Iran Holds State Funeral For Military, Nuclear Officials Killed In War With Israel

Iran conducted a state funeral on Saturday for approximately 60 individuals, including high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists killed during its recent 12-day conflict with Israel.

The ceremony took place at Tehran’s Enghelab (Revolution) Square and drew massive crowds of mourners, according to footage aired on state television.

Thousands dressed in black gathered to honor the dead, chanting slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” while holding aloft portraits of the deceased.

One particularly provocative banner read “Boom, boom, Tel Aviv,” referencing Iran’s retaliatory missile barrage against Israel.

The televised coverage also featured mock ballistic missiles displayed alongside caskets wrapped in Iranian flags, symbolizing the country’s wartime defiance.

President Masoud Pezeshkian and Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who appeared injured from the conflict, were in attendance.

However, Khamenei himself did not appear in person, opting instead to deliver a pre-recorded video speech on Thursday in which he declared “victory” in the war that concluded with a ceasefire earlier this week.

As the funeral procession wound through Tehran’s streets, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi posted a tribute to the fallen on Instagram, stating:

“Iranians gave blood, not land; gave their loved ones, not honour; they withstood a thousand-ton rain of bombs, but did not surrender.”

He emphasized that the concept of “surrender” simply does not exist in Iran’s vocabulary.

Among those buried was Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s armed forces chief of staff.

His wife and journalist daughter, who perished alongside him in an Israeli strike, were also interred.

Nuclear physicist Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi was laid to rest with his wife.

Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami, killed on the war’s opening day, is scheduled for burial on Sunday.

Of the 60 casualties, eight were women and children, underscoring the personal toll of the war.

The United States joined Israel in launching strikes on Iranian nuclear infrastructure last weekend. Both nations have since claimed victory.

Israel declared that it had “thwarted Iran’s nuclear project” and warned Tehran against any attempt to restore its nuclear facilities.

Despite this, Khamenei dismissed U.S. claims, stating they had accomplished “nothing significant.”

Former U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy with a Truth Social post on Friday in which he criticized Khamenei’s victory declaration:

“I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH, and he does not have to say, ‘THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP!’”
Trump claimed he had precise knowledge of Khamenei’s wartime location but opted not to authorize lethal force:

“I had known ‘EXACTLY where (Khamenei) was sheltered, and would not let Israel, or the U.S. Armed Forces… terminate his life.’”

He also revealed that he had been considering lifting certain sanctions against Iran, but reversed course after Khamenei’s remarks:

“Instead I get hit with a statement of anger, hatred, and disgust, and immediately dropped all work on sanction relief, and more.”

In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi issued a post on X (formerly Twitter), adopting Trump’s rhetorical style:

“If President Trump is genuine about wanting a deal, he should put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran’s Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Khamenei.”
He continued:

“The Great and Powerful Iranian People, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had NO CHOICE but to RUN to ‘Daddy’ to avoid being flattened by our Missiles, do not take kindly to Threats and Insults.”

The Iranian health ministry reported that Israeli strikes killed at least 627 civilians. By contrast, Israel said that Iranian missiles left 28 of its citizens dead.

Following the U.S attacks, Trump stated that new negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program would begin next week.

Iran, however, firmly denied this, and its parliament subsequently passed a law suspending cooperation with the UN’s nuclear oversight body, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Dantata To Be Buried In Saudi Arabia, Funeral Prayer Held In Kano

A funeral prayer in absentia (Salatul Ga’ib) was held on Saturday in Kano for late Nigerian business tycoon, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away in Dubai on Friday at the age of 94.

The solemn prayer session took place at the Umar Bin Khattab Mosque in the Kano metropolis and was led by Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, who chairs the Kano State Council of Ulamas, according to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Thousands gathered for the prayer, including dignitaries such as the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, to pay tribute to the late industrialist.

After the prayer, Sheikh Khalil explained the significance of the ritual, stating:

“Salatul Ga’ib is observed for Muslims who die outside their home country or in places where funeral rites cannot be performed.”

