Police Recover Body Of Slain Kogi Photojournalist In Bush

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of the body of Ayobami Aiyepeku, a photojournalist who was allegedly murdered by his neighbour, Oluwapelumi Adebayo.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Williams Aya, the decomposing remains of the journalist were found on Sunday evening in a bush near the WAEC office at the Crusher Zone 8 area of Lokoja, the state capital.

“The corpse has been deposited at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital,” Aya said, noting that the police have launched a discreet investigation to unravel the full circumstances surrounding Aiyepeku’s death.

Reports indicate that Ayobami was killed on the night of July 22 inside an office located close to the Government House and GRA area of Lokoja.

SP Aya appealed to the public, including the late journalist’s family and colleagues, to assist the investigation with any credible information.

“We commend the police for their efforts so far and the media for ensuring this case remains in the public eye,” said Timothy Aiyepeku, the elder brother of the deceased, while calling on both the federal and Kogi State governments to ensure justice is served.

Local residents were said to have raised an alarm after noticing a strong stench emanating from the bush, which ultimately led to the grim discovery.

Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, Abdullahi Adamu, visited the site along with security operatives and officially confirmed Ayobami’s identity at the scene.

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State, has named its newly constructed Convocation Arena in honour of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike.

Built in 2023 during Wike’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State, the arena was officially commissioned on Saturday by the state’s acting Governor, Ibok Ibas.

The event formed part of the university’s 35th Combined Convocation ceremony and its golden jubilee celebration.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Owunari Georgewill, traced the university’s convocation history back to its first in 1982.

“We are proud today, to celebrate the 35th convocation in our 50th year of existence in this fantastic edifice, built two years ago by Rivers Government during Wike’s administration,” he said.

Acting Governor Ibas praised Wike’s significant role in advancing the university’s infrastructure, calling the convocation arena a symbol of vision and dedication.

“The ultra-modern convocation arena, now proudly inaugurated, is a testament to what is possible when vision is aligned with commitment. Your Excellency, we honour your foresight,” he stated.

“This arena, both in design and purpose, is not only a venue for convocation, it is also a sanctuary where dreams are validated; where academic journeys culminate in triumphs; and where future leaders will be publicly honoured.”

He added that the facility is expected to host policy dialogues, innovation showcases, and ceremonial events that will shape generations of students.

“It will involve policy dialogues, innovation exhibitions and ceremonies that shaped the character and capacities of generations to come.”

Highlighting the symbolic nature of the structure, Ibas noted: “The infatuation of the edifice was symbolic, stressing that it represents continuity and a bridge between legacy of excellence and the promise of tomorrow.”

In his remarks, Wike who also received an Honorary Doctor of Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa) from the university expressed deep appreciation for the recognition.

“I must place on record that my wife and entire family hold this honour as pre-eminent and totally gratifying. Our gratitude knows no bounds,” he said.

The minister credited the university for shaping the foundation of his personal and professional growth.

“UNIPORT availed me the rich and concrete intellectual foundation upon which my socio-economic and political ascendancy have been fittingly predicated. I was educated both in character and learning.”

He added that his enduring support for the university stems from a sense of gratitude:

“It is in the light of the foregoing that I have always strongly believed that every alumnus should give back to the university as a mark of pure gratitude. This also explains why I freely give to this institution whenever I have had the opportunity to do so.”

How First Lady Nearly Missed My Dinner Over Super Falcons’ Dramatic Comeback – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has recounted a light-hearted moment at home as he revealed how the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, nearly skipped serving his dinner due to her deep interest in the Super Falcons’ thrilling match against Morocco on Saturday.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa on Monday while hosting the victorious Super Falcons team, President Tinubu described how the team’s stunning comeback from a 2-0 first-half deficit to a 3-2 win electrified the nation and united Nigerians in celebration.

“Your victory represents more than a sporting accomplishment. It is a triumph of courage, determination, discipline, and consistency,” the President told the team.

Tinubu admitted that he was initially reluctant to watch the high-stakes match, fearing the emotional toll.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want to have high blood pressure. But people came in and turned my TV on that channel. When it was 2-0, I got very offended and restless. But I was still watching with the spirit of resilience, determination, and courage. And after that penalty, my strength was lifted, and I believe that of the nation was lifted too.
But you almost made me angrier because your mother (the First Lady) was in the kitchen, nearly abandoning my dinner.”

“She doesn’t watch the game except when the girls are playing. And at the end of the final whistle, it was joy all over the country,” he said.

