ISWAP Slaughters More Than 50 Farmers Near Baga, Survivors Say

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have reportedly massacred at least 50 farmers in Malam Karanti village, Kukawa LGA of Borno State.

According to sources, the killings occurred on Thursday about nine kilometres from Baga, inside territory normally controlled by ISWAP.

The farmers along with local fishermen had previously paid levies for protection to “Amir Akilu,” the ISWAP commander said to oversee Malam Karanti up to Dawashi.

“They have papers of the commander in charge of Malam Karanti up to Dawashi. His name is Amir Akilu. They enjoyed his protection for months before the latest incident,” one resident explained.

With the commander apparently away, rival Boko Haram fighters swept in, accusing the farmers of spying.

A survivor recalled how the gunmen encircled them: “They gathered us in one place and threatened to kill anyone who attempted to escape, but some of us chose to run rather than die miserably in their hands.”

“They killed over 50 people; majority of them were slaughtered. They also abducted some. Today they were in Dawashi doing the same killing but there was no information on the number of people affected,” he added.

As of Saturday night, neither security agencies nor government officials had commented on the attack, which comes barely five months after at least 40 farmers were murdered in nearby Dumba, also in the Baga area.

Gov. Yusuf Suspends Aide Over ‘Unguarded’ Remarks Against Kwankwaso

Governor Yusuf And Sen. Kwankwaso,

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has suspended Ibrahim Rabi’u, a Senior Special Reporter (SSR) assigned to the Ministry of Transportation, for making what officials called “unguarded” remarks about Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The suspension, announced Saturday by Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, takes immediate effect.

In addition, the aide is to receive a formal query over the comments described as inflammatory.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, said the administration “has distanced itself from the purported claim,” stressing that the remarks were “solely coming from the author for reasons best known to him.”

The release also reminded officials that “only the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Wayya, is authorized to speak on behalf of the government, while the Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, speaks for the governor.”

It cautioned all political appointees against making “unauthorized comments, especially outside their jurisdiction,” adding, “Any political appointee must get clearance before making public comments on issues that have to do with the position of the government on matters of public importance or of sensitive political decisions.”

2027: North-West Stakeholders Back Tinubu For Second Term

North-West leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their choice for the 2027 presidential race, issuing a vote of confidence after a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna on Saturday.

Present were all seven governors from the zone, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, former governors, the APC national chairman, state party chairmen, federal and state lawmakers, ministers, agency heads and other senior appointees.

Reading the communiqué, APC North-West Coordinating Governor Senator Uba Sani said the zone “reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and pledged full support for President Tinubu’s vision to deliver prosperity, equity, and lasting change for all Nigerians.”

“We thank and commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress, especially in the North West zone,” he declared.

“Under President Tinubu, security in the North West has significantly improved, enabling farmers to return to their fields and communities to regain peace and stability.”

The communiqué added that the region now enjoys “unprecedented federal representation with 12 ministers, key National Assembly positions, and top security appointments, a clear sign of inclusiveness and recognition.”

It also cited “major infrastructure projects… being completed or underway across the North West, marking a new era of development.”

The gathering concluded that “APC continues to grow in strength, unity, and national appeal, due to Nigerians’ appreciation of the President and our APC governors.”

Kidnapped APC Chairman Murdered, Two Others Released

Kidnappers have reportedly killed Mr Nelson Adepoyigi, chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 5 of Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State, after rejecting an initial ransom offer.

Adepoyigi was seized on Monday at the entrance to his farm along the Ifon-Owo road in Ifon.

His abductors soon demanded ₦100 million, but relatives could raise only ₦5 million.

When two family representatives took that sum to the kidnappers, they were detained as well.

The gang then raised its demand to ₦30 million for all three captives.

Local Government chairman, Mr Clement Ojo confirmed that Adepoyigi was shot dead on Friday, while the two emissaries were released.

Describing the incident as “sad and painful,” Ojo said, “While we are grateful that the two volunteers have now regained their freedom, it is deeply saddening and utterly painful that the life of Mr. Nelson Adepoyigi was brutally cut short by his captors.”

He praised the late party official as “a man dedicated to the progress of the party,” adding that Adepoyigi would be “forever remembered and honoured” at the grassroots.

Lamenting rising insecurity in Ose, Ojo noted, “We are now at a critical juncture where security challenges have become a serious threat to the safety and freedom of our people.”

“Only a few days before this incident, another resident narrowly escaped being kidnapped while parking his motorcycle.”

“This pattern of brazen abductions, even at the very gates of people’s homes, confirms that insecurity has taken a dangerous and intolerable dimension.”

