Court Rejects EFCC’s Request Over Diezani Property, Slams Agency For Disobedience

The Federal High Court in Abuja has declined to hear a motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding one of the properties it seized from former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, due to the Commission’s failure to comply with an earlier court order.

Presiding over the matter, Justice Musa Liman criticized the EFCC for defying the court’s May 16 order, which instructed the agency to vacate House 6, Aso Drive, Asokoro, Abuja, and allow the property’s occupant, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, access to it. Instead of obeying the directive, the EFCC returned to court seeking a stay of the order pending an appeal.

Justice Liman described the EFCC’s action as disrespectful and warned that the court would not entertain further applications from the agency until it complies with the existing order.

“The law is no respecter of any person. If order of the court can be treated with disdain by an agency of the government, then there will be nothing left, but for persons to take law into their own hands,” the judge said.

He emphasized that allowing such disobedience threatens the foundation of the rule of law.

“Disobedience to a court order is injurious to the rule of law and can lead to anarchy. Where a party has refused to obey court order, the court cannot exercise discretion in favour of such a party.

“Therefore, this court will deny the applicant (EFCC) further audience till it purge itself of the contempt,” he added.

The May 16 ruling remains valid, ensuring that High Chief Emenike is entitled to remain in the property.

In addition to rejecting EFCC’s request for a stay of execution, the court granted an application for substituted service of court papers on EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede and agency counsel Francis Usani in an ongoing contempt case.

The contempt motion, filed by Emenike’s lawyer Obi Nwakor, seeks to hold both men accountable for obstructing the enforcement of the court’s order.

In the motion, Nwakor urged the court:

“to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the EFCC Chairman and a lawyer that represented the agency in the case, Usani, for brazen and grievous acts of contempt of resisting and obstructing the Sheriffs of this court from the execution of orders of this honourable court in this suit, made on the 16th day of May 2025.”

The court was also asked to authorize the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest and detain the two EFCC officials.

“The court is also urged to issue an order of the court, directing the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take the duo into custody with immediate effect for the purpose of bringing them before the court to show cause why they should not be committed to prison for brazen and grievous contempt of court.”

According to court filings, the EFCC obtained a final forfeiture order over the property in October 2023 and subsequently listed it for sale.

However, Emenike, the legal occupant at the time, obtained a ruling from a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, granting him the right of first refusal.

Despite that ruling, the EFCC allegedly disregarded the directive and forcefully evicted Emenike, claiming the property was now to be used as the residence for the Commission’s Chairman.

The case has been adjourned to allow time for proper service of the contempt proceedings and for the EFCC to comply with the court’s directive.

High Court Judge Kidnapped

The Bayelsa State Police Command has pledged to safely recover Justice E.G. Umokoro, a judge of the State High Court, who was kidnapped by gunmen believed to have disguised themselves in police uniforms.

The judge was abducted on Saturday evening near the Ekeki Motor Park in Yenagoa, where the attackers fired multiple shots to create panic before whisking him away to an unknown location.

In an official statement released on Sunday through the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Commissioner of Police (CP) Francis Alonyenu reassured the public that security agencies are actively collaborating to track and rescue the judge.

Dismissing rumours that the kidnappers were genuine police officers, the CP clarified that the assailants were impostors.

Alonyenu said Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa had directed all security agencies to intensify their efforts in locating the judge and bringing the culprits to justice.

“The Bayelsa Police Command is fussing efforts with other security agencies and reviewing video clips related to the event with different digital footage,” he said.

According to him, law enforcement teams are utilizing advanced tools and detailed intelligence for crime mapping to support the ongoing rescue operations.

“We have well-formatted crime mapping sketches aiding ongoing law enforcement efforts being mustered in the rescue efforts,” he added.

The Commissioner emphasized that this unfortunate event should not erode public confidence in the state’s security personnel.

“Guarantees are herewith given that this singular incident should not orchestrate any mistrust between the Bayelsa Public and security forces within the state.

“The support of Sen. Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State and the good people of the state, have enhanced our capacity and determination to ensure that the Justice is rescued unhurt,” he stated.

He further noted that the police command has heightened security operations and reinforced its law enforcement strategies to resolve the situation swiftly.

“At this point, it is also essential to appeal to members of the public to desist from any attempt to obstruct or hinder ongoing measures put in place for the rescue of the Hon. Justice.

“We call on your support and understanding in this regard, please,” he concluded.

“Recall that even when we expressed a huge growth projection, we immediately added that we were going to also eradicate poverty, which means that we are always interested in our common humanity.”

