Fayose Endorses Oyebanji For Second Term

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, received a significant boost on Monday as former Governor Ayodele Fayose publicly endorsed his potential bid for a second term.

Fayose, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the surprising declaration during an All Progressives Congress (APC) gathering held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti.

Despite representing the opposition party, Fayose praised Oyebanji’s leadership and said his achievements justify support beyond party lines.

“I want to publicly endorse Governor Abayomi Oyebanji and his deputy for a second term,” Fayose said.

He further explained that partisan politics should not take precedence over effective governance, emphasizing the need to recognize performance irrespective of affiliations.

“Political differences should not override the need for good governance,” he added.

The endorsement was made in the presence of top APC figures, including former governors of Ekiti, current members of the National Assembly, and party leaders.

Fayose called on residents of the state to back Oyebanji’s administration in the next election, though he made it clear that this move doesn’t equate to a defection.

“I remain in my party, but when we see good governance, we must say it,” Fayose clarified.

Governor Oyebanji has not yet officially announced his intention to seek re-election.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially moved the date for the 2025 local government elections to Saturday, August 30, following a disruption caused by the recent state of emergency.

The elections, which were originally scheduled for August 9, had to be postponed. According to the commission, the “state of emergency” declared in the state affected earlier preparations, prompting a necessary change in the electoral calendar.

Shettima Arrives In Addis Ababa For UN Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday to represent Nigeria at the Second United Nations Food Systems Summit, delivering a strong message of agricultural diplomacy through the donation of 2,000 cashew seedlings and 100,000 cashew seeds to the Ethiopian government.

His aircraft touched down at Bole International Airport at 4:26 pm local time, where he was welcomed by Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh, alongside senior Nigerian officials including Ambassador Nasir Aminu, Chargé d’Affaires at the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia.

Also on hand to receive the Vice President were Dr. Suleiman Dauda, Finance Attaché; Wing Commander Gabriel Batubo, Deputy Defence Attaché (Air Force); Ambassador Macy Ogbede, Deputy Head of Mission; and Mr. Jangado Ishaku, First Secretary.

Following his arrival, Vice President Shettima convened a strategy session with the Nigerian delegation, including Marion Moon, Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture and Executive Secretary of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU).

According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima was briefed on Nigeria’s key deliverables and engagements at the high-level summit.

The Vice President will participate in key sessions on transforming the coffee value chain, as well as roundtables and strategic dialogues focused on strengthening Nigeria’s food systems and advancing agricultural resilience.

The summit, taking place from July 27 to 29, is a global review of progress since the 2021 inaugural Food Systems Summit and is expected to inspire renewed global commitments to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems.

During a pre-summit briefing in Abuja, Shettima outlined Nigeria’s threefold strategic goal:

“Positioning Nigeria as a leader in African food systems reform, aligning global partnerships with local agricultural priorities, and championing a private sector-led transformation model for food security across the continent.”

In a major gesture of bilateral agricultural cooperation, Nigeria donated 2,000 cashew seedlings and 100,000 cashew seeds to Ethiopia resources capable of covering approximately 600 hectares of farmland.

The donation was formally received by Ethiopia’s Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr. Efa Muleta Boru, and reflects a growing exchange between the two nations.

This follows Ethiopia’s earlier donation of 2,000 Haas avocado seedlings and 2,000 coffee seedlings to Nigeria in June 2025.

The mutual seedling exchange signals what Nigerian officials call a rising era of “Green Revolution Diplomacy”, where agriculture becomes a key tool for enhancing diplomatic relations and addressing shared food security issues.

The exchange “aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural transformation plan,” a senior official noted.

Vice President Shettima is also slated to take part in ministerial roundtables covering public finance, trade, and responsible investment. He will attend field visits and networking events showcasing innovative food systems solutions.

The summit provides a platform for countries like Nigeria to highlight scalable agricultural models, attract investment, and collaborate on solutions to persistent food challenges across the continent.

APC Factions Protest At Lagos Assembly Over Lopsided Appointments

Tensions within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reached a boiling point on Monday as party members, under the banner of Concerned and Loyal APC Members, staged a protest outside the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Their demands centered on fair distribution of political appointments at the local government level and the immediate resignation of the state party chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi.

Protesters accused the party’s leadership of promoting nepotism, specifically alleging that key appointments have been monopolised by the Justice Forum (JF) faction.

This imbalance, they claimed, has led to growing frustration among grassroots supporters and threatens the unity of the party ahead of future elections.

At the heart of the protest was growing dissatisfaction with Pastor Ojelabi’s leadership, which the group says has been marked by poor management and electoral failures since he assumed office in 2021.

“The people’s votes, which put leaders in power, are not being respected; appointments are monopolised by a single faction,” said Sulaiman Agbaje, a protester from Alimosho.

