Nigeria Could Go Up In Flames If 2027 Election Is Rigged – Baba-Ahmed Warns

As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former political adviser to the Vice President and spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has issued a stern warning: if the elections lack transparency, the country may face grave consequences.

In a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, Baba-Ahmed expressed growing concern over public skepticism surrounding the upcoming elections.

He urged both political leaders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take these concerns seriously.

“Voices are being raised regarding integrity of the 2027 elections. Our leaders and INEC should listen. Anything short of the most transparent elections will produce neither winners nor losers. Rigging will risk plunging this country into its worst crises. No one wants that,” he wrote.

Baba-Ahmed’s comments arrive at a time when the National Assembly is debating a proposal to streamline the electoral process.

The House of Representatives is considering an amendment to the Electoral Act that would allow the presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and State Assembly elections to be conducted on the same day.

Meanwhile, the political space has also been abuzz following a recent meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The encounter has sparked speculation across party lines.

Responding to the stir, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, played down any controversy surrounding the meeting.

“Politicians talk; it’s not a sin talking across lines,” he said during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday.

He emphasized that political engagement between leaders, even across party lines, is a normal and strategic part of democracy.

“So, the presidency or friends of the president talking to Kwankwaso or the other way round should not be seen as anything strange or looked at with disdain or suspicion. After all, it’s politics and people align, re-align and shape their political positions.”

According to Abdulaziz, both Tinubu and Kwankwaso share a history that spans over three decades, dating back to their days as senators and state governors.

He said that long-standing relationship should contextualize their recent interaction and dispel any public anxiety.

Tinubu’s Wife Donates N1bn To Support Displaced Families In Benue

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has announced a ₦1 billion donation to assist families displaced by a deadly attack in Benue State.

The funding will come through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), her pet project aimed at improving family welfare across the country.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the New Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House during her condolence visit to victims of the Yelewata community attack, which occurred in June and left over 100 people dead.

The First Lady emphasized that the initiative’s goal is to help families regain control of their lives and return to their means of livelihood.

“On behalf of the governing council of the Renewed Hope Initiative, RHI will be making a donation of ₦1 billion to help displaced families get back on their feet, return to earning a living, and have a better life,” she stated.

“This is in line with the objectives of the Renewed Hope Initiative as captured in our motto: Towards a Better Life for Families.”

Expressing her sorrow over the wave of killings in Benue, Mrs. Tinubu called on citizens to support one another during difficult times.

“As a mother, I urge all of us to learn to accept this times as very challenging times. Our job is to play complementary and supportive role,” she said.

“It is heart wrenching to believe that people want to live in peace then destruction will come suddenly.”

She concluded with a message of solidarity and assurance.

“So, for me, hope is not lost. We’ve heard you and I believe my sister the first lady of Nasarawa state has heard you.”

CAC To Delist 100,000 Dormant Companies, Issues 90‑Day Ultimatum

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has issued a stern warning: approximately 100,000 companies face delisting from its register due to prolonged inactivity or non‑compliance under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

This initiative is part of the CAC’s broader effort to cleanse Nigeria’s corporate registry, ensuring that only active and compliant entities are retained, and to bolster transparency in company ownership and governance, especially in compliance with anti‑money laundering protocols.

A public notice from the Commission detailed that affected firms have either ceased operations, remained inactive for at least ten years, or neglected key regulatory obligations—particularly the annual filing of returns and the disclosure of Persons with Significant Control (PSC).

The CAC is granting a 90‑day window from the notice’s publication for companies to regularise their status.

To avoid removal, businesses must file all outstanding annual returns and, where relevant, send activation emails to activation@cac.gov.ng.

“It shall be unlawful for any company struck off the Register of Companies to continue carrying on business unless it is restored by an order of the Federal High Court,” the notice emphasised, referencing a similar delisting exercise in November of last year.

The Commission highlighted its authority under Section 692(4) of CAMA 2020, which empowers it to strike off companies that fail to update annual returns within the stipulated timeframe.

Companies removed from the register are considered dissolved effective from the notice’s publication.

“The General public may recall that the Commission issued a Notice of Intention to strike off the names of Companies which the Commission has reasonable cause to believe are not carrying out business or are otherwise dormant because of not filing Annual Returns for 10 years. Statutory Period of 90 days was given to such companies to file the requisite Annual Returns and send activation email to activation@cac.gov.ng,” the Commission stated.

“Companies stricken off the register are deemed to have been dissolved from the date of publication. It is illegal to enter into any transaction or deal with a company that has been dissolved,” the statement added.

Abakaliki Street Renaming Happened Under Obiano, Not Soludo – Anambra Commissioner

The Anambra State Government has refuted recent reports claiming that Governor Chukwuma Soludo renamed Abakaliki Street to Club Street, clarifying that the change was made during the tenure of former Governor Willie Obiano.

