JUST IN: Enugu Labour Party Suffers Another Blow As Rep Member Dumps Party, Pitches Tent With APC

Prof. Paul Nnamchi, the lawmaker representing Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency, has officially left the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nnamchi announced his defection during Tuesday’s plenary session at the House of Representatives, attributing his move to unresolved leadership issues within the Labour Party.

According to the lawmaker, internal conflicts have continued to destabilize the party’s structure and hinder its operations.

“The leadership crisis has crippled the party’s ability to function effectively,” he told fellow lawmakers.

This marks the second high-profile defection from Labour Party ranks in Enugu State within a short span.

Just weeks ago, Barrister Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, who represents Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency, also joined the APC.

Tinubu Can’t Win 2027; He’d Be Lucky To Come Third – El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El‑Rufai says President Bola Tinubu stands no chance in the 2027 election, and would be “lucky to come third.”

Speaking on Arise News on Monday, El‑Rufai blamed a weak economy, rampant insecurity, and a lack of infrastructure for widespread public frustration with Tinubu’s government.

He said that “new polls show that many Nigerians have lost faith in the president,” adding that “Tinubu has no pathway to win the 2027 election and would be lucky to come third.”

According to El‑Rufai, approval ratings in some regions are staggering:

“In many parts of the country, particularly in the southeast and the North President Tinubu has a 91% disapproval rating.”

“Even in Lagos, he has a 78% disapproval rating.”

He continued: “In some states in the southwest, he’s doing better than a 78% disapproval rating, but there is no way he’s doing better than 50%, even in the southwest; the guy is gone.”

Highlighting the administration’s failings, El‑Rufai said “He has performed miserably. The economy has tanked. The security architecture has failed. There are no clear trade, industrial and investment policies. Everything is going wrong.”

He accused the government of collecting revenue without visible results.

“They are raising lots of revenues, but we don’t know where the revenues are going because there are no results.”

Reflecting on his shift in perspective, El‑Rufai noted that he once backed both Buhari and Tinubu and had expected Tinubu to do better.

“If you asked me in 2022 or 2023… that things will ever be this bad, I would… say that you are mentally ill.”

He cited alarming statistics:

“Over 2.2 million Nigerians were abducted. 615,000 were killed… worse than the eight years of Buhari in one year.”

“This is data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics. … So where has that 1.5 trillion gone? … Why is the security situation just getting worse? Why is the government asking communities to protect themselves?”

El‑Rufai also criticised what he called unconstitutional deductions:

“For that 100 billion that goes out every month from the Federation account… without appropriation by the National Assembly … So the entire deduction and spending expenditure is unconstitutional. It’s an impeachable offence…”

Although he’s still undecided about running for president in 2027, El‑Rufai stressed that “priority number one… is to get a person that will improve the quality of governance in Nigeria.”

“He wants a leader who can “defeat President Tinubu because President Tinubu is determined to make this election look as if it is settled.”

Regarding defections to the ruling party, he said:

“I have looked at the numbers. I’ve looked at the trends of elections. President Tinubu has no pathway to win. He cannot win. In fact, he will be lucky if he was third.”

On the matter of his own future, El‑Rufai stated:

“I have not made any decision about what position to run for. I’m thinking about it. … I don’t need to be in politics. I don’t need to be in public service to thrive. … For me, that person [leader] also should be able to defeat President Tinubu.”

2027: North-East APC Nominates Dogara As Tinubu’s Running Mate

The North-East Coalition of APC Support Groups has officially thrown its weight behind former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, recommending him as the ideal running mate for President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general election.

Dogara, a Christian from Bauchi State and a prominent advocate of a Muslim-Christian ticket, has been positioned by the coalition as a symbol of unity and inclusive governance.

Speaking at the end of a two-day meeting held in Gombe, the coalition’s chairman, Honourable Sha’abdini Bello, presented a communique on Monday outlining the group’s position.

