Man Jumps Into Well, Dies After Taking ‘Colorado’

A 43-year-old man identified as Kazeem, from the Edun area of Ilorin, Kwara State, tragically lost his life last Friday after allegedly consuming a hard drug known as “Colo” (Colorado) and jumping into a well.

Sources revealed that the incident occurred shortly after Kazeem returned home from the Eid prayers in the morning.

Under the influence of the substance, he reportedly jumped into a domestic well located at Alapo Compound, Edun, Ilorin.

Men of the Kwara State Fire Service were swiftly dispatched to the scene following a distress call.

The spokesman of the service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday.

“The distress call was received by our control room at about 10:29 a.m., reporting that a man had fallen into a well,” Adekunle said.

“Our firefighters were immediately mobilized and successfully recovered the lifeless body of the victim from the well.”

He added that the deceased, identified as Kazeem, had allegedly taken a hard substance known as “Colo” shortly before the incident occurred.

The recovered body was handed over to Inspector Babatunde Amos of the ‘C’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Ilorin, while the Ministry awaits formal identification and claim of the body by the victim’s family.

Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, used the occasion to warn members of the public against drug abuse, stressing that substance misuse often leads to preventable and tragic outcomes.

At least 13 Palestinians were killed on Saturday in separate Israeli attacks on Gaza, according to the enclave’s civil defence agency, as violence continues to escalate amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.

Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza’s civil defence, said six people were fatally shot around 7:00 am local time (0400 GMT) near the Al-Alam roundabout in southern Gaza’s Rafah region. The area has become a daily gathering point for thousands of residents seeking humanitarian aid from a nearby distribution centre.

The aid centre, located approximately one kilometre from Al-Alam, is run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which began operations in late May following Israel’s partial lifting of a two-month blockade on the territory.

Eyewitness Samir Abu Hadid, who was at the scene, recounted the moment violence broke out. “As soon as some people tried to advance towards the aid centre, the Israeli occupation forces opened fire from armoured vehicles stationed near the centre, firing into the air and then at civilians,” he told AFP.

When contacted, the Israeli military said it was investigating the incident, which is one of several fatal shootings reported near the Al-Alam aid point in recent weeks.

In a separate strike in northern Gaza earlier the same day, seven more people were reportedly killed when an Israeli airstrike hit a residential building near the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City.

Israel’s military has also stated it is reviewing that incident.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has voiced concern over the mounting humanitarian toll, warning that Gaza’s entire population—over two million people—is at risk of starvation. The UN has opted not to partner with the GHF, citing concerns about maintaining neutrality in the conflict.

Enugu Governor Vows To Immortalise Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has paid tribute to the late highlife icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, following the announcement of his passing on Friday.

The governor, expressing grief, described the legendary musician as a national treasure and pledged that the state would take concrete steps to honour his legacy.

In a heartfelt post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, Governor Mbah reflected on Ejeagha’s immense contributions to Nigerian culture, particularly through his transformation of traditional Igbo folktales into widely resonant musical compositions.

“Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State,” Mbah wrote.

“He was one of the finest musicians of his generation, with an easygoing personality and a humility that belied his towering celebrity status. His fan-base transcended boundaries, and he was easily one of the most recognisable voices in music.”

The governor continued by highlighting the unique genius of Ejeagha, who he said had the rare ability to preserve culture through accessible and memorable music.

“Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures,” he noted.

Describing the late musician’s death as a monumental loss, Mbah said the void left by Ejeagha would be deeply felt, not just in Enugu State, but throughout the country’s music and cultural landscape.

“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill. But the legacies he has left behind will last a lifetime,” he stated.

On behalf of the state government, the governor extended his sympathies to the Ejeagha family, assuring them that they would not face the grief alone.

“Above all, I pray that his family experiences the comforting grace of God’s love, and the fortitude to bear the loss. Rest in peace, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha.”

Governor Mbah further promised that the Enugu State Government would ensure the iconic musician is “duly immortalised,” although no specific details of how that will be done were immediately provided.

Mike Ejeagha, who carved a niche for himself with his blend of folklore, proverbs, and melody, enjoyed a distinguished career that spanned decades.

His legacy as a custodian of Igbo oral tradition continues to resonate, making him one of the most beloved figures in Nigeria’s cultural history.

Colluding With Bandits Against Troops Ungodly, Citizens Must Show Sacrifice – Azeez

The Amir of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat of Nigeria, Alatoye Azeez, has urged Nigerians to show unwavering support for the armed forces, describing any form of collaboration with insurgents or bandits as both ungodly and a betrayal of national sacrifice.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise programme on Saturday, Azeez condemned what he referred to as the lack of citizen support for Nigerian soldiers, many of whom are laying down their lives in the fight against terrorism and banditry.

