IGP Vows Support For Retired Officers’ Protest, Warns Against Political Exploitation

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has pledged full security support for retired police officers planning a peaceful protest over pension issues.

At the same time, he cautioned against attempts by political actors to manipulate the retirees’ grievances for personal or disruptive agendas.

In a statement released Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP condemned efforts to politicise the situation, saying it undermines both the police institution and public trust.

“It is disheartening to observe how certain actors have chosen to politicise a sensitive welfare issue, weaponising the legitimate grievances of our retired colleagues for ulterior motives,” the statement read.

“Their intent is not reform, but disruption. Their tactics involve twisting facts, inflaming sentiments, and sowing distrust in the public space. These actions do a disservice not only to our noble institution but to the integrity of public discourse in our country.”

The protest, described as “the mother of all peaceful protests,” is scheduled to take place on Monday, July 21, across the Federal Capital Territory and other states.

To ensure a smooth exercise, the IGP has instructed Commissioners of Police nationwide to uphold the rights of retirees and guarantee their protection.

Adejobi noted “The Inspector-General of Police has directed all Commissioners of Police to ensure the peaceful conduct of the protest within their jurisdictions, especially in the FCT and other states where formal notice has been received; provide adequate security coverage to our retired colleagues who have chosen to publicly express their grievances; prevent any hijack of the protest by miscreants, political actors, or non-retired agitators; sensitise officers and men under their command on the constitutional rights to peaceful assembly, and the obligation to show utmost respect to our retired colleagues; while deploying intelligence and operational resources to protect lives, maintain public order, and safeguard institutional integrity.”

He further appealed to the organisers and participants to maintain decorum.

“The Inspector-General of Police charges all officers to note that this protest, described as ‘the mother of all peaceful protests’, must not only be peaceful; it must be exemplary, and as such should stand as a national model for dignified expression of grievance and responsible public order management,” Adejobi said.

“We must show, by conduct and command, that the Nigeria Police Force is both professional and humane. He further reiterates that this is more than a directive; it is a call to institutional responsibility, a test of our maturity, our values, and our discipline.”

Addressing the substance of the protest, Adejobi clarified that the call to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) is not new. He explained that the struggle for improved pension terms has been ongoing for over a decade.

“The agitation for improved police pensions, particularly the call for exit from the CPS, is not a recent development. It has spanned over a decade. Since 2014, successive Inspectors-General of Police have demonstrated empathy, engaged critical stakeholders, and provided institutional support for this cause. Yet, despite these earnest efforts, the desired outcome has remained elusive; not for lack of will, but due to entrenched legal provisions, fiscal limitations, and administrative bottlenecks,” he said.

Nonetheless, he revealed that the current police leadership is actively working on alternative solutions to ease the financial burden on retirees.

These include tapping into internally generated revenue and forming partnerships with private sector entities for targeted pension support.

According to Adejobi, economic projections suggest that the benefits of the pension scheme will improve with time, especially for those retiring within the next five years.

WAEC Dismisses Viral Rumour On Cancellation Of 2025 WASSCE Results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has strongly refuted a widely circulated claim that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results had been cancelled.

The Council described the report as false, misleading, and the work of “mischief-makers.”

Over the weekend, social media was flooded with a fake press release purportedly stating that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had annulled the entire 2025 WASSCE due to “massive exam malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of exam materials.”

Reacting swiftly to the claims on Sunday, July 20, WAEC issued an official rebuttal signed by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina.

The statement firmly rejected the rumour and clarified the situation: “The said examination has not been cancelled.”

Although WAEC admitted it was uncertain of the origin of the fake report, it stressed that the intent behind the misinformation was clear.

“Though the source of the information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” the statement read.

The Council went on to reassure candidates and the general public that the marking of scripts had just been completed and that official results would be released no later than Thursday, August 4, 2025.

WAEC also took the opportunity to remind stakeholders that all legitimate communications from the Council are disseminated through its verified channels.

“The Council emphasised that all its official announcements are made via its verified social media platforms, accredited national media outlets, and the Public Affairs Department.”

It called on the public to ignore the viral misinformation.

“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication,” the statement concluded.

Court Orders Interim Forfeiture Of N1 Billion Linked To Ebonyi SSG, Governor Urges Caution

The Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has ordered the temporary forfeiture of over ₦1 billion allegedly linked to the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government (SSG), Professor Grace Umezurike, and her aide, Ngene Nwanna Onyeabor.