The group further alleged that under Ojelabi’s tenure, the APC conducted what they called the “worst primary election” in the party’s history across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs in the state.

They contrasted his leadership unfavorably with past party chairmen like Abiodun Ogunleye, Otunba Henry Ajomale, and Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, who were praised for inclusivity and stronger electoral performance.

In a striking claim, they stated: “For the first time since the advent of the Fourth Republic, the Ojelabi-led party lost Lagos State to the opposition in 2023!”

They also lamented the party’s weak showing in the recent local government elections, blaming the outcome on poor candidate selection and internal marginalisation.

Speaking on future implications, Bayode Taofeeq, a party member from Ikotun-Isheri, warned:

“We demand a 50/50 split or an equitable ratio of appointments between the Mandate and Justice Forum groups. This would ensure fairness and reflect the contributions of all party members.”

He emphasized that failure to address this internal crisis could severely damage the party’s prospects ahead of the critical 2027 general elections.

In their petition, read aloud by protest spokesperson Segun Faleye, the group accused Ojelabi and key allies, including Hon. James Faleke, of plotting to entrench a “winner-takes-all” system by manipulating local government executive selections.

“The members of the party are not happy. We are tired of his selfish leadership and the plot of his team to derail from the progressive ideals championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the group declared.

Despite their anger, the protesters reaffirmed their loyalty to the party and expressed support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda.

However, they were resolute in their call for urgent leadership change.

“Our prayer to the illustrious leaders of our party is to ask Pastor Ojelabi to leave the party NOW to avoid another imminent disaster in our party administration.”

They further called for leaders to allow constitutional officers to carry out their duties without interference from individuals with what they described as “selfish interests.”

The group concluded its address with a firm warning:

“Enough is Enough! Ojelabi and co. should take an honourable exit and allow our party to breathe in Lagos State.”

JUST IN: SDP Expels El‑Rufai For 30 Years, Rejects His ADC Coalition Moves

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially expelled former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El‑Rufai, distancing itself from any involvement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition he was allegedly championing.

According to Ambassador Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, the decision was made by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) following prior denunciation from both El‑Rufai’s ward, Unguwar Sarki, Kaduna North LGA and the Kaduna State Executive Committee.

El‑Rufai is accused of bypassing usual registration procedures “rather than register lawfully with the Ward Executives, El‑Rufai simply forged his own documents, self‑registered, and arrogated to himself ‘number 001 in the SDP membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward’”, a move directly at odds with official party records.

Additionally, the SDP rejected El‑Rufai’s negotiations with the ADC, stating these were in “breach of the SDP constitution.”

Aiyenigba emphasized the action taken:

“The SDP at all levels disassociates, disclaims, disfellowships, excommunicates Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai as a member of the SDP; and to the extent that he purportedly claims membership by self‑registration or any other means, Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai is consequently expelled from the membership of the Social Democratic Party anywhere in Nigeria and globally.”

The statement continued: “The foregoing actions by the NWC … are consequent upon the unacceptable acts of gross indiscipline of Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai, particularly in respect of the undeniable fact of having publicly declared for the ADC his selfish agenda to destabilise the party by way of sponsoring a group of dissidents to call an illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Party on Friday, July 25, 2025. Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai is hereby banished and banned from any activities of the SDP for a period of 30 (thirty) years effective from today.”

“Members of the SDP across Nigeria and the general public are informed that Mallam Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai is not a member of the SDP and does not represent the interests of the party effective until Wednesday, July 28, 2055.”

PDP Rep Member Dumps Party For APC

The lawmaker representing Ife Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Abimbola Ajilesoro, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing persistent internal conflicts and instability within his former party.

Ajilesoro formally announced his defection on the floor of the House on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Ajilesoro explained the rationale behind his decision, pointing to the PDP’s lack of direction and shifting internal alliances, particularly in Osun State.

“Consistency is the true foundation of trust. Either keep your promises or do not make them. The PDP leadership in Osun had made overtures toward aligning with the progressives, but internal narratives shifted along the way,” he stated.

Ajilesoro revealed that the PDP leadership in Osun initially considered an alliance with the APC but later abandoned the idea without explanation, leading to confusion and loss of confidence among members.

“As someone who believes in political loyalty and ideological alignment, I find it untenable to remain in a party that covertly supports the opposition while presenting a contradictory public stance,” he added.

Expressing his commitment to his new political platform, the lawmaker pledged allegiance to President Bola Tinubu and promised to work towards the success of the APC in future elections.

“Loyalty to one’s party and its leadership is non-negotiable in my political ideology. I have, therefore, chosen to align fully with the progressive camp and support the re-election of President Tinubu and all the APC candidates across the board.”

