96 Para-Veterinary Graduates Inducted, Certified To Operate In Enugu

Governor Mbah,

A total of 96 para-veterinary graduates from the Enugu State Veterinary School and Investigation Centre, Achi, have been officially inducted and presented with certificates of operation.

The induction was part of activities marking the Enugu State 2025 World Veterinary Day celebration, held under the theme: “Animal Health Takes A Team.”

Declaring the event open in Enugu on Monday, Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, commended the dedication and professionalism of veterinary workers globally.

He noted that the theme, “Animal Health Takes a Team,” accurately captures the spirit of collaboration needed to safeguard the health of animals, humans, and the environment.

“According to him, in Enugu State, we firmly believe that building robust animal health systems is a team effort; a synergy among veterinarians, para-veterinarians, policymakers, farmers, academics, and community stakeholders.”

“In Enugu State; together, we are driving a transformative agenda that bolsters not only animal health but also our nation’s agriculture and food security,” he said.

Governor Mbah expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), its President, and Council for choosing Enugu to host this year’s national celebration.

He also congratulated the newly inducted para-veterinary professionals.

The governor lauded the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) for setting up the Veterinary Practice and Premises Regulations Committee, stating that it would ensure veterinary facilities in the state uphold the highest standards of quality and accountability.

Highlighting his administration’s achievements, Mbah said “the Enugu State Anti-Open Grazing and Ranching Control Acts which have been signed into law; thus, positioning the state at the forefront of organised and sustainable livestock farming so as to put a permanent end to the issues of farmers-herders crisis.”

“Thus, de-risking the entire livestock value chain in the state for potential investors.”

He further mentioned the “Revamping of the School of Veterinary and Investigation Centre, Achi in Oji River LGA through which the state have elevated veterinary education and training to international standards.”

“I am happy that today the Veterinary Council of Nigeria has recognised the State Government’s efforts in this direction by certifying our para-veterinary graduates,” he said.

Additionally, Mbah revealed that “Upgrading and transforming of the State Veterinary Clinic facility into a state-of-the-art Artificial Insemination Centre and Diagnostic Centre, thereby enhancing our capabilities in livestock reproduction and disease management.”

He also announced the ongoing “construction of the South-East Regional Veterinary Reference Hospital which is a World Bank-assisted initiative in partnership with the state government coordinated by the L-Press Team.”

“This pioneering project is set to become a regional benchmark for excellence in veterinary care,” he added.

Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalising the entire agricultural value chain:
“These initiatives are not only modernising our systems but have also paved the way for sustainable development and improved livelihoods for our people,” he stated.

Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Dr. Moses Arokoyo, appreciated the Enugu State Government for hosting the event.

Arokoyo, represented by Dr. Godwin Abonyi, who also chaired the event, said the celebration is organised annually to raise public awareness about the critical role of veterinary medicine in national development.

He highlighted the association’s achievements, stating “we have strengthened our advocacy for better health policies, improved access to veterinary drugs and empowering the next generation of Veterinarians.”

However, he also expressed concerns about unemployment among young veterinary graduates, saying “however, the association decries a situation of poor unemployment opportunities for young veterinarians and appeal to both the Federal and State Governments to address this issue of unemployment.”

Arokoyo further urged continued investment in the veterinary sector, emphasizing “I will appeal to both our partners, government and stakeholders to continue investing in the veterinary sector as a healthy animal population means a healthy human population.”

“We should break the isolation silos, share knowledge and build systems that reflect the reality that animal health is human health,” he said.

The President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, Prof. Matthew Adamu, alongside the acting Registrar, Dr. Fadipe Oladotun, formally inducted and certified the 96 para-veterinary graduates.

They encouraged the new inductees to uphold the oath they had taken and to serve as good ambassadors of the veterinary profession.

The event was organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation in collaboration with the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association.

Kano Queries Two Judges, Suspends Registrar Over Corruption Allegations

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission has taken disciplinary action against two judges of the Upper Sharia Court over allegations of judicial misconduct.

At its recently concluded 80th meeting, the commission reviewed and adopted the recommendations from the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee’s investigations, leading to sanctions against the affected officials.

Judge Mansur Ibrahim of the Upper Sharia Court received a formal warning after evidence confirmed he used derogatory language toward a litigant.

