Court Stops Edo Govt From Inaugurating New Electoral Body

The National Industrial Court in Benin City has issued a restraining order barring the Edo State Government from inaugurating a newly constituted Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

This interim order is part of an ongoing legal battle over the dissolution of the previous commission, which the claimants argue is unconstitutional.

The case, presided over by Justice A. Adewemimo, was filed by the former EDSIEC Chairman, Justice James Oyomire (retd), and six other commissioners: Mrs. Gladys Idahor, Uduafi Gabriel, Mr. Felix Ebhota, Mr. Anthony Okekuoyen, Mr. Michael Ekhaisomi, and Mr. Vincent Aimienota. They are represented by counsel Gabriel Uduafi.

The plaintiffs are challenging their removal by Governor Monday Okpebholo, claiming their tenure, which began on March 23, 2022, is valid until March 23, 2027, and that no constitutional grounds were followed in their dismissal.

The defendants in the suit include the Governor, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, and seven individuals newly appointed to the reconstituted EDSIEC: Asein Victor, Ighomo Thomas, Imafidon Osarodion, Dr. Suleman Ikhuoria, Anthony Aikpogjome, Umoru Frank, and Aremiyau Momoh.

In an interim ruling dated July 22, 2025, the court prohibited all parties from taking steps that might undermine the final judgment.

This came after Uduafi informed the court that, despite a pending motion for an interlocutory injunction, the Speaker had released a timetable for local government elections, an action that could preempt the court’s decision.

Justice Adewemimo warned that no party should engage in actions that could render the court’s verdict ineffective.

He also clarified that the death of the first claimant, Justice Oyomire, does not invalidate the suit, as the remaining six commissioners are still actively involved.

According to an affidavit filed by Oyomire before his passing, the commissioners were lawfully appointed and could only be removed for proven misconduct or incapacity, a process requiring a two-thirds resolution from the State Assembly, which he said did not occur.

Oyomire recounted how, on December 17, 2024, they learned through a government announcement in the media that the commissions, including EDSIEC, had been dissolved.

The commissioners were directed to hand over all government property without receiving any prior notice or formal dissolution letter.

A protest letter submitted by their legal team on December 23, 2024, went unanswered, prompting them to seek legal redress.

The suit questions the legality of the dissolution and seeks a court declaration affirming their rights under the Constitution and relevant Edo State laws.

The claimants also requested that the new appointees be restrained from taking over the commission’s duties until the matter is resolved.

Furthermore, they are demanding compensation totaling ₦484,898,056.55 in unpaid salaries from November 2024 to March 2027, with 23% annual interest, ₦100 million in aggravated damages, and ₦35 million for legal fees.

They argued that upholding the status quo would not harm the defendants and expressed readiness to compensate them should the application be deemed frivolous.

France Defends Decision To Recognize Palestinian State

France has stood firm on its decision to officially recognize Palestinian statehood, despite facing criticism both at home and abroad.

The announcement was made by President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, ahead of a United Nations meeting scheduled for September, making France the most influential European country to take this step.

Macron’s move was sharply condemned by Israel, which accused France of “rewarding terror.”

Meanwhile, U.S Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled the decision as “reckless” and argued that it “only serves Hamas propaganda.”

Adding a touch of satire, Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, joked on X (formerly Twitter) that Macron failed to specify where the future Palestinian state would be located.

Huckabee quipped, “I can now exclusively disclose that France will offer the French Riviera & the new nation will be called ‘Franc-en-Stine.’”

The militant group Hamas, designated a terrorist organization by both the U.S. and the European Union, welcomed France’s recognition, calling it “a positive step in the right direction toward doing justice to our oppressed Palestinian people.”

However, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot countered this view on Friday, asserting that the recognition actually opposes Hamas’s agenda.

“Hamas has always ruled out a two-state solution. By recognising Palestine, France goes against that terrorist organisation,” Barrot stated on X.

He emphasized that France’s action represents “backing the side of peace against the side of war.”