He went on to reflect on the character and contributions of the deceased:

He described the late Dantata as a devout Muslim, philanthropist, and community leader who lived a life of service and humility.

Aminu Dantata was a towering figure in Nigeria’s private sector, having expanded his family’s legacy into a wide-reaching business empire that included interests in construction, finance, manufacturing, agriculture, and oil and gas.

Known for his generosity, Dantata was deeply committed to philanthropy.

He supported numerous educational, medical, and religious institutions across Northern Nigeria through both his foundation and personal efforts.

According to NAN, “he is expected to be buried in Madina, Saudi Arabia, in accordance with family arrangements.”

23 Killed In Israeli Raids On Gaza, Civil Defence Reports

At least 23 people, including three children, were killed across the Gaza Strip on Saturday following Israeli airstrikes and ground raids, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency.

Civil defence spokesperson Mahmud Bassal confirmed the deaths, stating,

“At least 23 dead and dozens of wounded were taken to hospitals after Israeli firing and raids.”

Among the dead were three children killed when an airstrike hit a residential home in Jabalia, located in northern Gaza.

Video footage obtained by AFP from Gaza City showed grieving relatives mourning over the children’s bodies.

Bassal said the children were part of a group of 21 people killed in six separate airstrikes carried out by drones and warplanes across the territory.

Additionally, two other civilians reportedly died from Israeli fire while waiting for food aid in the Netzarim zone, located in central Gaza.

The Israeli military has not yet responded to requests for comment on the latest strikes.

Due to heavy restrictions on media access and movement within Gaza, international agencies like AFP are unable to independently verify the casualty figures or specific details provided by local officials and witnesses.

The conflict in Gaza escalated following Israel’s renewed focus on the region after concluding a brief but intense 12-day war with Iran, which ended in a ceasefire on June 24.

The Israeli military has since pledged to intensify operations in Gaza, where Palestinian militants are still holding Israeli hostages.

The broader conflict traces back to October 2023, when Hamas launched a deadly attack on Israel that left 1,219 people dead, mostly civilians, according to Israeli government figures cited by AFP.

In retaliation, Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza has so far resulted in the deaths of at least 56,412 people, also predominantly civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry, figures the United Nations deems credible.

Meanwhile, humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate, with rights groups warning of famine-like conditions and civilians frequently killed while queuing for aid.

Again, Ohanaeze Appeals To Tinubu For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the foremost Igbo socio-cultural organization, has once again urged the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, marking four years since his arrest.

In a statement released over the weekend in Enugu, Ezechi Chukwu, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, made a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu, asking him to exercise his constitutional authority and diplomatic influence to free Kanu.

According to the statement, the continued incarceration of the IPOB leader raises serious concerns about the credibility and moral standing of Nigeria’s justice system.

“The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system,” the statement read.

Ohanaeze emphasized that the circumstances of Kanu’s extradition from Kenya, widely considered illegal, further undermine the legitimacy of his trial.

“Since his process of extradition from Kenya is unlawful and the basis for his arraignment questionable, one wonders the rational for detaining Kanu for four years without justice,” Chukwu stated.

The organization also reminded the public and the authorities that June 2025 marks exactly four years since Kanu’s arrest in Kenya and his subsequent transfer to Nigeria, a case that has drawn both domestic and international attention.

Calling on the president to act in the spirit of national reconciliation, Ohanaeze appealed for a resolution rooted in equity, fairness, and inclusive justice.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo at this juncture therefore urges President Tinubu to deploy his constitutional powers and diplomatic instruments to release him, in the spirit of equity, fairness and inclusive justice,” the group said.

There’s A Problem In Our Party; Two Governors, More Senators May Leave PDP Soon – Saraki

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Reconciliation Committee and former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has issued a cautionary note that the party could still witness further defections, even as internal efforts to stabilize and reposition it continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Friday, Saraki acknowledged the turbulence within the PDP and hinted at more political shifts on the horizon.