According to court records, Justice Maurine Onyetenu issued the interim forfeiture order on July 8, 2025, following an ex parte motion brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC alleged that the funds earmarked for the purchase of rice during the 2024 Christmas celebrations were illegally diverted from the Ebonyi State Government’s treasury into six separate accounts at United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Four of these accounts, the agency said, are owned by the SSG, while one account belonging to her aide allegedly received ₦1.014 billion.

The sixth account is registered under the name: Affordable Multi Services Nigeria Limited.

The anti-graft commission requested the court to freeze the accounts for 60 days to allow further investigation and possible prosecution.

It also asked the court to compel the respondents or any party with a claim to the funds to justify why the money should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

Justice Onyetenu granted all of the EFCC’s applications.

In response, Governor Francis Nwifuru advised against rushing to conclusions, stressing the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence.

Speaking at a Sunday church service at the Government House Chapel in Centenary City, Abakaliki, he said, “I received the news of the publication already before the Federal High Court, Uyo. She is presumed innocent until investigation reveals otherwise.”

The Governor, who is also a lawyer, cautioned against prejudgment, saying, “I am a lawyer, and I know it is imperative to establish the facts before judgment to avoid setting wrong precedents.”

He also suggested that his administration may carry out further changes to its executive team. While acknowledging that the recently conducted minor cabinet reshuffle was based on unmet expectations, he hinted that more dismissals could follow.

“Our vision, as contained in the People’s Charter of Needs, has not been satisfactorily realised,” Nwifuru said.

“That accounted for the minor reshuffle we did recently. We’re still assessing them (officials), and we shall do the needful if the need arises.”

Adada State Creation Long Overdue, Key To Ending South-East Marginalisation – Nnia Nwodo To Reps Panel

At a public hearing in Enugu on Saturday, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, made a passionate appeal to the House of Representatives’ Committee on Constitutional Review, urging them to end the long-standing marginalisation of the South-East by approving the creation of Adada State.

During his presentation, Nwodo emphasized that Adada State possesses the necessary resources and qualifications to become a viable state, both in terms of natural endowment and human capital. “The proposed Adada State has all it takes, including natural and human resources, to be made a state,” he stated.

He highlighted that the people of Enugu North Senatorial District currently account for 52 percent of the total population of Enugu State. When Isi-Uzo Local Government Area is included, the proportion increases to 56 percent, he explained.

“The people of Enugu North Senatorial district who constitute 52 percent of the population of the present Enugu state… with the addition of Isi-Uzo local government area, the state will be made up of seven local government areas, making it 56 percent of the population of Enugu State, that are seeking for the Adada State creation,” Nwodo noted.

He argued that this region was unfairly treated during past state creations under military rule, having been allocated only seven local government areas despite its population size.

“The area was marginalized when states were created during the military administration, reduced to only seven local government areas when it was supposed to have more local government councils,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the Adada State Movement, Chief James Ugwu, underscored the economic benefits of creating the state.

According to him, the region is rich in mineral resources and would contribute positively to the nation’s economic growth.

“There were mineral resources in the proposed state,” Ugwu said, adding that “it will add to the gross domestic products of the federal government.”

Adada State has been at the forefront of recent discussions on state creation, especially at constitutional hearings.

Notably, it received strong backing at a similar Senate public hearing held earlier this year, where it was one of three proposed states presented.

Steer Clear Of Senate Chamber For Your Own Good – Senate Warns Natasha

The Senate has directed Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central to stay away from its proceedings, stating that her six-month suspension has not yet lapsed.

In a Sunday statement, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu emphasized that no active court order exists compelling her return before the end of her suspension.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March 2025 following a heated dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements, during which she accused him of sexual misconduct, a charge he denied.

Citing a judgment by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, the senator announced her intention to resume legislative duties on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

The Senate spokesman, however, argued that the court’s ruling did not contain any “positive or mandatory order directing the Senate to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan prior to the end of her suspension.”

Adaramodu elaborated:

“It is therefore surprising and legally untenable that Senator Akpoti‑Uduaghan, while on appeal and having filed a motion for stay against the valid and binding orders made against her, is attempting to act upon an imaginary order of recall that does not exist. The Senate emphasizes once more: there is no enforceable order directing her immediate return to the chamber.”