“The coalition strongly recommended Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, as a suitable candidate for Vice President in the 2027 elections,” Bello declared.

He emphasized that the coalition’s endorsement was based on national interest, Dogara’s political experience, and his inclusive leadership style during his time in office.

“Dogara’s tenure in the 8th Assembly was marked by his inclusive leadership as evidenced by his appointments, which represented every state in the North-East and all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.”

“His proven track record as a unifying figure makes him a trusted and tested leader for the region and the nation,” he said.

Reaffirming their commitment to the party, the coalition also expressed strong support for President Tinubu and the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.

Members were urged to maintain unity, loyalty, and discipline, especially in light of what they described as the party’s current phase of “Renewed Hope and National Rebirth.”

In addition to the endorsement, the group urged the president to prioritize the Akwanga-Gombe Road project, describing it as a critical link between the North-East, Abuja, and other parts of the country.

The move comes amid increasing political speculation, particularly following a recent APC stakeholders meeting in the North-East.

Observers noted the absence of any mention of current Vice President Kassim Shettima in Ganduje’s remarks endorsing Tinubu for a second term, fueling reports that the president may be considering a new running mate.

Iran Strikes U.S Base In Qatar In Retaliation For Nuclear Attacks

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated sharply as Iran launched a missile attack on the U.S.-run Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, in direct response to U.S airstrikes on three of its nuclear facilities over the weekend.

The Qatari government confirmed the attack, condemning it as a “flagrant violation” of its sovereignty and international law.

Although no casualties have been reported, the strike marked a significant escalation in the rapidly unfolding regional conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

“We consider this a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar, its airspace, international law, and the United Nations charter,” said Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defense stated that all missiles were successfully intercepted, and that preemptive evacuation procedures had been carried out at the base prior to the attack.

The base, which houses thousands of U.S. and coalition personnel, remains on high alert.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement shortly after the strike, claiming it had no hostile intentions toward Qatar and that the operation was specifically targeted at the U.S military presence.

“While Iran shattered the U.S. air base in Qatar, the attack in no way presents any danger to Qatar or its people,” the statement read, adding that Iran “remains committed to maintaining and continuing its warm and historic relations” with the Gulf nation.

Iran also clarified that it used the same number of missiles as the U.S had bombs in its strike on Iranian nuclear sites, describing its response as proportionate.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reinforced the message with a warning:

“We will not leave any attack on our territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national security unanswered under any circumstances.”

In Washington, President Donald Trump convened a high-level Situation Room meeting with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, signaling the seriousness of the unfolding crisis.

Reporters described a flurry of activity at the White House, with uncertainty surrounding the President’s next steps.

“This was clearly a calculated and choreographed response by Iran, and the ball is now in President Trump’s court,” wrote BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner.

Though Trump has not made a public appearance, he is expected to comment either through official statements or via his Truth Social platform. He is also scheduled to travel to the Netherlands tomorrow for a NATO summit.

The Iranian strike on Al Udeid is not the only escalation.

State-run media in Tehran reported missile launches targeting U.S bases in both Qatar and Iraq, declaring the beginning of a “mighty and victorious” military response.

The airspace over Qatar was temporarily shut down in anticipation of the attacks, forcing airlines to reroute flights.

The U.S embassy in Doha and the U.K. Foreign Office have both issued warnings for citizens to shelter in place.

Neighboring Bahrain also reported air raid sirens and advised residents to seek immediate shelter, though the government did not confirm any direct attacks.

Israel, a key U.S. ally in the region, has also stepped up its military campaign, claiming responsibility for attacks on Iranian infrastructure, including Evin Prison and access routes to the Fordo nuclear facility.

Israeli officials maintain close coordination with Washington. Economy Minister Nir Barkat emphasized the unity between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:

“It is very clear that Trump and Netanyahu are totally aligned… many of the things said in the media were a decoy to surprise Iran.”

