Kidnapped Anambra NDLEA Director Regains Freedom

The Anambra State Director of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Daniel Onyishi, who was abducted on June 12, 2025, has regained his freedom, according to a statement released by the Anambra State Police Command.

Onyishi was kidnapped along Winner Road, Awka, after being trailed by unknown assailants.

He was released on Sunday, June 22, and is currently receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.

Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the development, though he did not state whether any ransom was paid.

He praised the collaborative rescue efforts that led to Onyishi’s release.

“The Anambra State Police Command on June 22, 2025, confirmed the release of the abducted NDLEA Anambra State Director, Mr. Daniel Onyishi,” Ikenga said in the statement.

He explained that the rescue was the result of combined efforts by the Police and other sister security agencies, particularly covert operatives of the NDLEA’s Zone 12 Command.

“It would be recalled that the victim was abducted in the early hours of June 12, 2025, along Winner Road, Awka. He is currently in safe custody and receiving medical attention,” Ikenga added.

“The Police, in collaboration with sister agencies, especially the high-powered covert operatives of the NDLEA led by Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, the Zone 12 Commander of the NDLEA, complemented the aggressive rescue efforts which helped the victim’s safe return.”

Ikenga also noted that the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has briefed the police high command and activated the directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Onyishi’s abduction had sparked concern and renewed public outcry for improved security, particularly regarding the rising incidents of kidnapping in Anambra State.

Enugu Farmer Cries Out Over Herdsmen Attacks, Demands Urgent Government Intervention

A commercial farmer in Enugu State, Ekene Uzodimma has raised the alarm over escalating violence allegedly perpetrated by armed Fulani herdsmen, calling on the government and security agencies to act decisively before the situation spirals further out of control.

The farmer in an interview with DAILY GAZETTE detailed a series of violent encounters and devastating losses suffered over the years on his farmland.

Uzodimma said repeated invasions, arson, and physical assaults that have left him and many others in the region reeling from trauma and financial ruin.

“I have lost everything more than once. Part of my 30-hectare rice farm was burnt down after harvest. My 4-hectare corn field was set ablaze. My rice fields have been grazed upon multiple times by herdsmen,” he said.

“Last year, I was physically attacked on my farm, and some of my workers sustained machete and stabbing injuries. We even arrested one of the attackers and handed him to the police, but nothing was done. No investigation. No accountability.”

Uzodinma’s plea comes on the heels of recent attacks in Benue State that left scores dead and thousands displaced.

“This is no longer about farmer-herder clashes. This is terrorism. And the silence from authorities is deafening,” he said.

“If farmers continue to be hunted and slaughtered, Nigeria will face a food security disaster of unimaginable proportions.”

The farmer outlined a series of urgent demands aimed at curbing the violence and restoring stability to rural communities. These include:

– Immediate deployment of armed security forces to high-risk farming areas in states like Enugu and Benue.

– Creation of a special investigative panel with prosecutorial powers to identify and prosecute attackers and their sponsors.

– Compensation and rehabilitation for victims and affected farming communities.

– Legal classification of the attacks as acts of terrorism, with corresponding penalties.

– Strict enforcement of anti-open grazing laws and stronger land protection policies.

Ekene Uzodinma appealed to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, and state governors to move beyond rhetoric and take meaningful action.

“We cannot continue to feed a nation while being butchered on our own land. If the government won’t protect us, who will? Enough is enough.”

Akpabio Hints At Possible Defection Of Fubara, Diri To APC Ahead Of 2027

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hinted that the political landscape in Nigeria’s South-South region could shift significantly ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the possible defection of two key Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a high-profile reception at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, Akpabio welcomed Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno into the APC following his recent defection from the PDP on June 6.

The event drew a strong APC presence, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and several governors and federal lawmakers.

Describing Eno’s defection as “symbolic,” Akpabio linked it to a larger trend of political realignment in the region.

“Today, Governor Otu is no longer an orphan. Thank you for being here to welcome your brothers, and you will welcome more brothers,” Akpabio said.

“Governor Sheriff of Delta, thank you for joining the progressives’ family and moving the South-South in the progressives’ direction. Governor Umo Eno, after you, who knows? Rivers State will tumble. After Rivers, Bayelsa will join.”

The Senate President also referred to the APC’s recent victory in Edo State’s Senate bye-election.

“Of course, we have won the election in Edo State. We produced our amiable senator, Monday Okpebholo,” he said.

Casting his gaze forward to the 2027 elections, Akpabio projected a united voting bloc in favour of the incumbent president.

“Come 2027, South-South will go one way; the South-South will vote for President Bola Tinubu,” he declared.