“We know that as a people, we are only as good as our weakest link.
So, we cannot leave the vulnerable in our society out or behind. What we have pledged is an inclusive prosperity, inclusive economic growth and that growth and prosperity should be measured on how we treat those very vulnerable ones in our society.”

“That is why I am so excited that we have the sort of resources, a pool of people with great reputation, experience, and work ethics to serve on this Board.”

He further assured that his administration would provide all necessary resources to enable the Board to effectively manage the social homes.

“We are committed to making sure that we provide you with all the tools and funds you require to ensure that our people in these social homes live in comfort and dignity,” he emphasized.

Also addressing the Board, the First Lady urged members to begin work immediately and conduct their duties with integrity.

“I urge you all to be diligent, fair and transparent in discharging your duties. Discharge those duties in compliance with the law and take good care of our children,” she stated.

In a related development, Governor Mbah granted clemency to eleven inmates of correctional facilities in Enugu State.

This clemency move is aimed at reducing congestion in prisons while offering the beneficiaries a chance to reintegrate positively into society.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh, conveyed the names of the beneficiaries to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh.

The beneficiaries include Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi Onu, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia, Ngene Oluebube, Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor, and Uzoma Nnaoche.

The Governor exercised his prerogative of mercy powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), following consultations with the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The decision was based on reports highlighting proven character reform, ability to reintegrate into society, possession or acquisition of productive skills, and recommendations from both the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Advisory Council, chaired by the State Attorney-General.

The Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy also includes members from the Nigerian Correctional Service, Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organisation (CAPIO), and the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), among other respected justice sector bodies.

Rivers CP Summons LG Officials Over Assault On Ahoada East Administrator

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has summoned key officials in connection with the violent assault on Goodluck Iheanachor, the Administrator of Ahoada East Local Government Area.

The officials summoned include the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and Chief of Staff to the LG Administrator, following reports that they led the attack on Iheanachor.

The incident, which occurred on June 20, followed the circulation of a purported resignation letter allegedly signed by Iheanachor on social media.

Not long after, a video surfaced showing him surrounded by unidentified individuals, being physically assaulted and seemingly coerced into signing a document.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Rivers State Police Command condemned the attack, attributing it to a group of hoodlums reportedly led by officials working under the LG Administrator.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko explained the circumstances of the assault in the statement titled “Conspiracy/Violent Attack/Assault Occasioning Harm and Stealing: A Condemnable Act.”

“The Rivers State Police Command is aware and deeply disturbed by the heinous attack on the Administrator of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Hon. Goodluck Iheanachor,” the statement read.

“On 20th June 2025, at about 13:40hrs, a group of hoodlums numbering about thirty, led by Mr. Hector Ekakita, the Chief Security Officer and the Chief of Staff to the Administrator, respectively, stormed the council secretariat and attacked him. During the attack, the hoodlums assaulted the Sole Administrator, stole his mobile phones, forced him to sign a letter purporting his resignation, and carted away vital official and personal documents from his office.”

According to the police, Iheanachor sustained injuries during the attack and was hospitalised, though he is currently in stable condition and receiving medical attention.

“The Administrator is currently undergoing medical treatment due to the injuries sustained during the violent attack. He is in stable condition. The Rivers State Police Command unequivocally condemns this reprehensible act and has taken swift action.”

Commissioner Adepoju, who visited the scene of the incident along with leaders of sister security agencies, has directed the CSO, the Chief of Staff, and all others implicated to report to the State Police Headquarters on Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, for questioning.

“The CP further noted that the Command is resolute in its pursuit of justice and warned that failure to comply with this invitation will attract severe consequences,” the statement added.

The Commissioner also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.

Iringe-Koko urged the public to stay calm and cooperate with the police.

“Residents of the state are encouraged to remain calm, law-abiding, and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order,” she said.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that Iheanachor was one of the administrators appointed to oversee the 23 LGAs in Rivers State by the State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), shortly after taking office.

This development comes in the context of an ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, following a state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara after a series of attacks on oil facilities.

EFCC Arrests Governor Alia’s Aide Over Alleged Sexual Exploitation, Cyberbullying

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of Dr. Mkor Aondona, Special Adviser to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia on Documentation, Research, and Planning.

The EFCC Spokesman, Mr. Dele Oyewale, disclosed the development to journalists in Makurdi on Saturday.

He stated that Aondona was apprehended on Friday by operatives of the Commission’s Makurdi Zonal Directorate over allegations of sexual exploitation and cyberbullying.

According to Oyewale, several female students had lodged petitions against the aide, accusing him of various acts of unethical and criminal behaviour, including sexual exploitation, blackmail, and cyberbullying.

