2027: We’re Ready To Overcome Sabotage, Internal Ambitions – Malami

As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has expressed confidence that the emerging opposition coalition is well-prepared to withstand internal and external challenges that may threaten its unity and purpose.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Daily Trust, Malami acknowledged that political sabotage and internal betrayal are genuine risks in any coalition.

However, he emphasized that the group is not only aware of these threats but is also equipped to manage them as they arise.

“In a political arrangement, you cannot rule out any possibility, including the possibility of infiltration,” Malami said.

“But, one fundamental thing is, we are resolved to continue, we shall continue, and we shall overcome. We are working to overcome any challenge as it arises.”

The coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) and potentially unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, has been drawing increasing attention from political observers.

Malami, who served in the cabinet of former President Muhammadu Buhari, pointed out that political alliances naturally face hurdles such as personal ambition, infiltration, and strategic sabotage.

Yet, he reiterated that the coalition’s leadership is focused and committed to its cause.

“You cannot rule out the possibility of a crisis, you cannot rule out the possibility of infiltration, nor can you rule out all other negative possibilities”.

“We are resolved to overcome them. We work in the direction of overcoming them. That is the most fundamental and critical issue about it.”

When asked about the potential disruption that personal ambitions could cause within the coalition, Malami acknowledged their inevitability in political contexts. He stressed the importance of internal discipline and deliberate conflict management.

“Political engagement includes personal ambitions. But the most important thing is how hard you work in managing them.”

“We cannot rule out that possibility because political engagement is about ambitions. And ambitions are meant to be managed, and we are resolved to manage them as they arise.”

FCTA Official Queried, Arrested Over Alleged Leak Of Land Allocation Documents Involving Wike

A staff member of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mairiga Hassan Shahru, has reportedly been queried, arrested, and detained for allegedly leaking classified documents related to land allocations in the FCT.

According to the FCT Police Commissioner, Adewale Ajao, Shahru’s arrest has been confirmed and he is expected to be charged to court.

However, he has since been released on bail.

While Daily Trust could not independently confirm the specific document that led to the query, insider sources claim Shahru allegedly leaked a certificate of occupancy indicating land allocations to two sons of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The minister, during a live media chat on Thursday, denied the allegations.

He said the claims stemmed from mischief allegedly orchestrated by someone from Adamawa State, whom he declined to name.

Lere Olayinka, Mr. Wike’s Special Assistant on Public Communications, had also earlier denied that such allocations were made.

A letter of query currently circulating online, addressed to Hassan Mairiga Shahru (Land Resource Officer I), accuses him of misconduct under the Public Service Rules (PSR).

The letter cites several infractions:

“Unauthorised disclosure of official information to unauthorised persons, which constitutes a clear violation of PSR 100401 and 100402(j).”

“Breach of oath of secrecy which you swore to uphold upon assumption of duty under the PSR 100402(o).”

“Conduct unbecoming of a public officer as defined under PSR 100402(aa), thereby undermining the integrity and confidentiality required of your office.”

Signed by the Acting Director of Land Administration, Uzo Udegbunam J., and dated 4th July 2025, the query (Ref No. FCT/DLA/189) demands Shahru provide a written explanation within 24 hours on why disciplinary action should not be taken.

Colleagues at the Land Department confirmed Shahru’s arrest last Friday, saying the atmosphere in the office has become “tense” due to increased surveillance by top management.

A female staff member, speaking anonymously, expressed disbelief: “Shahru works in the department that handles new land applications and wouldn’t typically have access to approval or allocation documents.”

Another colleague remarked, “To be frank with you, a lot of things are going on; we have never seen some of these things before in this department, but everything in life is about time. This time will still pass.”

On his part, a human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, described how he and other legal advocates tracked Shahru following his arrest.

In a report titled “Tracking down FCDA worker detained by FCT Minister Wike over land allocation scandal involving his children,” Sowore claimed that Shahru had been “unlawfully detained at the FCDA Police Post.”

He recounted visiting the station on Friday night with lawyers Rosemary Hamza, A.K. Musa, and another unnamed lawyer who had tried earlier to secure the civil servant’s release.

Another human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, strongly criticized the arrest and subsequent detention of Shahru.

He told newsmen “There was no evidence that Shahru was behind the leaked documents that implicated Wike’s children.”

He described the action as “outright witch-hunt,” adding:
“After they arrested him (Shahru), they ransacked his phone and there was no evidence linking him with the leaked document. And beyond that, we must ask what is really classified about information on AGIS. It is a public establishment and Nigerians have the right to know what is happening there.”