Currently, the APC governs four of the six South-South states, with Rivers and Bayelsa remaining under PDP leadership.

2027: South-East Leaders Back Coalition To Unseat Tinubu, Launch Mobilization Drive

As political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent South-East leaders have thrown their weight behind the Coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Operating under the banner of the South-East Renaissance Group (SRG), the leaders pledged full support for the opposition coalition and committed to a broad mobilization effort across the region.

The endorsement followed a high-level meeting held in Awka, Anambra State, chaired by former Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo.

Delegates from all five states in the South-East participated in the discussions.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and jointly signed by Prof. Nebo as Chairman and Prof. James Okoroma as Secretary, outlined the group’s concerns over the continued marginalization of the Igbo people in national governance.

It emphasized the urgent need for the region to align with other opposition groups to secure a democratic shift in 2027.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Nebo noted that the challenges facing the South-East went beyond political exclusion.

“The problems of the Igbos are beyond mere political pursuits and struggle for power,” he said, stressing the need for meaningful inclusion in national development.

He further called for deliberate efforts to ensure the region gains equitable access to economic opportunities, national appointments, and resource allocation.

Also speaking at the event, Chief Ralphs Okey Nwosu, National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), underscored the strategic value of the Coalition.

“The Coalition of Political Parties is the most effective means to change the current leadership in the country,” he said.

Chief Nwosu urged the South-East to fully participate in the alliance, emphasizing the importance of building an inclusive and representative political structure with other Nigerians.

The group resolved to evolve into a non-partisan platform focused on promoting the political and economic interests of the South-East within a united Nigerian federation.

The SRG’s declaration adds momentum to ongoing opposition strategies as the country prepares for what may be a pivotal election cycle in 2027.

Female Suicide Bomber Kills 20 In Borno Attack

A woman believed to be acting on behalf of the militant group Boko Haram detonated explosives strapped to her body late Friday in Konduga, a town in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, killing at least 20 people, according to local militia sources.

The blast targeted a popular hangout spot for vigilantes and local hunters who support the Nigerian military in its counter-insurgency efforts.

“We lost 20 people in the suicide attack which happened yesterday around 9:15 pm (2015 GMT) while our members were hanging out near the fish market,” said Tijjani Ahmed, leader of an anti-jihadist militia in Konduga district.

Police have confirmed 10 deaths so far, but acknowledged that the toll could rise.

Konduga lies approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

While suicide bombings have plagued surrounding areas for years, the town itself had experienced a period of relative calm over the past year.

“Eighteen people died on the spot, while 18 others were injured. Two more died in hospital, raising the death toll to 20,” Ahmed said, adding that 16 of the wounded were hospitalized, with 10 in serious condition in Maiduguri.

On Saturday, victims were buried in a mass funeral, with an AFP reporter witnessing the somber scene as corpses, some wrapped in white cloths and others in bamboo mats, were laid out on wooden platforms before burial.

The bomber reportedly disguised herself as a local heading to the fish market. Upon reaching the militia’s gathering spot, she triggered the explosion.

“She detonated her explosives as soon she reached the shed used by the militia fighters as a hangout,” said Ibrahim Liman, another militia member who confirmed the same casualty figures as Ahmed.

“I was in the market to buy fish for dinner when I heard a loud bang some metres behind me,” said local resident Ahmed Mallum.

“I was flung to the ground and I couldn’t stand. I just lay down.”

Borno State police spokesperson Nahum Daso reported that 10 bodies had been recovered, but stressed that “details are sketchy,” suggesting the final toll could be higher.

Konduga’s fish market, especially busy at night, has previously been targeted by suicide bombers.

The ongoing insurgency by Boko Haram has spanned 16 years, leaving more than 40,000 dead and displacing around two million people, according to the United Nations.

The violence has since spilled into neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional military coalition to combat the militant threat.

‘You Will Not Be Humiliated’ Upon Joining APC – Tinubu Assures Eno

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno that he will not face any humiliation following his defection from the PDP to the APC.

The assurance was conveyed through Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima during a grand reception at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, officially welcoming Governor Eno into the APC.

The event drew top party figures, including National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and no fewer than 24 APC governors from states like Cross River, Imo, Kwara, Lagos, and Delta.

“Mr. President asked me to assure you personally, no one will question your place here. The party is your home. You will not be humiliated. You will not be forsaken. We are your brothers and sisters in the high tide,” Shettima declared.

He emphasized unity:

“We are here today because we understand the fundamental truth that for any political party, the most enduring power does not come from division; it comes from unity of purpose. We’ll ride together, and we’ll rise together, and we’ll protect those who put us through fire and plot.”

