US Declares Venezuela’s President, Top Allies Wanted For Drug Trafficking, Offers $65m Bounty

The United States has dramatically escalated its pressure on Venezuela’s leadership, placing a combined $65 million reward on President Nicolás Maduro and two of his top-ranking officials over serious drug trafficking allegations.

In a statement released Tuesday, the U.S. Department of State announced a $25 million reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Maduro, who is accused of leading the “Cartel de los Soles”, a criminal organization the U.S now designates as a terrorist group.

Diosdado Cabello Rondón, the country’s powerful Interior Minister, also faces a $25 million bounty, while Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López has a $15 million reward on his head.

All three are accused of working together to facilitate the flow of cocaine into the United States.

“The Cartel de los Soles, operated by Maduro and his inner circle, has played a central role in transporting vast amounts of narcotics across our borders,” the U.S Treasury Department stated, underscoring the designation of the cartel as a terrorist entity.

According to U.S authorities, the charges against Maduro include narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, and conspiracy to use and carry machine guns in support of a drug trafficking operation.

A “wanted” poster circulated by the State Department labels him a “designated global terrorist.”

The announcement coincides with the anniversary of Maduro’s controversial re-election, a vote widely condemned by the U.S. and many Western allies as rigged.

Washington has refused to acknowledge Maduro’s presidency and has implemented numerous rounds of sanctions targeting Venezuelan political and economic figures.

Earlier this year, on the day of Maduro’s third-term inauguration, the US had reiterated its position by renewing a similar bounty offer and calling for accountability.

Now, with the inclusion of Padrino López in the latest notice, the scope of U.S enforcement efforts appears to be widening.

The United Kingdom has also joined in targeting the Maduro regime, announcing sanctions on 15 senior Venezuelan officials, including judges and high-ranking military personnel.

The U.S continues to urge the international community to support efforts to dismantle what it calls a “corrupt and dangerous” regime enabling narcotics trafficking at the highest levels of government.

2027: Internal Disputes, Weak Structure Threaten LP As 21 Lawmakers Dump Party

Within the past year, Nigeria’s Labour Party (LP) has witnessed a sharp decline in its ranks, losing at least 21 lawmakers across the Senate, House of Representatives and state assemblies.

This exodus comes amid escalating internal discord and structural weaknesses, raising doubts about the party’s trajectory ahead of the 2027 elections.

LP, once celebrated as a rising third force following the 2023 elections has endured a cascade of defections beginning in 2024.

Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi (Imo East) kicked off the first wave by joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July, soon followed by five House members from Imo, Kaduna, Cross River, Edo, and Plateau.

It didn’t stop there. Representative Dalyop Chollom (Plateau) resigned later the same year.

In Enugu, six State Assembly members including Ejike Eze, Johnson Ani and Princess Obiajulu Ugwu defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing “loss of faith in the party’s direction.”

By early 2025, more defections occurred. Representatives Dennis Agbo, Chidi Obetta, Sunday Umeha and state lawmaker Malachi‑Okey Onyechi all switched allegiances, along with FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe and Senator Neda Imasuen (Edo South).

Mid‑2025 saw two more resignations by federal legislators; Chimaobi Atu and Prof. Paul Nnamchi.

Observers attribute the defections to unresolved internal disputes, most notably over the legitimacy of National Chairman Julius Abure, whose authority has been contested by Senator Nenadi Usman and a lack of coherent ideology or structural foundation.

“It has nothing to do with the party itself,” said National Publicity Secretary Obiorah Ifoh, dismissing claims that LP’s collapse stems from internal failure.

“It has much to do with the survival strategy of most politicians. Most of them believe that the party at the centre will give them more opportunity for reelection.”

Ifoh also warned that defectors could face legal repercussions:

“The party has decided to open a ‘Hall of Shame’ register for these lawmakers or any elected official of the party who engages in fraudulent defection without first relinquishing the mandate obtained under the party’s ticket.”

He explained the challenge of legal redress: “You know the status of the judiciary in Nigeria. As to when judgement will come, we do not know. That is beyond our powers.”

And unless Nigeria’s political culture shifts, party loyalty may remain secondary to political survival:

“In Nigeria, where there are politicians without a clear ideology, their only ideology is survival.”

Political analyst Professor Kamilu Sani Fage linked the LP’s decline to its overreliance on the personality of Peter Obi.

“Labour Party is one of Nigeria’s oldest parties, but it was Peter Obi’s entry in 2022 that made it relevant at the national stage,” Fage explained.

“Without a strong structure or unifying ideology, the party is vulnerable to external influence and internal sabotage.”