Within France, reactions were mixed. Left-wing groups praised the move, while right-wing figures criticized it. The government itself seemed divided, with some officials choosing silence.

Jordan Bardella, leader of the far-right National Rally (RN), criticized the announcement as “rushed” and accused it of giving Hamas “unexpected institutional and international legitimacy.”

Marine Le Pen, RN’s parliamentary leader, went further, saying France was effectively “recognising a Hamas state and therefore a terrorist state.”

On the left, Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the France Unbowed party, called the move “a moral victory,” though he lamented that the recognition was not immediate.

He warned that by September, Gaza could become a “graveyard.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, a right-wing politician with strained ties to Macron, avoided commenting, citing his focus on “a serious topic” related to the “security of French people on holiday.”

Francois-Xavier Bellamy, vice president of the Les Republicains party, described the recognition as “counter-productive” or, at best, “pointless.”

Bellamy warned it could endanger both Israeli and Palestinian civilians, victims of Hamas’s violence.

He also pointed out that Macron’s move deviates from previously stated conditions for recognizing Palestine, which included the demilitarization of Hamas, excluding the group from any government, releasing all Israeli hostages in Gaza, and securing recognition of Israel by several Arab states.

“None of these conditions have been met,” Bellamy said.

On the streets of Paris, some citizens voiced support. Julien Deoux, a developer, expressed that it was “about time” France took this step.

2027: Nigerians Need New Faces, Not Same Old Folks – Laolu Akande

As political alignments continue to shift ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, former presidential aide Laolu Akande has called for a fresh political direction, urging Nigerians to reject the recycling of old political figures and instead demand authentic leadership rooted in reform and policy.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme aired on Thursday, Akande expressed concerns over the current state of opposition politics in Nigeria. While he acknowledged the flaws within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he argued that the party remains more structurally organized than its opposition rivals.

“We need new faces, but they still have old folks,” Akande said, referring to the tendency of opposition parties to rely on familiar political actors rather than introducing credible alternatives.

According to him, the opposition continues to lean on outdated strategies and personalities that fail to inspire confidence among Nigerians.

“The characters at the forefront are not the ones that can get the job done. Nigerians would not be inspired by the same old personal vendetta politics,” he added.

Akande’s remarks follow recent comments by Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, who stated that his principal, Peter Obi, could contest the 2027 elections without him.

Akande interpreted this as a sign of internal discord within the Labour Party (LP).

“If the coalition is serious, Datti should be at the forefront to assure Nigerians of real change,” he noted, suggesting that the LP lacks cohesion and clarity in its direction.

He further criticized the opposition for lacking a clear manifesto and leadership identity.

“I think APC has better arrangements,” Akande said. “While the APC has issues, the opposition appears disorganized and without a clear political identity.”

He emphasized that the opposition seems more preoccupied with removing President Bola Tinubu than with offering Nigerians tangible policy alternatives.

“The opposition has allowed a dominant narrative to thrive, one that appears fixated on removing President Bola Tinubu without presenting viable policy alternatives,” he stated.

On the state of affairs within the APC, Akande acknowledged that while internal restructuring is ongoing, the party is taking deliberate steps to strengthen itself ahead of the next election cycle.

He referenced Wednesday’s high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, hinting at the possibility of a new national chairman.

“I think it is reasonable that there would be a new chairman today,” he said.

“There’s a visible onslaught toward the APC, but it’s easier to see where things are headed within the ruling party,” Akande added, stressing the importance of unity within the APC for electoral success.

He called for more civic participation and a shift toward issue-based politics.

Akande urged political leaders and parties to focus on addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including poverty, corruption, and institutional reform.

Reps Threaten To Arrest CBN Governor Over N5.2tn Unremitted Funds

The House of Representatives Joint Committee on Public Accounts and Public Assets has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest against the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, over the bank’s alleged failure to remit N5.2 trillion in operating surplus to the Federal Government.

In a statement released on Friday and jointly signed by Bamidele Salam and Ademorin Kuye, Chairmen of the House Committees on Public Accounts and Public Assets, the lawmakers accused Cardoso of consistently ignoring invitations to appear before the joint panel, which is probing violations of the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 and the Finance Act 2020.