Similarly, Judge Nasiru Ahmad was issued a query and formally cautioned for ordering the detention of a judgment debtor under circumstances that raised concerns about personal interest and compromised judicial impartiality.

In a statement issued Sunday evening by Baba Jibo Ibrahim, spokesman for the Kano State judiciary, the commission emphasized its expectations for judicial officers to exercise restraint and uphold the dignity of court users.

The statement reiterated that discretionary powers must be applied fairly and objectively to maintain public trust in the judicial system, stressing the commission’s “zero-tolerance policy for misconduct and corruption.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Adamu, a Principal Registrar II at the High Court of Justice, has been suspended for six months without pay.

His promotion has also been deferred after he was found guilty of verbally assaulting and attempting physical combat with a superior officer.

Adamu had previously received several queries for similar offenses and was ultimately found guilty of gross misconduct.

Additionally, Maigida Lawan, a principal Registrar at the Sharia Court of Appeal, faced disciplinary measures after being found guilty of soliciting and accepting improper gratification under false pretenses.

The commission demoted Lawan from Grade Level 13 to Grade Level 12 and suspended him for six months without salary.

According to the commission’s statement: “In line with the mandate, the Commission adopted the recommendations of the investigations carried out by the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee and resolved to suspend two court registrars and issue formal warnings to two Upper Sharia Court judges whose conduct fell short of expected standards.”

The commission further warned that “In addition to the specific sanctions against those individuals, the Commission issued a strong warning to all court staff, anyone found engaging in corrupt practices will be directed to proceed on compulsory retirement, as the JSC will not and cannot condone any act of corruption.”

Court Sentences Osinachi’s Husband To Death By Hanging

Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the ruling on Monday after dismissing Nwachukwu’s no-case submission.

The court found him guilty of culpable homicide related to the death of his wife, which occurred on April 8, 2022.

Nwachukwu, who was arraigned on June 3, 2022, faced a 23-count charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The charges against him included culpable homicide, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mrs Aderonke Imana, presented 17 witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and tendered 25 exhibits to support its case.

The defendant also took the stand in his own defense, calling four witnesses and submitting four exhibits.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme, in her judgment, held that the prosecution had “proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Despite pleas for leniency from Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, the court sentenced him to death by hanging on Count 1.

In addition to the death sentence, Nwachukwu received prison sentences ranging from six months to three years on various other counts and was fined a total sum of N700,000.

Osinachi Nwachukwu, who died at the age of 42, gained national attention in 2017 after her collaboration with Prospa Ochimana on the gospel hit “Ekwueme.”

Following her death, colleagues and acquaintances accused Peter Nwachukwu of subjecting her to repeated domestic abuse, allegations that ultimately led to his arrest and prosecution.

2027: Stifling Opposition Voices Could Trigger Your Downfall – Former Governor Lamido Warns Tinubu

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the alleged politicization of federal institutions to stifle opposition voices could ultimately trigger the downfall of his administration.

Lamido, speaking to journalists in Birnin Kudu after his election as a national delegate for the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress, voiced his concerns openly.

“The use of government institutions as tools for political persecution will not only tarnish the reputation of the presidency but could also lead to its undoing,” he warned.

Criticizing what he described as an emerging pattern of governance reminiscent of authoritarian rule, Lamido saidsaid.

“What we are witnessing today is an abuse of power that is reminiscent of authoritarian regimes, and if unchecked, it will crumble under the weight of its own injustices.”

He accused President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of “weaponising” federal agencies to undermine opposition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We are seeing the rise of a system where agencies meant to serve the people are being deployed to silence those who dare to challenge the status quo,” Lamido stated.

Expressing hope that the situation could be corrected, he urged Nigerians to stay alert and resist attempts to suppress democratic freedoms.

“The truth always has a way of emerging,” he emphasized.

“No matter how much you try to silence the voices of dissent, the people will always find a way to rise. History will judge us all,” Lamido concluded.

North Korea Confirms Deployment Of Troops To Support Russia In Ukraine War

North Korea has officially confirmed for the first time that it deployed troops to assist Russian forces in the ongoing war against Ukraine.