“Land allocation must be transparent and whistleblowers must expose infractions. Minister Wike should have come out and clear his name on the allegations instead of beating around the bush that his children are also Nigerians. The arrest of Shahru is illegal, we need more whistleblowers to sanitise the system.”

On Shahru’s current status, Adeyanju confirmed his release:
“He has been released after intense pressure. He is no longer in custody even though he has been issued a baseless query. Sowore was in the forefront of the struggle for the release of the innocent civil servant. We are all part of it. We would not abandon Shahru, we would stand for him and ensure that he is not victimised.”

Minister Nyesom Wike denied claims that he awarded land allocations to his children through JOAQ Farms and Estates Limited and Jordan, totaling 3,822 hectares allegedly worth $6.45 billion.

At the media parley, Wike responded: “Assuming, though not conceding, my children applied for land. Are they not citizens? Are they Ghanaians? Even if they applied, are they not entitled because I’m a minister?”

“First, calculate land in Maitama and Asokoro and tell me where you’d get 2000 hectares of land. And I know where it is coming from. It is from Adamawa State. I am aware,” he added.

He also challenged the evidence being circulated:
“The whole thing is rubbish. Where in Maitama and Asokoro can you find 2,000 hectares? Bring the documents, bring empirical evidence.”

Commissioner Ajao confirmed Shahru’s arrest and noted that the case is under investigation:
“The suspect would be charged to court.”

When contacted regarding the disciplinary query, Wike’s media aide, Mr. Olayinka, explained:
“Issuing query to civil servants for allegedly flouting the service rules is a normal procedure. He isn’t the first to be queried and he won’t be that last.”

Insecurity Will Persist Without Adherence To Rule Of Law – Kukah

Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese and founder of the Kukah Centre, has stated that Nigeria’s fight against insecurity will continue to be ineffective unless the country recommits to justice and the rule of law.

Speaking on Saturday in Jos, Plateau State, during the commissioning of the House of Justice office, Bishop Kukah emphasized the critical role justice plays in national security.

“It is essential for a country like ours to respect the rule of law. Failure to address injustice only leads to greater insecurity.”

“When mass atrocities occur, no one considers the long-lasting impacts on the victims and communities; our focus is often on the perpetrators. The rule of law must be upheld,” he said.

Kukah lamented the neglect of victims in areas like Benue, Plateau, and other states plagued by violence, arguing that institutional failure to ensure justice only worsens national insecurity.

He warned that merely having laws in place is not enough if they are not meaningfully enforced.

“Justice is not something that will be handed to you as a gift. Courts alone cannot deliver justice unless someone approaches them,” Kukah noted.

Encouraging citizens not to withdraw in frustration, he urged Nigerians to actively seek justice, even in the face of perceived systemic corruption.

The CEO of House of Justice, Gloria Mabeiam Esq., also spoke at the event, stressing that Nigeria is burdened by a mounting backlog of unaddressed grievances.

She described it as a significant “justice debt”, saying the country must confront these lingering issues if it is to move forward with fairness and accountability.

Presidency In Panic Over Growing Coalition Strength, Attacking Everyone – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Presidency of entering a “panic mood” following the rising influence of the newly formed opposition coalition.

The party claims the government’s recent policy announcements are politically motivated and not driven by concern for Nigerians.

In a statement released Sunday in Abuja, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, said the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration was reacting to the coalition’s momentum, not to the country’s pressing challenges.

According to Abdullahi, the sudden reformist stance of the government especially regarding food security, is a result of mounting political pressure, not genuine compassion.

Responding to a tweet by Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, who recently announced the government’s plan to remove bottlenecks hindering food availability and exports, the ADC spokesperson said:

“On Saturday, when Bayo Onanuga tweeted before the world that, moving forward, all bottlenecks hindering ‘the realization of the Tinubu administration’s potential’ would be removed to enable food sovereignty and export, he didn’t just issue a statement, he issued a confession.”

Abdullahi went on to say:

“A confession that this government had, by design, been sitting on its hands while Nigerians starved. Now, under mounting political pressure, they want applause for doing the bare minimum? This is not reform. This is not leadership. This is a scramble for survival by an administration that has been cornered by its own failures.”

The ADC claimed that, without the pressure created by the unveiling of the opposition coalition, the government would have continued its “calculated indifference” to the suffering of the Nigerian people.

“Let us make one thing clear, it took the emergence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the growing momentum of a united opposition to push this government into action.”