He also issued a firm warning: “We advise the Distinguished Senator to refrain from any attempt to storm the Senate next Tuesday under a false pretext, as doing so would not only be premature but also undermine the dignity of the Senate and violate due process. The Senate, as a law‑abiding institution, is committed to upholding the rule of law and the integrity of its proceedings. It will not tolerate the disruption of its proceedings.

“Until then, she is respectfully advised to stay away from the Senate chambers and allow due process to run its full course.”

Adaramodu clarified that the Senate will consider both the court’s advisory opinion on amending its Standing Orders and her eventual recall at the appropriate time, and that the outcome will be communicated directly to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Executive Rascality – Olisa Metuh Slams Governor Okpebholo For Threatening Obi

Former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, has urged President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors against imposing undemocratic limitations on citizens’ constitutional rights.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Metuh rebuked Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for demanding security clearance from Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, before allowing him to enter the state.

Okpebholo’s warning followed Obi’s recent visit to Benin City, where he donated ₦15 million to a nursing school. The governor linked the visit to a spike in violence, stating:

“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 m. Where did he get it from?
After he left, three people were killed.
For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.”

Metuh, who is recovering from a spinal procedure, expressed alarm at the governor’s declaration, calling it a threat to democratic principles:

“I have been recuperating from a spinal procedure, but have just read the disturbing news that the elected Governor of Edo State, who is otherwise a decent and distinguished senator, has banned a fellow Nigerian from visiting his state.”

He cautioned that such actions set a dangerous precedent and should not become normalized, drawing a parallel to a similar incident in North Central Nigeria:

“Whilst one understands the zeal to prove wholesome support and loyalty to our president, it is incontrovertible that these acts, completely go against the bedrock and grundnorm of democratic governance, and are antithetical to the constitutionally guaranteed inalienable right to freedom and liberty irrespective of political beliefs or associations.”

Metuh further appealed directly to President Tinubu, reminding him of his legacy of inclusivity as Lagos State governor:

“We remember the Governor Bola Tinubu who ran a widely acclaimed all‑inclusive cabinet/government, and made Lagos home for all Nigerians then.”

He warned that the political elite’s continued silence on such actions could erode Nigeria’s democratic fabric:

“Sadly, so many of our leaders have kept mute either on account of political correctness or for fear of personal reprisals or possible exclusion in the sharing of political appointments or perhaps in their quest for plain material benefits.”

The former PDP spokesman concluded with a direct appeal to the president:

“Let Nigeria truly belong to all citizens and may all persons be accorded their freedom and liberties across the land,”
adding: “check this very disturbing trend by calling these governors to order.”

Tinubu Arrives In Ogun For Eighth-Day Prayer In Honour Of Late Awujale

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday arrived in Ogun State to participate in the eighth-day prayer held in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at the age of 91.

The monarch, a highly revered traditional ruler, was laid to rest on Monday in accordance with Islamic rites.

His eighth-day prayer, a significant Islamic tradition, was held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.

President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were received at the Gateway International Airport in Iperu by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

They were joined by other dignitaries, including Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as well as other South-West governors.

The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, confirmed Tinubu’s presence in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting his attendance at the prayer ceremony.

“President Bola Tinubu has arrived at the Gateway International Airport, Iperu, Ogun State, ahead of his visit to Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Oba Sikiru Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs and a symbol of tradition, peace, and progress in Ijebuland.

UniAbuja Didn’t Grab Land, Acting VC Replies Wike

Prof. Lar Patricia Manko, the Acting Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja), has dismissed allegations of land grabbing made by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, insisting that the university’s landholding is legitimate and federally sanctioned.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Manko addressed the controversy surrounding the university’s possession of 11,000 hectares of land, stating:

“The 11,000 hectares of land is a legacy asset given to the institution by the Federal Government.”

Her remarks come in response to accusations from Minister Wike, who reportedly expressed concerns over what he described as excessive land acquisition by the institution within the capital territory.

Acknowledging the authority of the FCT administration, Manko said:

“We recognise His Excellency Nyesom Wike as the FCT landlord,”
but maintained that the university’s land allocation was not only lawful but essential for its long-term goals.

“University land can never be too much,” she said.
“The institution has plethora of use for the property.”