We can’t be colluding with bandits, terrorists, turning them against the soldiers. That is so ungodly and that is a lack of sense of sacrifice because as they are sacrificing themselves, we also have to sacrifice ourselves by supporting them fully,” Azeez said.

Reflecting on the ongoing Eid-al-Adha celebrations, the Amir emphasized the importance of true sacrifice, highlighting the example set by military personnel on the frontlines.

He lamented what he saw as a national failure to stand by those making the ultimate sacrifice.

“I can’t see that support for them, and a lot of them, you know, are dying, still, they are still committed. I also have a very strong belief we must provide very strong support to them,” he added.

According to Azeez, the disparity between the sacrifices of the troops and the attitudes of civilians is concerning.

“Unfortunately, the soldiers sacrifice their lives on the war front, but I do not see that level of sacrifice from the nation backing them up. It’s like we are pushing them forward to war fronts.”

“But we are turning back from them and leaving them alone. We must support all the soldiers; we can’t send them to the war front and not give them the right support.”

“And when I say the right support, I don’t mean only ammunition. All citizens of the country must stand by them,” he stressed.

Azeez also advocated for intensified efforts in civic education and national awareness, calling for the government and public institutions to do more in shaping a patriotic and security-conscious citizenry.

“We need to do a lot of the national orientation, and I also agree with Mr. President that we must provide that support,” he said.

His remarks echo sentiments shared by President Bola Tinubu, who, during Eid-al-Adha prayers at Dodan Barracks in Lagos on Friday, called on Nigerians to remember the sacrifices of the nation’s military personnel.

A statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, quoted the president as saying:

“We should remember to pray and give to those who are very vulnerable in the spirit of the season, which is sacrifice. We must unite, remain our brothers’ keeper, and give to our neighbours. We should show love to everyone.”

“We must also pray hard for our troops to keep us safe. They are making sacrifices in the challenges that we face from terrorism and banditry today. We must pray for them specifically, remember their sacrifices, and continue to behave well as citizens.”

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has joined Nigerians in mourning the legendary highlife musician, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95. I

n his condolence message, Atiku described the late artist as more than just a musician, referring to him as a “storyteller, a teacher, and a guardian of Igbo oral tradition.”

Ejeagha died around 8 p.m. on Friday evening at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after battling a prolonged illness. H

His eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the sad news to reporters on Saturday.

Taking to his official social media accounts, Atiku expressed his admiration and respect for the cultural icon.

He wrote, “Gentleman Mike Ejeagha was more than a musician; he was a storyteller, a teacher, and a guardian of Igbo oral tradition. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Ejeagha, widely known for his composed personality and rich lyrical heritage, earned the nickname “Gentleman” for his soft-spoken nature and graceful delivery in music.

His influence spanned decades, with many of his songs becoming cultural anthems in Igbo-speaking regions and across Nigeria.

The highlife veteran recently returned to the spotlight after a heartfelt and widely shared visit from comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter, who brought attention to the musician’s legacy and living conditions.

Reflecting on that moment, Atiku wrote, “It is heartwarming to note that thanks to Brain Jotter, highlife maestro Mike Ejeagha had his ‘Gwo gwo gwo ngwo’ encore dance before the curtain was drawn,” referencing the artist’s iconic vocal style and the emotional impact of the visit, which reignited nationwide appreciation for his work.

Ejeagha was renowned for blending folklore, proverbs, and moral lessons into his music, creating songs that were as educational as they were entertaining.

His career spanned over sixty years, during which he built an enduring catalog marked by philosophical depth and traditional instrumentation.

Afenifere Faction Urges Tinubu’s Impeachment Over Coastal Highway Contract

A faction within the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has demanded that the National Assembly initiate impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, citing alleged conflict of interest surrounding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

The group’s leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, voiced strong criticism during an interview with DAILY GAZETTE on Saturday expressing disapproval over Tinubu’s public remarks in which he referred to Gilbert Chagoury—the head of Hitech Construction, the firm executing the project—as his “partner.”

During the commissioning of Phase 1, Section 1 of the 30-kilometre highway last Saturday, Tinubu had praised the contractor, stating, “To the contractors and my partner in daring, it was tough for us… We came together to tame the Atlantic.”

He described the project as a “symbol of courage and commitment.”

Hitech Construction, a subsidiary of the Chagoury Group, is also the developer behind Eko Atlantic City—an upscale real estate venture established on reclaimed land from the Atlantic Ocean.

Reacting to the president’s comments, Oba Olaitan alleged a clear breach of ethical standards.

“All President Tinubu is doing is building a road to his own Atlantic City. He openly said the contractor is his partner. That means he awarded a federal contract to himself,” he stated.