“PDP would likely see one or two more defections, and we should prepare ourselves for that; there is a possibility,” he said.

“We haven’t seen the worst of the defections for PDP. We would probably see maybe one or two governors who will defect, and we might see some senators who will defect,” Saraki added.

Despite these looming challenges, he expressed optimism, arguing that the timing of the crisis presents a rare opportunity for the party to reorganize and emerge stronger.

“For some of us, this happening early in PDP is an advantage. We are lucky that this is not happening, let’s say, late 2026; we would not even have had time to recover and regroup,” he stated.

“We have just under two years to the election, and we are lucky to have that. I think, with a lot of commitment and understanding, it is not a lost cause.”

Saraki emphasized the PDP’s resilience, pointing to its long-standing presence in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“A party with over 26 years of history that has been around, the largest party, we will definitely have low times like this.”

He also highlighted the party’s enduring strength at the grassroots level, suggesting that local party structures remain largely unaffected by the national crisis.

“When you go round the country, the state chapters, the local government chapters, the party is still very strong in the grassroots. In some areas in the country, they are not even aware of what is happening at our level, in Abuja,” he said.

According to Saraki, the reactions from the grassroots have been reassuring and could serve as a foundation for rebuilding.

“The reactions we are seeing at the grassroots give us a lot of encouragement. But what we need to do is to get to the bottom and start to build.”

Looking ahead, he stressed the importance of transforming the PDP’s internal culture and preparing for the future.

“This is not just about resolving today’s issues. It’s about building for the future. The next convention must not be business as usual. We must bring in new, younger faces who represent the future of this party.”

He concluded with a warning on the broader implications of a weakened opposition, stating, “If PDP fails, Nigeria edges closer to a one-party state. And that would be a disaster for democracy.”

Kidnapped Anambra Community Leader K!lled Despite N15m Ransom Payment

Fear and outrage have gripped the Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State following the brutal killing of a respected traditional titleholder, popularly known as ‘High Chief Ozo na Nimo’.

The late elder statesman, who was a member of the Nimo Royal Cabinet, was abducted on June 19 while supervising activities at his piggery farm.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who were masked, stormed the farm unexpectedly, sending workers fleeing in panic and leaving only the chief behind.

“The masked assailants stormed the farmland where ‘high chief’ was supervising activities, throwing the place into confusion as workers fled for their lives, abandoning only him,” one eyewitness recounted.

“The gunmen seized the elderly man at gunpoint and whisked him away, shortly after which they contacted his family and demanded N15 million as ransom for his freedom,” the source added.

Tragically, despite the ransom being paid, the kidnappers killed the victim.

His body, marked with deep machete wounds to the head, was found dumped near the same farm from which he was taken.

“His lifeless body, bearing deep machete cuts on the head, was later found dumped on the same farmland where he was kidnapped. The murder has sent shockwaves through the community,” another source revealed.

Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation, cordoning off the area and vowing to track down those behind the crime.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, expressed condolences and provided additional details.

“Operatives of the Anambra State Police in the early hours of 23rd June 2025 recovered a lifeless body of an alleged kidnapped victim in Nimo,” Ikenga stated.

“The command has also stepped up efforts to arrest the suspects behind this heinous crime.

“The victim, who was later identified as Mr Ozor Augustine Chido, was allegedly abducted in the morning of 19th June 2025 at his piggery farm in Nimo.

“The operatives were still actively involved to rescue the victim but unfortunately, his lifeless body was discovered on 23rd June, 2025, near his farm in Nimo.

“Meanwhile, the body of the victim has been deposited at the morgue. The command sympathises with the victim’s family and the community and assures that it shall leave no stone unturned in unmasking the suspects behind the dastardly act.

“Further developments would be communicated, please,” he added.

How Midnight Pressure, ‘Kwankwaso Factor’ Forced Ganduje To Resign As APC Chairman

Former Kano State governor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has reportedly resigned from his position, a move sources say was less about health and more about high-level political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While Ganduje cited health reasons in his resignation letter tendered on Friday, insiders say his exit was the culmination of growing political pressure and strategic maneuvers within the ruling party.