“The petitioners alleged that Aondona was routinely recruiting slim and attractive girls for ushering jobs and insisted on sexual favours as a condition for selection,” Oyewale explained.

He said the alleged pattern of abuse extended far beyond the recruitment process.

“Based on this, they became vulnerable to having sexual affairs with him but unknown to them, he had videos of every sexual act without their consent and was always threatening to leak the videos if they refused to continue having sex with him.”

The EFCC spokesman further revealed that the suspect was involved in distributing explicit materials.

“Aondona was also alleged to be involved in blackmail—sending explicit videos of the girls allegedly recorded without their knowledge or consent through several messaging platforms. Some of the videos are said to be in circulation,” he added.

Oyewale concluded by noting that the Commission is finalizing its investigation, and the suspect will soon be charged to court.

JAMB Sets Date For 2025 UTME Mop-Up Exam

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially scheduled Saturday, June 28, 2025, for the mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

A total of 96,838 candidates will take part in the exercise, which aims to accommodate various categories of eligible test-takers who were unable to sit for the exam during the main and rescheduled sessions.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communications Advisor, the Board urged all eligible candidates to print their examination notification slips starting from Monday, June 23, 2025.

Dr. Benjamin clarified that the mop-up is meant to give a fair opportunity to a number of candidates affected by technical or biometric verification issues.

“The examination will accommodate the 5,096 spill-over candidates and those who failed biometric verification during the main exercise,” he said.

Additionally, candidates who missed one or both of the earlier sittings due to exceptional circumstances are also being offered a second chance.

“Due to special dispensation granted to absentee candidates of the main and resit examinations, 91,742 candidates who were absent in both or either of the main and resit examinations would also be given this opportunity, which is only for 2025 UTME,” Benjamin added.

According to JAMB, the mop-up will be conducted in 183 centres across the country, with the first session starting promptly at 8:00 AM.

“Candidates for the 8:00am session are therefore advised in their own interest to arrive on or one and half hour before the actual commencement of the examination at 8:00am,” he advised.

JAMB emphasized that beyond accommodating affected candidates, the mop-up exam is also part of an ongoing crackdown on impersonation and examination fraud, including identifying undergraduate students who unlawfully sit for UTME on behalf of others.

“The scheduled mop up examination provides the opportunity to further apprehend more impersonators particularly current undergraduate students who impersonate UTME candidates.”

“Institutions of apprehended undergraduates are already being notified of the gross misconduct of their students in order to invoke the violation of the matriculation oath already taken by the students to flush them out of the various tertiary institutions,” he stated.

Dr. Benjamin further noted that offenders would be prosecuted under the Examination Malpractice Act, 1999, regardless of age.

“In addition to their prosecution under the examination malpractice Act, 1999, which makes provisions for imprisonment even of the under-aged and their indulgent parents, special squads of invigilators/security personnel are being deployed in the continuation of the current war already declared by the Hon. Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON on examination malpractices and their perpetrators both high and low,” he said.

He also revealed that the Board had taken disciplinary actions against erring Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres and compromised exam locations.

“In addition to centres being delisted for technical deficiencies during the mock, UTME and resit examinations, a large number of CBT centres implicated for sharp practices in the on-going security investigation are being suspended and those found culpable would be delisted and reported for prosecution,” he explained.

“Consequently, 113 CBT centres have been delisted or suspended from across the country. Some other implicated in multiple infractions in the main or resit examinations exercise.”

Due to these sanctions, some towns have been deemed unfit to host mop-up exams. Affected candidates will be reassigned.

“As a result of the investigation, a number of examination towns are no longer eligible to be used for the mop up examinations. Few candidates who fall into the deactivated examination towns would be assigned to examination towns closest to the delisted towns. We seek the understanding of such candidates,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, JAMB extended its appreciation to security operatives for their dedication in clamping down on examination malpractice networks.

“The Board appreciated the security agencies particularly the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their ‘extra-ordinary’ devotion, passion and tenacity in the on-going nation-wide special investigation of identity theft and examination malpractices syndicates,” he noted, adding that arrests have included professional impersonators, tutorial centre operators, and even some JAMB officials.

How Tinubu Backed June 12 Annulment – Former Governor Lamido

Former governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of supporting the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, won by the late Moshood Abiola.

Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Lamido claimed that Tinubu and his late mother, Hajia Abibatu Mogaji, played supportive roles in Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida’s controversial annulment of the election results.

“I feel highly entertained by Tinubu’s rhetoric, the way he’s dramatising his role in Nigeria’s democracy,” Lamido said, casting doubt on the narrative often credited to Tinubu as a pro-democracy icon.