Attempts to reach state police spokesperson Mr Olayinka Ayanlade were unsuccessful, as his phone line was unreachable at press time.

‘Abandon Me Next Time And You’re Out’, Gov Umo Eno Warns Akwa-Ibom Commissioners

Governor Umo Eno has placed members of Akwa Ibom State’s Executive Council on notice: any commissioner who ignores the governor’s movement or skips protocol will be sacked on the spot.

During an impromptu visit to the Judiciary Village construction site in Uyo on Friday, Eno voiced irritation at what he called a growing habit of “disregard for official procedures” among his aides.

“That’s like four commissioners and I’ve not found them. Starting today, I (would) like everyone to hear, when they hear that I fired the commissioner in your local government, it is insubordination,” he said.

Lamenting that key officials often disappear after escorting him to events, Eno reminded the cabinet that accompanying and returning the governor safely is part of their core duty:

“It is wrong for the governor to go on an appointment if nobody else follows him. My commissioners, special advisers are members of my first 11, and I do not announce where I will go.

“It is mandatory for my commissioners to ensure that they take me back to the office or the lodge because, if I stop by anywhere, there can be issues that will be raised.”

He continued “A situation where we go to a place, I leave the place, commissioners take off to what I don’t know, this is a full-time job. So, if any commissioner is busy doing their thing, they are not yet ready to be commissioners.

“I was a commissioner myself; I never left my governor behind. Today is the last day I make this statement, and I’m doing it publicly.”

“Anytime I leave an event, I stop by anywhere, let the commissioner pray that I don’t look for that commissioner. If I look for that commissioner, the commissioner is not there, the commissioner will lose his or her job right there and then.”

UNIZIK Gets New Acting Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has appointed Prof Carol Arinze-Umobi as acting vice-chancellor with effect from Monday, 19 May 2025.

The appointment was confirmed in a 16 May letter signed by Barr Olugbenga Kukoyi, the university’s pro-chancellor and council chair.

The council acted on a nomination forwarded by the University Senate and ratified “in line with Section 5(13) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions, Amendment) Act 2003,” Kukoyi wrote.

He added that, under Section 5(14) of the same Act, Prof Arinze-Umobi’s tenure “shall not exceed six months or shall lapse once a substantive vice-chancellor is appointed, whichever occurs first.”

“Kukoyi congratulated her and expressed “confidence in your ability to lead the university with distinction during this period.”

The Federal Ministry of Education, meanwhile, confirmed that it had been formally notified of the decision and had verified that due process was followed.

In a statement, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, said the ministry was “satisfied that the process complied with Section 5(13) of the Act through Senate nomination and Council approval.”

Folasade explained that Prof Arinze-Umobi will “oversee daily administration, coordinate academic and administrative activities, and ensure the university’s effective functioning.”

The statement continued “The Ministry acknowledges this appointment as a reflection of adherence to statutory governance procedures and expresses confidence in Professor Arinze-Umobi’s ability to provide stable and result-oriented leadership during this transitional period.”

The ministry reiterated its commitment to transparency, university autonomy, and merit-based leadership in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

JUST IN: Peter Obi To Quit Labour Party As Merger Talks Near Completion

Multiple party officials and close allies of Mr Peter Obi say the 2023 presidential flag-bearer of the Labour Party (LP) is preparing to announce his departure within days, DAILY GAZETTE can report.

Sources told our correspondent that Mr Obi has grown increasingly frustrated with what he calls “entrenched factionalism” in the party’s National Working Committee and the protracted legal battle between Barr Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman.

“The endless litigation has paralysed our organising machinery and betrayed the promise of a genuine third force,” a confidant quoted Obi as saying during a private strategy session in Lagos on Saturday.

According to two officials at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr Obi’s legal team this week requested certified guidelines for registering a new political association, an initial step toward full party registration.

Talks are said to be well advanced with the National Consultative Front (NCFront), several youth-led pressure groups, and a handful of disaffected lawmakers currently in the LP, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

Insiders say the working name for the platform is Progress Nigeria Movement, although that could change before registration.

Speaking to DAILY GAZETTE over the phone, Labour Party National Chairman, Barr. Julius Abure insisted the door remained open for reconciliation:

“We fought side by side in 2023, and we can still resolve any misgivings. We have asked Mr Obi to reconsider and help us reposition the party rather than walk away.”

Members of the Apapa faction, however, welcomed the prospect of Obi’s exit, claiming it would “restore ideological clarity.”