The President used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s dedication to sports development, promising more investment in women’s football and in nurturing youth talents across the country.

“Your story is a story of hope. And in this era of Renewed Hope, we celebrate you not just as champions of Africa, but as champions of the Nigerian dream,” Tinubu added.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also addressed the team, praising the Super Falcons for their passion and unwavering belief.

“You played with passion, confidence, and an unshakeable belief in yourselves—that it is not over until it is over.
The zeal you displayed on the pitch was nothing short of inspirational. You never wavered and reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football,” she said.

She prayed for continued success for the team and expressed optimism about their future on the global stage.

“I told Mr. President this morning that you are going on to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious. But Ajibade, the team captain, just seconded that, and that is possible,” the First Lady added.

Captain of the Super Falcons, Rasheedat Ajibade, also spoke during the event, dedicating the win to young girls across the country.

“Today, I stand before you not just as the captain of the Super Falcons, but as a proud daughter of Nigeria, carrying the dreams, resilience, and spirit of our great nation,” she said.

She extended appreciation on behalf of the team and urged for more support for women’s football in Nigeria.

“This victory is not just a trophy. It is a testament to the unyielding spirit of Nigeria. It is a celebration of every young girl in our villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream… This 10th title is for you, Mr. President, for Nigerians, for Super Falcons, and for every young child who believes and dreams to be on this stage someday,” Ajibade declared.

DSS, Military Eliminate 45 Terrorists In Joint Operation In Niger

At least 45 terrorists were killed in a coordinated offensive by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Army in Iburu village, located in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to security sources, the operation took place last Friday following credible intelligence from the DSS, which uncovered the movement and planned attack of the terrorists in the area.

The crackdown follows a series of warnings by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) about escalating terrorist threats in the border towns of Niger State, particularly around Babanna—a community bordering the Republic of Benin.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, in April, raised an alarm over the security situation in the area.

“His men were lucky to have survived an ambush by the terrorists who were angered by the seizure by the Customs officers of 500 jerrycans of petrol smugglers were delivering to them,” the report noted.

On Monday, security sources revealed that the DSS picked up intelligence indicating that the terrorists, riding on several motorcycles, were preparing to raid Iburu and surrounding communities. The DSS promptly alerted military units already stationed nearby.

A security insider confirmed to Daily Trust that a gun battle ensued between the joint security forces and the armed group, leading to the deaths of dozens of terrorists.

“The villagers confirmed that they counted at least 40 dead bodies believed to be those of the bandits. They also counted dozens of the bandits’ motorcycles destroyed during the gunfight,” the source disclosed.

However, the operation was not without casualties on the side of the security forces.

“Two members of the hybrid forces fighting alongside soldiers lost their lives, while four others were receiving treatment for serious gunshot injuries at a public hospital in the state capital,” the source added.

Vice‑Presidential Slot Must Remain With Our Bloc Or We Go – Ex‑ANPP Members Warn Tinubu

Former ANPP members have cautioned President Bola Tinubu that they may leave the APC unless the vice‑presidential slot remains with their group.

At an Abuja press conference on Monday, officials representing the ANPP‐former members, who call themselves the Association of Former ANPP Members, voiced concerns of marginalisation by the CPC and ACN factions within the APC.

Prof. Vitalis Ajumbe, the group’s National Coordinator, reading from a communiqué, asserted:

“The ticket you are serving will be disappointed if you choose another person outside the ANPP block in APC as your Vice President. The Vice Presidential seat remains sacrosanct for the ANPP bloc as the second largest contributor to the formation of APC.”

He added that under the previous administration, “The ANPP bloc in APC suffered serious political marginalisation under late General Muhammadu Buhari for the eight years of his reign.”

Ajumbe further added “Late Muhammadu Buhari’s abandonment of ANPP where his political career started and where he twice secured presidential tickets was quite inhumane. He treated us like a club of political pariahs.”

Speaking on current trends, he contrasted Buhari’s tenure with Tinubu’s, saying:
“When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected, we thought he would change the trend, but to our dismay, the situation is getting even worse under his ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.” He disclosed plans to consult with state and zonal members soon, warning:

“We may be tempted to seek greener political pastures elsewhere should the APC‑led government of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu reject us.”

Responding to the group’s threats, Deputy National Organising Secretary Nze Duru criticized their approach, cautioning that “democracy does not thrive on threats and intimidation.” He argued:

“I don’t think that party politics is a matter that is done on the basis of condition, which is you either give it to me or I walk away. It should also not be seen in the light of ‘my way or the highway.”