He cautioned that cross-party migration may involve coercion as well as inducements:

“This wave of defection from opposition parties to the ruling party is not a natural political movement. Some are being enticed, others are being threatened.”

With the 2027 elections less than two years away and the ADC gaining traction as the opposition’s coalition platform, the LP faces a critical juncture.

Its future now hinges on rebuilding internal coherence, arresting defections (especially that of Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti of Abia), and reconnecting with disillusioned voters or risk fading into political irrelevance.

Teen Kills Stepmother, Another Stabs Father In Separate Adamawa Incidents

The Adamawa State Police Command has launched investigations into two separate domestic violence cases that led to the deaths of family members in Madagali and Gombi local government areas.

Police spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Wednesday, revealing that both cases involve allegations of culpable homicide within family settings.

The first incident took place in Pallam District, Madagali LGA, where a dispute reportedly broke out between two co-wives, 55-year-old Rhoda Anthony and 36-year-old Victoria Anthony, both married to one Anthony Pallam.

Nguroje stated, “During the altercation, Victoria’s son, Ijai Anthony, aged 16, allegedly struck his stepmother, Rhoda, on the head with a piece of wood. She collapsed on the spot.”

Police responded swiftly after receiving the report. The Divisional Police Officer of Madagali mobilised officers to the scene and transported the injured woman to Cottage Hospital, Madagali.

However, she was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

The police have since taken both the suspect and his mother into protective custody as investigations continue.

In a separate but similarly tragic incident in Fotta District, Gombi LGA, a man identified as Idi Buba allegedly stabbed his biological father, Buba Jelli, during a domestic dispute.

“The Command received a distress call that the suspect attacked his father with a knife, stabbing him in the neck and back,” the statement said. The victim was rushed to the Primary Health Care Center in Fotta but succumbed to his injuries.

Police arrested Idi Buba at the scene, and the weapon used in the attack has been recovered as evidence.

Reacting to the developments, Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, condemned the rise in family-related violence.

He urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and avoid resorting to violence.

“These acts are deeply troubling, especially when they occur within families,” CP Morris said. “We encourage the public to always seek non-violent ways of resolving disputes.”

He assured that both suspects would be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

UK To Recognise Palestine As An Independent State In September, Says Starmer

The United Kingdom has announced its intention to formally recognise Palestine as an independent state by September, unless Israel takes significant steps to meet specific conditions set by the British government.

Following an emergency cabinet meeting on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer made the declaration on Tuesday.

The statement came a day after his meeting with U.S President Donald Trump.

According to Starmer, the UK’s recognition of a Palestinian state will be presented at the United Nations General Assembly in September, should Israel fail to act on key humanitarian and diplomatic concerns.

He stated that the move hinges on “Israel taking substantive steps to end the ‘appalling situation in Gaza’” and agreeing to a ceasefire.

This policy shift places the UK in alignment with growing international support for Palestinian statehood.

Just days ago, French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France would also recognise a Palestinian state in September, potentially becoming the first G7 country to do so.

Last year, Ireland, Spain, and Norway had already taken the step of recognising Palestinian statehood, increasing global pressure on Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza.

In response, Israel’s foreign ministry issued a sharp rebuke of the UK’s position.

“The shift in the British government’s position at this time, following the French move and internal political pressures, constitutes a reward for Hamas and harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages,” the ministry said.

It further accused Starmer of being influenced by domestic political forces and international trends, saying he was “pandering to his MPs and the French.”

Woman Who Killed, Dismembered Pregnant Nurse In Anambra Arrested

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of the state.

The arrest, made on July 25, 2025, was facilitated by members of the Umueri village in the Ogbunike community after the victim’s mutilated remains were found dumped in a soakaway pit days earlier, sparking public outrage and fear.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga in a statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, one Chiemerie Elobisi, who is currently on the run.

She also admitted to being called in after the crime to clean up the blood and further revealed that the body parts were sold to native doctors involved in ritual practices.

The statement said, “The Anambra State Police Command leveraging on the assistance of the Umueri village, Ogbunike community members on 25th July 2025 arrested one female suspect, Somtochukwu Nwafor aged 24 years.

The arrest is in connection with the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse, whose mutilated body was recently discovered in a soakaway pit at Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect one Chiemerie Obika Elobisi from the same village, but currently at large. She stated that she was called by the suspect to clean the blood stains after the victim was murdered.”

“She further revealed how they sell the body parts to different evil native doctors in the area.

“Also, preliminary information shows that the victim, a trained nurse was lured by the murderer to his house under the guise of seeking medication.

“Given the information from the suspect, Operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in the early hours of 29th July 2025, burst a shrine of an identified native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile from Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike and recovered suspected human body parts, concealed in cellophane (nylon) bags.

