Don’t Enter Edo State Without Security Clearance – Gov. Okpebholo Warns Obi

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, advising him not to enter the state without prior security clearance.

The governor’s remarks came on Friday during a rally organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to welcome Hon. Marcus Onobun, a former member of the House of Representatives under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the APC fold.

Okpebholo’s warning followed Obi’s recent visit to Edo State, during which he donated ₦15 million to the St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing in Benin City for an ongoing building project.

In a viral video from the rally, Okpebholo linked Obi’s visit to renewed violence in the state.

“He came the other day and donated N15 million. Somebody that said he doesn’t give shishi, where did he get N15 million to donate to people.. By the time he left, there was crisis. Three people died in Benin,” the governor said.

He continued with a direct message to Obi:
“For that reason, tell Obi he should not come to Edo without telling me. I am sending a direct message to him that there’s a new sheriff in town.
His security will never be guaranteed. He must not come to Edo without security clearance.”

Governor Okpebholo also launched a broader attack on unnamed opposition figures, accusing them of corruption and complicity in derailing critical national projects.

“Some of them stole railway funds. Some were Senate Presidents for years and could not build roads to their villages. Some sold off Nigeria’s assets. These same people now want to form new parties. Today, SDP, tomorrow ADC, next ADA. We do not need insecurity merchants,” he said.

Meanwhile, Marcus Onobun explained his defection as both a strategic and ideological decision.

“I have seen what Governor Okpebholo is doing; Edo people have seen it. I am back home to support him so that our people can get more,” Onobun declared.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that Onobun’s switch to the APC comes just a month after state government authorities marked his house in Iruekpen for demolition, citing alleged involvement in cult-related activities.

PHOTOS: VC Leads Protest Over Unpaid Fees

In an unusual but symbolic demonstration, the Vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, Prof. Allen A. Agih led members of the university’s management staff in a public protest on Friday to enforce the institution’s policy of “No School Fees, No Exams.”

The awareness march took place around the university campus and was aimed at sensitizing students about the consequences of failing to pay their fees ahead of scheduled examinations.

The protest, described by observers as dramatic and unprecedented for a university administrator, was part of a broader effort to curb the increasing number of students defaulting on tuition payments.

Photos from the event captured the vice chancellor and top officials holding placards and addressing students directly as they moved through various parts of the campus.

University officials say the move is intended to reinforce accountability and ensure the sustainability of the institution’s operations.

Atiku’s Resignation A Familiar Trend, We Expect His Return – Damagum

The Acting National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Iliya Damagum, has reacted to the resignation of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing it as a familiar move among politicians.

Speaking to journalists on Friday at the Government House in Bauchi, Damagum addressed Atiku’s recent departure and the exit of others from the party.

He said the PDP is not surprised by Atiku’s move and remains optimistic about his possible return.

“Well, it is expected because this is not the first time and I don’t think it will be the last time. We are still expecting him any moment from now,” Damagum stated.

Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, resigned from the party on Wednesday.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, he cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for his departure.

In the letter, the former Vice President expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the PDP, saying the party had deviated from the ideals upon which it was originally built.

He noted that the party’s direction no longer aligned with its founding vision and principles.

Super Falcons Thrash Zambia 5-0 In WAFCON Quarters

Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance on Friday, defeating Zambia 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), held at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

The emphatic win pushes Nigeria, already record-holders with nine WAFCON titles, a step closer to their historic tenth championship, a quest they’ve dubbed “Mission X.”

Though many expected a tight contest between Zambia’s talismanic forward Barbra Banda and Nigerian star Asisat Oshoala, the game quickly tilted in Nigeria’s favor.

The Super Falcons took just two minutes to break the deadlock, with veteran defender Osinachi Ohale heading home the opener.

From there, the Nigerian side dominated possession and chances.

Esther Okoronkwo made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, before Chinwendu Ihezuo added a third goal just before halftime, clinically finishing a one-on-one opportunity to put Nigeria firmly in control at the break.

The second half brought more of the same. In the 69th minute, Tosin Demehin nodded in a well-placed free kick from Okoronkwo, and in added time, the Super Falcons added a fifth goal to seal a flawless performance.

Nigeria’s defense was resolute throughout, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie pulling off key saves to deny Zambia, including attempts by the ever-dangerous Banda.

The clean sheet marks another strong defensive showing from the Super Falcons in the tournament.

Coach Justin Madugu made several tactical substitutions in the second half, introducing Oshoala, Christy Ucheibe, and Deborah Abiodun for Okoronkwo, Jennifer Echegini, and Halimatu Ayinde. Chinwendu Ihezuo also made way for Sikiratu Isah late in the game.

Lagos Cautions Residents Against Fake Estate Agents On Social Media

The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to residents over the activities of fraudulent estate agents using social media platforms to promote fake listings for housing units.

The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, raised the alarm following a recent case involving the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Estate.