The lawmakers noted that the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation, while discharging its constitutional mandate, reported that N5.2 trillion in operating surplus had not been remitted to the government between 2016 and 2022.

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission also corroborated this claim in a separate report to the National Assembly.

According to the joint committee, “The Finance Act 2020 mandates that dividends of all listed companies in Nigeria which remained unclaimed for six years or more and balances on accounts which have been dormant for six years in Deposit Money Banks shall be transferred into an established fund called Unclaimed Fund Trust Fund which is to be administered by the Governing Council comprising the Minister of Finance and Debt Management Office among others.”

They further noted that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, through a legal opinion, affirmed that the Finance Act 2020 is the appropriate legislation for overseeing dormant accounts and unclaimed dividends.

“Contrary to the position of the CBN that the Financial Institution Act of 2020 gives it the power to manage and control balances of dormant accounts,” the statement clarified.

Following submissions from relevant stakeholders, the Committee directed the CBN to remit N3.64 trillion, representing 70% of the undisputed amount, within 14 days from the receipt of its communication dated June 27, 2025.

This payment is to be made pending final reconciliation of the disputed figures by all parties.

Furthermore, the apex bank was instructed to disclose the total sum of unclaimed dividends and dormant account balances by June 30, 2025.

“The CBN should ensure that all unclaimed dividends and funds in the dormant accounts balances as defined above are transferred to the Unclaimed Fund Trust Fund account as provided by the Finance Act 2020, within 14 days of the receipt of the letter and receipt of the transfer be furnished to the House,” the lawmakers directed.

The committee expressed deep concern over the CBN governor’s non-compliance.

“Despite the unambiguous resolution, the CBN governor has failed to comply with the resolution and refused to appear before the committee to explain why he failed to do so,” the statement read.

Gunmen Kill Seven In Attack On Three Imo Communities

Gunmen launched a deadly assault on Friday across three communities; Umualoma, Ndiakunwanta, and Ndiejezie in Arondizuogu, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, killing at least seven people and leaving several others critically injured.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers rode into the communities on motorbikes and began shooting sporadically at residents.

Victims reportedly included bar patrons, shop owners, customers, and passersby.

A local source who spoke anonymously said the shootings occurred while people were relaxing at local bars and some were playing board games.

“The people who died were in different bars drinking, or were the people selling and attending to their customers. I heard they also shot at people who were playing a draft game to while away time. As I speak to you, about 12 people are lying dead, and many are critically injured due to running to seek safety,” the source told DAILY GAZETTE.

The Imo State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement issued Friday by its spokesman, Henry Okoye.

He reported that seven persons had been confirmed dead and several others sustained injuries.

Okoye stated that the assailants were suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN), and that the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, July 25, 2025.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has strongly condemned the gruesome attack carried out by gunmen suspected to be members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN in the early hours of today, 25th July 2025, at Ndi-Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno, all in Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA.”

“The senseless assault, which claimed the lives of over seven persons and left several others critically injured, was described by the CP as barbaric, inhumane, and totally unacceptable. He assured the public that the Command has deployed adequate operational and intelligence assets to identify, apprehend, and bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Okoye further noted that normalcy had been restored to the affected areas, with tactical teams actively combing the surroundings for the attackers.

“Consequently, the CP has led tactical units for intense combing of the affected areas and affirmed that the situation is now under control, and proactive security measures have been taken to forestall further attacks and restore lasting peace in the region.”

“While expressing heartfelt sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives, CP Aboki Danjuma prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for the injured. He also extended his condolences to the bereaved and encouraged them to remain strong during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.

SDP Disowns El-Rufai

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has formally distanced itself from former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, stating categorically that he is not a member of the party and has no authority to speak or act on its behalf.

Addressing a press conference on Friday in Kaduna, the Zonal Secretary of the North-West Zone, Inuwa Idris, made the party’s position clear.