According to Lamido, Tinubu’s prominence in politics only grew after General Sani Abacha seized power, suggesting that his early political affiliations and actions contradicted the ideals of the democratic movement.

“Tinubu became relevant and noticeable after Abacha took over the government; before then, he was in the Senate while he was the secretary of the party,” Lamido explained.

He further alleged that Tinubu had been complicit in the annulment process.

“He was part of those who supported IBB’s annulment of the June 12 election,” he stated.

Lamido also leveled criticisms at Tinubu’s mother, claiming she mobilized support for Babangida from Lagos to Abuja at the height of the political crisis.

“His own mother Hajia Mogaji was organising Lagos market women to come to Abuja to pledge support for Babangida,” Lamido said.

In a controversial take on NADECO (the National Democratic Coalition), which has long been seen as a symbol of resistance against military rule and a platform for June 12 advocacy, Lamido challenged its true purpose.

“NADECO was postulated to fight Abacha not for June 12,” he declared.

The annulled June 12, 1993 election is widely considered the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, with Moshood Abiola believed to have won by a significant margin before the results were nullified by the military regime under Babangida.

PDP Insists On June 30 NEC Meeting, Rejects INEC Interference

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its decision to hold the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 30, declaring that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has no legal authority to stop it.

At a press conference in Abuja on Sunday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the intervention of INEC’s Acting Secretary, Halilu Aminu, questioning his motives and authority.

“INEC has no role in the regular meetings of the NWC or NEC,” Ologunagba stated.

“These are internal party matters, as clearly established by the Supreme Court in numerous rulings. INEC cannot cancel our meetings. It is the party’s prerogative to decide such matters. INEC has no authority to do so.”

Ologunagba emphasized that the PDP never designated the meeting as one to elect officers, hold primaries, or nominate candidates.

“We did not state that the meeting was for electing officers, conducting primaries, or nominating candidates for elective positions,” he added.

“Yet, the Acting Secretary of INEC, Halilu Aminu, decided to unilaterally assign a purpose to our meeting.”

The PDP has been embroiled in internal leadership disputes, particularly over the National Secretary position.

The conflict between Sunday Udeh-Okoye and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has caused significant delays to NEC meetings.

In a bid to stabilize the situation, the party appointed Setonji Koshoedo as Acting National Secretary.

However, a fact-finding committee led by Taraba State Governor, Kefas Agbu, reported that INEC recognizes Anyanwu as the substantive secretary.

This prompted INEC to reject the party’s May 30 notification for the upcoming NEC meeting, insisting that the letter must be co-signed by both the National Chairman and National Secretary, per its rules.

Ologunagba pushed back firmly on this position, citing Nigerian law and the PDP constitution:

“Now, whoever signs the letter is an interrupter of the party. If the court does not have jurisdiction over what happened with the internal affairs of the party, I wonder why INEC will have jurisdiction over it.”

“Because that is not the job of INEC. If we designate somebody to be the person to sign the letter, so be it. And that’s why it’s an internal affair of the party.”

He also raised broader concerns about the independence of INEC and its apparent interference in party affairs:

“Why the desperation to kill political parties? All they want is a party state, to stifle opposition. Which is just, like I have said earlier here, it’s wishful thinking, it’s hallucination.”

“And INEC should know that this is a hallucination. This country will not go into a one-party state and nobody, no matter how powerful, whether you’re a president or you’re a combination of presidents, it will not work.”

According to Ologunagba, the 100th NEC meeting will focus on preparations for the party’s national convention, including updates from the Zoning and Convention Committees formed during the 99th NEC meeting.

“At the 99th NEC meeting, it was unanimously agreed to schedule the next meeting for the 30th of June.”

“The constitution of the Zoning Committee and the Convention Committee was approved. Consultations with various organs of the party and stakeholders are ongoing,” he explained.

Addressing INEC’s rejection letter, Ologunagba reiterated that the party followed due process:

“For the record, there have been several times we have issued notices of 21 days’ notice for congresses or other meetings that require those things to INEC and we have had calls at some point to even shift those dates. So how did this acting secretary decide on his own to create and become a member of a political party and create for us an agenda that was not conveyed in the letter of the Acting National Chairman?”

He concluded with a warning about the broader implications of INEC’s actions:

“The challenge for us now as a party is to say, who is the acting secretary of INEC working for? What is the objective? Why is he creating an agenda for our party for a regular statutory meeting that is routine?”

“INEC has global partners, organisations that are interested in the body and support its independence, technical capacity, and credibility in the electoral process,” Ologunagba said.

“INEC’s actions could undermine democracy and erode international confidence in its capacity to deliver credible elections.”