A video circulating online claimed that units in the newly commissioned estate were available for sale or rent, a claim the commissioner debunked.

“The advertised estate has been fully allocated, and its purported availability for sale or rent as stated in the online video is therefore a fraudulent act by the agent,” Akinderu-Fatai clarified.

He further stressed that the Lagos State Government does not authorize third-party agents to handle the sale, lease, or rental of housing units in any of its estates.

“The Estate department of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing is solely responsible for outright sale of housing units in Lagos State Housing Estates, while allocation for Mortgage or Rent-To-Own scheme is a responsibility of the Lagos State Mortgage Board,” the commissioner explained.

To protect themselves from scams, Akinderu-Fatai urged prospective buyers and members of the public to verify any claims about available properties directly with the appropriate authorities.

“Prospective home unit buyers and the public should conduct due diligence on any purported housing unit put up for sale by anyone by contacting the Estate Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing directly before making any decision to purchase,” he advised.

He also warned that the state government would not bear responsibility for financial losses resulting from dealings with unauthorized individuals.

“The Ministry of Housing and the Lagos State Government will not be liable for any loss incurred through patronage of fraudsters or impostors,” he stated, adding that, “any individual or organization caught engaging in the criminal act of deception shall be brought to book.”

In a related move to deter further fraudulent activities, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, issued a directive to all allottees of the Egan-Igando estate.

“Allottees of Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Estate must take physical possession of their flats or risk revocation of unoccupied flats,” Toriola warned.

According to him, the step is necessary to prevent fake agents from exploiting the situation by convincing unsuspecting members of the public that the flats are still available.

Landlord, Others Nabbed Over Murder Of Two Students

The Police in Ondo State says it has arrested a landlord and two others for kidnapping and murder of two students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in the state.

Mr Adebowale Lawal, State Commissioner of Police (CP), made this known on Wednesday in Akure while speaking with newsmen on the recent achievements of the command.

Lawal said that the two victims were Abah John Friday, 25 and his friend, Okah Andrel Eloho, 19, (female).

He also said that the landlord, Oladele Femi, confessed to initiating the plot and aiding in the concealment of the murders.

The CP explained that the arrest was made following a petition dated June 24, 2025, submitted by G.O. Omoedu & Co., Legal Practitioners, on behalf of one Mr Emmanuel Peter of Shagari Village, Akure, Ondo State,
Lawal said that the petition was written over the abduction of Peter’s younger brother, Friday and his friend, Eloho, who went missing on June 20, 2025.

“Upon receipt of the complaint, detectives from anti-kidnapping swung into action and launched an intensive investigation into the reported abduction.

“Forensic tracking led investigators to Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos, where an iPhone 14 Pro Max belonging to one of the victims (Friday) was recovered from one Abdul Mohammed Mubarak, 38.

“Mubarak confessed to purchasing the phone from one Ojo Michael, whose arrest was subsequently effected in Aramoko-Ekiti, while a Lexus RX 350 vehicle belonging to the victims was also recovered at the point of arrest.

“During interrogation, Michael confessed to participating in the robbery, abduction, and eventual murder of the victims.
“Michael further disclosed that the operation was masterminded by one Oladele Femi ‘m’—the landlord of the male victim.

“Femi allegedly engaged Micheal and another accomplice (identified as “Kola”, currently at large) to carry out the crime.

“Investigations revealed that the sum of N800,000 was transferred from the victim’s (Friday) account during their captivity,” he said.
Lawal, who explained that Michael admitted raping the female victim upon recognising him and unmasking his identity, said the suspect executed the girl along with her friend (Friday) to prevent them exposing him.

The CP said Michael and his accomplice (Kola) disposed the victims bodies at separate locations between Agbado and Ode-Ekiti in Ekiti State.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of Oladele Femi, who, during confrontation, confessed to initiating the plot and aiding in the concealment of the murders.

“Acting on this confession, detectives recovered the body of the female victim in a bush near Ode-Ekiti, and it has since been deposited at the General Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.

“Efforts are ongoing to recover the remains of the male victim, who is believed to have been dumped in a river by an accomplice still at large.

“This case stands as a tragic reminder of the brutality of premeditated crimes and the devastating consequences of betrayal and greed.

“The victims, young, promising undergraduates were senselessly raped and murdered in cold blood,” he said.

Lawal, therefore, assured the public that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspect at large, recover the remains of Abah John Friday, and bring all responsible parties to justice.

Atiku Desperate To Be President At All Costs, Wike’s Aide

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, accused former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar of being fixated on becoming Nigeria’s president.

“The only thing that interests Atiku Abubakar is to become Nigeria’s president,” Olayinka told Channels TV, adding with concern:

“I’m beginning to wonder whether a doctor prescribed ‘presidency’ for him, and if he doesn’t become president, something will happen to him.”

