Killing: Bishops Oppose Call For Emergency Rule In Benue

Governor Alia

The Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, has firmly rejected suggestions by some clerics for the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, citing the need for unity and continued support for Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Speaking on Saturday in Makurdi, the State Overseer of the conference, Archbishop Alexander Nyoonkyegh, emphasized that Alia remains a trusted figure in the church and deserves both protection and encouragement from spiritual leaders.

Gov. Alia, described as “our brother in the vineyard,” was lauded by Nyoonkyegh who insisted that political stability and development, not emergency measures, are what Benue requires.

“What we need now in Benue is unity and support for the governor to succeed. Let us help him to succeed because he is heading in the right direction,” he said.

The call for emergency rule, previously raised by some bishops over worsening insecurity, was dismissed by Nyoonkyegh as unnecessary and potentially counterproductive.

“We cannot continue to talk about military takeover or emergency rule in Benue. We are not even sure that a Benue son will be appointed as the sole administrator. Look at what happened in Rivers. A sole administrator was appointed for Rivers who is from another state,” he warned.

Citing scriptural backing, the archbishop reminded fellow clerics that political leadership is ordained by divine will.

“Even the Bible has admonished us to be submissive to authorities, adding that only God gives authority to people,” he said.

He continued with a heartfelt plea for unity:

“As fathers of faith, when you have a son and brother in the vineyard and they are doing well, you say, brother, keep it up. Recently we were here crying on the issue of insecurity, and there were reasons to support our cries.

“Fr Alia is our brother in the vineyard, and we will continue to pray for him to succeed. What we know is that there is no authority that is not given from God.

“And the Bible says we must be submissive to the authorities. Yes, we are prophets, but we are submissive to the authorities here on earth too.

“What we need here is development, and the governor is developing the state, so what else can we ask for?

“Apart from issues of insecurity, which he is trying, and we are seeing some of his efforts, what fundamental offence has he committed?”

Archbishop Nyoonkyegh also praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for standing by the people of Benue.

He highlighted the recent directive from the President asking the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, to relocate to Benue State in response to the rising insecurity.

“We cried with faith in God, and he is hearing our prayers, and we believe that this mystery that we have witnessed in the last few days since the arrival of the Chief of Army should continue.

“Since his arrival, we have not heard of any further attack on our people. Let the peace be maintained.”

Obi Laments Five-Year Unpaid Salaries Of UNIZIK Staff, Seeks Urgent FG Action

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the continued neglect of teaching and non-teaching staff at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, who have gone without salaries for five years.

Obi made his position known after meeting with the affected workers, who shared their painful experiences of hardship, exclusion, and suffering.

The employees, hired between 2019 and 2020, reportedly hold valid appointments but have been left out of the federal government’s Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

This exclusion has made it impossible for them to receive their lawful earnings.

Describing the situation, Obi said, “They have written petitions and appealed to various bodies, both within and outside Nigeria, yet the situation remains unchanged.”

He emphasized that the issue went beyond a case of delayed payments, stressing it as a complete denial of their right to be part of the national payroll.

Obi further highlighted the consequences of the prolonged salary denial, which he said have been devastating for the workers.

He shared some of the heartbreaking accounts told to him by the staff, including eviction notices, broken families, untreated health conditions, and even the death of some employees who were unable to access basic healthcare.

“This is not just a labour issue; it is a moral and humanitarian one. A nation that neglects its educators and university staff undermines its own future. Their dignity, like that of every Nigerian worker, must be protected,” Obi said.

He urged the federal government to act swiftly by enrolling the affected workers into the IPPIS and immediately settling all their outstanding salary arrears.

Obi added that the incident at UNIZIK reflects broader concerns within Nigeria’s public university system, where academic and non-academic personnel continue to face salary delays, inadequate funding, and substandard working conditions.

‘Your Melody Lives Forever’: Brain Jotter, Tinubu, Obi, Others Pay Tribute To Late Highlife Icon Mike Ejeagha

Comedian Chukwuebuka Emmanuel, popularly known as Brain Jotter, has paid tribute to legendary highlife musician Mike Ejeagha, whose 1983 track ‘Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche’ recently resurfaced as a viral sensation across social media.

Ejeagha, widely celebrated for his proverbs-laced storytelling style, died on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Brain Jotter shared a video of the late artist with the caption:

“39 years ago, he made magic. 39 years later, we danced to it again. Now, he rests, but his melody lives forever. Rest in peace, legend.”

Before Ejeagha’s passing, the comedian had visited the musician at his Enugu home in July 2024, following the viral success of his skit featuring Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche.

The skit breathed new life into the decades-old track, captivating millions of viewers and introducing Ejeagha’s work to a new generation.

The encounter moved the veteran musician to tears as he witnessed his legacy being revived.