“It has come to our attention that Malam Nasir El-Rufa’i has taken it upon himself to appear in various fora, including policy dialogues, stakeholder engagements, and even private strategy meetings purporting to speak on behalf of the Social Democratic Party,” Idris said.

He emphasized that El-Rufai has never been granted permission to represent the party in any form.

“Let this be made unequivocally clear to all: Malam El-Rufa’i is not authorised, mandated, or recognised by the SDP in any capacity to represent its interests, articulate its positions, or speak on its behalf.”

“His actions were carried out entirely without the knowledge, consent, or approval of the party’s national leadership including our dynamic acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Umar, among others.”

Idris further clarified that El-Rufai’s name is not listed in the party’s membership records. He also noted that the former governor has never participated in any SDP programme nor received any appointment or mandate at any level.

The Zonal Secretary reaffirmed the party’s leadership structure, citing Dr. Sadiq Umar, Chief Olu Agunloye (National Secretary), and Prince Adewole Adebayo, the SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, as the only recognized national figures.

He warned the public and political stakeholders to ignore any statements issued by El-Rufai under the SDP name.

Idris also took aim at Dr. Umar Ardo, accusing him of working to promote another party while using the SDP platform.

“We pass a vote of no confidence on Malam Nasiru El-Rufa’i. We call for the immediate suspension of Dr. Umar Ardo from SDP, as he is now a known promoter of a new political party, the ADC. Resorting to the use of the SDP platform is the height of desperation and a crass display of failure in political brinkmanship.”

He warned that impersonation of the party would not be tolerated and suggested disciplinary measures were forthcoming.

“Let this serve as a final warning for them. Desist from your fraudulent activities.”

“Any further impersonation or we will be compelled to call for a special committee by the powers of NEC to look into these matters with a view of publishing all the misdeeds across all available platforms.”

Idris reaffirmed the party’s commitment to transparency and announced that all future policy discussions or collaborations must go through officially recognized party representatives, whose identities are available on request.

Report Of Murder Of Five Women In New Market Fake, Misleading – Enugu Police

The Enugu State Police Command has described as false, a disturbing social media post alleging that five women who deal in fresh corn at New Market, Enugu, were lured by a man in a minibus under the guise of buying corn from his farm, but were later allegedly murdered and their mutilated bodies found by the roadside.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday, the command said the story is entirely false, unfounded and fabricated to cause public panic.

“No such incident has been reported, nor has any investigation or credible intelligence suggested the occurrence of the alleged crime.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, no report of missing or found persons matching the description in the viral post has been received, and no bodies have been discovered with missing organs as claimed.”

“This misinformation is clearly a deliberate attempt to incite fear, distort public perception, and undermine the relative peace and security currently being sustained in the State.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, urged residents to disregard the fake news and remain calm, while reaffirming the Command’s unwavering commitment to public safety and crime prevention.

He further directed operatives of the Command to identify and bring to book the originators and peddlers of the fake report for prosecution in accordance with extant laws.

CP Giwa warns that the dissemination of fake news is a criminal offence and will henceforth be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

He advised the public to always verify information before sharing, and encourages citizens to report suspicious activities or security concerns to the nearest Police Station, via the Command’s emergency numbers 08032003702 or 08086671202, or the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre on 112

FG Unveils Cancer Treatment Facility In Enugu, Reverses Medical Tourism

In a major move to improve healthcare delivery and reduce the country’s reliance on overseas medical treatment, the Federal Government has inaugurated a modern cancer treatment facility at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.

The newly commissioned Linear Accelerator and upgraded oncology infrastructure are part of efforts to equip Nigerian hospitals with advanced technologies and skilled personnel.

The government expressed concern over the rising cost of medical tourism, revealing that Nigerians have been spending more than $1 billion annually on healthcare abroad for the past 15 years.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who was joined by Minister of Finance and Economy, Wale Edun, and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stressed the Tinubu administration’s resolve to revamp the nation’s healthcare system.

“The President Bola Tinubu administration is passionate about changing the quality of healthcare in Nigeria,” Pate stated.