Mali Junta Chief Reinforces Ties With Putin Following ECOWAS Departure

Mali’s military ruler, General Assimi Goita, met with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, affirming his intention to “reinforce” cooperation with Russia, a key ally in Mali’s fight against jihadist insurgency.

Since seizing power through successive coups in 2020 and 2021, Goita has pivoted away from France and deepened Mali’s partnership with Moscow.

The visit, commencing Sunday and extending into the week, comes amid ongoing efforts by the junta to strengthen ties and secure external support.

“I am convinced this visit will be an occasion to reinforce our relations,” Goita told Putin during their meeting at the Kremlin.

The general emphasized Mali’s eagerness to broaden collaboration across multiple sectors, stating his goal to expand cooperation in “defence, transport, and the economy”.

President Putin reciprocated, expressing enthusiasm about the bilateral prospects:

“There are good prospects (for developing ties) in natural resources, energy, logistics,” he said.

During a symbolic wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall on June 23, Goita’s commitment to the partnership was prominently showcased.

Accompanying Goita were Mali’s defence minister Sadio Camara and their foreign minister; on the Russian side, top officials such as Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, Deputy Defence Minister Yunnus-bek Yevkurov, and Foreign Minister also attended.

In a parallel session, Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov held separate talks with Camara.

“The priority task of our partnership is to achieve practical results in enhancing security and sovereignty. This approach is the key to any success and victory,” Belousov remarked following their discussions.

Goita’s visit arrives in the wake of Mali’s formal withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) earlier this year, a move also made by Niger and Burkina Faso.

The departure has marked a strategic shift for the junta in regional alliances.

Notably, Russia’s Wagner Group, which had provided paramilitary support to Mali’s army since 2021, recently announced its withdrawal.

It will be succeeded by the Russian-backed Africa Corps, continuing Moscow’s military presence on the ground.

ENUGU: Chaos In Nsukka As Oriokpa Masquerades Assault Residents

Fresh outrage has erupted in Nsukka after the re-emergence of the infamous Oriokpa masquerades, who were seen attacking locals in a disturbing return to violence.

The group, whose activities were banned last year following a brutal assault on a nurse, have once again made headlines—this time for a series of violent acts captured on video over the weekend.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that the Oriokpa masquerades were suspended in May 2024 after they severely assaulted Miss Blessing Ogbonna, a nurse on her way to work.

Despite wearing her medical uniform and riding a motorbike, she was beaten until she fell and sustained injuries.

Public outrage over the incident led the Nsukka Town Union to impose a temporary ban on their activities.

That ban has since been lifted, and, exactly a year later, the masquerades are back, with disturbing reports suggesting that they have become even more violent.

Two separate videos, which went viral on Sunday, June 22, show Oriokpa masquerades terrorizing unsuspecting members of the public in Nsukka, a prominent university town in Enugu State.

In one of the clips, a man is seen being repeatedly flogged by a group of masquerades. Witnesses claim that the beating escalated after the victim refused to give them money, with one of the masquerades allegedly stabbing him during the assault.

The man reportedly lost consciousness as bystanders tried to revive him by pouring water over his body.

A second video shows a different victim being knocked to the ground by another masquerade, while frightened residents can be heard crying and shouting in the background.

The violent scenes have sparked an outpouring of anger across social media, with many calling on the Enugu State Government and local authorities to intervene urgently before the situation spirals further out of control.

Community leaders and human rights advocates are now demanding a permanent ban on the masquerade group, with some accusing them of hiding behind cultural traditions to carry out criminal acts.

So far, no official statement has been released by state authorities, but pressure continues to mount for swift and decisive action.

Putin Condemns Strikes On Iran, Offers No Support To Key Ally

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday strongly criticized the recent attacks on Iran, calling them “unprovoked” and “unjustified” during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow.

Despite the harsh words, Putin stopped short of pledging any direct support to Iran, a key regional ally.