“Thank you for bringing back my father’s legacy,” Ejeagha’s son said during the visit.

“In over 30 years, this is the most attention his music has received.”

Brain Jotter and his team also presented a ₦2 million donation to the family as a token of appreciation and support.

Tributes poured in nationwide following the news of Ejeagha’s death. President Bola Tinubu led national mourning.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Ejeagha as “one of Nigeria’s greatest folklorists, songwriters, and musicians in the Igbo language.”

“Mike Ejeagha used his music and distinctive storytelling style to preserve and project Igbo culture and customs, inspiring generations.”

“May the spirit and values of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music continue to remind us that music has the power to revive, heal, and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation,” Tinubu said.

He also applauded Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for recognising the legend during his lifetime by renaming a key road in Abakpa Nike as Chief Mike Ejeagha Road.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also paid tribute, stating:

“It is heartwarming to note that thanks to Brain Jotter, highlife maestro Mike Ejeagha had his ‘Gwo gwo gwo ngwo’ encore dance before the curtain was drawn. Rest in music, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.”

Labour Party’s Peter Obi called Ejeagha “a cultural custodian”, adding:

“His transition marks the end of an era, but not the end of his voice — his songs will continue to echo through generations as testaments to wisdom, culture, and truth. His lyrics, rich with proverbs and folk wisdom, were moral compasses for both young and old.”

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah echoed the sentiment, describing the icon as “a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State.”

“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill,” Mbah said, promising further steps to immortalise Ejeagha’s contributions.

Originally released in 1983 as part of the Akuko Na Egwu Vol. 1 album, Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche tells the folktale of a cunning tortoise who tricks an elephant to win a princess’s hand in marriage.

In Brain Jotter’s skit, a comedic reenactment of the elephant chasing the tortoise, set to the iconic “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” chorus, sparked a viral dance challenge.

The challenge quickly dominated TikTok and Instagram, racking up more than 28 million views in just a week.

In the trend, two dancers perform a quirky leg shuffle before one bolts and the other gives chase — a nod to the song’s storytelling roots.

The dance captivated people from all walks of life, including celebrities, schoolchildren, clergy, and even the Super Falcons.

It eventually reached international audiences, with dancers around the world joining in.

Born in the early 1930s in Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Ejeagha was more than a musician, he was a moral teacher, historian, and cultural archivist.

His acoustic guitar-driven music carried deep messages about life, integrity, and wisdom, and he remained a household name in Igbo highlife for decades.

Mike Ejeagha may have taken his final bow, but as Brain Jotter wrote:
“His melody lives forever.”

South-East Traders In Ogun Shut Shops To Protest Killing Of Igbo Woman By Tax Collectors

Traders from the South-East region operating in Ifo, Ogun State, have closed their shops in protest over the killing of an Igbo woman, Blessing Eze, who was allegedly stabbed by touts demanding payment of a so-called festival tax.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, June 6, 2025, during Eid Mubarak celebrations, has triggered outrage and calls for justice.

According to eyewitness accounts, touts reportedly demanded ₦1500 from each trader as a levy for the festival.

Eze, who was said to be financially constrained at the time, allegedly refused to pay and was fatally stabbed during a confrontation.

Chiamaka Eze, a fellow trader, shared details of the incident in a phone interview with SaharaReporters on Saturday:

“The incident happened on Friday being yesterday when some touts began taxing traders over the Eid Mubarak festival of Muslim faithfuls that took place yesterday. Each trader was asked to pay ₦1500.”

She further explained how events escalated when they got to Blessing Eze’s stall:

“On getting to late Mrs Eze, she told them she didn’t have the money as at the time they came, and pleaded that they should come back.”

“As touts that they are, they started destroying her goods, during which she dragged one of them and asked him to arrange her goods properly and come back.”

“She said she would pay but she didn’t have the money as of that time because she had not sold anything. That’s how one of them stabbed her on the chest which later led to her death.”

Simon Uchenna, a member of the Igbo Market Union, condemned the killing and described a history of intimidation:

“We are mourning the loss of one of our own, and we demand justice. Before this woman’s death, we had been experiencing assault and intimidation from those group of touts.”

He said the union had declared a four-day mourning period, during which Igbo traders will not open their shops.

“We implore the Ogun State Government to intervene and make sure the perpetrators are brought to book,” he added.

The protests are not only in reaction to Eze’s murder but also to years of unchecked harassment by street tax collectors. One market member recalled another violent incident from the previous year involving the son of the Baba Loja (market head), Waheed:

“Despite reporting the incident to the police, he was advised to drop the case due to the suspect’s alleged connections.”

“Nigeria will always be what it is, where killers will tell you to your face that they will kill you and nothing will happen,” the trader lamented.