Ajilesoro officially resigned from the PDP in a letter dated July 22, 2025, which he addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ilare Ward II in Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State.

Even A Saint Will Loot Nigeria Under Current System – Anya

Elder statesman and member of The Patriots, Professor Anya O. Anya, has delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political system, warning that even a saint would become corrupt under the country’s current structure.

In an interview monitored by DAILY GAZETTE, the 88-year-old scholar and national figure called for urgent constitutional reform and a return to values.

Anya emphasized the need for a completely new constitution, dismissing current efforts at piecemeal amendments as ineffective.

“We cannot have a constitution that is patch-patch work. Ultimately, each time you patch it up, a new leak or problem would arise,” he said.

He stressed that only a people-driven constitution can address the country’s foundational issues, noting the 1999 Constitution was a military decree lacking legitimacy.

Anya lamented the moral and value collapse in Nigeria’s political culture.

“The value system has collapsed. Drugs and other problems are all there because the fundamental thing that holds Nigeria together has collapsed,” he said.

He added that Nigeria now lacks red lines or consequences for wrongdoing:

“There must be things that if you cross that line you are on your own and will pay the price. Right now, there is no such rule in Nigeria.”

He partly blamed military regimes for eroding democratic principles and fostering selfish governance:

“The succession of military governments in our history has not helped us. It’s what prepared the ground for this other development of taking care of myself first rather than thinking of the country.”

Reacting to Obasanjo’s claim that Nigeria’s problem is not the constitution but bad leadership, Anya offered a nuanced take:

“Even if you take a saint and there is no value system that guides him, the saint will become just an ordinary looter.”

Anya, who played a leading role in the 2014 Confab, maintained that the summit was necessary:

“It became clear that if you went to elect people as had happened once, it doesn’t work… they now become the boss.”

Anya said it’s too early to judge President Bola Tinubu, given the “noise” and uncertainty surrounding governance today.

“Even if I told you what God himself has said… the atmosphere we have is not conducive to discuss what God wants us to take.”

On the registration of over 140 political groups with INEC, Anya was skeptical:

“Does it make sense? People are being attracted to the opportunity it gives them to look after themselves.”

He questioned whether the 2027 elections will even take place:

“The way it is going, are you sure there will be 2027 election? You are creating a new environment, a new set of problems… That is an invitation to chaos.”

Anya warned that Nigeria’s democracy lacks majority participation.

“Out of the 93 million registered voters, less than one-third actually voted… Of every three people that voted, one voted for Tinubu and two voted against him. But he is the President.”

He called this situation inconsistent with democracy:

“The minority is ruling the majority… You have to find a solution.”

Backing the idea of a single six-year term, he argued: “The disruptions that come in the process of looking for second term are themselves morally intolerable… If after six years you have not downloaded the great ideas you have, it means you have no idea.”

Despite his critiques, Anya sees potential in young Nigerians: “Have you wondered why young Nigerian men and women are winning laurels globally?… We should start looking at: What is it that God is telling us?”

Anya insisted that returning to foundational values is the only path to national healing.

“Let’s go back to the fundamentals… It will give you a path to the future… A society where there is no punishment is not a normal society.”

Amotekun Operative Killed, Another Injured In Clash With Soldier

Tragedy struck in the Ijeda-Ijesa community of Osun State as an operative of the Amotekun Corps, identified as Samuel Tope, was killed during a violent confrontation with a soldier.

Another Amotekun operative, whose name was not immediately disclosed, sustained serious injuries in the incident.

DAILY GAZETTE learnt that the clash stemmed from tensions that escalated between members of the local Amotekun Corps and a soldier, Fiyinfoluwa Opejobi, who had returned to the community to conclude his marriage ceremony.

A resident of Ijeda-Ijesa, who spoke under the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, narrated the series of events leading up to the confrontation:

“But on Friday, he (Opejobi) was invited into the Amotekun office in Ijeda for questioning. There was a robbery incident and Opejobi was invited by the Amotekun men for questioning over the incident. An operative of the corps raised allegations against him. He honoured the invite on Friday.

“But on Saturday, after he had concluded his mini marriage ceremony which brought him back home, he told two of his friends that joined him for the event that someone had made a false allegation against him and they went into town to look for the person. They eventually found the man who reported him around the Ijesa Ijesa Roundabout. They beat him to a state of coma and left the scene.”

Outraged by the attack on their colleague, Amotekun personnel reportedly mobilised and began searching for the soldier and his companions.

Another community resident, who also requested anonymity and lives along Ijebu-Jesa Road, said the confrontation eventually erupted at a hotel where the soldiers were located.

“The soldier and his friends were wearing military attire, but they were not fully kitted. When information got to them that colleagues of the man whom they beat were looking for them, they left their rooms and waited in front of the hotel for them.