He reiterated that the vice‑presidential office was not automatically assigned and insisted:
“We must always remind ourselves that we are in a democracy. The office of the VP is not always on one ballot. It is the responsibility of the president to appoint or decide who he will like to be so vice president.”

MainPower Launches Mobile MAP Prepaid Metering Programme In Enugu

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has announced the commencement of a mass prepaid metering drive through its Mobile Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Metering Programme across Enugu State.

In a statement issued Monday in Enugu, the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, explained that the initiative is designed to accelerate the metering process for customers who are yet to be metered.

According to Ezeh, the programme will officially begin on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, starting with customers in the Abakpa and Ogui Districts.

He highlighted that the mobile MAP campaign will allow customers to obtain prepaid meters within 72 hours.

He said the initiative is aligned with the company’s broader goal of reducing the metering shortfall, promoting billing transparency, and giving consumers greater control over their power usage.

“The Mobile MAP Metering Programme aligns with the company’s commitment to bridging the existing metering gap, improving transparency in billing and empowering customers with more control over their electricity consumption,” he said.

Ezeh noted that the project would be rolled out in stages across the company’s district offices to ensure that all customers currently without meters have access to this rapid metering solution.

He urged residents in the selected districts to seize the opportunity for quick access to metering.

“Accurate metering empowers users to take full control of their energy consumption and eliminates billing disputes,” he added.

To participate, Ezeh said customers must present a copy of their electricity bill and a valid means of identification at designated locations.

He explained that the pricing for meters has been fixed, with a Single-Phase meter going for N137,062.50 and a Three-Phase meter priced at N227,900.00, inclusive of 7.5% VAT. The prices, however, are subject to monthly adjustments.

He added that meter payments during this programme would only be accepted via Debit (ATM) Cards, stressing that cash transactions will not be allowed.

He assured that the process is transparent and customers are not expected to pay any other charges apart from the cost of the meter.

“There are no extra or hidden charges involved in the process other than the payment for the meter,” he noted.

The company also issued a warning against any form of extortion and urged customers to report such incidents using its whistleblowing hotline.

“Customers are encouraged to report any form of extortion by using its established whistle blowing line (08146026678),” Ezeh said.

He encouraged unmetered customers in the pilot districts to utilize the programme for faster access to prepaid meters.

While this mobile metering initiative is underway, the company clarified that the regular MAP metering process remains available for those unable to participate in the mobile phase.

“Customers who are unable to participate in the mobile programme can still walk into any of the company’s district offices or visit the official website to apply for a meter through the standard application process.

“Our goal is to ensure more of our customers are metered and are able to manage their energy consumption,” Ezeh concluded.

Court Orders Nigerian Army To Vacate Disputed Enugu Community Land

The Enugu State High Court has issued a significant interlocutory injunction, compelling the Nigerian Army and the Minister of Defence to vacate a disputed land located within the Mbulu-Owo and Owo communities in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The order was handed down by Hon. Justice C. O. Ajah, Ph.D., on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in response to Suit No. E/375/2025, filed by H.R.H. Igwe (Dr.) Godwin Okeke Arum and Chief John Okeke Ogbu. Representing the interests of Mbulu-Owo and Owo communities, the plaintiffs named the Nigerian Army, the Hon. Minister for Defence, the Federal Ministry of Defence, and the Enugu State Government as defendants.

DAILY GAZETTE gathered that the plaintiffs’ counsel, I. O. Ngene, Esq, had submitted a Motion on Notice for an Interlocutory Injunction on April 7, 2025.

After reviewing arguments from both parties, including from Frankline A. Egbo, Esq., counsel to the 1st Defendant, the court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs.

Justice Ajah declared: “The Application Succeeds,” and granted all the reliefs sought.

The ruling specifically directs the Nigerian Army and the Defence Minister to “vacate and remove from the land in dispute truckloads of soldiers and or other military or security personnel they stationed on respect of all that Pieces or parcels of land or any part thereof situated and lying in Mbulu-Owo and Owo Communities in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.”

Additionally, the defendants are “hereby restrained from entering, interfering, occupying, laying siege or stopping or continuing with their entry, interference, siege or disturbance of the Plaintiffs/Applicants’ use and peaceable possession of their said ancestral home/land now in dispute, pending the determination of the substantive suit.”