“It wasn’t the hunger of hundreds of millions of Nigerians that moved them, it was fear. Fear of the 2027 elections. Fear that Nigerians have woken up. Fear that, with a united opposition, 2027 will be a clear-cut election between the APC and the Nigerian people.”

Abdullahi also accused the government of deliberately weaponizing poverty, saying:

“After Bayo Onanuga’s statement that they would no longer delay in removing bottlenecks that had hindered food security, the only conclusion possible from that statement is that the government had deliberately sat on its hands and watched Nigerians starve in the last two years.”

He questioned the timing and motive behind the government’s proposed reforms:

“We must all begin to ask this government the obvious questions: If the bottlenecks that Onanuga alluded to in his press statement could have been removed earlier, why did they keep them in place while millions went hungry and businesses collapsed? Was it so they could stage a last-minute, propaganda-driven performance closer to the 2027 elections?”

Calling the move part of a calculated strategy, he said:

“This is a pattern. This is a strategy. This is not a government reacting to an urgent national crisis, it is a political machine managing optics. Every move they have made has been about political calculation ahead of 2027. Nigerians, shine your eyes.”

He further alleged that President Tinubu has already begun his re-election campaign, two years early, due to increasing public dissatisfaction.

“President Tinubu is already campaigning, two years early, because he knows he’s in trouble. He knows Nigerians have had enough. And the worst part?”

“He is risking the country’s future, all in the name of his re-election bid. Onanuga’s declaration is not about food security or economic diplomacy, this is about politics and 2027.”

The North Will Celebrate Me If I Am President – Peter Obi

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed confidence that the northern region of Nigeria would rejoice at his leadership if elected president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on the Sunday Politics programme, Obi, a key figure in the opposition coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), highlighted the untapped potential of northern Nigeria and pledged to tackle the insecurity that has held the region back.

He noted that despite the North’s considerable voter base and vast arable land, the region remains underdeveloped due to poor governance and persistent insecurity.

“The biggest asset of this country is in the north, the uncultivated lands in the north. The criminality we face in the north today, I will deal with it,” Obi assured.

Calling for a shift from identity politics to merit-based leadership, Obi said Nigerians must move beyond voting based on ethnic or religious affiliations.

“We have voted for incompetence, we’ve voted for tribe, (and) we’ve voted for religion; let’s vote for competence,” he stated.

Addressing northern voters directly, Obi appealed for their trust, assuring them of his commitment to addressing their challenges if elected.

“I want them to trust me… If I am president, the North will celebrate me. I have an idea of the problem,” he declared.

Domestic Dispute Turns Bloody As 22-Year-Old Stabs Elder Brother To Death

A tragic domestic incident has rocked the Idanre area of Ondo State, where a 22-year-old man, Gabriel Pius, has been taken into police custody for allegedly killing his elder brother, Abu Simon, during a heated disagreement.

The State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, confirmed the incident, stating that it was reported by a family acquaintance and quickly responded to by officers from the Idanre Division. The suspect was promptly arrested.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from this domestic altercation. Our detectives have moved swiftly to ensure justice will be served,” Lawal said.

According to him, “On 27th June 2025, at about 2000hrs, one Gabriel Michael reported the fatal stabbing of Abu Simon by his younger brother, Gabriel Pius, following a domestic disagreement.”

Following his arrest, Pius was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a more detailed investigation. Police authorities have confirmed that he will face prosecution once inquiries are complete.

In a related update, the Ondo State Police Command revealed multiple security successes achieved over the last two weeks, including the arrest of a notorious four-man armed robbery gang, along with several suspected cultists and fraudsters.

The commissioner said the robbery suspects had been terrorising residents of Akure, Owo, Ondo, and neighboring communities, engaging in violent crimes and vehicle theft.

They were tracked down and apprehended by the Command’s Tactical Intelligence and Response Squad (TIRS) following a recent robbery incident in Akure on June 27.

Two members of the gang were initially caught outside the state, and their arrest led to the capture of two more suspects, including a well-known dealer of stolen goods.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the syndicate is involved in a wider car-snatching and trafficking network,” Lawal disclosed.

Items recovered from the suspects included a stolen vehicle and multiple mobile phones.

The police say they are intensifying efforts to retrieve more stolen property and are in pursuit of other accomplices, including a suspected arms supplier who is currently on the run.

Don Jazzy Admits He Lacks Discipline To Be With One Woman

Renowned Nigerian music producer and Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, has openly stated that he does not believe he possesses the discipline required to remain in a monogamous relationship.