She stressed that the land would support the university’s expansion, research, and infrastructure development in line with its national educational mandate.

How Awujale Facilitated APC Merger, Paved Way For Buhari’s Presidency – Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, presiding overseer of the Global Community Citadel Church (formerly Latter Rain Assembly), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting a state burial to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also paid tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, describing his role in Nigeria’s political development as pivotal.

Speaking during his “State of the Nation” address at his church auditorium on Sunday, Bakare reflected on the significance of both Buhari and the Awujale passing on the same day, calling it a moment of great national symbolism.

He highlighted Oba Adetona’s instrumental role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite his non-partisan status.

“Without Awujale’s pivotal intervention, APC would not have emerged as a political party,” Bakare said.

“Kabiyesi convened a key meeting at the Oriental Hotel in Victoria Island and brokered the agreement that led to the formation of the APC. Even at that, Kabiyesi was non-partisan, supporting any course he thought would facilitate good governance, strengthen the national interest, foster peace and further the course of building a united Nigeria.

“He remained, to the very end, an elder statesman, a patriot, a mentor, a loyal friend, and a rare gift to this nation.”

Bakare recalled that it was Awujale he approached to help convince Tinubu to lead the merger efforts that resulted in the APC’s creation and Buhari’s eventual victory in the 2015 presidential election.

The cleric, who ran as Buhari’s vice-presidential candidate in 2011 under the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), praised Buhari’s character and inclusive leadership style.

He said, “We must awake to the handwriting on the wall. President Muhammadu Buhari and Oba Sikiru Adetona left a legacy that reads loud and clear – The giant of Africa cannot stand on one leg.

“We cannot build Nigeria as a one-party state. The intersection of these two men played a critical role in the emergence of a virile political landscape with a strong enough opposition party to challenge the then-ruling party.

“We can only build on their legacy by ensuring that both the ruling party and the opposition are strong enough to guarantee good governance in the interest of the ordinary Nigerian.

“Their legacy also reminds us that we cannot stabilise our beloved nation on divisiveness. We cannot build a truly virile nation unless we build an inclusive nation.”

“Where we have been divided as a nation, let us remember the religious tolerance of a man who, for years, was wrongly labelled with the toga of religious fundamentalism when indeed, he was one of the most tolerant and fair-minded Muslims to walk this earth, twice opening the doorway for Christian leaders, Pastors to be specific, in politics and governance.”

Bakare further praised Buhari for his role in institutional reforms that empowered younger Nigerians and people with disabilities.

He said, “Where we have, in the past, polarised the political system and undermined political opponents, let us remember the virtues of a man who would rather present his case to the electorate than descend into the politics of mudslinging.”

He noted that Buhari “left a legacy of an Electoral Act that opened the doorway for Nigerian youth and persons with disabilities, positioning them to shatter glass ceilings through the Not Too Young To Run Act and the Disability Act.”

Rivers Council of Chiefs Vice Chairman Shot Dead

Gunmen suspected to be members of the Iceland cult group have killed Chief Ferdinand Dabiri, the Vice Chairman of the Obelle Community Council of Chiefs in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

According to community sources who spoke with DAILY GAZETTE, the fatal shooting occurred on Saturday evening, triggering widespread panic and leading many residents to flee the area for fear of further violence.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers were led by a notorious cult leader identified as Cairo.

The gang stormed the meeting venue where Chief Dabiri and other traditional leaders had gathered.

A local source in Obelle recounted the harrowing scene:

“Cairo came down from a motorbike with a gun, walked straight to Chief Dabiri, shot him twice and left after confirming that he was dead.”

The incident caused chaos in the area, with other chiefs reportedly running for their lives. Some residents also fled the community by Saturday evening as tension escalated.

Chief Dabiri’s second son, Joseph Eze Dabiri, confirmed the killing to reporters.

“I heard that a guy came with gun while my father was in a meeting at Omuwoka village in Obelle, shot at him twice and fled on Saturday evening,” he said.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that in November last year, women from the community had staged a protest to the Rumuji Police Division in Emohua LGA. During the protest, they accused Cairo, the same cult figure, of murdering Akpata Amadi, a member of the local vigilante group in Obelle.

Police spokesperson in Rivers State, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the latest incident and assured the public that authorities are actively investigating.

“Investigation is ongoing,” she said, adding that, “the culprits will be apprehended.”