The facility was developed in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and Medserve, and is part of a broader federal initiative to enhance cancer treatment access across all regions of the country.

Highlighting the government’s increased investment in health, Pate explained:

“The President had, in the last two years, doubled the health budget, stressing that from about N1.7 billion last year, the budget was increased to about N2.3 billion this year.”

He also noted the rationale behind locating cancer treatment infrastructure across the country:

“The President means well for the people of Nigeria and had approved the installation of a modern linear accelerator in each of the country’s geopolitical zones based on his realisation that the major illness that takes Nigerians abroad was cancer.”

Meanwhile, the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) has unveiled a new pharmaceutical research centre designed to strengthen quality assurance in drug production and distribution.

Situated at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the facility will ensure that all pharmaceutical products are subjected to comprehensive evaluation before reaching the market.

According to NAIP, the aim is to enforce strict compliance with both national and international standards, enhancing trust in Nigeria’s drug industry.

“This commitment aims to enhance the integrity of Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector, confirming compliance with national and international standards,” the association said.

Beyond Anambra, NAIP plans to develop similar research hubs at wholesale centres in Kano and Lagos, creating a networked distribution and testing system that will support drug security and promote a more structured pharmaceutical environment.

The foundation-laying event was presided over by Dr. U.N.O. Uwaga, while His Royal Majesty Igwe Ezechuamagha I of Ogidi Kingdom was present as the Guest of Honour.

The significance of the project was emphasized by NAIP National Chairman, Pharm. Bankole Aminu Ezebuilo, who stated:

“This project is an important milestone for the pharmaceutical industry in Nigeria.”

Osun APC Rejects Alleged Defection Attempt By Governor Adeleke, Labels Him A ‘Political Liability’

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed it turned down an alleged move by Governor Ademola Adeleke to join its ranks, branding him a political liability and accusing him of running a corrupt administration.

The statement from the party followed Governor Adeleke’s endorsement alongside 27 chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of President Bola Tinubu as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The endorsement, according to the PDP caucus, was based partly on Tinubu’s Osun roots.

The PDP leadership, in a communiqué released after a caucus meeting, disclosed that Governor Adeleke had dropped his defection plan after meeting stiff resistance from both his party and the APC.

Nonetheless, the group reaffirmed their support for Tinubu’s re-election.

Reacting to these developments, Osun APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, issued a sharp rebuke of the governor’s purported move, accusing him of seeking political refuge out of fear of losing the 2026 governorship race.

“We state first of all that the highly informed Osun public aware that it was the fear of an impending 2026 election defeat that motivated the governor to desperately seek asylum in our party for political survival are excited by the treatment meted out to Governor Adeleke and his desperate loyalists,” Lawal said.

He further accused Adeleke’s government of incompetence and corruption, claiming it had alienated honest and visionary leaders from the PDP.

“We state first of all that the highly informed Osun public… are excited by the treatment meted out to Governor Adeleke and his desperate loyalists,” Lawal reiterated.

Describing the state administration as a “leprous house,” Lawal alleged that Adeleke had reduced the PDP to a hollow structure lacking integrity.

“Since 2023, when the PDP began to morally collapse and became the private loot of the Adeleke dynasty, individuals with integrity and vision have been leaving the tattered umbrella for the APC,” he said.

He accused the governor of imposing exorbitant fees on students at the University of Ilesa, with figures reaching N1.5 million per session.

Lawal also alleged that Adeleke had spent N13 billion on luxury vehicles for aides, defrauded thousands of teacher job applicants, and mismanaged close to N1 trillion within 30 months in office.

“Political parties are, by nature, open to entry and exit. However, when such an entry threatens the public image of the party or risks creating a perception crisis, the party is within its rights to deny such entry as was the case with Adeleke,” Lawal argued.

He emphasized that no endorsement or alliance would protect the governor from electoral defeat in 2026, asserting the APC’s readiness to reclaim control of the state.

“The governor’s support for President Tinubu would not shield him from defeat in the 2026 governorship election,” he declared.