Other traders echoed the same concerns, calling for protection and regulation.
“Festival money shouldn’t be by force, it should have been something of free will,” said Okoye Chizoba.

“True to their words, they will kill you and nothing will happen. Human lives mean nothing to everyone, even those (government) whose duty is to protect you from killers.”

The closure of businesses has led to significant disruption in Ifo’s markets, as both traders and customers react with shock and grief.

The market union has vowed not to resume business activities until those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

“May her soul rest in peace,” the traders said in a solemn tribute to Blessing Eze.

ADC Ramps Up Grassroots Mobilisation In Enugu, Pushes Ideology Of Welfare, Good Governance

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is intensifying its grassroots mobilisation efforts and working to expand its ideology focused on improving the welfare of Nigerians.

Speaking at the Convergence of Coalition Partners Meeting held on Saturday in Enugu, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralph Nwosu, represented by the National Vice Chairman (South-East), Mr. Godsent Chilos, emphasised the party’s commitment to strengthening alliances under the theme “Strengthening Alliance for A Better Nigeria.”

According to Nwosu, the ADC is focused on rebuilding Nigeria through sound governance and aims to lift millions out of poverty and economic despair caused by the current administration at various levels.

“ADC is working to take over realms of power at both federal and state levels, and we are ready to move Nigerians from lack and hardship as no one currently in the country is happy with the negative socioeconomic development in Nigeria,” he said.

Highlighting the widespread insecurity across the nation, Nwosu stated:

“The insecurity throughout the country is unprecedented and alarming; and doesn’t spare anyone, even the rural farmer in his or her village is not safe to peacefully go to the farm any longer.”

He decried the worsening poverty and hardship facing citizens, blaming poor leadership.

“The socioeconomic indicators are very negative and plunging millions of Nigerians into abject and generational poverty, making the nation the poverty capital of the world,” he noted.

To address this, Nwosu announced a new grassroots campaign.

“We are launching ‘Operation Power Must Change Hands’ at the grassroots to mobilise Nigerians to see the need to change the negative narrative and liberate our people and nation from misrule.”

He further stressed the ADC’s determination to reform the nation’s political and economic landscape:
“We will leave no stone unturned in our resolve to turn the socioeconomic and political tide and ensure it better lives of Nigerians.”

Also speaking at the event, diplomat and policy expert Dr. Chukwuma Okenwa urged opposition parties to take up their constitutional role of holding the ruling parties accountable.

“Opposition parties in the country should brace up to play their role of checkmating what the ruling parties are doing in the best interest of Nigerians.”

“You must speak out and make your voices and perspectives clear in issues that affect Nigerians,” he advised.

Dr. Okenwa also pointed to internal flaws in party structures:
“Political parties must strengthen their internal democracy mechanisms. Lack of internal democracy is responsible for crisis in most major political parties in the country and it has eroded the trust Nigerians have in these parties.”

On her part, Mrs. Sylvia Abanah, State Coordinator of the Nigeria League of Women Voters, stressed the importance of women’s involvement in political strategy and candidacy.

“The ADC stands a better chance of winning elections especially at the state, council area, and ward levels when women are made candidates and galvanized to see reasons to vote for their fellow women,” she said.

Delivering the welcome address, Enugu State Chairman of ADC, Comrade Stella Chukwuma, said that what Nigerians seek is simple: good governance.

“Only good governance can bring the needed development and benefits of democracy to Nigerians,” she stated.

She added that the ADC has the necessary coalition strength and grassroots support to bring about that change:

“In 2027, we must vote with one voice to change the tide and enthrone good governance in order to tackle the hardship in the land and liberate our people. ADC has come to offer the platform for socioeconomic and political emancipation.”

Highlighting the party’s action plan, Chukwuma said:
“We have arranged for unprecedented door-to-door grassroots political consciousness and mobilisation as well as ensure we give our people hope of a new Nigeria and better life for them all.”

She further stated that the ADC is open to strategic partnerships:
“The party is open for genuine progressive partnerships with non-governmental organisations and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) to see how best to mobilise Nigerians for genuine change through their votes.”

The event saw the participation of ADC coalition partners, along with over 200 ward, council, and state executive members from Enugu State.

Police Deny Summoning Enugu Council Chairman Over Vigilante Group Formation, Labels Report Fake, Misleading

Enugu Police Commissioner, Giwa

The Enugu State Police Command has strongly denied reports suggesting it summoned the Chairman of Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area over the formation of a vigilante group aimed at combating herdsmen violence in the region.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, and made available to DAILY GAZETTE, the police described the reports as “misleading” and “a calculated attempt to distract from an active investigation” into the gruesome killing of eight individuals in the Opanda community.

According to the statement, on March 15, 2025, the Command received a report concerning the disappearance of eight male Muslim worshippers in Opanda, a community in Uzo-Uwani LGA.