In a report published by the state-run KCNA news agency, Pyongyang’s military stated that its soldiers contributed to the “complete liberation” of the Kursk border region, acting under the directive of leader Kim Jong Un.

The announcement follows recent remarks by Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, who publicly praised the “heroism” of North Korean troops, marking the first acknowledgment from Moscow of their involvement.

Western intelligence sources had previously informed the BBC that about 11,000 North Korean troops were deployed to Kursk last year, and that at least 1,000 had been killed over a three-month period.

While Gerasimov claims that Moscow has now fully regained control of the western Kursk region, Ukraine continues to deny these assertions.

Responding to North Korea’s statement, the United States warned that Pyongyang must now take responsibility for helping to prolong the conflict.

KCNA further explained that the decision to send troops was made under the terms of a mutual defense treaty between North Korea and Russia.

According to the agency, “They who fought for justice are all heroes and representatives of the honour of the motherland,” quoting Kim Jong Un.

KCNA emphasized that the battles in Kursk demonstrated North Korea and Russia’s “alliance and brotherhood,” and noted that the “friendship proven by blood” would “greatly contribute to expanding the relationship in every way.”

The report also stated that North Korea is prepared to support the Russian military again if needed.

However, it remains unclear what the future holds for the North Korean soldiers after their mission in Kursk concludes, including whether they will be repatriated.

Initial reports about North Korean troop deployments surfaced in October last year, following closer ties between Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin.

This deepening relationship included a pact where both leaders agreed to back each other if either faced “aggression.”

Military experts have raised concerns about the deployment, noting the inadequacy of the North Korean soldiers for modern warfare.

Col Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British Army tank commander, remarked earlier this year: “These are barely trained troops led by Russian officers who they don’t understand.”

Despite these limitations, Ukraine’s top military commander Gen Oleksandr Syrskyi had warned that the North Korean forces were still creating significant challenges at the front.

“They are numerous. An additional 11,000-12,000 highly motivated and well-prepared soldiers who are conducting offensive actions. They operate based on Soviet tactics. They rely on their numbers,” he told Ukraine’s TSN Tyzhden news programme.

‘Poverty Worsened, No School Or Hospital Built In Your 8 Years As Anambra Governor’ – Sanwo-Olu Fires Back At Obi

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has strongly rebuked Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following remarks Obi made at Johns Hopkins University comparing Nigeria’s poverty levels with those of China and Vietnam.

Speaking during the event, Obi said, “The question then is, what exactly did these countries do to be able to achieve the desired growth and development? That is where political leadership comes in.”

“These comparable nations, and, indeed, other progressive nations, unlike Nigeria, have competent leadership with character, capacity and compassion, committed to prioritising investment in critical areas of developmental measures: education, health, and pulling people out of poverty.”

Reacting, Governor Sanwo-Olu issued a statement titled “Factually Addressing Mr. Peter Obi’s Criticism of Nigeria at Johns Hopkins University,” where he took issue with Obi’s assertions, accusing him of worsening poverty during his tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Sanwo-Olu said, “On Thursday, April 24, 2025, former Governor Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2023 election, was at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he made several disparaging comments about Nigeria.”

“He made unflattering remarks not just about the incumbent Nigerian government, but also about Nigeria. I also find Mr. Obi’s pattern of behaviour disturbing. When prominent Nigerians go overseas, they ought to project Nigeria positively.”

He added, “They do not have to do that for the government. But we all owe a duty to market Nigeria on the global stage rather than de-market her. That is what true patriotism is about.”

Sanwo-Olu questioned Obi’s record on poverty alleviation, particularly investments in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.

He argued, “Now, I find it somewhat ironic that a man like Mr. Obi, who did not build a single school or a stand-alone hospital throughout his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra or sustainably provide credit facilities, would criticise the government of Nigeria, which is actively doing that.”

Highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s record both as governor of Lagos State and now as president, Sanwo-Olu noted, “I say this because the president of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is my predecessor, and as governor of Lagos and now President of Nigeria, has built over 200 schools and provided student loans to more than 200,000 undergraduates of Nigerian tertiary institutions.”

“In less than two years, he has provided over half a billion dollars in credit facilities to small and medium-scale enterprises.”