The disputed area shares borders with several communities, including Akpuoga-Nike, Nkwubor-Nike, and Onuogba-Nike in Enugu East LGA, as well as Amechi-Idodo, Ozuku, Ubahu (Ogonaba), Umuhuali, Nkalagu, and Ama-Azu in Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi State.

The matter has been adjourned until September 29, 2025, for pretrial proceedings.

A Hearing Notice will be served to the 1st and 2nd Defendants or their legal representatives ahead of that date.

Enugu To Establish Two New Universities – Gov. Mbah Unveils Ambitious Education Drive

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has unveiled plans to establish two new universities as part of his administration’s broader strategy to transform the state into a center for knowledge, education, and global innovation.

Speaking Monday at the State House in Abuja during the launch of the Diaspora Bridge Platform, a digital initiative designed to connect Nigerian professionals abroad with local institutions, Mbah emphasized that the state is primed to lead in educational transformation and global academic partnerships.

“Enugu State is ready to host and lead diaspora collaborations,” Mbah said.

“In addition to expanding our seven public tertiary institutions, we are establishing two new universities soon, the Enugu State University of Education and Technology (ESUET) and the Enugu State University of Agriculture and Technology (ESUAT).”

The Diaspora Bridge Platform aims to mobilize the skills and expertise of Nigerians living abroad in support of Nigeria’s development goals in education, research, and the STEM-M fields — science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.

Governor Mbah also highlighted the administration’s continuing investment in education, noting that over 33% of the state’s budget has consistently gone to the sector.

This includes the construction of 260 Smart Green Schools, set to open in September.

In addition to the new universities, Mbah announced that eight Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges will be established across the state—one in each federal constituency.

“Because innovation is the language of the 21st Century,” he said, “we are also establishing eight TVET colleges… to reform our pre-tertiary education system and leverage technologies like AI, simulation, and virtual/augmented reality to enhance applied learning.”

The state’s new Center for Experiential Learning and Innovation (CELI), he added, is central to a broader educational transformation, with a focus on practical skills development for science, technology, industry, and healthcare.

“When you think STEM-with-Double-M (STEMM), think of Enugu State, come to Enugu State, give Enugu State a chance,” Mbah urged.

He commended the Federal Ministry of Education for launching the Diaspora Bridge initiative, calling it a timely move to harness the untapped potential of Nigeria’s diaspora communities.

“Education is the single most important sector upon which our nation’s socio-economic fate depends,” Mbah stated.

He also pointed out that for too long, diaspora engagement has been viewed mainly through the lens of remittances, rather than their broader professional and developmental impact.

“Our various diaspora communities across the world represent Nigeria’s most critical human resource,” he said.

“Today, we take the important first step towards that goal under the banner of the Diaspora Bridge, convened by the visionary Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.”

Atiku Remains Our Leader, Loved By All – Former Governor Dankwambo

Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Governor of Gombe State and current representative of Gombe North Senatorial District, has reiterated that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains a highly respected political leader in northern Nigeria, even after his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking during a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Expanded Stakeholders’ Meeting, Dankwambo stressed Atiku’s enduring relevance and influence in the region.

“It’s time to rebuild our party, today it’s not about contesting for elections. But we have leaders we recognise like in the north; Atiku Abubakar is our leader, we love and like him and by virtue of his position as a former vice president he is our leader whether he is in PDP or ADC,” he said.

Dankwambo urged party members in Gombe and beyond to concentrate on rebuilding the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, rather than focusing on personal political ambitions at this time.

“We are not talking about contests now. All we are after is to rebuild our party and position it for victory. All those wishing to contest should wait. Let’s build the party first,” he stated.

The senator emphasized the PDP’s commitment to internal democracy, asserting that it remains the only party in the country to have successfully conducted congresses at every level, from ward to zonal and is actively planning for its national convention.

“PDP remains the only party that has held its Congress from the ward level, to the local government to the state and zonal level and is currently working to hold the national convention,” he said.

Also speaking at the meeting, Ali Isa JC, who represents Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, revealed that the PDP has resolved its internal disputes and confirmed that its upcoming national convention will take place in Ibadan, Oyo State.

He further disclosed that the party’s legal team has been tasked with pursuing defectors who secured electoral victories under the PDP platform but later switched allegiance to other parties.

The PDP, he said, has engaged “senior lawyers to challenge defectors who won elections on the PDP platform but later decamped,” with the goal of reclaiming “those stolen mandates.”