“I was inside the hotel when all that was going on. Before the Amotekun men got to the hotel premises, those soldiers were already waiting for them. It was during their clash that Tope Samuel was killed. During the clash, Opejobi was also injured. He had an open wound at the upper part of his head.”

In a statement released by the Osun Amotekun Corps Commander, Mr. Adekunle Omoyele, the organisation accused Opejobi of launching an unprovoked attack.

“The incident occurred around 5:45 pm when a soldier, identified as Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa, who was recently recruited into the Nigerian Army, launched an unprovoked assault on the Amotekun operative.

“Fiyinfoluwa, dressed in military camouflage, approached the Amotekun Station in Ijebu-Jesa with hostile intent. He allegedly declared that part of his reason for joining the army was to ‘deal decisively’ with Amotekun personnel. Shortly after, while Officer Tope was riding a motorcycle, the soldier and unidentified accomplices stopped him and launched a violent attack.

“The assailants reportedly struck Tope on the head with a blunt object, causing him to fall from the bike. The brutal assault reportedly lasted for about 20 minutes, with no intervention, leaving Tope in a pool of blood. After the attack, the soldier reportedly fled the scene on a commercial motorcycle.”

Omoyele added that the matter had been reported to both the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu-Jesa and the Military Barracks in Ede.

When contacted, Osun State Police Command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident and said an investigation was underway.

“Based on the report they made, it seems the Amotekun personnel and the soldier had a misunderstanding before yesterday (Saturday).

“Yesterday, according to what they said, the soldier attacked the two Amotekun men. And in the process, he brought out his jackknife, which he used on both of them.

“The Amotekun officers sustained injuries, and in the process of taking them to the hospital, one of them gave up the ghost, while the other one is still receiving treatment at the hospital. We are going on with our investigation.”

Efforts to get an official response from the Nigerian Army were unsuccessful. A text message response from a military officer, identified as the Chief of Staff to the Commander of the barracks, read:

“Kindly go to the barracks, Sir and confirm accordingly.”

Abductors Of Six Nigerian Law School Students Demand N120m Ransom

The kidnappers of six students from the Nigerian Law School have reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦20 million for each victim, bringing the total to ₦120 million.

DAILY GAZETTE gathered that the students were abducted in Benue State while traveling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to the Yola campus of the Nigerian Law School in Adamawa State.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, July 26, as the students were returning to campus after their court externship break, with academic activities set to resume on Monday.

A fellow student at the Yola campus, Damilare Adenola, confirmed the abduction:

“Six students of the Nigerian Law School have been reportedly kidnapped by suspected bandits while travelling to resume school after their court externship break.”

He further identified some of the victims as Rev. Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David.

Adenola added that the abduction reportedly took place along the route between Wukari in Taraba State and a region of Benue State, a location known for insecurity and frequent attacks on commuters.

New developments on Sunday revealed that the suspected kidnappers had made contact with relatives and colleagues of the victims to negotiate the ransom payment.

One student, Chisom, recounted how he initially dismissed the news but became alarmed after trying to reach some of the missing students:

“We heard the news this morning (Sunday) that some of our classmates were abducted. I didn’t want to believe it, so I started making a few calls because I know all of them. I tried to call three of the victims, but their numbers were switched off.”

He continued: “When I tried one of them again, he picked up the call. There was noise in the background, but when he finally spoke, he screamed that he had been kidnapped and told a colleague to send N20m for his release.”

Chisom also spoke with another classmate in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, who had heard about the abduction days earlier.

“He told me he’d been aware of the abduction since Thursday. According to him, the wife of one of the victims reached out to inform him about it. That was when we confirmed that the kidnapping happened in Benue State,” he added.

A student leader at the Yola campus, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, said:

“We are currently in Yola. We have contacted the Adamawa State Police Command. We are just waiting for more updates from them. We haven’t got any concrete information yet.”

When reached on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Adamawa State Police Command, Yahaya Suleiman, confirmed that the command was aware of the abduction, but emphasized that the incident did not occur within their jurisdiction:

“The abduction did not occur inside Adamawa State. I will encourage you to contact the Benue State Police Command for more details.”

He also assured the public that efforts were underway to rescue the victims:

“We cooperate not only with the police in other states but also with other sister agencies to ensure that those coming into Adamawa are safe, without harassment or intimidation.”

“The command is collaborating with officers and men of the Benue State Police Command to ensure these students are rescued,” he added.

At the time of this report, attempts to reach Anene Catherine, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to her phone had not been returned.

This incident adds to the growing list of security challenges faced by law school students.

In 2022, gunmen abducted two students from the Agbani campus of the Nigerian Law School in Enugu State.

Those students were reportedly kidnapped at Eke Agbani Market, where they had gone to buy food.