During a candid appearance on The Nancy Isime Show, Don Jazzy explained that his inability to commit to just one woman stems from a personal truth he prefers not to hide.

“I don’t believe that I am strong enough to be with [only] one person. I think. People will run away from me being truthful. I will not be dating you and telling you that you’re the only person,” he said.

The music executive acknowledged that some individuals are naturally inclined to remain faithful once they fall for someone. However, he admitted that he struggles with such commitment.

“Some people have the strength to be attracted to somebody [and no one else afterwards. But for me, the fact that you’re a beautiful lady doesn’t stop me from admiring another woman. She is also beautiful,” Don Jazzy added.

Despite knowing that his honesty might not sit well with everyone, he emphasized his preference for being upfront rather than making promises he cannot keep.

JUST IN: Peter Obi Declares For President In 2027, Rules Out Running Mate Speculation

Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and a key figure in the opposition, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Appearing on the Sunday Politics programme, Obi put to rest widespread speculations linking him to a possible vice-presidential role under former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” Obi stated unequivocally.

Reacting to the suggestion that he might team up with Atiku again in a running mate capacity, Obi dismissed the claims as unfounded speculation.

“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C,” he clarified.

The former governor of Anambra State reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, under which he ran in the 2023 election, while also acknowledging his involvement in the broader opposition alliance.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” he added, referring to his role within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.

The coalition aims to mount a strong challenge to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who is widely expected to seek re-election in 2027.

21 K!lled In Kano Road Crash As Bus Collides With Trailer

A fatal crash claimed 21 lives on Sunday morning along the Kano–Zaria highway in what has been described as one of the deadliest accidents in recent times.

The collision involved a Toyota Hummer Bus and a DAF trailer at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsalle, around 8:23 a.m.

Mohammed Bature, the Kano Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the incident and expressed grief over the tragic loss of life.

The accident involved 24 individuals, out of whom 21 perished, while three sustained injuries.

According to a statement from FRSC spokesperson Abdullahi Labaran, initial findings point to a violation of traffic regulations by the driver of the Toyota Hummer Bus, which caused a head-on collision with the trailer. The impact triggered a devastating fire.

“The crash was caused by route violation by the driver of the Toyota Hummer Bus, which led to a head-on collision with the trailer. The impact resulted in a fire outbreak,” the statement noted.

The Hummer Bus, bearing registration number KMC 171 YM, collided with the DAF trailer (GWL 422 ZE), resulting in both vehicles being engulfed in flames.

Rescue teams recovered the charred remains of 21 passengers, which have been deposited at the Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary.

The injured victims are currently receiving care at Garun Malam General Hospital.

FRSC personnel, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force and fire services, promptly responded to the emergency.

The crash site has been cleared, and traffic flow has resumed.

Sector Commander Bature conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

He emphasized the importance of obeying traffic regulations.

“The Corps remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and urges the public to remain vigilant and law-abiding on the highways,” the statement concluded.

He further cautioned motorists against reckless behaviors such as route violations, dangerous overtaking, and travelling at night—actions that frequently lead to catastrophic consequences.

2027: North Must Support Southern Candidate To Keep South’s Goodwill – Youth Leader

Rikwense Muri, President of the Southern Taraba Youth Coalition for Peace (STYCOP), has asserted that the North has little option but to back a Southern presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections if it intends to maintain political goodwill with the South.

This declaration follows speculations around former presidential candidate Peter Obi offering to serve a single term under a proposed coalition of opposition forces.

Muri, while commenting on the evolving alliances shaping ahead of the 2027 race, highlighted that political strategy is dictated by interest rather than sentiment or long-term loyalty.

“The North has no choice at the moment than to look for a Southern alternative to stand election against Tinubu,” he said.

“Politics is about interest, not trust. Political decisions are made for today, not necessarily for the future.”

Although final decisions will rest with various northern political power brokers, Muri suggested that the current political atmosphere favors greater collaboration between the North and South.

He also addressed concerns over internal disagreements within the opposition coalition, stressing that such differences are not insurmountable.

“Since the coalition is a team effort, any disagreement can be sorted out along the way,” he said.

Muri added that despite President Bola Tinubu’s incumbency, he already has supporters across the North, and the region is made up of diverse interest groups, which further opens up space for cross-regional cooperation.

“The North is made up of different interest groups. And as President Tinubu is currently in power, he already has allies across the North.”

Looking ahead to the next general election, Muri believes the political contest will transcend regional divides and instead focus on party ideologies and coalitions.

“The politics of 2027 is not going to be about North versus South, but APC versus the Coalition,” he concluded.