“However, the Command has launched a manhunt for the prime suspect, along with the suspected receivers and collaborators.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the act as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life,” assuring the public that a full investigation is ongoing. A manhunt has been launched for Elobisi and other accomplices involved in the killing and trafficking of human parts.

The CP urged anyone with useful information to come forward, assuring that informants’ identities would be fully protected

Female Lawmakers Push For 182 Reserved Seats For Women In Legislature

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, has appealed to Nigerians to support a bill seeking to allocate 182 legislative seats exclusively for women across the country.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the Lagos lawmaker representing Kosofe Federal Constituency highlighted the persistent underrepresentation of women in elected positions, despite their significant population and contributions to national development.

“I urge all stakeholders, government officials, civil society organisations and citizens at large to rally behind this crucial bill,” she said.

“It is time to dismantle the barriers that have historically hindered women’s participation in politics and governance.”

Ogbara explained that the proposal goes beyond politics, it is a deliberate effort to deepen inclusive democracy and ensure that women’s voices are heard and reflected in governance.

“Together, let us champion this cause and pave the way for a more equitable Nigeria, one that values and amplifies women’s voices for inclusive growth and national development,” she added.

According to Ogbara, the bill seeks to create one additional reserved seat for women in each state and the Federal Capital Territory across both chambers of the National Assembly.

Additionally, it proposes three reserved seats for women in every state House of Assembly.

“This bill is not just about increasing numbers, it’s about ensuring that women’s perspectives, needs, and rights are reflected in policymaking. It aligns with international obligations like the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 5 on gender equality,” she stressed.

Supporting the initiative, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the FCT, reinforced the need for women’s inclusion in national leadership. She noted that when women commit to a cause, they deliver results.

“This bill is not just about more women in parliament, it is about unlocking the full potential of our country for faster, more sustainable development,” Kingibe said.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Representative, Ms Elsie Attafuah, also applauded the 10th National Assembly for championing the cause of gender inclusion. She described the bill as a milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“This is not just a proposal; it is a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic evolution,” Attafuah stated. She praised the contributions of Nigerian women in various sectors, including the national football team, the Super Falcons, who recently won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Attafuah noted that women currently occupy less than 5% of legislative positions in Nigeria.

“It is a call to dismantle systemic barriers and foster inclusive governance,” she emphasized.

Adding her voice, Nikky Onyeri, Secretary-General of the Association of Women Traditional Title Holders in Nigeria, described the bill as “timely and essential,” and urged the legislature and executive arms of government to ensure its passage.

“We plead with lawmakers and the executive to pass this bill. I’m optimistic, especially with President Bola Tinubu’s gender-friendly disposition. The House leadership is showing strong support, and the time is now,” Onyeri said.

Labour Party Youth Leader Kennedy Ahanotu Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition

Kennedy Ahanotu, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party (LP), has officially announced his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections.

With this declaration, Ahanotu becomes the first party member to openly join the presidential race under the LP banner.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with DAILY GAZETTE on Tuesday, the 41-year-old expressed that Nigeria needs a clean slate built on reform, patriotism, and capable leadership.

“I am contesting for the highest office in the land to offer Nigeria and Nigerians a fresh start rooted in institutional transformations and overhauling, so that together we can rise again,” Ahanotu stated.

“At the point where we are today, I think that things have been muddled up too badly that we need to press the industrial reset button so we can start afresh to build a sustainable democracy that works for all Nigerians.”

Arguing for a generational shift in leadership, Ahanotu pointed to historical examples of young leaders in Nigeria’s past, such as former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, who assumed power at just 29 years old.

“Every man is born for a purpose. I believe that I carry the burden of impactful leadership. Hence, there is no better time to start the pursuit of the vision than now,” he added.

Though he acknowledged that he may be older than some past youthful leaders, Ahanotu insisted that he is fully qualified for the presidency in every essential aspect—moral, academic, constitutional, emotional, and mental.

Addressing whether he would vacate his position as LP Youth Leader due to his presidential ambition, he clarified that it was not required by party rules, but he is open to stepping aside when the time is right.

“The constitution of my party does not stipulate that I give up my position to aspire for a political elective position.

“However, I don’t mind when the time comes or when we get to a certain point because I believe there is a higher calling for greater leadership impact if I become the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Ahanotu said.

On the possibility of withdrawing from the race if LP’s leadership, under Julius Abure, endorses another aspirant, Ahanotu said he remains a loyal party member and would adhere to internal processes.