According to Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu’s governance significantly reduced poverty: “Tinubu, during his tenure as Lagos governor, reduced poverty by over 46 per cent, arguing that ‘the best predictor of the future is the past.’”

Turning attention back to Obi, Sanwo-Olu stated, “But let us examine the messenger, not just the message, and look at the issuer as well as the issues.”

“Mr. Obi talks a good game. But was he able to reduce poverty while he governed Anambra? Perhaps we can let the facts speak for themselves.”

Sanwo-Olu cited statistics to support his position: “Under Peter Obi as a two-term Anambra Governor, poverty in Anambra increased. It did not reduce. Before Peter Obi became Anambra Governor on Thursday, June 14, 2007, the poverty rate in Anambra was 41.4 per cent.”

“But after only two years in office, the poverty rate in Anambra jumped to 53.7 per cent. But the interesting thing is that five years after Peter Obi left office, his successor, Willie Obiano, reduced the poverty rate in Anambra from almost 60 per cent to 14.8 per cent.”

Concluding his response, Sanwo-Olu declared, “As such, I am not sure that Mr. Obi is morally well placed to make the alarming claims he made about Nigeria at Johns Hopkins.”

“Mr. Obi contributed to the increase in poverty in Nigeria. Governor Tinubu, as he then was, was responsible for lifting millions out of poverty. Being that that is the case, who should criticise who?”

Namibian President Sacks Minister Over Rape, Kidnapping, Bribery Allegations

Sacked Minister,

Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari, Namibia’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, has been dismissed from his position following serious criminal allegations, including rape, bribery, and kidnapping.

The decision to terminate Hengari’s appointment was made by President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, with the dismissal taking effect on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Namibian Presidency on Sunday, “By virtue of the powers vested in the President by Article 32(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has relieved Hon. Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari of his duties as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform.”

“The termination of tenure takes effect from Wednesday, 23 April 2025 when Hon. Dr. Mac-Albert Hengari should have tendered his resignation. Hon. Hengari has also been withdrawn from the National Assembly.”

The allegations against Hengari involve the offering of a N$230,000 bribe to a 21-year-old woman who had accused him of multiple rapes, allegedly in an attempt to silence her.

He was arrested after reportedly making the payment.

Investigations by the police have uncovered 11 criminal charges against Hengari, including rape, kidnapping, and assault by threat.

Additional accusations cite crimen injuria, abduction, and violations of the Immoral Practices Act, with the incidents reportedly occurring since 2019.

Hengari is accused of raping the victim multiple times while she was still a minor, with the last incident allegedly taking place in September 2024.

The Namibian newspaper reported that the 21-year-old victim, who has been struggling with suicidal thoughts as a result of the traumatic experiences, has been placed under police protection and relocated to a safe house.

Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the national police spokesperson, confirmed that Hengari remains a suspect in the ongoing investigation.

Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo also affirmed that the victim, along with her mother and baby, has been placed under the care of a social worker for continued support.

2027: Tompolo Backs Tinubu’s Second Term, Expresses Hope For Fubara’s Return

Chairman of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign for 2027.

At the same time, the Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association (YYSA) has advised former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to disregard calls from certain political leaders urging him to join efforts to unseat Tinubu.

Speaking in an interview with Arise Television yesterday, Tompolo said it would be unjust to demand a return of power to the North so soon after former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration.

He stated: “We don’t want anybody to cause problems. He should be allowed to complete his two constitutional terms, then we will vote for another person to take over in 2031.”

“Tinubu is a good person. He has the experience to do everything and carry this country to a higher level.”

Tompolo called for respect for Tinubu’s four-year mandate and the constitutional opportunity for a second term.

He praised Tinubu as a seasoned and capable leader who can steer Nigeria to greater achievements.

Revealing plans for a national mobilisation, Tompolo said he intends to tour various parts of the country, including the North, to campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.

“We will do our part, even go out of our boundary to the northern part of Nigeria to talk to our brothers and compatriots, so that he will get a second tenure,” he affirmed.

He also disclosed that traditional rulers from the South South region had already given their endorsement for Tinubu’s second term bid, expressing strong confidence that nationwide support would guarantee his continued presidency.

On the Rivers political situation, Tompolo expressed optimism that the dispute between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, would be resolved.