While Moscow has long served as a critical partner for Tehran, it has taken a cautious approach amid escalating tensions, particularly following U.S airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

“This absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran is unjustified,” Putin declared in remarks broadcast at the beginning of his talks with Araghchi.

Although he refrained from directly naming the United States in his condemnation, Putin referred more generally to the “strikes” Iran has faced.

Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had offered a clearer statement, saying: “There has been a new escalation of tensions in the region, and, of course, we condemn this and express our deep regret in this regard.”

Peskov confirmed that the Kremlin viewed the U.S action as regrettable but emphasized that Russia is positioning itself as a possible intermediary.

“It all depends on what Iran needs. We have offered our mediation services,” he said, when asked whether Moscow planned to provide any concrete assistance to Iran.

During the meeting, Araghchi praised Moscow’s ties with Tehran, saying: “Iran is exercising legitimate defence against these aggressions,” and described Russia as a “partner and companion” to the Islamic Republic.

He also underscored the strength and history of the bilateral relationship, referring to it as “very close and longstanding.”

The regional crisis has intensified since Israel initiated a series of strikes on June 13, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile and drone attacks.

Despite its broad strategic agreement with Tehran, signed only months ago, Russia has not responded with any military backing.

The Kremlin has since clarified that the pact does not include mutual defence obligations.

Putin noted that Russia is “making efforts to help the Iranian people,” though he did not provide any specific details about what form that aid might take.

Asked if the U.S. strikes would influence Russia’s diplomatic stance toward Washington, Peskov stated the issues were separate: “They were different issues,” he said, indicating that the developments in Iran would not derail Moscow’s broader relationship with the U.S.

Though Putin has expressed interest in mediating between Iran and Israel, this suggestion was dismissed last week by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Trump Aide Hints At Regime Change In Iran If Nuclear Talks Fail

US President Donald Trump remains open to diplomacy with Tehran but suggests Iranians should consider toppling their own government if it refuses to return to nuclear negotiations, the White House said Monday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, speaking on Fox News, defended Trump’s stance following recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

She emphasized the president’s ongoing interest in peaceful engagement but pointed to Iran’s domestic repression as a justification for potential regime change if talks collapse.

“If the Iranian regime refuses to come to a peaceful diplomatic solution, which the president is still interested and engaging in, by the way, why shouldn’t the Iranian people take away the power of this incredibly violent regime that has been suppressing them for decades?” Leavitt asked.

Over the weekend, American bombers launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, joining Israel’s broader military operation to neutralize what it alleges is a clandestine weapons program.

The targeted facilities included Iran’s heavily fortified enrichment sites, long a source of international concern.

Trump’s messaging took a more provocative turn Sunday when he questioned long-standing US policy.

“Why wouldn’t there be a Regime change???” he wrote on social media, diverging from the official line that Washington is not pursuing the overthrow of Iran’s leadership.

Meanwhile, the White House hailed the air campaign as a success, with Trump celebrating the outcome online.

“Monumental Damage was done,” he posted, though no independent assessments have yet confirmed the extent of the destruction or how much it has impacted Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The West, led by the US and Israel, continues to accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian energy program, a charge Tehran has consistently rejected.

Recent satellite images released by Maxar Technologies depict the scale of damage inflicted on Iran’s Isfahan enrichment facility, comparing views from June 16 and after the June 22 strikes.

The contrast highlights the intensity of the operation, but Iran has yet to issue a full response or assessment of the situation.

Anambra Gov’ship: Soludo In Panic Mode As Stakeholders, Coalition Leaders Adopt ADC’s John Nwosu

Key figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and members of the Anambra Coalition Stakeholders Forum have officially endorsed Mr. John Nwosu as their consensus governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025 election.

Drawn from all 21 Local Government Areas and 326 electoral wards of Anambra State, the forum also threw its weight behind the broader coalition strategy being advanced by the ADC’s national leadership.