Social media platforms had been buzzing with allegations that the current administration altered the name of the popular street in Awka, prompting public debate and criticism.

But in a statement issued Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, labelled the allegations as “completely false”.

“Attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to the false and misleading claims made by one M.O. Idam Esq. against Governor Chukwuma Soludo, published by some online news platforms,” the statement began.

Mefor explained that the renaming in question took place before Soludo assumed office, firmly attributing it to the Obiano administration.

“Idam had alleged that Governor Soludo renamed Abakaliki Street to Club Street, which is completely false,” he said.

“The truth is that the renaming of Abakaliki Street to Club Street and the assigning of an adjacent street to Abakaliki Street occurred under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano.”

The commissioner criticised the misinformation, urging those responsible to verify facts before publishing.

“It is expected that a lawyer ought to have done research and fact-checking before going public with such wild, malicious, and false claims,” Mefor added.

He also called on Idam to retract his statement, framing it as the honourable thing to do.

“Considering that no one is perfect, and we exist in an imperfect world, we advise Idam Esq. to recant his statement as honourable people should when they go wrong.”

Mefor used the opportunity to reaffirm Governor Soludo’s commitment to governance without debt accumulation and highlighted growing support for the governor’s reelection bid.

“We reassure Ndị Anambra that Governor Soludo will continue to exercise the powers they bestowed on him through their popular mandate responsibly, which is yielding very heavy dividends of democracy without borrowing, leading to the clamour across the length and breadth of Anambra State for his reelection on November 8.”

In a pointed remark, Mefor questioned the credibility of Idam and urged him to focus on issues within his jurisdiction.

“We equally urge Idam Esq. to pay more attention to his state, if indeed he exists and is not a phantom, rather than spreading misinformation about Anambra State.”

APC Laying Groundwork To Rig 2027 Election – Atiku Alleges

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised alarm over what he believes are early signs that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is preparing to rig the 2027 general elections.

Atiku pointed specifically to the recent appointment of a former official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who once led the commission’s Information Technology (IT) department, as a red flag.

He said the development indicates a disturbing pattern.

The APC, just last week, named Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, as its new National Chairman.

Reacting to the appointment, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) voiced his concerns over what he described as a calculated move.

“This isn’t just any ordinary REC; this is someone who held a strategic position, such as heading the Information Technology (IT) Department of INEC,” Atiku said.

“This move clearly indicates that the ruling party is not interested in winning elections through due process or on the strength of their performance during their first mandate. Instead, they are laying the groundwork to rig the upcoming election.”

Atiku stressed the importance of cohesion among opposition forces, warning that infighting or disunity would only serve the interests of those determined to maintain power by questionable means.

48 Year-Old Teacher Found Dead In Classroom At King’s College Lagos

A somber mood enveloped King’s College, Lagos, following the discovery of a 48-year-old teacher, Mr. Ezekiel Akano, dead inside one of the school’s classrooms on Saturday evening.

The incident, described as mysterious, took place after school hours, with staff members finding his lifeless body around 7:40 pm.

Vice Principal of the college, Mr. Oguniyi Ayodele, reported the tragic discovery to the Lagos State Police Command.

According to security expert, Zagazola Makama, who shared the news on his X handle, the case was brought to public attention based on information from police sources.

Makama revealed that Vice Principal Ayodele was informed of Mr. Akano’s death at the school premises located at No. 3 Catholic Mission Street, Lagos Island.

Following the report, a team of detectives was dispatched immediately to investigate.

“The area was cordoned off for investigation, and photographs were taken,” Makama noted.

A preliminary examination of the body reportedly found no visible signs of violence.

The deceased, a native of Oyo State, was transported to the Lagos Island Hospital in Odan.

A medical doctor there confirmed him dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death.

Makama added that police have launched a full investigation into the matter and assured the public that they are committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the sudden death.

Attempts to contact the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, for further comments were unsuccessful.

He did not respond to phone calls or text messages sent to his mobile line.

Obi Remains Committed To Coalition, Won’t Risk Returning To PDP – Bolaji Abdullahi

Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has dismissed recent speculations about Peter Obi’s possible return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), affirming that the former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate remains firmly committed to the emerging opposition coalition.

Speaking on Prime Time, an Arise Television programme aired on Monday, Abdullahi emphasized that Obi is fully aware of the political implications of rejoining the PDP.

“Peter is in the coalition regardless of what anybody is saying,” Abdullahi stated.

He explained that the rise of the ADC has caused noticeable shifts within the PDP, but also warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) still exerts significant control over the party.