He continued, “That road was not advertised for public bidding. It is a national shame. If we had a truly independent and vibrant National Assembly, they would have begun impeachment proceedings immediately.”

Oba Olaitan further questioned the partial nature of the road’s launch, suggesting that the limited segment might be the only portion completed, primarily because it serves the interests of a private development.

“Why commission just four per cent of the road? That road leads straight to their private development. If that part is done, they may abandon the rest. This is a clear conflict of interest,” he maintained.

Calling for decisive action, the Afenifere factional head declared, “The National Assembly must prove that it is not complicit. If they are truly independent, they must act now. We cannot condone this. This is not how to run a democracy.”

“The president has admitted to a breach of public trust.”

He added, “I am calling on the National Assembly to start the impeachment process now if they are a truly independent and vibrant national assembly and if they are not equally complicit. We can’t condone such a thing.”

In response, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress dismissed the calls as baseless and politically motivated.

Spokesperson Seye Oladejo described the allegations as a serious misinterpretation of the President’s remarks.

“I will just regard that as a joke taken too far. Maybe they need to consult their dictionary to understand what ‘partner’ means.”

“Did he say business partner? He didn’t say they have any relationship or any incorporated firm where they both have shares. He called them ‘partners in daring’; people who believed in his vision and joined in pursuing it,” Oladejo explained.

He further asserted that the contract was lawfully awarded, saying, “Relevant authorities handled the contract process. If there’s any issue, it should be addressed through the appropriate channels, not through calls for impeachment.”

From Allies To Adversaries: Musk-Trump Fallout Shakes Tech, Politics

(FILES) (FILES) (COMBO) This combination of pictures created on August 12, 2024 shows, L-R, Tesla CEO Elon Musk speaking at the 27th annual Milken Institute Global Conference at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on May 6, 2024 and former US President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump standing onstage during the last day of the 2024 Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 18, 2024. US President Donald Trump said in remarks airing on February 9, 2025, that Musk, who is presiding over a purge of US government jobs, will help find "hundreds of billions of dollars of fraud" in federal agencies. Speaking in a Fox News interview set to air before the Super Bowl football championship, Trump said the American people "want me to find" waste and that Musk, the world's richest man and the leader of the president's cost-cutting efforts, has been "a great help" in rooting out unnecessary spending. What began as a high-profile alliance between tech billionaire Elon Musk and former U.S President Donald Trump has now devolved into a public feud, casting a shadow over Musk’s companies and raising questions about the future of his influence in Washington.

Tesla, the crown jewel of Musk’s empire, has been under pressure as Musk’s political entanglements intensify.

The electric vehicle maker’s stock has dropped over 20% since the start of the year, with investor concerns mounting over Musk’s polarizing image.

That concern reached a tipping point this past Thursday when the spat between Musk and Trump escalated publicly.

Tesla’s market value plunged by more than $150 billion in a single day, and Musk saw his personal fortune shrink by $34 billion.

The rift has put a major dent in what was supposed to be a mutually beneficial relationship.

While Trump’s administration had planned to eliminate EV tax credits, Musk hoped the White House would support his long-term ambition: to deploy fully autonomous vehicles across the country.

That plan is now at risk. Regulatory agencies have historically slowed the rollout of such technologies over safety concerns. Under Trump, Musk had expected those barriers to ease.

Now, those expectations seem unlikely to materialize.

“Musk needs Trump because of the regulatory environment, and you can’t have Trump go from friend to foe,” noted Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives.

Tesla’s upcoming robotaxi pilot in Austin, Texas, also faces uncertainty, as the administration holds influence over vehicle design standards and production approvals.

Meanwhile, Musk’s shift to far-right politics has alienated a segment of Tesla’s core customer base, environmentally conscious, liberal-leaning buyers.

Some disillusioned customers have even placed bumper stickers on their cars reading, “before Elon went crazy.”

The company’s performance reflects the shift. In April, Tesla’s market share in Europe plunged by 50%, even as EV sales across the continent rose.

A Morgan Stanley survey revealed that 85% of investors now believe Musk’s political involvement is harming the company.

The feud also threatens SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace firm that has become integral to NASA’s operations.

The company holds lucrative contracts with the U.S government—worth tens of billions—and manages key national security responsibilities, such as satellite launches and ferrying astronauts to the International Space Station.

SpaceX’s valuation soared to $350 billion in a recent share sale, up $140 billion from just six months ago. Much of that increase was based on confidence in future government contracts under a friendly Trump administration.

But that confidence was rattled when Trump, amid Thursday’s fallout, threatened to cancel all government deals with Musk’s companies.

In response, Musk briefly announced he would shut down SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, which NASA relies on to transport astronauts—though he later retracted the statement.

Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is his next big frontier—pitted directly against OpenAI, which he co-founded and where his rival Sam Altman now leads.

Altman, meanwhile, has cultivated his own influence in the White House, securing backing for the Stargate Project, a massive AI infrastructure venture expanding to the Middle East.

Although Musk initially dismissed Stargate as “unrealistic,” reports suggest he lobbied behind the scenes to derail it—arguing that Trump would not approve any plan that didn’t include xAI.

Adding fuel to the fire, Musk merged X (formerly Twitter) into xAI earlier this year. Though X has become a favored platform among conservatives, Trump himself rarely uses it, preferring Truth Social, his own social network.

The Musk-Trump split is more than just a clash of egos—it’s a drama with real economic, political, and cultural consequences.

The unraveling of their relationship could reshape Musk’s businesses and diminish his influence in Washington.

And while Musk continues to position himself as a bold visionary, the fallout raises questions about whether political entanglements are undermining the very empire he’s worked to build.

Tottenham Dismiss Ange Postecoglou Despite Europa League Triumph

Just over two weeks after delivering Tottenham Hotspur’s first European trophy in over four decades, Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as manager of the North London club.

The Australian tactician, who guided Spurs to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the Europa League title, saw his time at the helm come to an abrupt end on Friday, marking a dramatic turn after what seemed a high point in his tenure.

Despite the historic achievement, Tottenham’s Premier League campaign ended in disaster, with the club finishing 17th in the table, just one spot above the relegation zone, ahead of only Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton.

Announcing the decision via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, Tottenham said:

“Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.”

Postecoglou, who was appointed two years ago from Celtic, saw his tenure come to a close under the leadership of chairman Daniel Levy, who made the final call after a disappointing domestic run.

The club’s board emphasized that while the Europa League triumph was monumental, long-term stability and domestic performance remained the priority:

“The board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place.”

“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.”

Postecoglou’s dismissal brings an end to an eventful chapter, where European glory was achieved but marred by 22 league defeats in 38 matches, marking Tottenham’s worst top-flight performance since the 1976-77 relegation season

Onitsha Trader Drags NAFDAC To Court, Demands N15m For Alleged Shop Invasion

A female trader at the Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, Sophie Eberechukwu Okoye, has filed a lawsuit against the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and its Director-General at the Federal High Court in Awka.

Okoye, who runs a shop that exclusively sells clothing, watches, and fashion accessories, claims her business was wrongfully targeted during a raid allegedly carried out by a joint task force operating under NAFDAC’s authority.

The legal action, filed as Suit No. FHC/AWK/CS/162/25, followed the lapse of a pre-action notice period served to the agency. Okoye alleges that officials unlawfully broke into her store and confiscated goods worth over N15 million, even though her shop deals in no items related to drugs, food, or chemicals.

Court documents obtained on Friday outline the trader’s key claims. Among the declarations, Okoye stated:

“That the defendants have no power in the administration, management, and control of food and drugs to oppressively, unlawfully and unconstitutionally break into the shop of the plaintiff [and] looted/carted away the plaintiff’s items that are not affiliated whatsoever with drugs, food or chemicals.”

She further contends that:

“The defendant’s unlawful seizure and/or carting away of the plaintiff’s goods as listed with their value and quantity, is not only oppressive, unreasonable, but also unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional.”

The suit demands that the court order NAFDAC to compensate her with N15,746,000, representing the total value of the confiscated items.

Her legal counsel, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, confirmed the filing and described the situation as a gross abuse of power.

“In every just and democratic society, the rule of law is sacrosanct,” he said.

“No agency, regardless of its mandate, has the right to operate beyond the legal boundaries that define its existence.”

Ejiofor condemned what he called a case of institutional overreach, saying the enforcement action at the market demonstrated a “betrayal of fundamental legal principles.”

Referring to public reaction, Ejiofor added:

“The now widely circulated footage of Sophie Okoye, a young trader reduced to tears after her shop was unlawfully broken into and looted, has shocked the conscience of the nation.”

“Her store, which deals exclusively in clothing, watches, and fashion accessories, has no connection whatsoever to the pharmaceutical trade. Nevertheless, it was targeted in a sweeping operation allegedly executed by a joint task force acting under NAFDAC’s authority.”

Calling for accountability, Ejiofor urged both the federal and Anambra State governments to step in:

“We unequivocally support NAFDAC’s statutory mandate to rid markets of counterfeit and substandard drugs, [but] no mission, however noble, can justify the trampling of innocent citizens’ rights or the destruction of lawful businesses.”

He demanded the formation of an independent investigative panel to review the incident, audit the operation, and identify those responsible.

“Justice must be done and must be seen to be done,” Ejiofor declared.

“Justice must never become collateral damage.”

He affirmed that neither he nor his client would retreat until justice is served.