During a meeting held in Awka over the weekend, the stakeholders, led by ADC’s National Chairman, Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, deliberated on Nigeria’s current political landscape and the way forward.

They lauded the national leadership for initiating the coalition agenda, describing it as a timely response to the nation’s political challenges.

“Only such (a coalition) would galvanize all the incensed and restive sectors, zones and peoples,” the stakeholders declared in their resolution.

The forum, which ended in high spirits, expressed optimism over ADC’s role in leading what it called the “coalition compass” for Nigeria’s next political phase.

Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu emphasized the long-term commitment that laid the foundation for the party’s current role.

“What’s playing out now is a result of above twenty years of painstaking hard work and sleepless nights,” he said.

He also revealed that former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shown strong interest and support in building the emerging coalition, noting that Obasanjo considers the ADC a suitable vessel for a new political structure.

“Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed confidence and played invaluable legwork in anchoring the emerging political structure and for it to be rested in ADC, as a political party with a difference,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Nwosu said Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, also supports the coalition’s direction under ADC’s leadership.

“Just like the ex-President’s views, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was keen to see the coalition galvanized to fruition under ADC, which he said is what Nigeria needs now.”

Chief Nwosu further applauded Anambra stakeholders for their commitment, thanking them for their resilience and dedication to the coalition’s goals.

“I commend the Anambra Stakeholders for being alive to the Coalition dreams,” he said, adding, “thank you for your doggedness.”

ADC’s governorship flagbearer, John Nwosu, spoke confidently about his prospects in the coming poll, unveiling seven key campaign focus areas aimed at revitalizing governance in Anambra State.

To formalize the resolutions of the forum, former Speaker of the Anambra State Assembly, Barr. BenChuks Nwosu, was named Forum Chairman, while Prof. (Mrs.) Zelunjo Igweze was appointed Secretary. Both signed the final communique.

NRM Disowns Legal Action Against INEC, Distances Party From Edozie Njoku

Edozie Njoku (from the right)

The National Rescue Movement (NRM) has firmly disassociated itself from a contempt notice reportedly filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dismissing the claim as a baseless and misleading stunt.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Peter Letsuwa, the NRM described the alleged suit as a “huge joke”, clarifying that the party has no grievance with INEC and, therefore, no reason to initiate legal action against the electoral body.

Instead, the party expressed confidence in INEC’s leadership and actions, stating:

“We commend the commission for promoting internal party democracy and enforcing compliance with political party constitutions and the Electoral Act.”

While reaffirming its support for INEC, the NRM condemned what it called the disruptive behavior of Mr. Edozie Njoku, the ousted former chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

According to the NRM, Njoku was removed by a Supreme Court judgment in November 2024 over “forum shopping”, a term used to describe the practice of seeking favorable court jurisdictions to override legitimate leadership decisions.

The party said Njoku subsequently attempted to hijack the NRM by calling what he labeled an “emergency convention,” which the party said lacked legitimacy.

“According to the party’s spokesman, [the convention] lacked legitimacy and failed to comply with the party’s constitution, INEC regulations, or the Electoral Act.”

The statement emphasized that the NRM constitution provides clear guidelines on party leadership eligibility, particularly concerning membership duration.

“The National Rescue Movement Constitution is clear: even if Mr. Njoku registered as a member the same day he was removed by the Supreme Court, he is still not eligible for any leadership position, as party membership must span at least one year before assuming any office,” the statement read.

The NRM also dismissed Njoku’s authority to represent the party in any legal matter and warned against acts of political recklessness.

“Rejecting any suggestion that Njoku represents the party in any legal matter, the NRM warned against what it described as ‘lawlessness and impunity,’ asserting that Nigeria must not become a ‘banana republic.’”

The party’s statement went further, urging the Chief Justice of Nigeria to take action against what it sees as abuse of the judicial system by opportunistic political actors.

“We must all work to protect the judiciary from being dragged into political theatrics,” the statement added.