A subsequent search led to the discovery of five bodies on March 16, all bearing gunshot wounds and machete cuts.

The burnt remains of the remaining three victims were recovered later, alongside seven expended cartridges.

A key witness, a surviving child, claimed the attackers were members of a Neighbourhood Watch Group and identified one of the suspects who fled on a motorcycle.

Security operatives later intercepted the motorcycle, but the rider managed to escape.

Shortly after, the local government chairman reportedly contacted the operatives, requesting the release of the seized motorcycle.

Due to this alleged involvement, the Chairman was invited to provide a statement and assist with the production of the suspect in question.

The Command clarified that the invitation had no connection to the establishment or operation of the Neighbourhood Watch, a government-recognized security initiative in the state.

“The reports are not only misleading but appear designed to derail the course of justice,” SP Ndukwe stated, adding that the investigation focuses strictly on criminal accountability, not the legality of the vigilante group.

Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, also addressed the controversy, warning individuals spreading false information to desist from further dissemination of misleading narratives.

The investigation will be conducted with fairness, transparency, and a strong commitment to justice, without bias to tribe, ethnicity, or religion,” CP Giwa affirmed.

He further reiterated the Command’s dedication to law enforcement across the state, vowing to pursue all criminal cases without fear or favour.

The Police Command called on members of the public to disregard misinformation and allow law enforcement to carry out its duties professionally and without interference.

Join Ongoing Coalition Or Risk Losing 2027 Reelection – Abia ADC Tells Otti

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abia State has called on Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party to join an emerging coalition of opposition parties or risk being voted out in the 2027 general elections.

At a high-level political gathering held in Umuahia over the weekend, tagged the ADC Convergence of Coalition Partners and themed “Strengthening Alliances for a Better Nigeria”, the ADC’s Abia State Chairman, Mr. Don Norman Obinna, made this declaration. He served as the event’s Chief Convener.

According to Obinna, “The ADC is adopted as a coalition party to right the wrongs orchestrated by the APC. The unemployment rate is alarming, the naira is in free fall, and the civil servants’ minimum wage is a national disgrace.”

He added that the coalition’s mission is to “bring succour to the people, chase hunger out of Nigeria, and restore the country to a trajectory of prosperity.”

Obinna revealed that the ADC had been adopted as the official political platform for the growing coalition of parties, a move expected to be formalized following consultations in Abuja.

He confirmed that key opposition leaders, such as Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi, participated in the coalition-building efforts.

“If Governor Otti refuses the call to join the coalition, it would democratically remove him in the 2027 elections,” Obinna warned.

Notable attendees at the Umuahia event included Senator Austin Akobundu (PDP, Abia Central) who served as the Chairman, Professors Uzoma Emmanuel and Max Nduaguibe, and Chief Chinkwe Udensi, who were among the guest speakers.

The gathering attracted influential politicians, civil society actors, youths, and reform-driven thinkers, all unified by a vision of a better Nigeria through political alliance.

Emphasizing the ideological foundation of the movement, Obinna declared: “I am therefore inviting Governor Alex Otti and others who have good intentions and are aspiring for elective positions to join the coalition or miss out in 2027.”

He insisted that the coalition aims not just for political realignment but to correct what he described as “years of governance failure, economic mismanagement, and citizen disenfranchisement at both state and federal levels.”

During a lecture titled “Leadership Imperatives for a Successful Coalition and Merger Outcome,” Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, Executive Director of the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), outlined key leadership principles necessary for coalition success.

These include shared ideology, integrity, equity, internal democracy, youth and women inclusion, collective messaging, conflict resolution, and a long-term national vision.

Warning against superficial unity, Nwafor said, “If merging or coaligning is only to defeat the APC, the coalition is already weak.”

“So let us not merge with noise just to wrestle power, but coalign and merge for nation-building, restoration of hope, and a new belief system, which is the kind of coalition Nigeria needs.”

In another address, Professor Uzoma Emmanuel Afamefuna stressed the significance of inclusive governance and civic engagement in shaping a prosperous Nigeria.

“Nigeria has the resources, but its problem has always been leadership,” he noted.

He praised the ADC’s coalition effort and expressed confidence that with coordinated grassroots mobilization, the opposition could present a credible alternative in 2027.

He also advocated for rotational leadership, equitable representation, and issue-driven campaigns, warning the South East against electoral compromise.

“Do not sell your votes for rice, wrappers, or fake promises,” he urged, emphasizing that “only through citizen-led accountability can Nigeria chart a new course.”

Meanwhile, Blessed Amalambu, a former ADC House of Assembly candidate in Abia State, offered a word of caution.

He warned against the imposition of candidates and infiltration by corrupt figures.

He advised the coalition to “critically screen aspirants before presenting them to the electorate to vote for.”