“Until such reality dawns before I can be able to answer this because as a loyal party man, I am bound by the party constitution and internal mechanism of my political party.
‘For me, it’s always wisdom to obey convincing institutional (party) directives,” he said.

When questioned about campaign funding and whether he had any political godfather, Ahanotu declined to go into detail, though he acknowledged the cost involved in a presidential bid.

“Well, I don’t have to talk about that now because I do understand adequately what it takes to run for presidency, given the current monetisation reality of our electoral system.

“I believe when the time comes for nomination/expression of interest purchase, we’ll see if money can stop us,” he said.

Army Foils Boko Haram Plot To Plant IEDs On Borno Bridge, Recovers Weapons

Nigerian Army troops have successfully disrupted an attempt by Boko Haram insurgents to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on a bridge along the Dikwa–Marte road in Borno State.

The foiled attack resulted in the recovery of two large IEDs following a fierce gun battle between the troops and the terrorists.

In addition to the explosives, the army also seized several weapons, including AK-47 rifles and PKT machine guns.

The operation is part of the Nigerian military’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign under the Northeast Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, aimed at dismantling terrorist strongholds in the region.

Speaking with Channels Television, Major General Abdulsallam Abubakar, the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, confirmed that troops had been executing clearance operations across major terrorist enclaves, including the Lake Chad region, Sambisa Forest, and the Mandara Mountains.

“My men have been on the offensive for weeks now, there have been operations into the Sambisa Forest and the Mandara mountains,” he stated.

Recounting the specific incident along the Dikwa–Marte road, Maj. Gen. Abubakar explained “While on a clearance along Dikwa-Marte, our troops clashed with Boko Haram trying to lay mines on a bridge, the troops immediately engaged them in a firefight forcing them to abandon the IEDs and flee.”

He added that recent offensives had led to notable progress in restoring peace in areas previously under constant threat.

“There has been some stability along the fringes of the lake Chad, the terrorists are on the run and we are chasing after them,” Abubakar said.

“We will not allow them to attack our troops again, all liberated communities will not fall into the control of the terrorists, our troops are motivated and in high spirits.”

The intensified military campaign has also resulted in the elimination of nine terrorists in separate operations carried out across Bama, Gwoza, and Konduga Local Government Areas of Borno State.

According to Abubakar, the operations are being jointly executed by the Nigerian Army on the ground, the Nigerian Navy patrolling the shores of Lake Chad, and the Nigerian Air Force providing targeted aerial support.

He emphasized that the persistent offensives have played a significant role in bolstering security in the border communities around Lake Chad.

Labour Minister Urges Striking Nurses To Return To Dialogue As Negotiations Resume Friday

As the nationwide strike by nurses and midwives enters its second day, the Minister of Labour, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has appealed to the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to reconsider their action and return to the negotiation table.

Dingyadi made the appeal following a meeting held with representatives of the association on Tuesday, as part of ongoing efforts to address their grievances.

According to a statement released by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Patience Onuoha, discussions are scheduled to continue on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Health.

The Minister described the strike as an unproductive way to resolve industrial disputes, urging the union to embrace dialogue.

“Strike is not the best solution to industrial disputes,” Dingyadi said.

Despite the government’s appeal, the union proceeded with its planned seven-day warning strike, which began on Wednesday, following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14.

Union Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, criticized the government’s failure to respond meaningfully during the notice period.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. That is why we are saying the strike is going on, and nothing is stopping it. Even if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won’t stop the strike. They had enough time,” Rilwan stated.

NANNM’s demands include several critical reforms: an upward review of shift allowance, an adjustment of uniform allowance, a separate salary structure for nurses, an increase in core duty allowance, large-scale recruitment, and the establishment of a dedicated nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

Rilwan clarified that the strike was not a top-down decision but a collective call from the rank and file of the association.

“This strike is not initiated by the leadership of the union; it was initiated by the members, and they said this is what they want,” he said.

He added that union members were unfazed by potential government sanctions such as the ‘no work, no pay’ policy, due to the meager wages they already endure.

“They are not even contemplating ‘no work, no pay,’ because that is the only language the government can use, and they are ready because the money they are taking is not even enough for them. They are ready to sacrifice that as long as this strike continues.”

Rilwan also emphasized the long-standing neglect nurses have faced, citing decades of poor working conditions.

“For over 40 years, we have been patient with them. They subjected us to no provision of gloves or equipment, and for the past 40 years, nurses have not embarked on any strike,” he lamented.

While the current warning strike is expected to conclude on August 5, Rilwan warned that the union would escalate the action if no meaningful response is received.

“If the 21 days elapse and there is no reasonable response from the government, we would embark on a total and indefinite strike,” he declared.