He said: “The duly elected governor of Rivers is coming back. Our President is someone who has been protecting democracy for a very long time. There is no way he will truncate it,” he assured.

Meanwhile, the Yoruba Youth Socio-Cultural Association issued a statement from Ibadan yesterday, urging Kwankwaso to stay away from coalitions aimed at opposing Tinubu’s 2027 ambitions.

The YYSA National President, Olalekan Hammed, described Kwankwaso as “a heavyweight politician who is too big to stay long in an opposition party.”

Hammed further argued: “Looking at the situation, that coalition has no trait of formidability to dislodge the ruling party in 2027.”

“The political alliance that strategically removed former President Goodluck Jonathan from office in 2015 had many sitting governors from both the North and the South. It was a merger of about four to five political parties, which comprised ACN, CPC, nPDP and part of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).”

“It is that type of mega-colossal alliance that could be referred to as a coalition, not aggrieved party chieftains’ unionism being led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai.”

NLC Cancels May Day Celebrations In Rivers, Edo Over Emergency Rule, Political Interference

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called off centralised May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers and alleged political meddling in the affairs of the Edo State council.

Following this decision, the NLC national leadership directed all affiliated industrial unions in Rivers State to restrict their Workers’ Day celebrations to the NLC secretariat.

Similarly, unions in Edo State were instructed to mark the occasion independently at their various union secretariats.

The directive was contained in separate letters dated April 22, 2025, and addressed to the NLC chairmen in Rivers and Edo states.

The letters were signed by the Deputy General Secretary of the NLC, Ismail Bello.

The NLC expressed strong opposition to the emergency rule in Rivers State, which included the appointment of a sole administrator, and called for the immediate reinstatement of the elected government.

In Edo State, the NLC accused the current administration of political interference and of fostering factionalism within the state labour council.

In its letter to the Rivers State NLC Chairman, Alex Agwanwor, the Congress noted: “In line with our tradition, Workers’ Day will be commemorated on May 1, 2025. This year, Congress has finalised arrangements to mark the day with the theme, ‘Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,’ to be observed across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has raised concerns over what it termed an unwarranted delay by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in setting a hearing date for the legal challenge against the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA alleged that the delay “could be a red flag indicating that Justices of the apex court may be apprehensive about deciding on the landmark constitutional questions raised by the suit.”

The group warned that this perceived hesitancy risks undermining Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

It suggested that the delay might be a subtle tactic aimed at pressuring the appellants — 11 governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — into reaching a political settlement with the Federal Government rather than seeking a judicial verdict.

HURIWA also criticised the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly using the situation to blackmail some PDP governors into either switching political allegiance or endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s potential second-term bid under threats of political consequences.

Kwankwaso’s Political Future Uncertain As Mass Defections Hit NNPP, Kwankwasiyya Movement

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and its ideological arm, the Kwankwasiyya movement, are currently navigating turbulent waters as waves of defections unsettle their ranks.

Central to the unfolding drama is the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whose political future is now under intense scrutiny.

The most recent high-profile defection is that of Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South.

Although Sumaila has not officially announced his next political destination, a social media post showing him with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, coupled with his recent meeting with Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the APC national chairman, points strongly toward his imminent entry into the ruling party.

Sumaila’s move followed calls from his constituents urging him to join the APC.

This trend aligns with Ganduje’s earlier claim that the APC was poised to receive several NNPP lawmakers from Kano State.

“They’ve seen the handwriting on the wall,” Ganduje said.

“The APC is the only viable platform for serious politicians who want to deliver real governance.”

On Thursday, Ganduje hosted a reception for a batch of former NNPP/Kwankwasiyya leaders who had defected.

The group included Senator Kawu Sumaila; Hon. Kabiru Rurum (Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure); Hon. Abdullahi Sani Rogo (Karaye/Rogo); former Kano SSG Dr. Baffa Bichi; former House members Hon. Badamasi Ayuba and Hon. Sha’aban Sharada; ex-State Assembly member Zubairu Hamza Masu; and former NNPP commissioners Muhammad Diggol and Abbas Sani Abbas.

Except for Sharada, most had deep roots in the Kwankwasiyya movement but cited “injustice” within the group as the reason for their departure.