“Everyone knows that the jugular of PDP is still in the hands of the ruling party. Peter Obi, more than anyone else, knows that he cannot take the risk of going to the PDP,” he said.

On the matter of the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket, Abdullahi clarified that the party is currently not discussing who will emerge as its flagbearer. According to him, the focus remains on building party structures and upholding democratic values.

“Our party is one month old. We are not having any conversation about who will be the flagbearer at the moment. We are focused on developing the party, building structures, and establishing systems that demonstrate our commitment to democracy,” he said.

He assured that when the time comes, the ADC’s presidential candidate would be selected through a fair and open process.

“We are preoccupied with developing our party. We are building the structure and putting in place the necessary system that would show Nigerians that we are indeed a democratic party,” Abdullahi emphasized.

“The question of who becomes the flagbearer of the party is a question we are going to answer down the line, and we are going to do so in a very democratic and transparent way.”

Displaced Hippos Kill One, Threaten Adamawa Communities After Flooding

A tragic incident unfolded in Adamawa State as one person was confirmed dead following an invasion by hippopotamuses displaced by recent flooding.

The animals have wreaked havoc in communities, farmlands, and riverbanks in Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas.

Chairman of Guyuk LGA, Mr. Shalom Kassa, revealed the development on Monday in Banjiram, noting that a young man lost his life after being attacked by one of the hippos.

The animals, he said, were driven from their natural habitat near the Kiri Dam in Shelleng by rising floodwaters and have since migrated into residential and farming areas.

“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock,” Kassa said.

In response, Kassa, along with Shelleng LGA Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Abba, and local traditional leaders including the Kwandi Nunguraya of Guyuk, Kuruhaye, visited Yola to seek urgent government intervention.

He explained that the extensive flooding in both Guyuk and Shelleng LGAs had forced wildlife, particularly hippopotamuses, to flee toward populated areas, posing increased danger to communities.

However, the situation is complicated by wildlife protection laws that prohibit residents from taking defensive action against the animals.

“We are appealing to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” Kassa pleaded.

He also extended condolences to victims of the ongoing floods, particularly in Yola town, where five people recently died and 55 others were hospitalized due to flood-related incidents.

Receiving the delegation, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Awwal Tukur, assured them of swift action by the government to address the crisis and protect the affected communities.

Reports of Raising JSS1 Entry Age To 12 Misleading, False – Education Ministry

The Federal Ministry of Education has denied reports suggesting that the minimum age for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) has been changed to 12 years.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Director of Press at the Ministry, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, dismissed the claim as false and misleading, clarifying that no such directive has been issued.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the minimum age for admission into JSS1 remains 10 years,” she stated.

Boriowo emphasized that the alleged change did not originate from any authorized source and should not be considered as government policy. She added that:

“Accordingly, no child should complete primary education below the age of 10.”

She called on parents, schools, and the general public to ignore the misinformation and rely only on official channels for education policy updates.

The Ministry’s statement also included remarks from the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who reiterated the existing admission age requirement for tertiary institutions.

“The prescribed minimum age for admission into Nigerian universities is 16 years,” he affirmed.

Dr. Alausa stressed that the regulation remains firm and applies universally, regardless of when a student finishes secondary school.

“The Ministry maintains that this age benchmark ensures the cognitive and emotional readiness of students for higher academic engagement,” the statement added.

The Ministry further urged media houses, schools and education stakeholders to verify information through proper authorities before acting on or disseminating unconfirmed news.

UniAbuja Grants Amnesty To Students Involved In Exam Misconduct

The Senate of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly recognized as the University of Abuja, has endorsed a comprehensive academic amnesty for students previously sanctioned for examination misconduct over five academic years.

This measure, which applies to violations occurring from the 2020/2021 session through to the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, received approval during the institution’s 189th Regular Senate Meeting on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The resolution followed recommendations submitted by the Central Examination Misconduct Committee and was executed under the authority granted by Section 19(1) of the University of Abuja Act.

In an official statement signed by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, the university emphasized that the decision was taken “in good faith and was not politically motivated or targeted at any specific group.”

Dr. Yakoob also noted that:

“The students who benefitted from this amnesty cut across all faculties and levels. The decision was a result of careful consideration and aimed at ensuring fairness in academic justice.”

He further clarified that although the institution is extending a gesture of reconciliation, it remains firm in its commitment to disciplinary standards.

He said cases of academic dishonesty will continue to be treated with due seriousness moving forward.

“The Senate, as the highest academic decision-making body, retains the prerogative to intervene in pending cases when necessary,” he added.

Dr. Yakoob reiterated the university’s dedication to integrity and transparency, assuring the public that all actions are in line with guidelines set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other regulatory agencies.