He also reacted to Atiku’s recent resignation from the PDP with scorn:

“Good riddance to bad rubbish. Today, the PDP has been so destroyed and damaged by this one man, Atiku Abubakar, who is now gone,” and warned,

“When highly spirited members of the party come together to rebuild the party, Atiku should not come back after he has failed in his new political journey because I know he is going to fail.”

Meanwhile, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo also weighed in on Atiku’s departure. On X, he criticized the timing of the resignation, which came shortly after news of former President Buhari’s death.

Keyamo wrote that the move showed “your obsession with your perennial presidential ambition knows no sympathy or empathy.”

He highlighted that Atiku had drafted and submitted the resignation “the morning after the passing away of the former president was announced,” suggesting it was meant to steal focus from the nation’s mourning.

Buhari’s Inner Circle Bypassed Me To Smuggle Memos To Him – Prof. Gambari Reveals

Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has detailed how certain influential figures in the former president’s circle covertly bypassed official channels to deliver memos directly to him.

Reflecting on his time at the Presidential Villa during a guest appearance on Inside Sources yesterday, Gambari explained that those in Buhari’s inner circle “knew his weak moment, they knew when to smuggle (memos) because they knew him as they interacted with him informally.”

When Gambari assumed the role of Chief of Staff on May 13, 2020, Buhari publicly made a clear directive: “All memos must go through the Chief of Staff before coming to him.”

He praised Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for adhering to this rule.

However, Gambari acknowledged that “our people still got their memos to him from behind because they knew his weak point and who to use and he never stopped them, but the advantage I had was that the memos came back to me.”

Gambari also spoke warmly of Buhari’s leadership style, noting that the octogenarian admired his appointees and was reluctant to dismiss members of the cabinet despite public pressure.

Commenting on the concept of a presidential cabal, Gambari said it is inherent to the office.

“They say there was a cabal, there was. Every government has a cabal. They may call them a kitchen cabinet; they may call them a think tank.” He explained that this unofficial advisory group allowed the president to “let their guard down to and talk to freely.”

He elaborated on Buhari’s inner advisory circle: “Some have more powers than others, but I’m bold to say that every government has a cabal of some kind or another, whatever name it is called. So, there was (a cabal under Buhari).”

Gambari also pointed to precedent in previous administrations: “(Former President Olusegun) Obasanjo had a group of people. The Aboyades of this world and others, a small group of people.”

Recalling his own experiences in government, he cited that even during the military era, unofficial advisors existed.

“I was a minister 1884–1985 but I wasn’t privy to why he was removed by his colleagues… but one of the reasons I’m told was the military people were resenting the fact that Head of State Buhari was now getting a lot of advice and second‑guessing the decision of his military colleagues.”

Born on December 17, 1942, Buhari held power as Nigeria’s head of state from January 1984 to August 1985, and later served two elected terms from 2015 to 2023.

UK To Lower Voting Age To 16 In Major Electoral Reform

The British government announced plans on Thursday to extend voting rights to 16- and 17-year-olds in general elections, a landmark reform that would make the United Kingdom one of the countries with the lowest voting age globally.

This move fulfills a key campaign promise by the Labour Party, which won power last year, and is part of broader reforms aimed at addressing what critics describe as a “crisis” in the democratic system, particularly declining voter turnout.

The decision is expected to spark debate, especially from those who argue that the change benefits the ruling party politically, given younger voters are seen as more likely to favour the centre-left Labour platform.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the reform, saying: “I think it’s really important that 16- and 17-year-olds have the vote, because they are old enough to go out to work, they are old enough to pay taxes, so (they) pay in.”

“And I think if you pay in, you should have the opportunity to say what you want your money spent on, which way the government should go,” he added.

To implement the reform, the government must present a bill to parliament. With Labour holding a strong majority, the legislation is widely expected to pass.

Globally, only a few countries allow 16-year-olds to participate in national elections. Austria became the first EU country to do so in 2007, followed by others such as Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, and Cuba.

Labour ministers have framed the reform as a necessary step to “modernise our democracy” and improve civic participation.

They also noted that the change aligns with the current voting age already in place for regional elections in Scotland and Wales.

Additional reforms include automated voter registration, a system already used in countries like Australia and Canada, and expanding acceptable voter ID to include UK-issued bank cards.

These measures follow controversial electoral law changes by the previous Conservative government, which mandated photo ID at the polls, a move the Electoral Commission estimated prevented around 750,000 people from voting in last year’s election.

Harry Quilter-Pinner, executive director at the Institute for Public Policy Research, praised the government’s proposals as transformative.

“The biggest reform to our electoral system since 1969,” referencing the last time the voting age was lowered, from 21 to 18.

He emphasized the impact such reforms could have: “Lowering the voting age and introducing automated voter registration could add 9.5 million more people to the voter rolls.”

“Our democracy is in crisis, and we risk reaching a tipping point where politics loses its legitimacy,” Quilter-Pinner warned, endorsing the government’s plans.