Ganduje indicated that a formal ceremony to officially welcome them into the APC would be announced soon.

The defections are not entirely unexpected.

Earlier in March, the NNPP’s Kano chapter suspended Sumaila along with three House of Representatives members—Aliyu Sani Madaki, Kabiru Alhasan Rurum, and Abdullahi Sani Rogo—for alleged anti-party activities.

Around the same time, the party also lost its only House of Representatives member from Jigawa State, Yusuf Galambi, who decamped to the APC.

These political developments have triggered widespread speculation about the future of Kwankwaso and his movement.

Some observers predict that he might rejoin the APC, perhaps positioning himself for a vice-presidential slot in 2027.

Others believe he could explore alliances with other parties, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Still, the biggest sticking point remains: would Kwankwaso be willing to work under Ganduje’s leadership? Or would President Tinubu intervene to create a smoother pathway?

One scenario reportedly under consideration would involve offering Ganduje an ambassadorial role to diminish his dominance in Kano politics, thereby easing Kwankwaso’s potential return to the APC.

Kwankwaso’s political journey began in 1992 when he won a House of Representatives seat under the SDP.

He later became Deputy Speaker. Following Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, he was elected Governor of Kano State under the PDP with Ganduje as his deputy.

After a stint as Minister of Defence and a federal envoy to Darfur, he returned as governor in 2011.

Their alliance frayed during Ganduje’s first term as governor, culminating in Kwankwaso’s move from the APC back to the PDP.

In 2019, Kwankwaso backed Abba Kabir Yusuf’s unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.

He later left the PDP and revived the little-known NNPP, under which he ran for president in 2023.

Though he only carried Kano State, the NNPP performed strongly, winning the governorship, two Senate seats, 18 House of Representatives seats, and a majority in the Kano House of Assembly.

After the 2023 election, President Tinubu sought to lure Kwankwaso into his government.

However, after Kwankwaso’s name was absent from the ministerial list, it became clear that talks had broken down.

Still, Tinubu instructed Ganduje to keep working on Kwankwaso’s return to the APC. Ganduje later claimed the collapse of the NNPP made Kwankwaso’s return inevitable.

“The truth is, Kwankwaso has no political future outside the APC,” Ganduje said.

“We are ready to receive him, but on our terms, not his.”

Attempts to get an official comment from Kwankwaso’s team were unsuccessful.

An anonymous source said: “Politics is about timing. We will speak when it matters most. Right now, it’s about studying the moves on the board.”

Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, NNPP Chairman in Kano and a close ally of Kwankwaso, downplayed the defections.

“To the best of our knowledge, only one person has left,” he said, referring to Senator Kawu Sumaila.

“Even he hasn’t officially told us. If he thinks the APC is his salvation, time will tell.”

Dungurawa added, “We dismissed him and others last month because, frankly, they brought no value to the movement anymore.”

However, he declined to comment on Kwankwaso’s next political move.

Engineer Buba Galadima, a longtime Kwankwaso associate, was more explicit.

He flatly dismissed suggestions that Kwankwaso might rejoin the APC.

“Kwankwaso has nothing to do with Ganduje’s APC. That’s a political circus,” Galadima said.

He added, “Even if there were talks, do you think Ganduje would be the one to announce it? He’s clinging to media relevance through our name.”

Galadima also scoffed at the idea of Kwankwaso joining forces with ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai under the SDP.

“Our ideology is different. We stand for the poor, and we reject politicians who enrich themselves at the expense of the people,” he said.

“God willing, our time will come. The 2023 elections were only a test. The real verdict is yet to be delivered by the people—and by God,” Galadima added.

Political analyst Dr. Kabiru Sufi from Skyline University, Kano, believes Kwankwaso is facing a defining moment.

“If he stays, he’ll need to rebuild his grassroots from scratch in some areas,” Dr. Sufi said, noting that many defectors played major roles in securing electoral victories.

“But if he defects—especially to a party other than APC—he will have to justify the move to both new allies and old enemies,” he said.

Even if Kwankwaso rejoins the APC, reconciling with Ganduje’s camp would be challenging.

“He must convincingly explain why he’s returning to a party he once criticised, or risk losing part of his base,” Dr. Sufi warned.