According to sources who spoke with DAILY GAZETTE, Ganduje’s resignation was anything but voluntary.

Around 2:00 AM on Friday, a high-ranking security official allegedly visited his residence to collect his resignation letter, a visit that sent shockwaves through his political circle.

“It came out of nowhere,” one of Ganduje’s close associates revealed. “Even his inner circle was taken by surprise.”

Later that day, Ganduje was seen performing what appeared to be his final official duty as APC chairman, leading members of the National Working Committee (NWC) on a condolence visit to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago over recent floods and attacks in the state.

Key to Ganduje’s sudden exit is believed to be the anticipated return of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the APC.

The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and a key political figure in northern Nigeria is said to have laid down a firm condition for his return: Ganduje must go.

With talks intensifying between Kwankwaso and a coalition of opposition leaders led by Atiku Abubakar, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reportedly acted swiftly to eliminate the barrier preventing Kwankwaso’s homecoming — Ganduje’s leadership.

“Tinubu was informed that Kwankwaso was seriously considering the Atiku-led opposition alliance,” a source said. “That was a red line.”

Ganduje’s chairmanship, which began in 2023 following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, also faced internal resistance from North Central stakeholders.

Adamu, who hails from Nasarawa, was edged out after reportedly opposing Tinubu during the APC primaries.

Since then, voices from the North Central zone have consistently demanded that the party chairmanship be returned to their region.

With Ganduje coming from the North West, critics viewed his leadership as a continuation of regional imbalance.

Now, attention has turned to potential North Central replacements including:

Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura – ex-Nasarawa governor and CPC legacy figure,

Senator George Akume – current Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF),

Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (313) – Niger East senator and former chairmanship aspirant.

However, analysts say each contender may face complications due to APC governors already controlling their states, making them unlikely to yield state party machinery to new national figures.

Following Ganduje’s exit, Deputy National Chairman (North), Hon. Abubakar Kyari Dalori, is expected to step in as Acting National Chairman pending a formal decision at the APC national convention scheduled for November 2025.

Speaking to Daily Trust, APC National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, said:

“If the resignation is confirmed, the deputy chairman from the same region, in this case, Dalori will constitutionally assume leadership in acting capacity.”

An emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting is reportedly in the works to ratify the interim leadership and discuss broader party strategy.

Since its formation in 2013, the APC has seen a revolving door of national chairmen, most of whom left under controversial circumstances:

Bisi Akande (2013–2014)

John Odigie-Oyegun (2014–2018)

Adams Oshiomhole (2018–2020) – ousted by NEC over internal divisions

Mai Mala Buni (2020–2022) – led a prolonged caretaker committee

Abdullahi Adamu (2022–2023) – resigned amid post-election tension

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (2023–2025) – resigned under political pressure

The trend reflects ongoing internal power struggles, regional rivalries, and the challenges of managing a complex national coalition ahead of each election cycle.

Ganduje’s resignation is more than a personnel change, it signals the beginning of a major internal realignment within the APC as it prepares for a fiercely contested 2027 election.

As new alliances form and old rivalries resurface, the choice of the next party leader will be pivotal.

The visit aligns with the African Union’s Sixth Region framework, which formally recognizes the African diaspora as an integral partner in the continent’s growth.

Saint Lucia, like many Caribbean nations, shares deep ancestral and historical ties with Africa.

After wrapping up engagements in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu will travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit from July 6 to 7, 2025.

He will participate at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, marking Nigeria’s first attendance as a partner country, a designation higher than observer status but below full membership.

The summit will revolve around the theme:
“Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.”

Deliberations are expected to centre on:

Enhancing Global South unity,

Building resilient economies,

Fostering social and environmental development through BRICS-led initiatives.

Nigeria has lost one of its most iconic businessmen and philanthropists, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, who died at the age of 94.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Thursday by his longtime Personal Private Secretary (PPS), Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, who shared a heartfelt message:

“Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata.