Mr Obi’s spokesperson, Dr Yunusa Tanko, neither confirmed nor denied the imminent defection:

“What I can tell you is that His Excellency remains committed to building a credible alternative that places Nigerians first. We will communicate definitive steps very soon.”

Analysts say a fresh party could upend early calculations for the next presidential cycle, particularly if the new bloc secures a merger with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s supporters or other regional kingmakers.

“Obi still commands the youth vote in the South-East and major urban centres,” noted political scientist Dr. Zainab Okoye.

“If he couples that with cross-regional endorsements, the ruling APC and the PDP will face a true three-horse race.”

Tinubu Arrives Rome For Inauguration Mass Of Pope Leo XIV

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Rome, Italy, on Saturday to participate in the inauguration mass marking the official start of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome and the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

The solemn installation mass is scheduled for Sunday, May 18.

Upon arrival at the Mario De Bernardo Military Airport at 6:00 pm local time, President Tinubu was received by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, along with representatives from the Vatican and the Nigerian Embassy.

President Tinubu is attending the mass following an invitation extended by Pope Leo XIV through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State.

The invitation emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating it was a “moment of particular importance for the Catholic Church and the world afflicted by many tensions and conflicts.”

The Pope added, “Your great nation is particularly dear to me as I worked in the Apostolic Nunciature in Lagos during the 1980s.”

Accompanying the President are notable members of the Nigerian Catholic hierarchy, including Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria; Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of Abuja; Archbishop Alfred Martins of Lagos; and Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese.

Imported Presidential System Won’t Work In Nigeria, Says Tony Cole

Tony Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State’s 2023 election, has argued that Nigeria’s U.S-style presidential model is unsuited to the country’s realities.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Cole contended that Nigeria’s current political architecture “was designed to be hijacked by a few people,” insisting that flaws in the system must be confronted head-on.

“This American system that is called the presidential system in Nigeria we need to go and address it,” he declared.

“We cannot import a parliamentary system from the UK and work here. We cannot import a presidential system; it will not work here as in every African country.”

“Are we satisfied with the system and democracy we adapted? No, because it is contrary to who we are.”

Cole maintained that the framework “can be easily exploited by a few” because Nigeria has “not built institutions you can hold accountable,” noting that those institutions are “modelled along the British system” which, he emphasized, “is not our system.”

Turning to foreign policy, he urged the country’s leaders to reposition Nigeria as a forceful, self-assured negotiator on the international stage. “You should do two clear things.

“First of all, position Nigeria as a serious negotiator on the table,” he said. “One thing we must understand is that, if Nigeria gets it right, not only the sub-region, the whole of Africa will begin to pay attention.”

“So Nigeria commands influence. But when you are commanding influence, you don’t go begging. So, you have a clear issue of what is good for us.”

Enugu Commissioner, Dr Ezeh Empowers Over 105 Community Members With N50 Million Poverty-Eradication Grant

At least 105 people, organisations, and all seven villages in Mburubu, Nkanu East LGA, have received fresh grants aimed at energising agriculture and local enterprise.

Individual recipients collected between ₦200,000 and ₦500,000; each village, Umudara, Uhuegbe, Uhuagu, Obinagu, Umunafor, Amanator, and Amachi—got ₦1 million, while Mburubu’s youths shared a dedicated ₦3 million package to spur innovation.

Handing over cheques on Saturday, Enugu State Commissioner for Innovation, Science & Technology Dr Lawrence Ezeh said the funding “was meant to empower the grassroots.”

A prince of the community, Ezeh framed the effort as support for Governor Peter Mbah’s push to “eradicate poverty from every household.”

“This is personal money, but I am driven by a shared mission with His Excellency, Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah, to ensure that poverty is eradicated from every household in our dear state,” he told the crowd.

“We must ask ourselves every day: how are we supporting the government to bring prosperity to our people?”

He urged beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely so that “more people can benefit in the next round” and challenged other wealthy indigenes to follow suit:

“This money is not for lavish spending. It is for farming, for trade, for enterprise. Let it be seed capital that yields harvests of prosperity.”

Ezeh also appealed for continued backing of Governor Mbah’s programmes, stressing that “the transformation of Enugu State requires unity of purpose.”

Community members hailed the initiative as “timely and transformative.”

Chief Emmanuel Edeh remarked, “He is not just talking about change, he is making it happen.” Mrs Cecilia Aniobi, who received ₦300,000 to expand her cassava farm, added, “This is the first time many of us are getting direct support without political strings.”

“With artisans, small-scale farmers, traders, and traditional leaders among the beneficiaries, the commissioner pledged future rounds of support, provided today’s grants are “seed capital that yields harvests of success.”
