saying.

In a follow-up operation, a joint team of Police and the Anambra Vigilante Group recovered Onyekere’s navy blue Toyota Corolla along the Ukwulu–Igbariam road. Authorities believe the suspects used the vehicle to escape after the abduction.

Anambra Govt Explains Continued Detention Of High-Profile Native Doctors

The Anambra State Government has addressed growing public concerns over the continued detention of three prominent native doctors, clarifying that they are being held legally based on court orders.

Speaking during a media briefing at CANA House in Awka on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, dismissed allegations that the native doctors were being unlawfully detained by the state-backed security outfit, “Operation Udo-Ga-Achi.”

DAILY GAZETTE recall that the individuals in question; Onyebuchi Okocha (widely known as Onye Eze Jesus), Chidozie Nwangwu (Akwa Okuko) and Ekene Igboekweze (Eke Hit) were arrested in February as part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s clampdown on ritual-related practices and criminal support allegedly involving traditional spiritualists.

After their arrest, they were charged with various offences related to “money ritual,” “oke ite,” and “preparation of charms for criminals.”

They were later arraigned at the Anambra State High Court in Awka, where they entered their pleas.

The court adjourned the case, and it remains pending.

Amid speculation that they were being held incommunicado and without trial, Dr. Mefor stated firmly that their detention is lawful and sanctioned by the judiciary.

“Udo-Ga-Achi is made up of vigilante groups and police and those high-profile native doctors being detained like Onyebuchi Okocha (alias Onye Eze Jesus), Chidozie Nwangwu (a.k.a. Akwa Okuko), Ekene Igboekweze (alias Eke Hit), and others are not being detained without the approval of the police,” he said.

“However, if you feel your right is being trampled upon, you go to court to seek redress. Nobody is being held unduly. All these native doctors, none of them is being held by us, they are being held under the order of the court.”

He further explained that the police play a role in deciding the detention locations, which are legally sanctioned.

“Police is part of the ‘Udo-Ga-Achi’ security outfit, the suspects may be detained wherever the police approve the suspects arrested should be and that has been the practice. People who are saying they are being detained, where do you keep suspects, in the Vatican?”

“They should be detained somewhere until they are taken to court. Nobody is being held in Anambra unduly. They are there under the orders of the court and releasing them means disobeying order of court.”