Tinubu also promised to integrate Akwa Ibom into the national agenda:

“The President also promised to integrate Akwa Ibom State into the centre of national politics and development.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio welcomed Governor Eno, noting:

“What is happening is not just political movement, it is political maturity; not just a generational responsibility, but the language of statesmanship… You have placed the unity and progress of Akwa Ibom State above party lines.”

Akpabio also praised Tinubu’s leadership:

“Tinubu was a sincere and compassionate leader who would deliver on the expectations of the Akwa Ibom people regarding the realization of the Ibom Deep Seaport and other key infrastructural projects.”

National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje described Eno’s arrival as a move from political isolation to relevance, affirming:

“The movement of South-South governors into the APC was a signal that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies were inclusive and worth aligning with.”

Troops Uncover Detention Cells, Human Skull In Taraba Bandit Stronghold

Troops from the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 – Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have unearthed a chilling bandit hideout in southern Taraba, complete with makeshift detention cells and a shrine containing a human skull.

The discovery occurred during a two-day clearance operation in Wukari and Takum Local Government Areas conducted between June 19 and 20.

Acting on intelligence, the troops advanced into Mande Atsager in Takum, believed to be a stronghold of notorious bandit leader Verior John Gata.

The assault led to a brief firefight, after which the criminals fled into surrounding forests. The building was subsequently destroyed to prevent its reuse.

“The hideout, located in Mande Atsager in Takum Council… was destroyed after troops came under fire and overpowered the criminals, who fled into the surrounding forest,” said Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Army PRO for the Brigade.

The abandoned structure contained four in-built detention cells, allegedly used to confine kidnapped victims, and a shrine with a human skull, signaling involvement in occult criminal practices.

Prior to that, troops had advanced from Chonku along the High Tension route towards Gor Road in Wukari LGA, sweeping through villages including Lortema, Gudu, Mbayenge, and Teyotima.

There, they searched the home of a known criminal’s mother—but made no arrests there.

The operation continued in Ikayior village, where another suspected bandit camp was dismantled and an AK-47 magazine with 14 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition was recovered.

On the following day, troops carried out further clearance in parts of Takum LGA, covering Chanchangi, Jam Kaanan, Hingir, Ukum, and Nbaume, before reaching the Mande Atsager hideout.

“During the search of the abandoned hideout in Mande Atsager, troops found the detention cells and the occult shrine,” the statement added.

The site was completely razed to prevent reuse by criminal elements.

Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade, commended the troops for their professionalism and effectiveness.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s resolve to dismantle criminal networks and restore peace in Taraba State, urging community cooperation in sharing intelligence.

BREAKING: US Launches Coordinated Strikes On Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

A young boy walks through the debris at the site of an Iranian missile strike in Bnei Brak, east of Tel Aviv, on June 16, 2025. Iran unleashed a barrage of missile strikes on Israeli cities early on June 16, after Israel struck military targets deep inside Iran, with both sides threatening further devastation. (Photo by JOHN WESSELS / AFP)

US forces have carried out “very successful” strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear installations in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, according to senior US officials.

A stern warning accompanied the announcement:

“Remember, there are many targets left,” the official said, cautioning against any attempts at retaliation.

In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister denounced the strikes on what he referred to as Iran’s “peaceful nuclear installations,” calling the attacks “outrageous” and warning of “everlasting consequences.”

This statement comes as Iran launched a missile assault on central and northern Israel, injuring at least 23 people.

Israel’s main airlines, El Al, Israir, Arkia, and Israel Airlines, have suspended flights until further notice, citing escalating missile threats. El Al extended cancellations through June 27, and many other carriers are avoiding Middle Eastern airspace, as confirmed by FlightRadar24.

The US strike has sparked worldwide concern. According to Professor Mehran Kamrava of Georgetown University in Qatar:

“Many in Iran believe that Israel’s end game… is to turn Iran into Libya, into Iraq… the dismemberment of Iran is what Netanyahu has in mind.”

At the same time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as a “gross and unprecedented violation” of international law and insisted that Iran will defend itself:

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its right to stand with all its might against US military aggression…”

Experts are raising alarm over how this might escalate. Adam Weinstein of the Quincy Institute warned that it risks dragging the US into a broader war:

“This is how the escalation cycle starts… It will be very difficult for countries that risk ending up in the crosshairs…”

Similarly, Trita Parsi, also of Quincy Institute, cautioned that the attack could drive Iran to develop a nuclear weapon within five to ten years, warning that:

“We have to keep in mind… two nuclear‑equipped countries attacked a non-nuclear weapons state without having been attacked first.”
